@Goldfish @Azel, Sallosh is going to need a clock, too.
They kinda need other things more urgently then a clocktower.
Azel, would naming the decimal time units something else be a good idea? Same reason we don't have time zones, limits confusion.
"Strike in two hours."
"Understood sir!"
Later
"I meant decimal hours you idiot!"
If I get enough votes for it to matter, I will come up with something. Worst case, directly ripping of the Chinese system.

[:V] Plan Doing Proper Time - MY SOUL IS A CPU
-[:V] Binary: Divide the day into 65,536 bits, starting at 0000 0000 0000 0000 and ending at 1111 1111 1111 1111
-[:V] Major divisions of time are not needed, though standard groups may be catagorized, the first 4 places being a nibble, 8 being a byte.
-[:V] The time of 0000 0000 0000 0000 is defined as the sun standing in it's zenith above Sorcerers Deep in both countings. Commission a sun dial that will be set in the University Square to measure that exact time.
-[:V] Commission clock-towers for SD, Tyrosh, Lys, Myr, Mantarys and Tolos who all display the time for everyone to see.
-[:V] There will be no time-zones or similar shenanigans, so that nobody has to do any conversion for long-distance communications or trade.
-[:V] Fund a group of engineers, mathematicians, and mages to conduct research into lowering the cost of time keeping instruments to make them more affordable, with both magic and mundane solutions being explored.

Just so that you know, you are dividing into 16 bits / 2 bytes. The division names would be neatest at hours for the first half-byte, minutes for the second, seconds for the third and using the name micron for the last one.

I'm not seeing any reason to cause an extra step of detail when our spells all work on minutes/hours. Especially when you'd be redefining what an hour meant vs the D&D hour. Just seems pointless complexity to me.
And why would you redefine anything? A turn is a turn is a turn.

Was trying to find some alternative unit name options that make sense in universe and it's frustrating. The Valyrian word for ''day" is apparently "Tubis" of all things, Latin (which we use as a stand in for Valyrian a lot) obviously wouldn't be much help, and even when I looked up German as a joke I found out you guys use "minute".

Jahr, Monat, Woche, Tag, Stunde, Minute, Sekunde

What about it?

Also, I'm stepping out for a bit. This discussion is honestly draining to me.

I like the idea of our time system, but if like to point out one thing: our current day is divided into 86400 seconds, the imperial day would be divided into 1000000 seconds.

Does this mean that the imperial second is a shorter length of time than the astrological second? Or is the imperium adding about 3.777 hours into the day, making the world adjust to viserys´s schedule, and then saying 'deal with it'?

Edit: Because if Viserys is going to slow the rotation of Planetos to have more hours in the day, that's both hilarity and awesome.

Or that you're both just equally pretentious and not above collusion.

JUST LIKE AMERICANS, REALLY.
Aha! French and Germans shall unite against the common cultural enemy!

Seriously though. Europeans tend to band together to bitcj about the Americans, and then go back to hating each other. From personal experience, this works as far out as Prague and in all countries between France and Ukraine.

Was trying to find a system of names with in universe grounding that didn't sound stupid or have any of the same names as the standard. Was mostly comically pointing out that I couldn't even fufill most of those criteria with a joke option. Looked at french for the same reason .

Yes, the imperial second would be shorter. However, Planetos has no notion of seconds or minutes right now and even hours are, at best, extremely vague, so there is no cultural inertia we would have to fight.

No, just the inertia of reality itself. Like, seriously, long-term spells give us perfect time measurement, defined on the basis of Laws of Reality. Trying to forge our own system when we have that to fall back on as a constant is just...well it's enormously questionable.

All this seems to do is add complexity to something that should be simple.

Edit: we could literally build perfect clocks off the duration of certain spells. Have the hour hand pegged to a 1 hour/level spell at CL1, refreshing the moment it drops. No drift, no complex machinery necessary. Just the laws of reality doing our work for us.

  • [X] Plan Doing Proper Time - Goldfish Version
-[X] Divide the day into 24 hours, each hour into 60 minutes and every minute into 60 seconds.
-[X] The time of 0:00 is defined as the sun standing in it's zenith above Sorcerers Deep.
-[X] Commission clock-towers for SD, Tyrosh, Lys, Myr, Mantarys and Tolos who all display the time for everyone to see.
-[X] There will be no time-zones or similar shenanigans, so that nobody has to do any conversion for long-distance communications or trade.
-[X] A constant effect Prestidigitation-based clock will be be used to create magical timepieces, measuring the passage of time based on the Cantrip's ability to color an object once every six seconds. Each timepiece will cost 200 IM to enchant, with further costs determined by its size and upgrades.
--[X] The magical timepiece will consist of a circular disk of Hardened quartz, upon which numbers and colors will be highlighted using Prestidigitation as follows:
---[X] With the passage of each six second increment, a 1/10th "slice" of the inner half radius of the clock will turn from red to black. Each time this circle darkens fully, one minute will have passed, which automatically causes the circle to turn red once again.
----[X] Minutes will be shown on the middle radius of the timepiece. The passage of each minute, or one darkening of the inner radius, will cause a 1/60th segment of the ring portion of the timepiece to change from black to gold. Each time the minute ring becomes fully gold, one hour will have passed, which automatically causes it to darken once more.
-----[X] The outer ring of the timepiece will consist of 24 segments, each colored red with a white border. The passage of each hour, or one gilding of the middle ring, will cause a segment's border to turn red and its color to turn black, with the exception of a number representing the hour of the day which will remain white. Segments will be numbered 1 thru 24, starting and finishing at the timepiece's apex.
-[X] Additional enchantments can be included to further refine these timepieces:
--[X] For 10 IM, Continual Flame-based back lighting can be added so that the timepiece's face is clearly legible regardless of ambient lighting.
--[X] For 180 IM, a Ghost Sound-based chime, with specific types of chime and desired volume decided upon prior to the enchantment being completed, can be added to signal the passage of specific increments of time, such as one hour, three hours, twelve hours, etc.
-[X] Fund a group of engineers, mathematicians, and craftsmen to produce a mundane clock more cheaply, but with similar function and accuracy, to our magical timepieces.
[X] Plan Doing Proper Time - Compromise
-[X] Divide the day in two ways, one astronomical and one decimal, like Yi-Ti does.
    --[X] Astronomical: 24 hours, 60 minutes, 60 seconds
--[X] Decimal: Divide the day into 10 hours, each hour into 100 minutes and every minute into 100 seconds.
-[X] The time of 0 is defined as the sun standing in it's zenith above Sorcerers Deep in both countings. Commission a sun dial that will be set in the University Square to measure that exact time.
-[X] Commission clock-towers for SD, Tyrosh, Lys, Myr, Mantarys and Tolos who all display the time for everyone to see.
