I was more or less thinking of ransoming them when splitting the loot, yes.
So now, I've modified my plan as to renegotiate the split, so we can safely ramson the slaves.

If they are on a rescue mission, there's no problem and they should be able to tell us once we make clear we are manumitting them.
You did buy slaves to free them on a number of occasions, including a bunch of architects from Tyrosh when SD was first renovated.
