Cheap Steel is hands-down the most important tech to get right now, and EM Theory is vital for metalight and/or electric tech.

We need cheap steel, so badly and this should complete reasonably soon.

Telegraphy is the first time in history we can practically reduce communication times for a continental spanning power to seconds instead of months. Spoilers; we need this so badly. Especially since we desire to build railroads everywhere.

Modern Idealism should finish by itself by next turn.

Paleontology is important as it is will use the vast record stores we have. For Science!

That is part of the reason the Sketch will fall behind.

Part of the reason why the British fall behind in term of industrialization in comparison to the United States and Germany is that they use the colonial markets as captive markets to avoid correcting and dealing with their failure to modernize.

It is perhaps inevitable that the Sketch will fall behind in term of raw production but their factory system do not need to be noncompetitive.
