It's more than a little exorbitant. Those things cost more than a new warship and require three days of Lya crafting time. The same cost could outfit a new adventurer with a PfE Amulet, a Healing Belt, +1 armor, and all the other non-magical equipment, with money to spare.

Color the girl's hair and give her an alias. That should be more than good enough to disguise Ysilla.

One could always ask her family to foot some or all of the bill. We're offering her a literally magical education. Just as a knight requires armour, a wizard requires their tools.

@Goldfish we should mention that she can visit anytime via teleport or the weirwood walking thing so not like distance is much of a barrier which should please family.

Noble families in Westeros are used to great distances separating them. Sons are sent across the continent for fostering and not expected to return for years. Daughters are wed and decades may pass before seeing their parents. If they don't see their daughter for six months or a year, they'll be lucky by the standards of most nobles.

I've already offered an explanation for why I don't want to offer them Teleport visitation. And Weirwood travel is out of the question. First, it's Viserys only, and second, we haven't made any effort to mitigate the mind-affecting effect of using such travel, which could be quite bad according to Bloodraven.

Even the basic 360 IM (270 with EA discount) version would be a huge sum of money to ask for from the Royces. I'm not sure how wealthy they are, but even if they could eat the cost easily it wouldn't look good to make the request. It would not only imply that we couldn't foot the bill, but that we were unwilling to do so. Which we are, or at least I am unwilling.

I don't see the distinction much in "she's not a PC yet, so not worth investing in" and "this is a named canon character who wants to learn magic, of course they're going to be important". But, ah, well. I can't wait to get some more crafters.

I find myself disagreeing. Does a squire expect to receive arming for nothing? Yes, sure, well crafted arms and armour might not be as expensive as a ribbon, but it's the same type of expense. One made to ensure that a child is well prepared for the life ahead of them. I can see that I'm not going to win this argument, but you're looking at this far too bluntly.

A set of plate armor and a good warhorse can come to about the expenses discussed here. Now of course a newly minted squire is unlikely to need either right off the bat, but the expenses certainly would not be inconceivable.

It's a moot point--she won't be going beyond the Keep or Tower unaccompanied and Tyene can disguise her well enough through mundane means. Come to it, if she ever has a need to be seen out in public frequently or abroad with us (long time coming, probably), she can get her Greater Ribbon then, when every party member has probably long since had one already.

Exactly. She's 7 or 8 years old and hasn't even got enough magic at her disposal to make a spark.

She's not going to be wandering about the island without an escort for a long time to come.

I wonder if it's even possible to deep-dive into Waymar's kind of dreams the same way Dany could with her dragondreams.
I'm almost tempted to try and find out.

No reason we can't ask Bloodraven for a bit of help, there. We'd probably get a lot more out of it.

Needless to say I'm also very tempted. First Men runes are so, so close.

Well, Dany could experiment. Seems kinda dangerous though.
I mean Ysilla diving deep enough to make something like Dany's humanity-for-maturity exchange.
Not our somewhat more restrained dreaming.

Quick loudly remark on how peaceful and nonmagical the Vale are, repeatadly while taking the most obnoxious road back to the keep.

Use the inevitable encounter to have Ysilla sleep beneath a weirwood and dream of runemagic.

I don't think it's assholish at all. I believe it's blunt honesty which Yohn should appreciate.
Your blunt honesty has a track record of getting us into trouble.

[X] Plan More Diplomatic
-[X] "Your daughter would be as safe as any could hope to be in Sorcerer's Deep, Lord Royce. What's more, Ysilla would have the opportunity to learn the working of magics that would enable her to defend herself, should the need arise, if she possesses such potential."
-[X] "Would she be safer in the heart of my power rather than yours? I can not honestly say one way or another. While the Deep would be a great chance for her, my enemies are many. However, this would set her on a path where in a few years, she will no longer need protection and in the meantime, she will be under my aegis as if she was my own sister."

Give me one example of that happening?

And your version isn't just "more diplomatic" it also tries to deliberately sway his opinion, whereas mine is not only blunt, but neutral in that regard. I still think Yohn would favor my approach over yours.

[X] Azel

Maybe we can offer to teleport them to SD (after lending them a few ribbons of disguise) so they get to see exactly what their sister/daughter is getting into?

Well why wouldn't we try to entice him... we probably have a reputation for collecting interesting people for the hell of it. Practically every month someone new shows up in our Keep.
