Dwarf assistance changes the context of a failure. They'd probably push towards nothing getting done and people getting grumpy rather than fires because they're meticulous.
So... blowing two Dwarf favour for the negligible benefit of one less Watch budget hit? I don't see the benefits, unless we go all the way for full dwarven gunpowder. Which, we don't know we'll really be able to make. Stick to Nuln.

Or... we might insult Dwarf craftsmanship and caution in our overwork exhaustion, and lose Dwarf rep.

And, now the plan is trying to introduce the God of Thieves as patron of the Watch without any boosts. I'm astonished.

The POINT is to make near-dwarf grade powder for better profit and halving cannon/gun failure risks from better quality powder. Not the money saved. The budget point is because the dwarfs need no payment beyond their favor.

This is bullshit.
You can't lose dwarf rep that easily. The dwarfs accept that part of teaching Umgi is that Umgi tends to make mistakes. As long as its done eventually rather than failed repeatedly its fine.

Boosted, watch captain is already Ranaldite, Blessing applied. Worst case nothing gets done and we try something less risky.

That's a regular failure, I.e. no significantly worse consequences than lost opportunity. What does an Overwork failure or crit failure look like? I don't see why it can't perhaps result in rep loss for an insult or similar incident- overwork makes failures worse. Maybe it's not so bad and we don't lose rep, maybe it costs more currency.

As for Ranald, I see the worst case as were outed as a Randalite, tank morale in the Watch, and at really really worst come under suspicion as a Revolutionary gathering a personal powerbase.

It has to be justifiably fatigue based. Maybe we hired halfling conmen in fake beards?

Or we get so tired from overwork that we blame the Dwarves for the lack of progress (from the failure) and insult them (from the overwork). But this is getting speculative.

My main concern is still the Ranald thing. Risky both short term and long term.

Its indeed risky, but now is concievably the only time we'd have the lack of oversight to try it and not be punished:
-Theres no elector count at present.

-Kasmir is having his own crisis of faith and would not be paying a lot of attention.

-The Watch captain is himself Ranaldite in secret.

-The soldiery had just gone through an experience which is appealing to potential Ranaldites, which means the veterans we're hiring would be receptive. This is because it reinforces the threat of monsters to humanity, the importance of luck and for some of them, the things that lurk in the shadows.

So we're at the lowest possible point of scrutiny, and well, with the blessing the most likely failure conditions are simply Ranald advising us that it's a bad time to try it.

And I do want to try it, because the ability to slap Ranald's Blessing onto the Watch is a rather big deal and the window of opportunity would likely close next turn.

Oh. Well, all of the short term stuff is risky, yep.

But... Randal is also the god of revolutionaries. We'd be giving them ready made cover and a receptive audience for their agenda with actual power. It's a risk to future Stirland governments. We won't be in control for ever.

[X] [Plan] Forming a group
[X] Plan Mistress of Shadows

Approval voting, getting Popcorn god as official patron for the watch is stupid; also don't like double train during time of opportunities.

It's also our best opportunity to train, since the boni to that will decay.

I'd personally even prefer to stay away from the political side completly and just focus on using fresh personal options like training and the Undead book before the odss go down.

Ugh, I dislike either of the leading votes. If you do too, perhaps this will work for you:

[X] Firming up the Foundations
-[X] Special Branch: Pull some financial trickery to get the information network classified as part of the Watch, so that their costs are covered by the Stirlandian treasury.
-[X] Verena is the Goddess of Justice. Enshrine her as the patron goddess of the Stirland Watch.
-[X] Abelhelm left you with a list of notarized names. Pass them on to your Master and let the fireworks fly. (does not take an action)
-[X] Though the Haunted Hills have always technically belonged to the Elector Count, they've suddenly skyrocketed in value. If you could backdate some purchases from the Elector Count, you could make a killing reselling them, and still retain your own slice of prime grazelands.
-[X] Stirland Watch: Work alongside Jack to administer the Watch. Choose another Organizational Action for the Watch.
--[X] Set up saltpeter production facilities and call in favours to bring a dwarvern expert in. (-1 Budget Point, -2 Dwarf Favours)
-[X] Spend time with Anton, possibly talking about how good a candidate he would be - local support, known to external powers, and a few powerful friends supporting him, and so forth.
-[X] Your experience with the so-called Fog of War has given you a lot of ideas for new applications of Ulgu.
-[X] Read the Liber Mortis.
--[X] Ranald's Blessing
OVERWORK:
-[X] Practice, Practice, Practice: Having been thrown into the deep end of imperial politics, it would probably be a good idea to brush up on your skills and internalize the lessons you've learned.

Okay, now is time of no oversight. It's not time for monetary gains: we're reasonably well set as we are, we don't really need money and every enrichment option presented is pretty traceabe in future. It's the campaign Dhar options, take two: only select them if we plan to go rogue.
Let's better make power grabs: establish Ranaldite religion in the watch, so that it'll be harder to wrestle it from under our control. Try to subordinate Gustav. Establish Thieves' guild. Leverage our Dwarf friendship to manipulate Elector's meet.
Regarding the list, let's make our own investigation first. We have no idea what this list means, so we shouldn't just use it without knowing the consequences. Remember our thoughts about the fog of war? It applies here. No need to be impatient.

About special branch option for informators: I dislike it because the new EC can wrestle the watch from our control but will have hard times wrestling our information network.

[x] Plan Training & Power Grab
-[x] Trade Delegation: Convince Wilhelmina to partner your network with the EIC based on the value of market information. Especially likely to work since Wilhelmina will soon be losing her position of power in Stirland's government. (NEW-ish)
-[x] Ranald is the God of Thieves, yes, but he's also the God of protecting the common folk. It's worth a shot, right?
--[x] Ranald's Blessing, if allowed
-[x] It may be a moot point, but you can still send off the entirety of information gathered on undead types in Sylvania to your string-pullers. (does not take an action)
-[x] Buy out half of Markus' shares in the EIC. (does not take an action; increases your debt to Stirland)
-[x] Practice, Practice, Practice: Having been thrown into the deep end of imperial politics, it would probably be a good idea to brush up on your skills and internalize the lessons you've learned
--[x] Diplomacy
-[x] Practice, Practice, Practice: Having been thrown into the deep end of imperial politics, it would probably be a good idea to brush up on your skills and internalize the lessons you've learned
--[x] Martial
-[x] Attend the Elector's Meet yourself, to take any opportunity that arises to manipulate events in your favour.
-[x] Read the Liber Mortis. (NEW)
--[x] Ranald's Blessing, if not used on Watch action
-[x] Thieves Guild: It's currently little more than a church group, albeit of a very unconventional god. If it could be expanded under your aegis, it could be a powerful tool.
-[x] Spend time with Gustav, securing his subordination to you.
--[x] Overwork
-[x] Free Time: Anton

I question the people who wants us to lose political clout by not attending the electors meet and trying to not subordinate the army. Besides I see going to the meet to possibly lengthening the regency to a full if we can convince the members that there an heir of the body of Van Hal and it needs more time for them to be found.

Even if that were necessary, Mathilde shouldn't be the one to do so. Van Hal's designated regent, Anton, should be the one to do so in his stead.

-[X] Though the Haunted Hills have always technically belonged to the Elector Count, they've suddenly skyrocketed in value. If you could backdate some purchases from the Elector Count, you could make a killing reselling them, and still retain your own slice of prime grazelands.

-[X] Attend the Elector's Meet yourself, to take any opportunity that arises to manipulate events in your favour.
-[X] Enchantment: You're naturally talented at enchantment; so far, this just amounts to being able to make your desk meow for about an hour. See if you can improve on that, or at least figure out a way to make that useful.
-[X] Your experience with the so-called Fog of War has given you a lot of ideas for new applications of Ulgu. (NEW)
-[X] Financial Jargon: Everything with the EIC flew right over your head last time. Try again. Succeeding here will mean that you can take a more active hand in the company, adding it to the organizational actions; failing or not attempting means Mathilde will remain a silent partner.
-[X] Free Time: Now well-established in Wurtbad, you can spend some time in your scant off hours getting to know someone better. Pick one character. (does not take an action)
    --[X] Wilhelmina's kids
    [X] Plan: Second Things Second
-[X] Special Branch: Pull some financial trickery to get the information network classified as part of the Watch, so that their costs are covered by the Stirlandian treasury.
-[X] Set up saltpeter production facilities using headhunted experts from Nuln. (-2 Budget Points)
-[X] As above, but insist on being a part of whatever happens.
--[X] Also ask our master if there's any chance he could put his weight behind Anton while we're there. He's a good candidate with love for Stirland.
    --[X] Ranalds Blessing
-[X] Spend time with Anton, possibly talking about how good a candidate he would be - local support, known to external powers, and a few powerful friends supporting him, and so forth.
--[X] Make sure both of your loyalties still ultimately lie with House Van Hal.
-[X] Stirland Watch: Work alongside Jack to administer the Watch. Choose another Organizational Action for the Watch.
--[X] Grungni, the principal Dwarf Ancestor God, actually has some following among the Stirlandian populace - and he is their Lawgiver to boot. Bring in a few priests to make it happen. (-1 Dwarf Favour)

    [X] Plan Military Industrial Tycoon
-[X] Trade Delegation: Convince Wilhelmina to partner your network with the EIC based on the value of market information. Especially likely to work since Wilhelmina will soon be losing her position of power in Stirland's government. (NEW-ish)

To what end are you manipulating the EC meeting?
Leverage our Dwarf friendship to manipulate Elector's meet.
Regarding the list, let's make our own investigation first. We have no idea what this list means, so we shouldn't just use it without knowing the consequences. Remember our thoughts about the fog of war? It applies here. No need to be impatient.

About special branch option for informators: I dislike it because the new EC can wrestle the watch from our control but will have hard times wrestling our information network.
Nah. Easy to take away. They can just pay Julia instead of us, job done. Seriously, we set set up that way. We don't even know who most of the informants are anymore.

At least you're not proposing grand fraud...

Depending on the situation, but mostly to prolong regency period until a new Van Hal shows up and decides to take or lose the job.

It's kind of stupid move to take information network from a spymistress, unlike taking a watch. So they've got to sack us first. Also, Julia is a single person and can be influenced more easily to stay loyal to us personally.

Yeah, fraud options are stupid maybe except for land fraud maybe, and unlike power grabs they are unjustifiable.

I question the people who wants us to lose political clout by not attending the electors meet and trying to not subordinate the army. Besides I see going to the meet to possibly lengthening the regency to a full if we can convince the members that there an heir of the body of Van Hal and it needs more time for them to be found.
That's because the Elector's Meet is not actually open to us. It's a meeting of:
-The Emperor
-The Grand Theogonist
-The Ar-Ulric
-The two Arch Lectors
-Elector Counts
-Regents of Elector Counts
-Someone invited by one of the above.

Notice how wizards do not feature. Especially not Wizards of the mind-altering school of magic.

Notice in particular, how someone with Diplomacy 8, a hatred for three of the participants, and no invitation is probably not going to gain political power by going there.
Let Anton do his guileless, nonthreatening, trustworthy(or at least trusted to be a shitty liar) speech on how he has contacted Abelhelm's heirs. Either he'd go to the Meet with the Will and the Heir, or he'd go to the Meet alone.

As for subordinating the army, as Abelhelm said, we're already the second most powerful individual in the country. Currently single most powerful. I don't think adding the army to Mathilde's burdens is helpful. She's not actually more than an average commander out of a few specific scenarios.

She'd make a great captain probably. But not a general or marshal.
Besides Gustav being an agent for the Emperor's spymaster and subverting him being a Problem.

Boney asked 'cunning succession plans' to be explained alongside the plan.

And... the argument 'Julia is a single person' applies to attempts to suborn her, too. Plus, the info network takes money to run. If the new EC had to keep us in place, but wanted to sideline us, they could take the network away. Armies, and spies, and police, all are ultimately loyal to the one who pays them. And if that's the legitimate government of Stirland, acting generally in the Emoires interests, that's fine! Mathilde the Grey Wizard shouldn't care.

Regents of Elector Counts

Not wrong in general, and dabbling in this sort of politics starts to brush up against other Grey Wizard vows, but we could trivially wrangle an invite out of Anton. However:

Volans, the first Patriarch, and the subsequent Lord Magisters of the Grey Order forbade that the Grey Order should ever sell their skills to aid the various political manoeuvrings of the Elector Counts and other governing bodies. Their goal was to oppose Chaos in all its forms, not to unduly influence the internal political struggles of the Empire.

While we'd not be selling anything at the EC meet, the intent and spirit of this ban is pretty clear. This would be the reason not to go, rather than not being able to score an invitation.

Heck, going by this, even spying on another County is probably a dicey area for Mathilde!
