While carrying chickens about is impractical an agent could reasonably keep a pair of potted plants at their home/workplace/bolt hole, one with an Alarm and one with a Shadowsteed, fur use in emergencies.

I'd vote for the leading plan if we'd finished excavating the Palace already. I don't want a bunch of peasants tramping through the house after we've set up a bunch of delicate, mostly glass, equipment.

This is Sylvania were the dead walk not because they have been risen but because of the dark magic that has seeped in to the land over more then 1,000 years of warpstone showers and the actions of dark magic users. When we find a font of dark magic we should make sure as best we can that it has been destroyed for good so that it does not become something we have to wast time dealing with 4 years from now. The place and the thing we are dealing with here is a good example of a situation when a quality tester double checks the safety systems of a car so everyone knows it is safe to use.

I was thinking maintain a coop of Shadowsteed Chickens in each garrison with enough chickens to reach Wurtbad with an express messenger.
Based on the hour assessment, it'd take an action to get it started, but maintaining it afterwards should probably not cost one unless they actually trigger more than one.

Hmm, based on being unable to distinguish pings that option is probably shelved for now.
 
... What stops somebody from just stealing the chickens? They're basically feathery scrolls at that point, and I can think of a lot of mischief somebody with malicious intent could get up to if they even had only two or three copies of the standard Shadowsteed.

I mean, it'd destroy their body, but they could essentially teleport anywhere in Stirland with one of those, as far as we're concerned.

Then we know where it was stolen from. I mean, keeping a coop in the watchhouse is hardly the easiest place to steal from quietly.
But Shadowsteed isn't THAT much better than having a train of changeable horses. Its just tireless so it can gallop the whole way.

It'd probably be easier to steal a horse at every stop.
Especially when remember, the average person is afraid of magic, and would have strong hesitation to putting some kind of shadow horse beneath their babymaking equipment.

It's a hell of a lot of effort to produce something that has only very minor advantages over the existing relay station system.
 
Until the Empire invents telegrams there's not much we can do to improve internal communication outside of outlandish ideas like befriending the Fey or something.

Like semaphore lines you mean? The Empire would have to maintain countless outposts out in the forests and man them all with trained specialists. They wouldn't mix well with secret messages, and can't double as couriers either. Nah, I don't see it catching on, the benefits aren't enough.
 
What about weaving invisibility into our pigeons and putting a bell on the feeder in the coop? Less likely to lose important messages to hawks, hunters, or people actually LOOKING to intercept them. just a thought.
