I would strongly advocate halberds, since getting enough high-quality steel is a non-issue for us and they are the most versatile option. Furthermore, you can have the third row shoulder their shields and let them hack away at the enemy while the two rows in front of them hold the line.

Looking into it, it looks like D&D drops the ball on how spears actually were used for like...70% of history, as a combo with a shield. The Sergeant still has his polearm, but this is just to provide tactical flexibility, not a shift of their primary fighting style (which is still sword and board heavy infantry).

Suggestions I've seen on forums is making it like a bastard sword, with it as a simple weapon two-handed, and as a martial weapon one handed. @DragonParadox?

They should by default carry a couple of javelins already.

They do. Javelins don't provide bracing or reach.

Yeah, 6000 legion soldiers for 30,000 a month? Sounds insane, even more so for our magical logistics. 2 IM per month and 1 for supply seems more reasonable.

At current rates, factoring in resupply, officer commissions (they get paid somewhat better, I'm sure) and losses, we're looking at probably 10K IM for one legion... per month.

A professional military is expensive. Fortunately, we are going to be raking in... so much gold. So much. Pretty soon.

  • [X] Thank Lord Commander Mormont, see your party settled, leave Ser Richard with Rhaella, invite the LC to the Kings Tower as he likely has many questions, and we then have a lot of business to discuss. Might as well make ourselves comfortable.

Should we ask to speak to the Lord Commander in private? Maybe allow Rhaella to drop her glamour?

We don't want to give more reason to those that fought with the late king to more likely abandoned their cloaks and run south with us.

Castle Black, like Eastwatch, is in truth no castle. Rather it is a scattering of towers, keeps, even a sept, but no Heart Tree. Of all the places for one to be missing... You idly wonder how the Black Brothers would have reacted to you dragging some monster of the north thrashing behind you to remedy that lack.
An opportunity! Should probably mention this to the Night's Watch and see if we can't grow any trees here. It'll get us goodwill, be fairly effective while being good PR for us and the old gods and push back any more unwholesome rumors of sacrifice. (There's a difference between sacrifice to the old gods and demons/devils/unwholesome things. )

Before letting him ask his own questions we should ask him to tell us what news he received from eastwatch, might help us move things along.
Alternatively, we could make our own lista of question for the back and forth:
-if they are facing any immediate concern , like eastwatch was with the bears.
-if they have made any progress towards magical weapons and defenses, we want to know where they are before offering help.
-what kind of foes they have run into.
-trade, as eastwatch showed us the north is not without its traced, we are willing to send aid as is our duty, but no doubt they have the means to trade for their own supplies.
-the giants, what Will It take to get them through? We might want to consult with the starks before agreeing to anything.
-their library, we want to look for any clues into our common enemy. (Also, caution them not mention their name north of the wall)

im sure @Duesal has a much better list.
btw, what are we trading Aemon for? an emmissary to our kingdom to oversee the shipments should be ok, but who will take over his duties?

I think the intention was to stop cavalry attacks without mage support (as we've got a lot more legionnaires than mages).
Then they brace their shields and greet their teeth. A charging knight has, at best, something like +11 attack bonus.

Our legionnaires should have (10+9 armou + 1 DEX + 3 shield + 2 Shield Wall + 2 Phalanx Fighting) 27 AC, with their Sargeants giving them another +3 minimum by interfering with their halberds.

Your average, experienced knight with 16 STR and WF and charging, has a 20% chance or so to hit.

Add in lobbed spears and arrows for the backlines and there you go.

Ah, diplomancing was already in effect. :)

Anyway, here's roughly everything we have to do. My computer's about to die, so whoever makes a plan please make sure you get to all of this stuff.

1. Introduce ourselves as Viserys Targaryen, King in the Stepstones.
2. Let the Night's Watch gawk over the Children of the Forest.
3. Tell the Night's Watch that we're well aware of the rising threats Beyond the Wall and have no intention to leave them without aid. Also confirm any fears that they might have--the Long Night is coming.
4. Dany & any other party members we teleport to the Wall hand out magical healing for free.
5. We brief the Night's Watch on everything we currently know about the Others--that the Wall can hold them back through the might of its magic, that the Others can be slain with dragonglass and dragonsteel.
6. We give the Night's Watch lots of gold.
7. We promise them aid in weapons, armor, supplies, and manpower, and that we will bury them in dragonglass.
8. We speak with Aemon, have our family reunion, copy their library as much as we can.
9. We give them a diluted version of our legendary map--geographically accurate, but without the magical ruins marked or the rewards and enemies therein.
10. We bring up the matter of the giants, the wildlings, and the bear spirit. Bottomline, the giants and wildlings need to be somewhere south of the Wall before the Long Night. We can handle the details on that end.

Ask about what they can tell us of Beyond the Wall. Let's not forget this is the largest organisation of trained scouts we know.

We also should try to get them to accept a new Heart Tree.

That they are lacking one here is really bad for them.

Until you are done with the Lord Commander, though the scenes with Aemon will probably include some of that as she will take the opportunity to ask questions again. I'm spacing them out as she becomes less frantic in just wanting to know everything quickly (regardless of whether or not she understands).

Taking the night off. Do what you want. I'M FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
For now.

  • If the NW takes cuts of ironwood trees we can use those to grow a whole godswood full.
  • Should we preach OG worship now or later when we can insta grow the Heart Tree & Godswood. (I am thinking make it a fruittree forest and have a tier with a Change Temperature / Control Weather / Planar bubble effect.)
  • Perhaps Maelor & whomever is free, together with the wizard NPC can go through the library with Aemon...
