Fey mood time?
FEY MOOD TIME!!!

300K soldiers grand slam into WW of what size? Over the decades or so, they had been sipping on farmland growth juice, but they're also losing their city vigor. Simply put, they cannot levy an army as big as ours even if we're talking about only proportionality.

And even if they can levi it, they can't keep it levied. Those men need to be back before harvest. They don' t have a guild industry and massive sacred forest powered agroculture to power their country while their men march to war.

I wonder, even if they can match us in number, how long can they afford to keep doing that in the face of endless tides of levi.

I am pretty sure they still do, but a lot of their population had been settling the farmlands up north. They must necessarily simplify to account for all the losses in bureaucracy and industry and support from the kingdom.

Actually they can and they do still have those things. Even if it isn't large as ours and has degraded thanks to their actions, Western Wall did start off with the same economic base and infrastructure as us except ours was gutted to the point of near-collapse while they lost the Sacred Warding.

Just like Greenshore, Western Wall is fully capable of pulling off a City Levy and they still use an intact Ymaryn bureaucracy even if they have been making the first steps to feudalism. Do not underestimate Western Wall and what they are capable of. They are a lesser version of us and even then, they have strengths that we lack due to them deciding to take long term costs in exchange for short term gain. After all, we know from WoG that Western Wall has been hulking out on the Ukrainian breadbasket since Turn 1 while we were still struggling to stay alive.

The Mass Levy is a very powerful thing, but our Martial Hero, Dragon General Dafydd thinks they got a chance of taking us on depending on how well or bad things have gone for them up north. We need to be careful to not overhype ourselves.

So, what does this mean for the plan to get a third Banner Company? Is that still going, or will it need to be called off due to needing to sustain the Levy for (probably) longer?

(I went outside and it was a beautiful day and I was filled with energy. I dunno what is up with me. Also, be aware that this choice will set precedents.)

Sounds like you are a normal human to me. I've been noticing the same things - spring days having an especially strong positive impact on my mood this year and regaining the inspiration for my writing.

Even with buy in, the sheer expense of task means that Thunder Plateau gives -2 income

So the only benefit of the Thunder Plateau is avoiding melt-down and gaining a buffer for Txolla?

And wow -2 income is expensive... That really does tempt me to try blaming the Revanchists in the hopes that we can maybe break them and just not bother with the Black Sheep.

Still, I DO think freeing Txolla from the threat of constant invasion is worthwhile. Just.

[X] Blame Western Wall. (Revanchists strengthened. Large prestige and influence loss if casus belli against Western Wall is not pursued.)

Voting for this for four reasons:

1) Overcomplicated schemes are generally more trouble than they are worth,
2) I am pretty sure we will need to fight WW when we fight the Black Sheep anyway - certainly if I were the lord of the WW I'd feel pressed to fight if I saw my revanchist neighbours attack their most powerful target,
3) On a personal level I just like honesty,
4) The Revanchists may be a massive PITA, but they deserve justice.

Do people think we could fight BOTH WW and BS at once? Say, start the war with an invasion of WW, break their mass levy with a city levy, then raise our mass levy and body slam the Black Sheep while we're still mopping up the last resistance by WW feudal lords?

The current plan is to send something like 700k at the Black Sheep and 300k at the Western Wall to hold the line until the 700k finishes.

The worry is Stymyr doesn't let peace happen and we fight a 3 front war.

Western Wall might be capable of pulling off a City Levy at best. A Mass Levy is only possible for us because we retain the highly urbanised Core and completely beyond the capabilities of Western Wall.
As for the plan, it is to strike both the Black Sheep and Western Wall with the Mass Levy with the former getting the lion's share of attention as we want to liberate Thunder Plateau before moving on Western Wall in full. Our regular army and the Banner Companies will either continue fighting against Styrmyr if the peace talks fail or will act as a reserve if the peace talks succeed.

So yeah, we can fight both WW and BS at the same time, but we aren't going to try and win against both at the same time. I mean I won't say no if the opportunity pops up, but we want to just keep WW busy while we take out BS before giving WW our full attention.

It has already been confirmed by the QM that we can't avoid Thunder Plateau being counted by the revanchists as rightful Ymaryn land. The thread made our bed long ago and now we have to deal with it, which means taking Thunder Plateau no matter how impractical or painful it is.
You voted for the tantrum spiral. And one needs only look at history to see that people can have revanchist claims on land they haven't had for thousands of years. Hell, on land they never had but someone else who lived in the same area long ago did.

Slaying Revanchism will not be easy, nor will it be painless.

The income penalty should go away eventually, even if that eventually is after we drive railroads through the whole area.

And in the meantime I bet they BS loyalists will make REALLY powerful light calv banner companies.

We can afford to keep up the Mass Levy for about a decade right now. Getting a third Banner Company in a couple of years would either cut into that time or require us to get more money to pay for them. The bigger concern is the -2 Income we get from Thunder Plateau. That is going to hurt us because it all, but nullifies the Guild Industry. Unless we improve our Income, the money from the Guild Industry will end up being used to keep our income neutral and we will need to find other sources of money to pay for our actions.

Which basically means what we have been doing. We might need to start picking sides diplomatically as we may need to sell bombards to get money even through it will upset certain nations. On the other hand, we should get more Income from Western Wall once we conquer it and establishing trade enclaves with the Hung will give us a boost to income.

Railroads will be centuries away when we barely gotten through a couple of decades. For our purposes, Thunder Plateau will be an unfortunate -2 Income that we just to deal with to avoid a death spiral.

Thunder Plateau horses are some of the best in the world.

Well, there are always loans.

There are, in fact, two megaprojects on the list that will help ameliorate the cost of administering Iran from Georgia.

Wagonways aren't exactly cheap themselves. But honestly, I'm looking forward to the potential of being able to just focus inward and on properly linking up Thunder Plateau for the next couple decades or so if/when we take the BSE and WW.

There's no way it's gonna be that simple or that nothing else is gonna come up over the next few decades, but I can dream, right?

Once the war is over our income should not be a problem even with a - 2. Our investment in guild industry should keep us solvent so long as we don't go absolutely nuts with banner companies.

News from Greenshore!

The Styrmyr performed a massive and well coordinated attack across the border. Dafydd has his hands entirely full dealing with the attacks. A couple even manage to slip through and lay siege to Greenshore. Had your general been less able than Dafydd, you would surely have lost territory this year. As it is, the Styrmyr have been, barely, repulsed.

[-0 Influence thanks to Heroic Martial]

Spreading the Sacred Warding, Hung
Needed: Irrelevant, Authority

Your priests have granted the Warding to two villages over the course of the year, under the eye of the Central Empire's bureaucrats and holy men. The Hung men scoffed, until the starpox came through and left those two villages, and only those two villages, entirely untouched. They have apparently been told to grant the warding to the Haungdi and his family next.

[3/7]

Touch the Cow, Do it Now, Greenshore:
Needed: Irrelevant, Authority

The Sacred Herds are shipped over to Greenshore, and the priests begin administering the Warding. This is greeted with celebrations by those old enough to remember a time when none had to worry about the starpox, and the younger generations are relieved… when they believe their parents and grandparents at least.

[1/3]

Establish Trade Enclaves, Hung:
Needed: 26+. Rolled: Irrelevant, Haungdi Interrupt. Success.

The talk of "all under heaven" and the authority of the Melek deriving from the Haungdi has mysteriously disappeared partway through the year. Negotiations turned to the fundamentals of tariff rates and what goods should be considered contraband.

[4/5]

Against Cholera, Abyss
Needed: 16+. Rolled: 95. Success

The Shitting Sickness hasn't actually reached Abyss yet. Your gift is well received, but little comes of it.

[No effects]

Sell Bombards, Germanum Minors.
Needed: 26+. Rolled: 94. Success

The minor lords of the Rexum Germanum snap up your cannons almost as fast as you can make them.

[+1 Treasury]

Construct Warships, Salt Sea:
Needed: 21+. Rolled: 29. Success.

Construction of new warships begins in the Salt Sea.

[1/2, -1 Treasury]

Investigate Assassination Attempt:
Needed: 11+. Rolled: 7+70=77. Success.

You declare to the Kingdom that the rebels in Western Wall were behind the attack that injured the King and killed the Heir. The populace quivers with rage, and you know you will have to move against the rebels soon if you are to keep the People appeased.

[See Previous Threadmark for details]

Peace Talks, Styrmyr
Needed: 71+ for +1. Rolled: 87+5=92. Success.
Needed: 7+. 1d10 → 4+2+1-1=6. Failure.

The Styrmyr presently believe themselves to be winning the war. And thus they decline to cede Greenshore back to you.

Personal Action: Peace Talks, Styrmyr

Rumor Mill:

Heir Dead: Governor Idari of Hathytta has died. He was severely injured in an explosion set off by rebels from the northernmost province of the Melkut Ymaryn. Despite the care of the finest physicians in the world, he did not survive the year. The Kingdom Mourns.

War in Rexum Gemanum: The seemingly eternal civil war in the Rexum Germanum was on a low simmer the last few years, but has once again erupted into a full boil. This time, previous minor powers are making a very strong showing thanks to weapons provided by the Melkut Ymaryn.

New Major Power in Northern Syffron: Pulska, a kingdom bordering the Rexum Germanum to its east, has won acclaim and recognition this year, and has been acknowledged by all as one of the Powers of the continent.

Famine Waning in Kus: The harvests in Kus are starting to recover this year, and the Augeries of the future are good.

Well, fuck.
A year or two to build up strength after defeating the Styrmyr would be fine, longer than that, probably not.
Though, from this it at least seems that the populace is willing to wait for the Styrmyr to be vanquished before we kick off the Great War.

Well, I suppose this means more customers for Bombards. We could use the cash influx.

Oh yeah, and the heir died. That definitely sucks. Hopefully we can mollify Hathytta since the Western Wall is clearly to blame and we're planning on War with them.

Well, I mean.... does it suck, though? The Governor was picked for entirely political reasons rather than because he was the strongest candidate in terms of personal qualities. Now he's dead, and we get to revote on the Heir while having already reaped the political awards for appointing the old one.

I wouldn't go so far as to thank Western Wall, but the situation isn't without upsides.

Kinda, depends on how much they expect to have the heir be the heir of the guy who died. We may essentially be stuck in the same position as before, but with a younger heir to the throne.

And that has upsides and downsides.

A young king can work hard.

Good thing our system of monarchy replaces kings and heirs easily without succession wars.

Well, this wasn't a surprise. I am glad Dafydd held on and I really hope this was an unsustainable push by Styrmyr.

But my gut keeps saying we face a real chance of being in a serious 3-way war when we have to take on the Black Sheep...
