Ymaryn Sign Language(YSL) - A natural language that is communicated through visual-hand moduality rather than through the spoken words. Where as Ymaryn uses the spoken words, the Ymaryn Sign Language uses combination of hand movement, facial expression, and body language.
Temples traditonally serve as asylum and hospice, as well as assistive living facilities for people with disabilities. In particular, the Scared Forest temple was home to an usually large concentration of people with hearing disabilities, which creates the perfect environment for the creation of a sign language. Prior to that, there were no known sign language, although there are mentions of individuals who uses sign to speak.
The language's only prior influence were the various home signs that deaf individuals were using to communicate with their families before coming to the temple. Over time, interactions had lead to new signs and the nucleation of a new language. The priesthood, rather than attempting to stamp it out, 'realized' that the community of deaf people have a gift. The priests documented and encouraged the evolution of the language. It also generated a distinct cultural identity within the Ymaryn empire that is simply referred to as the Deaf. They eventually formed their own enclaves within the cities of the Core and even farming communities.
After the Collapse, Deaf priests who would normally stayed at the Sacred Forest were sent out to Memory of Spirit and Txolla and beyond to assist with the reconstruction, eventually spreading the language across the Ymaryn Empire, creating regional dialects and new languages, as well system of writings.
It must be noted that there were several myth about the language. Contrary to popular belief, it is not the Deaf's version of the Ymaryn language, nor YSL is a universal language. Some may believed that YSL is not even a real language.
Because of the legacy of the collapse, in some parts of the empire, there are sometime more hearing speakers of the language than there are Deaf.
