@Boney Thank you very much for the wonderful update. It was not what I expected but far greater than I could have dreamed. Absolutely wonderful to get a peek into Eike's perspective. I really like the contrast between Mathilde's perspective and Eike's, in that I note that the syntax and tone of the perspectives seems to differ. It's still early on, but Eike's PoV strikes me as familiar to Mathilde's early PoV, with a somewhat clinical and yet also oddly flowery description like she reads a lot of novels and describes things in a stylistically similar way. She hits a lot of the same notes as Mathilde with her endless curiousity and love of learning, but she still feels different.

Most importantly, however, is that she seems to be benfitting quite a bit already. Her comments on Mathilde's diplomacy style made me chuckle, but she's not wrong. Mathilde has no hope of outmaneuvering Elves with her silver tongue, but she can certainly bludgeon them with ultimatums that threaten the status quo until one of them folds and turns on the other. Regardless of species or society, self-interest is a powerful motivator.

Recall that the Tar-Eltharin that Eike knows is more 'Teclis-Eltharin', or perhaps 'Grey-Eltharin':

So Eike might end up with a really weird accent.
Imagine the elfs reaction when they go to a new lecture on insights into Waagh magic and its being given by a human with the most incomprehensible hick accent.
Like attending a NASA conference and finding the keynote speaker is some hill billy who turned his pickup into a reusable rocket.

This Eike interlude was quite a welcome surprise.

I would like it to see it return (and to see it with other characters too, Max or Johann would likely be hilarious) but it is probably best to not overindulge in it, but to ocasssionaly throw it in to spice things up.

A foreign accent would probably be more appropriate.
Don't think hillbillies, think someone from India or Pakistan.
Or at most a French Canadian talking to actual French.

I was trying to think of what it would sound like if the accent of the sailing population of an island empire was isolated for a few centuries and realized that it's literally just Australian.

That's easy - take Eike along with us when we go poke the Iron Orcs.
(don't actually take Eike along when we go poke the Chaos orcs, please)
I was more thinking taking her to hunt down one of the small parties on the Silver Road.
The parties there are small, because the dwarfs are hunting them down before they mob up with the Eyes of Grimnir.
We could just go and offer our services for a few days to get the little apprentice blooded.

regardless, she has far to much respect and awe for Mathy.

we must fix that

Stealth tag? Or maybe Punny code breaking…
She considers Mathilde to be relatively blunt and rather fond of her own voice, but still very competent and capable of some truly great achievements. This feels like the correct amount of respect and awe, imo.

Also I feel like her grandmother's stories about Mathilde's youth will do a good job of stopping Eike from taking Mathilde too seriously.

As I mentioned before, the one way I really want to ensure Eike is Just Like Mathilde is in the "willingness and ability to understand other cultures, especially those of our nonhuman neighbors and allies," and so it's gotta be:

[X] Culture

(Will try to update the history of the Waystone Project post later today while I'm on a plane.)

"theah ahah as many ways ta categawrise magic as theah ahah beings wo wield it, but one of the bloody most common 'n fundamental is distinguishin' those that wield the bloody magic of the bloody aethyr, 'n those that wield the bloody powah of their god. I av come ta realise that this is the bloody biggest bahrriah in the bloody way of understandin' 'n counterin' the bloody magics of the bloody greenskins.

"the definition of a greenskin shaman is not a greenskin fahkin' capable of castin' magic, nawr one fahkin' capable of directly channelin' the bloody powah of the bloody greenskin gods. They stawah 'n direct the bloody energies of the bloody waaagh, tappin' into the bloody energy field that bridges the bloody greenskins 'n their gods, but is not entirely of eithah. It possesses some qualities of the bloody arcane, some of the bloody divine, 'n some unique ta it, so any approach that treats it usin' preconceptions developed from dealin' with othah magics is doomed ta failah. So ta understand greenskin magic, ya must first understand the bloody waaagh. Fawr those of ya keepin' notes - three as, no exclamation mahrk.

"to students of histawry, waaagh might seem a rough equivalent ta a 'awrde awr a beastherd, such as waaagh urgluk, waaagh grimfang, waaagh gawrbad, awr waaagh grom. This comes from usin' greenskin terminology without understandin' it awr them. Waaagh is the bloody energy that develops from greenskins engaged in awr anticipatin' bloodshed, 'n wen a rulah ahrises among them of bonza mahrtial prowess 'n tactical acumen - wat they call brutalichoo 'n cunnin' - it fills all their followers with that anticipation, 'n the bloody energies this produces fills those greenskins with confidence 'n bloodlust as well as attractin' mawah greenskins ta the bloody bannah 'n drawin' the bloody attention of their gods. This results in a self perpetuatin' cycle of growth 'n conquest centred on the bloody leadah that begun it. That is the bloody waaagh.

"by itself, the bloody waaagh 'n its energies ahah lahrgely only fahkin' psychological in effect. In the bloody 'ands of a shaman, eithah a goblin channellin' the bloody cunnin' of the bloody little waaagh awr an orc the bloody brutalichoo of the bloody big waaagh, it becomes somethin' very fahkin' different. Imagine a light ordah choir tens awr hundreds of thousands fahkin' strong ehmplified by a wahr god with no concept of subtlechoo, 'n ya might begin ta understand how this magic operates. At first, this is a terrifyin' thought. Sobah reflection, however, quickly leads one ta suspect that such a system would be hideously vulnerable ta attack from a numbah of fahkin' different vectawrs, 'n that it all turnin' on the bloody axis of a single shaman means that it would not take much destabilization ta brin' the bloody fahkin' entire spellcastin' appahratus crashin' down. These suspicions ahah absolutely cawrrect, 'n once ya understand enough about the bloody waaagh ta know weah ta tahrget, ya won't need ta try ta match yah strength agayynst that of the bloody waaagh. All ya need is a push in just the bloody right place. 'n ovah the bloody course of these lectures, i will give ya that understandin'."
Fahkin' bloody oath mate.
Thanks lingojam. Not sure why it decided it needed the bloody oath but I trust its wisdom.

E: You know it only occurs to me now, that linguistic drift within the language of magic has some potentially interesting implications, can we add that to the massive pile of research projects we'll never get to?

[X] Eike's choice
Eike's choice will teach us more about our apprentice. This early on, this might be the most important thing for us to do - the better we understand Eike, the better we can tailor our lessons to her.

[-] Culture
[-] Language
But if we do want to decide for her, either of these choices could teach Eike a lesson that will be very valuable, and which Mathilde is uniquely qualified to teach her.

I found the difference in narration a bit jarring. It felt weird to read it in the first person, and that extremely formal speech in a child disturbed me a bit.

That said, seeing us from someone who worships us was fun. Mathilde seems so wise and powerful to Eike, I can't wait for us to teach her the art of always looking like everything's going according to plan. She will end up asking herself how much of our attitude is sincere and how much was us faking it, and i can't wait to see her thoughts when realising it.

When I had agreed to join the Grey College, I had thought that the teachings it would offer would give me some form of insight into Mathilde Weber, the woman who appeared in my grandmother's stories

It's already started! My gods, I'm so sorry, Eike, this looks like an acute case of questis protagonistium. I'm afraid it's terminal.

It reads like eike is taking notes for her memoirs

Mathilde, talking to drucchii: Rack off me mate's fuckin forest ya slaver cunts

"Oi, mates! When ya need to cause some fahkin' miscast among dem bloody orks, ya need to..."
"Perhaps Teclis made a grave mistake."

Oh, I so want to see Eike's reaction when Mathilde prepares for her gigaflex. It's probably something like "Exactly the kind of surprise I expected", just more literary.

Also, I noted that Eike has four martial traits, which is more than she has for other things. Some of that may be things like 'Pacifist', but I like the idea of Eike the Bloodthirstiest Little Shallyan.
Inb4 those book omakes are canon and Eike thinks Mathilde writes them herself.
I think Mathilde wrote them herself, and I wrote some of those.

The Grey College has ciphers based on Lingua Praestantia and Eltharin. Methinks it may be time to add another to that list based off of this because this is a bloody cipher already.

Oh, and vote:
[X] Culture
[X] Economy
[X] Language

I like both Culture and Language, plus added in Economy as well. I don't think that comes up in Mathilde's purview very often, so giving Eike a little lesson with it when it comes up with is a good thing, especially if she's going to take charge of the EIC one day.

Eike is so precious !

I normally get bored with "wow the main character sure is great" interludes, but "Eike trying to be grown-up and analytical as she is impressed by our everyday routine" was a great vibe.
