Goodness, how far and deep does the rabbit hole of Xinshen go? This puts a lot of the interaction with the Ge family into question.

Edit: ninja'ed by Gaz confirming my thoughts

Well the Ge were the most powerful family in both our Father and Leng time as prefect so it kind of adds up that they might not of liked being overtaken.

Dong Zhuo is pleased with you.
Dong Zhuo is very pleased with you.
Dong Zhuo Rapport +++++
It's been a while since I've read this quest, so I'm pretty sure I'm missing something here. Does the mighty Dong have some kind of vested interest in this relative backwater, or is he just impressed with what we've accomplished?

He's been keeping tabs on you, and is very impressed by all you've done, and allowed him to justify to himself the interest he's shown. Basically is now thinking of making you something of a protege of sorts, or at least sponsoring your career's rise.

Yeah, I figured the timing was right for that, the rest though is baffling in the degree though of how invested the Ge seem to have been in the ruin of this County.

..

Ah

That's why Dong Zhuo's so happy with us, huh?

Because we objectively proved he was right to stick his neck out for us, which raises his prestige for making the right call in a complicated position?
This seems to be moves to put them as the controllers of the County, most likely they greatly underestimated the threat posed the bandits and not until other counties were getting sacked and destroyed did they realize oops. Basically feudal backstabbing and jockying using the bandits as a tool to remove some rivals while ensaring others and probably hoping the bandits to be enough of a nuisance that they could defeat them to solidify their power as both justification for taking power and prestige of doing what the previous prefects could not. I imagine our anti-bandit campaign upset them a lot because we were gaining the prestige so they tried to coopt us and failed.

For Dong Zhuo that may be part of it with the prestige gain, the other part is that he respects merit which is one of the reasons he is in the camp opposing the Eunuchs and we are proving our merit again and again plus right now he and Ding Yuan are in the same camp so he would view us in the same camp even if not in his sub faction.

We have met him in person, he tried to recruit us and we declined due to an agreement with Ding Yuan (IC) plus we called on him to get rid of Leng Jun (he had him reassigned elsewhere). Jia Xu is also part of Dong Zhuo sub-faction

He likes Liang Shu, and more importantly, we relied on his influence to cover us from the former Prefect's assassination.

What we've revealed proves that he was right to do so and that means he can gain influence from doing so.

Ge Dejun is more likely to do something reckless or foolish to "prove" himself
Ge Clan popularity and influence in Xinshen plummets!
Gentry army morale is shaking
Ge Dejun is enraged, and very likely to do something foolish.
Zhang Xiu's trust in Ge Dejun is shaken
Influence over Xinshen region is near dominant
Ge Dejun's army and even officers and retainers seem likely to turn on him and swear loyalty to you instead, should he suffer defeat or do something they disagree with.
Ge Maiyu finds all her plans she has been working on for the last year crumple away before her eyes. Zhang Xiu cancels plans to marry Ge Maiyu. Bond with Ge Maiyu BROKEN. Ge clan in general is furious, but publicly, there is nothing they can do.
Jia Xu is seriously investigating the Ge clan, and is close to finding incriminating evidence connecting them to Leng Jun's death.
Jia Xu is also close to finding evidence suggesting the Ge clan manipulated Leng Jun into incompetence to begin with, in an attempt to frame him for the county's problems, and thus using the opportunity to gain power and influence themselves.
Jia Xu is close to finding evidence implicating the Ge clan hired Chu Yan to raid Xinshen last year, to try and kill your father.
That was a perfect storm of bad things for the Ge family. Dejun will probably get himself killed in the first fight. I just hope he doesn't get too many of his troops killed so we can scoop them up.

too bad about the fake refugees, I remember some of us being worried about that. I think we need to figure out some way to vet people, and I have no idea how. Just hope the sisters can fix some of the damage before the bandits reach that area

We took actions to investigate our estate and the people there and those rolled poorly fairly consistently to the point of nothing happens. Given what we learned of infiltrators being sent into cities it makes sense the bandits would do the same with our estate.

The question I have is why the pin the blame game was Ge Maiyu's plan - seems counterproductive if she was looking for a marriage with Liang, given the apparent real rapport that was there (unless faked, but it seemed legitimate).

Now, her father, I can definitely see - makes a very convenient excuse to break off said arranged marriage (that he likely expected Liang to accept) to a rising family.

I think rejecting the marriage made them decide that we were not with them so they tried to get rid of us

It was spite, I think at that point it was already leaning against going with her and she knew it.

Timing doesn't work there. The assassination happened before the party, at a time there was every expectation that families would be joined.

...Holy shit this some ASOIAF levels of intrigue here. Can't believe that Ge Maiyu was trying to manipulate us. Well, looks like it is time to purge them all.

To clarify - Liang notified Ge Maiyu of the removal via Dong. Afterwards convinced her to join as retainer.
1

Found out Leng died at meeting with new prefect
2

Found out there was a framejob at party
3

Marriage proposal by Gedad and rejection at party
4

So if the plan was to use this as leverage for marriage (help mitigate / cover up the event) I can see. But timing does not work for a spite/revenge motivation, because at the time of the assassination there was no indication that there would be a rejection. So it's for leverage or Maiyu had fake rapport the entire story to continue to attempt to get closer.

Gedad certainly has a different set of motivations that can work here though (easy excuse for not wanting to marry off daughter to rising family while bringing down said family).

Goddamn what rolls. Sucks for our home, but it is less than I feared after Gaz talked about it. Disappointed in our aunt and the old man, but I guess it was a really low roll.

On the case of the Ge plan, devious and kind of impressed with them. It makes sense. If you know that you have skeletons in your closet that could destroy the relationship with a young rising star, you want leverage on the one hand and it makes sense to kill Leng Jun to close any open ends left behind by their actions. Playing both sides in a conflict is always dangerous and can backfire, they tried and obviously failed. They obviously underestimated the bandit menace, but if we are honest that just puts them on the same level as virtually everyone else. So many officials and gentry member disregarded the bandits.

Nice confirmation, that yes, Ge Maiyu was supposed to marry Zhang Xiu. Funny that our bond is broken, because hey we didn't do anything to her. How could we possibly know that Zhang Xiu would take things so seriously? I mean yeah, you pissed us off, and Ge Dejun is one of the most repulsive member of the nobility we met till now, but hey we did not slander you Maiyu. I think now the offer for second or third wife would not sound so badly, right? If it would still be on the table...

Seriously, fuck yeah! I love that, that part of the plan worked beautifully. But I kind of fear what idiocy Ge Dejun will try. It was kind of over emphasized, that he will go for something.

Another thing that worked apparently really well, was our scouting actions. Having the bandits remain blind, and us getting a decent report of some of their forces will prove beneficial to us.

Last Gongsun Ye, you should be happy to get any member of our family if that is how you deliver/perform. Man, two actions and both soooo pathetic. He essentially wasted 700 wealth, by reducing the former action which cost another 200W.

Maiyu Knows Best by Dovahsith
(Made an attempt to fit another disney song to the situation and well...if it fits, then we've made a lucky escape.)

(GE MAIYU)
You want to go outside? Why, Liang Shu...

(sung)
Look at you, as fragile as a flower
Still a little sapling, just a sprout
You know why you should ally my clan's power

[LIANG SHU, spoken]
I know but...

[GE MAIYU]
That's right, to keep you safe and sound, Liang Shu
Guess I always knew this day was coming
Knew that soon you'd want to leave the nest
Soon, but not yet

[LIANG SHU, spoken]
But --

[GE MAIYU]
Shh!
Trust me, pet
Maiyu knows best

Maiyu knows best
Listen to Ge Maiyu
It's a scary world out there
Maiyu knows best
One way or another
Something will go wrong, I swear
Yellow Scarves, thugs
Poison ivy, quicksand
Barbarians and snakes
The plague

[LIANG SHU, spoken]
No!

[GE MAIYU]
Yes!

[LIANG SHU, spoken]
But --

[GE MAIYU]
Also large bugs
Men with pointy teeth, and
Stop, no more, you'll just upset me
Maiyu right here
Maiyu will protect you
Honorable Liang Shu, here's what I suggest
Skip the drama
Suppress the trauma
Maiyu knows best

Maiyu knows best
Take it from your advisor
On your own, you won't survive
Skittish, underdressed
Immature, clumsy
Please, they'll eat you up alive
Gullible, naïve
Positively grubby
Ditzy and a bit, well, hmm vague
Plus, I believe
Gettin' kinda chubby
I'm just saying cause I respect you
Maiyu understands
Maiyu's here to help you
All I have is one request

(spoken)
Liang Shu?

[LIANG SHU, spoken]
Yes?

[GE MAIYU, spoken]
Don't ever ask to leave this estate again

[Liang Shu nervously edges towards the door.]
