One thing I've been noticing on this thread is that most players experienced in this Universe (be it from actual history, the novel, the DW Series, the ROTK series or other material) have an obvious bias. Some are Wei guys, some Shu, other Lu Bu fan boys. I personally am a Cao Bao fan. The important thing to remember is that the views of all the other players except yours are clearly invalid and wrong and must be put in their place by vigorous, vicious debates and name calling. Also Gaz has it out for Gongsun Zan so we should all ptetty much accept that he will be a total #$/*.
Well you obviously have the absolute worst taste. I mean Han Dang is best. Even if he gets overlooked. I mean really Cao Bao? At least go for OG Cao Cao there mate.
Cao Cao? How mainstream can you get? Pffft. Overhyped, big time. The guy established a school of poetry. Cao Bao on the other hand; he's criminally under rated and the new thing. Dueled Xiahou Dun in a hurricane! It doesn't get any more epic! ****ed Lu Bus mom. That takes guts. Told Zhang Fei to go **** himself, then took the whole ****ing castle. Dynasty Warriors 19, it's going to be all Cao Bao.
Sorry. That is pressure. If it helps I'm still on on page 450ish so you've certainly got time before I catch up. And you've already established a great setting so I think the hard parts already done.
If this was a tale, this would be the start of it. A noble father brought down by criminals, traitors to all that is good, while he stood up for justice. A good man, who spent his whole life serving the people, was murdered, leaving behind a son.
In a tale, this is something special. The world mired in corruption, ruled by the greedy and only one family stands against such evil. Only one group stands for justice. Alone facing a world filled with adversity. But this is reality. Such tragic incidents have become commonplace with the world embroiled in chaos. The Mandate of Heaven being called openly into question. So the newly orphaned, wronged son of a righteous father is nothing special.
In a tale, with the world suffering and crying out for a saviour, a hero would arise. Working his way up from the bottom or through a tough situation. Facing the world with a smile on his face. The people would flock to his banner. Scholars, nobles and the wandering heroes would pledge their undying loyalty to his noble cause. But this is reality. Instead of joining the son, everyone tries to take advantage of the death of the beloved father. To gain renown, earn glory or just to make themselves out be more important than they are.
If this was a tale, Liu He would seem like the likely hero. A pleasant face, striking a gallant figure, even coming from the Imperial Line of the House of Liu. Born to a noble and virtuous father. Educated in the classics and groomed for civil service. Found to be an Abundant Talent by the Imperial Court and even declared First Class. A bright future ahead of him. A noble lineage, a noble character and blessed with talents by heaven. If this was a tale, would he not make perfect sense as the hero?/is he not perfect hero material?
Sadly this is not a tale told to children. He has no great destiny awaiting him. No hidden prophecy awaiting fulfilment. All Liu He has is a group of former retainers of his father. Xianyu Fu, who rescued him and his family out of Fanyang city. Tian De, who helped in securing supplies and horses for the escape. Bao Lang, who held off the pursuers and joined up a night ago. And Kui Yu, brave old Kui Yu, who watched over the family for his whole life. A loyal group of retainers, but they proved powerless in face of the evil, which befell the empire. The remaining flock is not even worth mentioning.
With his family Liu He is on the run and without a dime to spend, he has to seek shelter above even seeking revenge for the murder of his father. If this was a tale, this would be the start of his tale. But in reality, it is more likely to be the end of it.
At this moment, when the family rests in a lacklustre lodging in the wild, the retainers and civil servants of the shortly deceased Liu Yu are arguing about where to go and what to do. They are split on the issue and no decision has been made. However Liu He has till now not interceded. His word can end any discussion and result in a clear path forward. But he remained quiet, seemingly in thought. Pondering. Thinking. Planning. All the while the discussion goes on.
"If we continue on this path we will reach Youbeiping in a short while. The venerable Liu Zhen is the Grand Administrator of the commandery and will surely provide shelter to Young Master." Tian De states to the others. "The Grand Administrator will have called the levies and prepared himself to battle the Yellow Turban menace. With his help we will be able to avenge our deceased master!"
Some voice their agreement with the statement from Tian De and he bows in acceptance of their support, but before he can continue Bao Lang steps forward. Compared to Tian De he is the image of a warrior and holds himself that way. Even now he still wears his armour and is armed. He bowed with his hands clasped before his chest to Tian De and all those present. Though he speaks to Tian De his eyes always drift towards Liu He. "Respectfully I have to disagree with the Master of Records. A Grand Administrator is a great office of the state, but they are forbidden from taking action outside their region. Can we expect Liu Zhen to break the law? To defy his majesty's decree?" Silence follows his barked question. So he continues with a satisfied smile. "We should try to find shelter with Major Gongsun Zan. He is our best hope to avenge Lord Yu. He commands the strongest force in the region and is a valiant commander. The army will teach this rabble what fate awaits traitors and rebels!"
In response Tian De contorts his face. His displeasure at the words spoken plain to see for everyone. "My valued colleague speaks true a Grand Administrator is forbidden from such acts. An Inspector is normally meant to do this. He forgets, the Inspector is dead. And in times of chaos great men have to step up. To wait for the permission would spell doom for Imperial Han. To wait and not act is to have eyes but fail to see Mount Tai." He takes a deliberate pause and gives a contemptuous look to Bao Lang. "To address his proposal about Major Gongsun Zan. How many men does he command? To dispel the clouds and see the sun again we will need more. I may be a novice in the art of war, but even a novice like me knows that numbers matter. To rely on Gongsun Zan to be our saviour would be relying on the mantis to stop the chariot."
"Pah! If you don't know about the art of war, then stay quiet. A valiant warrior is worth a hundred, nay, I say a thousand worthless rabble." Bao Lang says in response.
"So Lord Yu was not a valiant warrior?" Tian De asks with an unpleasant smile on his face. " For he was laid low by such rabble."
"You dare!" Bao Long shouts and moves closer to Tian De. Standing head to head with him. Towering over the scholarly official.
"Obviously I dare! Your lust for battle could invite disaster upon all of us, but worst of all it could lead to the extinction of Lord Liu Yu's line. I will not stand for this."
For a moment it looks like the clearly agitated Bao Long will strike out. His muscles tense, but the moment goes by after he gives a pained look in the direction of Liu He. With a shake of his head he turns away. Tian De himself gives a contemptuous bow to the strong-willed warrior and then turns to the Young Master himself, but another retainer enters the discussion before Tian De can proclaim himself the winner of this council. It is Kui Yu, the oldest among the remaining retainers, and the one whose voice carries the most weight.
"Honorable Tian De, I think you are a little too harsh to our Bao Long here. He means well and no one here can doubt his loyalty to our former master. He was willing to lay down his life for Lord Yu's family. We have to be united to survive. We have to be united to avenge our Lord. We have to stand together to face what comes next. Disunity, quarreling and fighting with each other only helps our enemies. I have known you two for a long time and you are both good, well-meaning men. You are better than this. So act like it!" Under Kui Yu's withering glare Tian De crumbles and murmurs an apology to Bao Long. The warrior accepts it and offers his own apology in response. After this small display of reconciliation Kui Yu says." I think another alternative has been forgotten. We could also head North. The Protector of the Wuhuan, Gongqi Chou, was an ardent admirer of your father. His headquarters are in Shanggu. There is also a market and steady contact with the tribes. We will be able to marshal the power of the Han and the tribes against the villainous scum threatening the peace."
His proclamation is met with widespread consent. Tian De bows with a smile signalling his approval and Bao Long does the same with hearty laughter. They are followed by most of the remaining retainers. The only exception is the shining star of the moment, Xianyu Fu. Saviour of Fanyang city, the singular greatest reason the family of Liu Yu is still alive.
With a pained expression this hero of the hour steps forward and says. "Forgive me Young master, but I have to intercede. It is with great reluctance that I have to contradict Kui Yu, but I have to. The barbarians of the North are proud people and they loved your father, of this there is no doubt, but there are two problems with the proposed plan. First distant waters cannot put out a nearby fire. To first go North will take time and the Wuhuan tribe is mostly located at Laoxi. In this time the enemy will grow or fall. Both without any chance for us to avenge our lord. It is already burdensome to not be able to avenge Lord Liu Yu with our own power, but to play no part in it would shame us all beyond a measure. The second reason is of a more practical nature. I have an acquaintance among the Wuhuan, a man by the name of Yan Rou. He grew up among them and has earned their respect. According to him the Protector of the Wuhuan has no command over a great number of troops nor the love of the barbarians. I fear any call the honourable Gongqi Chong will make for assistance will remain unanswered."
This was clearly not what many among would have liked to hear. Disgruntled mutterings are the only answer Xianyu Fu receives. He and Kui Yu look at each other. It looks like a silent conversation is happening. Their thoughts are unclear to the remaining men in the room. For everyone except Liu He.
The young heir to the noble lineage of Liu Yu had listened to the ongoing discussion with interest. While he refrained from intervening or offering his own thoughts. Everyone was clear on him being the final authority of what will be done. This moment has come. He who is indecisive when a decision is needed is certain to meet disaster. Liu He will not be indecisive and so he stands up. Cutting a regal figure, many of the retainers were reminded of their former lord. Without having to raise his voice, everyone turned quiet. Ready to listen to his words. With slight nods in the direction of Kui Yu and Xianyu Fu he says, "I have heard the advice and listened to the wise retainers my father left behind. There was wise counsel, bold advice and valuable guidance. But we have to move forward and not linger any longer. The discussion has run its course and the final decision falls to me." Taking some deliberate steps forward he lets his gaze drift over the assembled men looking for signs of discontent. He finds none, so he continues in a more solemn tone."My father told me before he stepped out to face the masses that when the world is in danger, every person has their duty to save it. I will mourn my father for days! For months! For years! For my whole life! That such a light of righteousness was taken from the world is a tragedy. A sin against all that is good, fair and just. But this is not the time for mourning! As a filial son I have to follow my father's teachings. With the world in danger, I cannot mourn! I have to act! Will you follow?" Liu He roared out the last words.
"We hear and stand ready!" The first string of retainers fall on their knees clasping their hands above their hands.
After a short moment Bao Long follows along."This one will follow any command!"
Xianyu Fu laughs and says, "Well said, Lord Liu He. Well said indeed. This one has not forgotten the magnanimity of Lord's father. This one will repay his debt for the rest of his life. I hear and obey." With him also taking a knee before the young lord there are only a few left still standing. Many among them have an awestruck look on their face.
"You..no..Lord Liu He. What are your orders? This retainer is ready to lay down his life for his master!" Kiu Yu says and is one of the last to bend the knee before the young tiger.
"We will continue our way East. In Youbeiping we will leave my family under the protection of Liu Zhe and start gathering troops. With his support we will marshal enough troops to take revenge for my father. This will take time and during that time I will personally go to Liaoxi to ask for the support of the Shanyu of the Wuhuan, Qiuliju himself. Furthermore, we will send out a messenger to ask the Protector of the Wuhuan for his support. Another messenger will be sent to Major Gongsun Zan. This will allow us to combine all the forces into one. Against a disunited foe the Yellow Turbans proved formidable, but against the united power of the Northern Frontier they will crumble. For one chopstick is easily to be broken while a bundle of chopsticks are not."
"As our Lord commands, so will it be!" The assembled officers and retainers shout out.
In the blink of an eye the build up tension resolves and an amicable atmosphere returns. The course for the future is set and the die cast. All that remains is to let things play out.
While the retainers are now chatting with each other and flattering Lord Liu He, a young retainer, by far the youngest among the people at the meeting, makes a surprising remark.
"Should we not also send someone to the South? Colonel Zou Jing has some success against the Turban menace and a relative of the Lord, a man named Liu Bei, already swore to the Heavens to avenge Lord Liu Yu." These words were said in a light tone, but the response was abrupt. The surrounding retainers become quiet and turn to the speaker.
"What relative?" A confused Liu He asks the young man. "I am not aware of a relative by the name of Liu Bei."
Kui Yu gives the young retainer a thunderous glare stopping him from answering the question himself. "Forgive this one my lord, I tried to keep this unsavoury tale from reaching your ears. This Liu Bei is leading some volunteers to help Colonel Zou Jing. He claims to be kinsmen of Lord Liu Yu and yourself.
"He wants to use my father's great reputation as a sacrifice on the altar of his own ambition. How despicable!" Liu He spits out.
"This one fears it is like that. Ambitious fellows do not care for propriety, customs or the ancients. They only care about their own advancement." Kui Yu says with a disgusted look on his face.
When Liu He hears this his face contorts and pure hatred surfaces on it. "My father's body is barely cold and already people try to take advantage of his passing. How impudent...how despicable...I spit on this imposter! What relative! A shameless scoundrel, nothing more is this Liu Bei! To use the good name of my murdered father to grandstand. His impudence knows no bounds."
Hearing his words of condemnation the rest of the retainers join in raining insults upon insults down on the head of Liu Bei.
On such a note the meeting is finished and everyone prepares for the days ahead. The travel, the pleading and the fighting.
Now is this the beginning of a tale or just a side-note to the tale of another? The future will tell...
Another Omake, this time about the fate and decisions of the son of the deceased Liu Yu.
-[X] [Strategy] Use the existing strategy to split into three and attack the enemy simultaneously
-[X] [Ge Dejun] Speak to him in a neutral, courteous matter.
-[X] [Ku Jiu] Prefect Zhang and the garrison are capable of dealing with this.
-[X] [Huang Long] Use your strongest to fight their strongest. You will deal with this yourself.
-[X] [Wang Dang] The gentry force is the weakest, but you think they should be able to defeat an already beaten foe.
-[X] [Zhang Xiu] Send Mu Shun and Gongsun Ye to serve under Zhang Xiu directly for this battle.
-[X] [Gentry] The gentry army is fine, no need to interfere.
Knowing full well that taking too long to deliberate these matters would just result in tensions in the room to heat up once more, you speak quickly and decisively. There is no need to debate things earlier, and the Prefect has rewarded you the authority to make the final decision here.
"Prefect Zhang, I have full faith that you and the garrison are more than capable of routing these units approaching from our north west." You bring one blue block, and knock it against the red block symbolising Ku Jiu, toppling it over with your hands. "Their forces may be light and mobile, but their route takes them through wooded and hilly terrain which will hinder their manoeuvrability. This region provides ample locations suitable for a defensive effort or ambush, and I do not foresee much difficulty in your soldiers scattering the enemy."
"Very well." Zhang Xiu gives you a nod. "I will ready my men at once, Commandant Liang. We will ride out swiftly, and meet their own quick march with a concentrated and rapid strike of our own."
Jia Xu slinks back from the table, bringing his long sleeves together and concealing his hands beneath them. "I have already formulated a stratagem to thoroughly obliterate this enemy force, Zhang Xiu. Victory is assured, on our front at least."
You add quickly, "Before you set out, Prefect Zhang, allow me to assist your efforts and help ensure our success. I have observed for myself that the garrisons and militia are well trained and equipped, and well prepared for battle, but they are lacking in actual combat experience. I, on the other hand have no dearth of veteran fighters who know their way around a battlefield. Should it aid your success, I will volunteer the services of two of my mightiest warriors, Mu Shun and Gongsun Ye. Both are skilled with the martial arts, and they both have experience leading soldiers into battle. If you will have them, I promise they make a perfect compliment to your own forces."
By offering this, you really lose nothing - you have more than enough officers and lieutenants at your command, enough you can actually spare some without it hindering your own forces and your own plans. Mu Shun and Gongsun Ye can likely shine brighter in Zhang Xiu's army, where they will not be competing for leadership roles against the likes of Zhang Liao and Zhu Fang. Furthermore, every act of goodwill will just put you further in the graces of everyone involved, and will emphasise more that you are all working together towards the same noble end.
"Hmm, well, I certainly will not say no to the assistance of brave fighting men." Zhang Xiu replies with a slight smile. "Very good. Have these warriors report to my encampment before I depart, and I will assign them positions within my defensive force."
You give the man a nod of acknowledgement, then bring your attention back to the map.
"I am of the firm belief that it is crucial that all three foes are driven back or defeated." You state. "More battles await after today, and it will not do at all to grant even one single ounce of momentum to our enemies. It is for this reason, that I would ask that Lord Ge Dejun handles the bandits encroaching on our east." You look to the scion of the Ge, as you move one blue block to tap against the red block on the eastern side of the map.
"You would have me engage the weakest of the bandit units? Do you have that little confidence in my men and I, Commandant Liang?" Ge Dejun blurts out almost predictably, shaking a fist in your direction from across the table. "Such a base attempt at mockery! I will not simply allow you to take all the glory, here."
You shake your head. Despite your anger towards his clan, and worries about his own limitations, you have no intention of riling the man up here. "That is not true at all, Ge Dejun. I am of the belief that each of these three missions carries equal importance, and thus will earn equal plaudits. Think of this operation as a three legged stool, should even one of the legs crumble, the entire seat will collapse. Your force is best suited in countering the eastern brigands, and I have sincerely the upmost
confidence in you and your noble warriors."
If you had wanted to, you could have attempted to humiliate or even kill Ge Dejun by allowing him to charge off against the strongest bandit force, and whilst that might have benefited you in the long term, in the short term it could destabilise the entire defensive campaign. For now, you will try and placate this hotheaded aristocrat, and continue working at swaying his allies to your own side.
"The people will sing your praises once you win them a victory." You continue explaining to him, as calmly and carefully as you can. You see your words starting to soothe him, and he begins to calm down. "With the local knowledge of the Ge and Huo clans, I am certain you will find terrain to the east you can use to your advantage, to bamboozle or disrupt these criminals. Hopefully, you can not only win a glorious battle, but keep most of your force intact, as well. Perhaps then, in later battles against the bandit reinforcements, you and your men can take the vanguard, or have the glory of the first charge."
Ge Dejun is silent for a short while. He drums the map table with his fingers, and looks to each of his lieutenants and retainers in turn. His brow furrows down as if he is deep in thought, weighing up his options. Finally, he raises a finger, jabbing it at the toppled piece on the eastern side of the map.
"I have decided to display to this ragged bunch the full might of the Ge clan. The only ones of this miserable lot that will be permitted to live, will be those whelps sent whimpering back to their filthy hovels to tell the story of the righteous fury of Xinshen's gentry! These cowards shall rue the day they dared to strike out against us." He announces proudly, with a broad and toothy grin. "Prefect Zhang, and Commandant Liang, you need only await the good news of not only a successful victory, but a battle where not one drop of blood is spilled from my men!"
As he declares this, you listen to some of his followers and retainers proclaim their support and praise his words. You do wonder if he really is up for the task, you would hardly be shocked if he ended up getting most of his men killed today.
"Allow me this opportunity to repay the debt that I owe to you, Master Ge Dejun." One of his fellows says, a strong looking young man with a frankly impressive set of facial hair for his age. "I would finally like the chance to return the kindness you have shown me."
"I am glad to hear that, Taishi Ci." Ge Dejun responds to this young warrior, "I will be relying on your archery to bring us victory today!"
Moving swiftly on, whilst the Ge retainers already proclaim their victory before they have even fought, you move the last blue block to strike the final red one.
"Lastly, I will take the Azure Lances to deal with Huang Long's incursion." You declare. "Hopefully, the flat plains and grasslands of central Xinshen shall allow my cavalry to get an edge here. I swore to the people of Xinshen, and the gentry, that I would protect them, so I will try and continue to be true to that oath by defending them this day. My men are well trained and fully ready for this."
Zhang Xiu looks down to the map table, gives the slightest of smiles, then looks up. The Prefect addresses the room. "Excellent. You each have your objectives. I expect all three fronts to win success today. Let us not waste any more time, let us march out to war, and to victory." He looks to you, then back to the rest. "Follow the orders given by Commandant Liang, and drive back the enemy. I expect everyone to come back with good news. Now, let us move out!"
With a unanimous decision, the room gives bowed salutes, and departs. Your own friends and retainers follow you, as you return to your camp, and enact your march north.
==
"Cao Xing, scouting report!" You are sat on top of Dappled Cloud at the head of the Azure Lances, around three hours after you left the strategy meeting in Xinshen. Before you lie open plains, with scattered hamlets, farmsteads, manors and estates in every direction. All around you, a column of dozens or perhaps even hundreds of refugees is fleeing south past your soldiers. Startled and frightened men and women, carrying their children, pets, or whatever belongings they had left, abanonding their homes and running for their lives. Some stop to help the injured, sickly or elderly, others just shove past the weaker among them and push them aside in an attempt to save their own skins. You had seen flows of refugees before, from the pillaged northern counties, but all these people are from Xinshen county, your home. Already, their homes and villages in the north have been looted and raided by those vile bandits from Heishan. In the distance, you can see columns of smoke and fire plume into the air. Having marched on the open road, you have moved your army off the trail to allow the fleeing citizens with their carts and carriages and livestock to pass by. Some plea and beg you for aid as they pass.
"Yes! Yes boss!" Cao Xing, having returned from doing recon, salutes to you. "Up ahead, a big bandit force is laying waste to the farms and villages, taking anything that isn't bolted down. They're rounding up cattle and sheep and pigs, shooting geese and chickens, even taking the offerings from graves and tombs! Anyone who resists they kill. Their force is big too, with yellow banners showing a dragon! Right now, they are still a bit scattered and looting, but are sure to regroup soon and continue their march!"
"Such tragedy, such maladies!" Liang Du laments with a sigh. "Is there no justice left in this sorry world?"
Lu Lingqi punches her palm loudly. "Of course there is justice...us! We will make them pay for this, it's why we are here."
Xu Jian frowns, and shakes his head. "We cannot allow any more innocents to suffer or be harmed. It is our solemn duty to protect as many people as we can. So many are using this main road to flee to the city, we should make a stand in their defence."
"I agree, Xu Jian." Ce Xiang nods to him. "Let's shield all these poor folk, and make those criminals realise that their actions have consequences!"
Zhu Fang lets out a primal snort, his nostrils flaring, his face going red. "Rargggghhh! Enough of this! How dare those bastards pillage Xinshen so brazenly?! Let's march now, and grind their bones into dust! Let's crush them, like we crushed every other filthy brigand we faced so far, Liang Shu! With me at the head, we can win this with just one charge, I promise! I'll deliver the head of that supposed "dragon" myself!"
"Speed is the essence of warfare, in my humble opinion." Zhang Liao offers. "Whilst they are preoccupied with looting and filling their sacks, a series of raids and skirmishes could destroy their cohesion, and disrupt their unity."
"Hmm." Yu Zhong loudly clicks his tongue at your side. "Winning here is one thing, and swift action is important, but this Huang Long may yet prove to be a calibre or two above the level of thugs we have dealt with so far. This is merely the first battle of a longer campaign, as well. If we are to win the larger battle, we need to preserve as much of our strength and potential as we can, Liang Shu. Perhaps the greed of these outlaws could allow us to deploy some trickery here?"
"Give us your orders, Liang Shu!" Lu Lingqi urges. "I have no plans here myself, but I will execute your will no matter your command!"
What strategy will you use to fight the forces of Huang Long?
[] Xu Jian's plan - Make a defensive formation on the main road, cover the refugees. Force the enemy to fight you, and take not one step back.
[] Zhu Fang's plan - Offense is the best defence. Charge out with your full might and strike them head on.
[] Zhang Liao's plan - Split your cavalry and send them on hit and run attacks on the groups of bandits still pillaging. Once they are sufficiently weakened, your main force will then advance as well.
[] Yu Zhong's plan -Hide most of your men in a nearby abandoned village off the main road. Have some of your men with your carts of supplies on the main road, and have them feign fear and weakness, and scatter once they see the enemy. Whilst the bandits are busy looting your supplies, spring an ambush against them. May cost you Wealth.
[] I have another plan! Write in a (simple) strategy. No 4D Chess.
With the size of the Azure Lances, it is best to organise them into units, for the battle ahead. Delegate command to your subordinates, and they will carry out your orders according to their own abilities, and the soldiers assigned to them.

Sorry Bro, but as much as I wanna smash these Guys to Pieces, even against mere Bandits a blind charge is not a good Option...and these are hardly just mere Bandits.

I definitely like Zhang Liao's plan here. Setting a trap is great and all, but it's not like their entire force is gonna come down for a few merchant carts. We'd be trading wealth for taking a bite out of them, and then we still have the rest of the fight.
OTOH if they're already busy and distracted, a quick lightning strike raid will get them panicked and disorganized, and then it's just a case of mopping up small clusters of resistance and a hoard of routing cowards.
Edit: and as mentioned below, cavalry is hella strong. Sending them raiding is gonna hurt. Not as strong as a proper charge, but I'm sure they'll get a chance at that further on in the battle.
Cavalry charges and tactics in general had developed to be quite effective by the time of the end of the Han! The Chinese had access to plentiful and strong warhorses, not to mention the addition of foreign auxiliaries. The proto-stirrup was in use by this time, as well as barding and armour for horses. The Chinese had developed more advanced saddles by the end of the Han, too, allowing a rider much more flexibility as well as stability when charging with a lance.
