Update was pretty neat.

Chang He and Mo Lian remained silent, the younger of the two tugging nervously at his beard. However, it Chun Yan who spoke up, a frown on her hard features. "...I remember my gran telling a story 'bout the gods sending down a star to punish a wicked dragon king. Just an old folk tale though."

It's interesting how one of Ling Qi's minions for this exercise heard the same legend that Liao Zhu heard from the Cloud Tribe barbarians. I wonder if where she's from was originally Cloud Tribe territory or if it was just stories travelling after being repeated. The origins legends really ties in with the Cloud Tribe name too.

Her little brother stamped his feet in happiness as he materialized, pleased that he could be of help. Ling Qi smiled, and pretended not to notice the expressions on her subordinates faces at the appearance of Zhengui.

I bet Zhengui just soaked up people being in awe of him.

Hopefully picking up a CDE insight wasn't crucial to finding something here.

[X] Work with Chun Yan to hunt or mark down dangerous and unfriendly spirit beasts.

I strongly disagree with scouting for barbs and this would allow Chun Yan to hunt a great deal more beasts.

[X] Work with Mo Lian, using her flight to help him with mapping and cataloguing.

With a bit of look, flight and exploration will let us see if things are going on in the distance. and, I am curious what cartographing will raise, from our abilities.

Want do good job. And this seems like it would give Ling Qi a chance to see the whole of the valley, maybe noticing something relevant for when the main force arr-

Never mind it's misspelled.

Oh god, not a good sign.

"...It is probably just a flowery metaphor for something," Ling Qi said
Ha! You wish.

There was a winding vein of something strange in the earth. Where it passed, grass and trees showed faint signs of withering sickness, and certain spirit beasts were more aggressive.
Danger Will Robinson! Danger!

Even Ling Qi found her skin prickled under the strange glow, and perhaps it was only her imagination, but her gown rustled unnaturally, the trailing hems seeming to shy away from the sickly light.
Great, poisonous Xianxia radiation. Just what we need.

"But… Your Senior Brother is perhaps a touch paranoid."
It isn't paranoia if it's true!

Also, we stopped a large hill as a relative newbie. That's pretty awesome! Though I'm concerned that Zhengui won't be able to help us if we have to fight in the taint with his susceptibility.

There was a winding vein of something strange in the earth. Where it passed, grass and trees showed faint signs of withering sickness, and certain spirit beasts were more aggressive. It seemed that the more closely aligned a spirit was to earth or wood qi, the greater the effect. Even Zhengui reported feeling slightly queasy when he dug his roots into the earth where the strange taint passed. They struck down maddened beasts as necessary, and kept pressing south.

Eventually, the trail led them to a grey and withered valley, filled with bubbling muck. The grasses and plants within were twisted and grey, save for tumorous patches of color that marked the bark of some trees. They had not been able to investigate peacefully. Blighted and glowing insects had swarmed out
So, there's a poison deep with the earth that's agitating spirts, particularly those affiliated with earth and wood, and is speculated to be associated with a Great Spirit blessing the Cloud Tribes.

...All three options from the last vote would have led to this valley, in some form or another, wouldn't it? The moving mountain spirits, the Heaven-mutated Black Earthworms, the ghosts of Cloud Tribe-slain Imperial dead... those all have their roots in this disturbance of the Cloud Tribes' Great Spirit. The only difference is if Ling Qi and her squad could resolve the symptom.

Well, the symptom of the moving earth spirits was not resolved, so let's hope that the root cause being utterly beyond any among the Inner Sect mitigates this failure!
