Threads Of Destiny(Eastern Fantasy, Sequel to Forge of Destiny)

Voted best in category in the Users' Choice awards.
No, we all understand Biyu has free will (in-universe at least), but if the vote doesn't affect her, then the vote doesn't matter. Honestly it's not a big deal if this vote never ends up mattering very much, but here and now, when we're voting on it, we have to operate under the assumption that it will matter. Otherwise, what's the point? There'd be nothing to argue with eachother about.

It matters, and I'm not saying it doesn't, but it's a small nudge in one direction, not an unchangeable choice in her path for the rest of her life or anything like that.

Okay, so how would you like us to discuss this?

I could say, "Hey, if we vote for wanderlust, that increases the odds that she joins Ling Qi on journeys by a few percentage points". Then someone else could say, "If we vote for Palaces, that increases the odds she'll become a good Ling Clan administrator by a few percentage points." That sounds like a choice that a person could choose to make, I guess.

Or how about we keep doing what we're doing, and just implicitly understand that this vote won't necessarily decide the trajectory of Biyu's life. That sounds easier to me.

Because otherwise voting to turn our kid sister into a tool of our clan's rise to power would feel really bad. :V

The choices really do seem like 'make Biyu useful' / 'let Biyu have fun'. And like any ruthlessly maximizing SV voter, I am reeeeally feeling the pull of ambition even though wanderlust would make a lot more sense given Ling Qi's notorious adventures.
Point of order: "ambition" isn't a word that appears in the vote.

Striving to reach high places and wanderlust to visit wide and far are both examples of ambition, which oxford dictionary defines as "a strong desire to do or to achieve something, typically requiring determination and hard work." :V

I think it's important for us to treat both as paths of ambition, of something Biyu (potentially) aspires to.

Also, I think it's worth pointing out to folks that we are setting up shop on the frontier. We're practically in the wilds, and it's going to be the work of centuries and millenia to see the region "civilized". There's oodles of exploration to be done locally, I dunno why there's this framing that the second option sees Biyu exclusively disapperated to far off horizons. She'll come and go from narrative focus regardless of our choice here, cause that's what characters do.

Edit: that said, I don't think this vote's a huge deal. We'll love our little sis unconditionally regardless. At least up until she dies tragically.

For a very long time, I've wanted Biyu to grow up notably different from Qi, I've wanted Biyu to never be able to comprehend Qi's domain fully because it comes from a place of total deprivation, I've wanted Biyu to have a happy childhood that shines in her eyes as a teenager and adult. Embedding a romantic sense of wonder for the world and all its beauty is a great addition to that. Embedding ambition just doesn't sit right with me at all.

Because her question about Xiangmen indicates she had the curiosity for this to be a excellent dream.

People have a tendency to catastrophize (I've certainly been known to do so sometimes), so I think when arguments start getting particularly extreme in terms of their claims it is useful to take a step back and remember that the effects are not as extreme as many people are claiming. I am not necessarily advocating people change the whole way they argue this, I am attempting to remind people that the stakes are not as high as many of those arguments make it sound.

I'm not trying to get people to speak about this differently, I'm trying to serve as a reminder that any extreme statements are hyperbole, not necessarily the actual results.

We're raising her in a rural area, the exotic locale of "downtown" will call to her like a siren. You can't fool me, I've watched Hallmark movies! :V

Hmm. I know we won't get time with the empress but I wonder whether LQ will get some imperial attention. Will the empress have children and grandchildren as a part of her entourage while visiting?
IIRC CRX mentioned there isn't a child of the empress at a suitable age for marriage with CRX but there are grandchildren in that age range. This was before Tienli's birth announcement so we only have info about princes, we might have an imperial princess within our age range since CRX only talked about males in this context. LQ could probably sit in a meeting in that sphere since her social position is high enough

Ling Biyu will be a true Xianxia protag and defy the heavens!

You say that like we're just going to be sitting around at home. We're basically training to be the Cai clan's chief diplomat. The Savage Seas, Thousand Lakes, Golden Fields, White Sky, Underworld, and perhaps even beyond to the Thousand Princes and other distant lands. I want Biyu to get some quality 'Ling Qi tribulation adventure' time when she's ready.

No, I fully understand we will often be on trips to do things. But if two people are both often on trips out, then it's much less likely for them both to be home simultaneously. It will happen of course, but if Biyu is cultivating a way of exploring the world, that's where she will spend most of her time. I also think it's unlikely that the places she wants to see will be the political meetings we are going to, but that's just a gut feeling.

One of the cores of Ling Qi's way, and more importantly the story, is family. And I want to explore that from multiple angles, and with multiple characters. With how small our clan currently is, and the fact that for several decades (if not a century or more) it's looking like the only clan members who will be anywhere close to peers with Ling Qi will be Biyu and Ling Nuan (lightning rocker). Call me greedy, but I want to keep both of them as close to the narrative core of the story as I can.

I'm very sure we will take our sister on Ling Qi Adventures(tm), that doesn't require wanderlust to happen. Frankly, I don't think any force on heaven or earth could stop us from doing that :p

Oof, this vote is tough.

On one hand, I do really like the idea of having Biyu be a more constant character in the narrative later on down the line, which makes the first option more appealing; even if one doesn't expect Ling Qi to just stay at home doing paperwork all the time—which I don't—the reality is that a wandering Biyu is simply going to be less available than one staying closer to home. I'm already sad that Hanyi isn't around atm.

On the other hand, the idea of Adventurer Biyu, going out and exploring the world, coming back with pictures and stories of all the places she's been, sounds absolutely fantastic. It would mean less overall Biyu presence, but the presence she would have could be so very evocative and fascinating that it may well make up for it.

Since I can't decide based on effect, I'm going with the actual dream I like more, so...

This is beautiful imagery that the other option doesn't really match. I'd like to have this dream, please.
