To my Honorable Mother,
I have no doubts that you have heard rumors of what has transpired here in the Wall. I am aware of how far your eyes and ears spread, so I suspect you will have a less distorted image than most by the time this reaches you. Firstly, I will confirm one thing. Elder Guan Zhou of the Argent Peak Sect has been slain. He fell to a Cloud Tribe Khan working in tandem with another enemy.
His death has shaken the south and the Argent Peak Sect greatly. Though Sect Head Yuan He is filled with wrath however, his discipline and leadership has prevented any from taking foolish and impetuous actions in seeking vengeance.
But the Sect is moving to war footing. There can be no doubt that within a few years, there shall be another great campaign against the nomad tribes of the Wall, and this new foe as well.
But, these are all things which you may hear through your own ears. As your daughter, I must report more personal matters. Xiulan was involved in the opening assault. She had been placed on garrison duty over a collection of three towns in the foothills of the Sects land. It was a perfectly ordinary assignment, I assure you mother.
However, it was the site of a probing attack and a deployment of the new enemy's assets. One which claimed the life of another inner disciple stationed there. My sister was not harmed however, thanks to intervention of her Sect Sister and friend.
…I am aware that you shared some mixed feelings with me over that girl, Ling Qi, who has seemed to catalyze Xiulan's ambitions. But once she explained to me the situation which lead to that terrible wound she suffered.
Well, it is dishonorable of me to hold any grudge against a girl who likely saved my sister from a probable death. I hope you will take that into consideration, despite her refusal of the clans offer, Mother.
Xiulan herself is distraught, both from her friend's injury and feeling as if she caused it, but her physical condition has not deteriorated any further. Its required upkeep remains intensive but, my sister is learning to live with the fruit of her choices. Though it pains me that she must.
But, I suspect I will not have provenance over that much longer, will I Mother?
I have not yet informed Xiulan, but I strongly suspect that there will be a letter already being penned, if not in transit by the time this reaches you.
It would not do for the two great talents of the Gu to both be risked in an out of province conflict, would it?
If my guess is correct, please allow me to plead one thing on behalf of my sister. Despite the collapse of her attachment to the han boy, and her estrangement from her fiance, she is happy here. She has if nothing else, found a true companion she will sorely miss. If you will take her from this, and I do not deny you are right to do so if I am to fulfill my oaths to the Sect for my term… Please, release her from her contract to the Fan.
I know it will be a difficult matter to disentangle, but it is an arrangement which can only bring misery and eventual shame to both parties. Gu Xiulan's disdain and contempt would further damage her 'fiance' and being forced to tolerate what she sees as his mediocrity would only drive her temper and cultivation in a cruel direction.
If need be, I would accept a marriage to an older scion of the Fan. I am aware of at least two who I would find tolerable, and allowed to marry out, if that is the path which must be taken.
Regardless. Mother, I implore you and Father to remove this shackle from around your youngest daughter's ankle. In the past I believe it might have been resolved, but if Gu Xiulan is to return home, she does not need this weight upon her as well.
And, should you be reading this together, as is your habit… Firstly. I greet my Honorable Father. Your dutiful daughter has been deeply absorbed in cultivation and tasks for the Sect. I am confident in the success of my deployments in the time to come.
But setting that aside. I hope that you will look in on Gu Xiulan's progress and cultivation, Father. If she is to return to Pheonixhome, then she will require encouragement and teaching which I believe only you can give. Though I know this will pain Mother, my sister has revealed that she is a martial cultivator at heart.
Gu Xiulan is a warrior born, and I do not believe she will do well if this path is denied to her. Whatever other paths she might have taken were severed when she chose to raise her hand to heaven and demand tribulation for strength.
Her pain hurts me, but after witnessing her growth, and I can no longer say that I do not support my sisters path. Her path is the purer one between us, she walks the path of our ancestors with head held high.
Beyond this point I have compiled my report on conditions in the south, my observations of these… cave demons which have assailed the sect, including the shadow clad thing which my sister and her friend slew. I do not expect they are a trouble close to the Golden Fields, but I am as always, your dutiful daughter and will leave more experienced minds to determine what I may not…
To my beloved and dutiful daughter.
I cannot say your recommendations were well received. Your Mother will send her own reply, and I will not speak of what she might say. That is between the two of you.
On the matter of the Fan betrothal. Your mother and I had already been in agreement that the contract should be voided. We were only in disagreement of whether it might be possible to arrange a different match for Xiulan rather than canceling entirely. Given your words I have opted for the latter.
Gu Xiulan will be returning home. But my youngest will no longer have this mistake of her parents hanging over her head. Nor will you be paying the cost you suggested. The error was ours and we will weather its repercussions.
You too have your own concerns. Do not falter, and bring home glory to the Gu name.
As for your other suggestion. I will look into things. If it is as you say, then I would be a poor father not to offer what wisdom I have to a child struggling on the same snarled turns in the Way which I have tread. When you inform Xiulan of her withdrawal, let her know in her heart that there is no failure or disapproval behind it. As you say, though it manifests differently, she too is a great talent of the Gu clan. And it is her talent which informs our choice.
You have done much to take care of your sister, Yanmei, and for that, your Father is thankful. Along with this letter, you will find the documents for withdrawal from the Sect. Please inform your sister soon. The carriage which will bring her home will not be far behind.
