Threads Of Destiny(Eastern Fantasy, Sequel to Forge of Destiny)

Voted best in category in the Users' Choice awards.
In case anyone else is interested in the count:
  • 33 arguments for Mystery, on any grounds
  • 14 arguments for Power on the explicit grounds that the baby said it (a handful of these listed other reasons too)
  • 28 arguments for Power on apparent other grounds, though many are very brief and/or cited other parts of the chapter (or prior posts), so a significant subset likely should actually count as the preceding
  • (my criteria for categorization - or what posts to ignore - are necessarily sloppy, so count yourself if you really want and don't be surprised if your numbers are slightly different)
So yes, complaining that a lot of people voted for Power just for that is legitimate, it's at least ⅓ of the explicit arguments for it, and likely more. People marked my earlier comment "Funny" but I wasn't joking when I said that SV should never become a parent.
Might I humbly suggest that saying I should never have children because I voted power because that's what Dress-chan wants is A. rhetorical overkill B. an excellent way to start a flame war and C. a good way to engender bitterness if my option loses, whereas before your post I was fine with Mystery possibly winning.

What pushes me towards Power is that I expect the dress will have an interesting perspective on it. It and its sibling themselves are a medium throughout which the Cai express their power since a pillar of Cai rule is the ability of the duchess to use clothes as reward and in haggling. At the same time our specific dress also ties to Power via its existence as a uniform. It's the physical link between LQ and the institution she has made herself an appendage to.
This notably contrast nicely with the Power of Zhengui. Theirs is far more primal. For Zhengui overwhelming inherent Power is a simple birthright and their relationship with the concept is about how that then defines their lives.

I'm sorry for my part in starting a flame war. I was upset about being told that my premise wasn't true.

My least favorite thing about the tie to Mystery, is how the insight sounds.
Mystery III (4/5): Hunger is privation of the body, loneliness privation of the heart, Ignorance privation of the mind. In privation, seek answers.
It doesn't scream mysterious to me. I feel like we've not explored it as much as we should have, and would like to do so. Especially since the Hidden Moon has given us so much.

My least favorite thing about the tie to Power, is that it could change our look. I really like the ethereal beauty Ling Qi embraces, and dislike the idea of a "power suit". Ling Qi seems to share my aversion to emanating powerful vibes, and I was trying to side with her on this debate. I'm also getting tired of power seemingly winning so many times.

It is a relief to get our dress back and really fun to get to see it's first words spoken to us. I was just afraid people would naturally side with her desires without thinking of the ramifications of what it might mean to our appearance.

Dang this is a close/important one...

I think all the arguments are very good and very convincing.

I do like Mystery as a an aesthetic better. It's a theme we haven't explored much lately and I would really like to keep the spy/thief components of LQ as intact as possible because I really find them much more compelling than the diplomatic stuff.

On the other hand, I do not feel like this is the appropriate place to explore Mystery. Dress-Chan is not LQ. As it has been pointed out, DC is one of LQ's earliest links to real power. It is her link to the Cai, her strongest talisman, her greatest defense. She's described as having felt powerful for the first time when she put on the Dress. This Dress has always been about power and I think that should remain the core of what it is.

As I've stated, I hope that it doesn't mean we can't have a little Mystery in it, as well. Mystery is a Powerful Aesthetic after all. There are two more concepts that define DC in the end. Even if we can't get Mystery as another core into Dress-Chan, we can probably shape her theories about Power through our actions and discussions with her.

In the end, I'm staying in camp

[X] A tie to Power

Given how close this is, I really hope that whichever loses is an option in the next vote on Dress-chan's concepts. I suspect it would have good odds of winning. And Power + Mystery is a solid combo of concepts thematically, IMO.

i'm torn between the two options, let's look the pros and cons of each choice here (at least in my opinion):

1 - Power

Pros
  • More fitting with the Narrative
  • I like the idea of a dress being more active outside of LQ (I'm imagining Dr. Strange's Cloak)
  • the villain aesthetic

Cons
-I like Tall Qi, but I don't want high heels for her
-I think it's gonna be difficult to incorporate Power Moves in the Battle Scenes (MAJOR CON)

2 - Mystery

Pros
-Easier to fit in Battle Scenes due to the Subtlety of Mystery
-A different concept to explore in LQ's spirits
-More emphasis on Thieving and Skulking (Ninja outfit?)

Cons
  • Less fitting with the Narrative (although it's a dress with a lot of secret pockets) (MAJOR CON)

Final Thoughts:

I think that solely trusting that Yrs has a plan for each option doesn't cut it, we should choose options that facilitate his job. We all know what happened in the "Starless Night' Reflection" art exploration in Bai Xia Anxi's mind; it was cool, but it didn't connect much with the themes it was proposing. So, I don't mind taking a narrative loss here for better and more cohesive battle scenes later.

It's not as if Mystery is an inherently bad Concept for Dress's development.

Once she has interacted more with the world around her now that she is beginning to gain awareness, arriving at it from the feeling of Curiosity, it would be quite interesting.
But as her first fundamental concept, linking to LQ's understanding of Mystery as privation of the mind?

It just doesn't fit.

Hold the eff up, I just realized something vital! What is the Ling clan symbol?! Like our equivalent of the Cai's butterfly. I can't remember if anything was ever mentioned in the story.
