Threads Of Destiny(Eastern Fantasy, Sequel to Forge of Destiny)

Voted best in category in the Users' Choice awards.
[X] Truth and lies are the weft and warp of communication. Clarity, understanding, these determine the quality of words.

I'll pick this, just to be contrarian. The points that were made were good, but still. Myeh.

[X] Trust arises from choice. Love arises from trust. There can be no perfect safety, save in death. For love or trust to exist, so must the chance of heartbreak and betrayal.

There's maybe an interesting echo or refrain to this; that is, that heartbreak and betrayal is not necessarily the end of love and trust.

It states that you need to have the potential for heartbreak and betrayal to have trust and love, and this implies that if you do suffer heartbreak and betrayal, then that could be the end of love or trust...

... But both Ling Qi and Hanyi and their mothers experienced love and betrayal and heartbreak and endings. Ling Qi fled her mother, feeling abandoned and betrayed ((and her mother felt abandoned by her child too, in turn)) -- but that was not necessarily the ending of things, because Ling Qi and her mother reconnected.

Hanyi and her family though... her father tried to betray his wife. And then Hanyi's mother... kept Hanyi as a child for a long long time, unable to let her go, and lingering herself. And Ling Qi had to steal Hanyi away; both for Hanyi's own good, and Zeqing's own even, even if it led to her (temporary? reincarnating?) passing on.

... I suppose another mirror or counterpart to this insight would be:

Only true family, or true friends, can really deeply hurt you.

So if something hurt so much, maybe it's because you're family or friends or loved ones. Being betrayed by a stranger is harder, unless they fool you or lie to you for long enough to make you think they care, or the relationship was onesided or imagined in some way.

That's an interesting Insight to apply to Cai Renxiang's situation, actually! Because the primary betrayal of love and trust in Cai Renxiang's life is Lin Hai, her childhood mentor and guardian, leading her to meeting Cai Shenhua and subsequently experiencing unimaginable agony and hurt.

This ties into Cai Renxiang's difficulty with the conception of Family as anything by a harmful and degenerative thing; other than Lin Hai, there has not been any evidence that Cai Renxiang has any adult that expresses love and affection towards her.

Her father doesn't care about her at all. Her mother is a monster that always hurts her. Her martial teacher in Xia Ren is incapable of motherhood. Her Sect Elders were barred by her mother from intimately interacting with her in the Outer Sect, and don't seem to have much interaction with her in the Inner Sect.

I don't think Cai Renxiang has anybody to serve as a positive friendly mentor on a personal level. However, Lin Hai once did. Perhaps he can do so once again, if Cai Renxiang is moved to reconnect with him. (And thence, towards figuring out a way to act as a sister to Cai Tienli? Towards understanding how familial love can be a positive and non-corruptive influence in the world?)

[X] Trust arises from choice. Love arises from trust. There can be no perfect safety, save in death. For love or trust to exist, so must the chance of heartbreak and betrayal.

Honestly none of this is helped by the fact that one of the additional reasons that Cai Tenli exists is to serve as a backup and goad for Cai Renxiang.

In the "Smugging Moon" it's openly stated that at least some people were suspsecting that Cai Renxiang was going to be a failure. When she was fourteen or fifteen they were already hanging up the "Washed up child prodigy" banners and so on.

This has faded somewhat, but at the time despite what others say it does seem as if she interpreted it as a sign of disfavor on TOP of everything else it was. (Shenhua can't lie, but she can have multiple purposes to her actions.)
