Threads Of Destiny(Eastern Fantasy, Sequel to Forge of Destiny)

I love Ji Rong's heartfelt description of the situation.

Now, I *think* both Ji Rong and Ling Qi has gotten the gist of the situation - Sun Shao made a pact with an ancient enemy of the Empire, and has through some means inducted Sun Liling into that pact without warning her ahead of time, hence feeling betrayed. There's not much else that could effect a change in behavior and cultivation like this that you'd find *in that jungle*.

Now, Ji Rong's priority is "getting Sun Liling out of that pact", because as long as she's still being controlled by it she'll be in the crosshairs of the MoI if they ever find out about it. Ling Qi's goal has to be "getting the actual traitor dealt with", but we're not heartless.

So... how are we going to organize - under the noses of the high level cultivators like General Xia, who *will* go "slash and burn" if she finds out about the Sun treason - an intervention and Spirit-ectomy (because we're going to have to remove that Jungle Spirit she's bonded to) for Sun Liling, who is both socially and martially superior to our friend group?

I mean, we might have to smash half her cultivation to get her out from under the yoke of the Red Queen or whatever her name was, and if she *is* released she's still not going to be happy with *us*, but I kind of see it as the only way of saving her and Ji Rong from being purged by the Empire along with Dear Granddad.

I don't know that it's actually treason. So far the Sun have been a dutiful part of the empire, loyal to the throne and used to keep the Bai in line with the rest of it. The jungle goddess doesn't actually change this. Yet.

So I guess I'm questioning whether there's actually a reason to consider them traitors, besides them joining with the one who killed the sage emperor back in the day. But there has been ages of time and oceans of blood since then.

The red jungle might be a useful tool against the ash walkers, if they ever come in contact. The Bai are going to propagandize the heck out of this- "going against the orders of your superiors leads to you becoming everything you hated" sort of story line. I don't know how the ebon rivers are going to take it. The Jin are probably going to be happy enough to treat the jungle as a bastion that secures their flanks against the ones they raid. The Xuan probably don't have an opinion?

The real issue is going to be when the celestial dragon finds out. I think it will cause a split between the peaks and their sublime ancestor, and that will really core out the reliability of politics.

We're talking about a White with a combat-focused Way, with the resources of a Ducal clan, one of the mightiest armies in the Empire (even the footsoldiers are Greens), and the backing of a Sublime-tier spirit. The Empire ain't purging shit, at least not if they want to avoid a cataclysmic war.

It getting out would fuck the Sun, though, in the medium term. Considering how many people were like, "We fought to beat those damn bastards" and here is their leader with damn bastards in his head.

But that'd be more, like, "Weakening his rule" or "Leading to a breakdown later" rather than, "Oh, and that's it for the Sun."

...there is no way the Empire tries to purge Granddad unless there's literally no other option.

He's an 8th Realm with an entire Province behind him, that would be, uh...

It depends on which way Sun Shao's plans go. Right now, he's colluding with an *actual* enemy of the Empire, not just a potential one. The Red Queen or whatever its name is is a known entity that previously killed one of the Emperors.

If Sun Shao wants to make a grab for the Empire? Then there'll be a fight one way or another, because the Bai and the Cai won't stand for it. If Sun Shao basically tells the Empire to screw off, the Sun are now independent? That's massive loss of face, and the Empire might have to bring them to heel or face a complete collapse because the other provinces decide "hey, we don't need the Empire either."

Either way, huge chance of a fight, one that only gets less winnable over time as Sun Shao has more time to set up for it without anyone knowing.

So, it's possible that we're going to have to rip the spirit out of Sun Liling and make her turn state's evidence against her grandpa to save the Empire (and her).

Ling Qi lives in *interesting* times.

Red Garden has always turned out a hell hole that no one should have ever invaded. And now they will have Sun Shao - aka either War-focused White+ Realm or the Carrion King Local Spirit Lord. "Empire might have to bring them to heel" doesn't mean that we'll be able to, if they bunker down in the Red Garden.

"I'm surprised you aren't declaring yourself the hero who'll solve everything with your fists. Isn't that how things go in the Ebon Rivers?"

"Heroes are the dipshits who show up to hit things after people are already dead, and then swan off without fixing a damn thing," Ji Rong spat, and she was surprised at his venom. "You wanna fight?"

It's also really funny but also depressing that Ling Qi of all people forgot that how things go at the top aren't how they go when you are at the bottom.

Hanging out with ducal and count scions has skewed her in a lot more ways than just what the is normal cultivation progress

The lines about heroes is nice nid to how some cultivation stories treat their MC's. All bluster and flash they beat uo the guy and rarely once in blue moon try solving the actual problem.

Oh boy, if only. She killed the Sage Emperor. The freaking founder of the Empire, who is probably worshipped in the Celestial Peaks despite dying before he could ascend, and who every single emperor and empress is descended from.

I fear that if that secret ever gets out, the Empress might not be able to afford not to start a massive civil war to avenge her ancestor. In fact, it wouldn't surprise me if she and her father learned the truth a long time ago... and have spent a lot of resources ensuring it does not leak any further.

It's especially a sore topic with Rong since he's feom
Ebon Rivers and one of the local vassal family members possibly ate his sibling and nobody gave a shit much less some local Zheng swoop in to save the day.

Ling Qi doesn't know that but hooo man did she touch a nerve

"Ffffuck," Ji Rong said.

Ling Qi considered saying something pithy, and instead just lowered her head. "Yes."

Though he couldn't be aware of her own position, she couldn't help but be a little sympathetic, as one challenger of Sovereigns to another.

"So its not just in my head, and she knows it's some kind of bad news," Ji Rong growled. "Dammit."
Except Ji Rong can't even collaborate with his liege on the ol' regicide. Poor protagonist is doing his run on hard mode.

Little star, heaven star, spitting defiance and burning blood. Ling Qi let a little qi seep into her voice, to convey the depth of that feeling that simple words could not.

He looked like he'd been stabbed in the gut. His expression twisted.
We just did this to him, didn't we?
Ling Qi said. "..We aren't the same, I know that even with what little I can… I-" Her senses wavered.

A knife. A knife that was a man. Cruel Virtue, the blade to carve out the rot, that the body might live and breathe healthy again. Each cut revealed a new tumor, it ran so deep, deeper than the foundations themselves. RotrotrotrotrotrotrotROTROTROTROT-

"Feh, what obnoxious eyes you are cultivating. Have you been training her in secret?"

The awful, crushing despair that Ling Qi felt passed as swiftly as it had come.
Forcing an alien perspective on an unprepared mind is... unsettling. Something to keep in mind as we continue to develop these skills.

Though in this case, I expect much of his reaction comes from mundane imposter syndrome. I'm not sure Ji Rong feels particularly worthy of Liling's trust right now.

Ling Qi grimaced. "Sorry, I was trying to lighten the mood."

"And we're relying on you to talk down the barbs. Empire's fucked."
I appreciate the comradery displayed in this little rebuke, actually. Not only in terms of Ji Rong slotting so neatly into the role of "friend willing to call us incompetent to our faces", but also in the whole "relying on us" thing. Is there an opposite of a backhanded compliment? A... fronthanded insult, if you will?

Because this exchange feels like that, to me, with the implication that we're not great at international diplomacy but that everyone else would be even worse.

(not wrong, tbh)

The Sunflower Goddess didn't kill the Sage. That was her mother. The Sunflower Goddess is the Sage's daughter.

As far as I understand it, when the Sage forcibly married the head priestess of the Red Garden, she did some sort of sacrificial ritual that killed both herself and the Sage, and gave birth to some freaky super powerful spirit. Dunno about the exact mechanics...

I was thinking of making a post about how Communication so far seemed limited to reading others' Way, when Communication sort of has to be two-way. But it seems like this is what it looks like in the other direction.
