Threads Of Destiny(Eastern Fantasy, Sequel to Forge of Destiny)

Voted best in category in the Users' Choice awards.
I'm only seeing Cai and Xia fitting the dramatic beat this is at? Like, we've been bonding with Cai and helping her figure out her desires so a dramatic reach into a dream to take them out of a hollow desire works for them. Xia could work for like, a rapidly forged friendship type thing? I'm just not that into her character yet.

Gan is a work colleague we haven't seen in six months. Like, this would be cool as a second or third bonding moment in his return, but as the first it just has no real weight. Meng could be kind of interesting as look see to set up more for later, but that's kind of a gamble?

Hahaha, I am spitballing here but this is how I would play CRX's lotus machine.

1) Ling Qi enters the dream. The world is different and CRX is different - but not to the extent that it resembles a utopia. CRX is playing with her baby sister and Ling Qi realizes that the baby sister that CRX imagines looks strangely like her own which is, well, hm, weird.

Ling Qi tries to convince dream CRX to leave but she can't get a handle on this new CRX - her ideal self is too weirdly dissimilar from the real CRX for her to manipulate and she reacts badly to being told to 'wake up.'

...
Here's my expectation of CRX's lotus machine: step 1, then step 1 repeats until Liming goes apeshit.

Sounds like the Ice Plains people have deals with these ice spirits based on the power of the Iron-toothed Crone and the mentoring lineage of ice spirit to humans. Unfortunate that: it sounds like quick and easy passage to these lands would rely on a physical talisman and a practitioner of Zeqing's arts, which are not in vast supply. Not the greatest obstacle towards developing a trade relationship, but nonetheless not the best situation
Well, if the Cai really wants to create trade, they could send a few high level cultivators, something like violets or prisms, to clear the path. It will be costly and hard, but it can be done

...you don't think the last year getting crapped on might have changed his outlook on that? Like he told Ling Qi it did when they spoke?

The reason to pick Gan is faith that he has learned from that experience and will not fall for it twice. Once bitten twice shy.

We've barely even spoken to him since his failure and Shenhua's commentary about him was telling. Sorry, but this isn't the moment to discover if he's truly been able to change such a deeply rooted part of himself. We don't know him well enough and too many lives are on the line.

Liming going apeshit more likely failure condition of any of our choices, Cai likely survive if that happens but left broken.

I'm with you on this. Liming going apeshit will occur only if our choice fails. Everyone will probably survive, but CRX will be psychologically and spiritually wrecked after being turned into a puppet. Uggh.

I took that to mean Liming wouldn't stonewall us, but I'm not sure if the same applies to CRX's own psychology. Then again, "on any of the votes", so you're probably right that none of these are autofails.

Yrsillar is a fairly generous questmaster. The dude really isn't gonna give an autofail option. Plus we know from Black Sky Yearning herself that CRX has the best chance of breaking free. She was like "Even she has enough darkness to fail" which kinda implies that she is the most resilient of all. With a push from us, she will succeed.

[] Cai Renxiang
Having a strong bond with Renxiang and knowing her well makes her very obvious choice. I think that Renxiang wants to change the world and would not be satisfied with mere fantasies - I am quite sure Ling Qi would be able to convince her through their shared bond that she is living in a fantasy.

[] Meng Dan
I think that Meng Dan is a good choice because of shared understanding of dreams. I would expect that it would be easy to convince him to consider that what he is experiencing is a dream and then he should be able to perceive it as a dream - after that it should be possible to convince him that he cannot achieve his dreams in his dreams so he should wake up.

Ling Qi knew that people could break from their most fundamental urges.
This line is interesting to me, and I think it's the guidepost for each of the options.

[] Cai Renxiang
Cai Renxiang is the individual we have the highest Bond with, which means our Domain is most obviously in play. We've spent a fair amount of time with her, and we know some of her scars, both from her own words and the words of Lin Hai. On the other hand, she's borderline artificially difficult to engage with. Some of her underlying urges, like being pure, free from flaw, capable, etc like her mother is/wants/needs/demands she be could make it harder to reach out. That really just makes it more interesting though.

Maybe we could end up even convincing her to try reconnecting with Lin Hai!

[] Gan Guangli
In-character, we don't actually know him all that well. Out of character, we know that his backstory isn't... wholly different from Ling Qi's. It's been implied Gan Guangli's father was a soldier who got crippled, was not cared for by society, and made his misery his son's, before Gan Guangli left that life behind to be by Cai Renxiang's side. There's definite parallels with Ling Qi's experience, enough I think it's plausible for Ling Qi to pick up the threads on the fly and have the two of them resonate.

[] Meng Dan

This would be the last one I choose. We don't know a whole lot about him, and what we do know doesn't obviously jive with a common theme or experience with real narrative weight. Might just be my limited imagination in play and I'm missing something, though.

[] Xia Lin

Here's where the "people could break from their most fundamental urges" line catches my interest most. Xia Lin and Ling Qi's thing they have in common is their shared core motivations to advance and grow, never stopping. Now, the reason that's interesting is because that same fundamental urge is also core to Ling Qi's current, yes it still exists, Heart Demon. It really hasn't been consistently explored. This is potentially a really good narrative opportunity to give the Heart Demon some more meat, while exploring the contours of Ling Qi and Xia Lin's shared values.

This is partly why I dislike picking the Zeqing-like spirit.

We already know Hanyi is different from Zequing despite her efforts otherwise, but I expected Hanyi meeting the other spirits to give her inspiration on how to structure her growth.

Now all Hanyi sees is things similar to what Zeqing did, and I just don't like that curbing of Hanyi's difference with Zeqing.

tbh the only thing I see Hanyi coming out of this with is a sense of smug pride.

Black Skies Yearning is clearly the hick cousin of the family, she's very simplistic, doesn't have any culture or refinement, and is in the process of falling for what should be a very obvious trick.

This is just going to reinforce the ideas that a) Her momma was great, b) She's not gonna be like this pathetic excuse for a snow spirit.

Like, maybe as we get further south we'll see some more sophisticated spirits of her kind that Hanyi might find interesting, but BSY won't be it.

Moratorium over! :D

[X] Cai Renxiang

It just makes sense.

Edit: I wouldn't mind
[X] Xia Lin
either tbh.

I expected this would be a one-and-done vote rather than an arc, which reminded me of the Blessings of Fang/Hide in the Bloody Moon Dream - and you're not going to convince me that those weren't autofail trap options.

CRX having so little darkness is exactly why I have doubts about her, for the reasons I laid out earlier - fewer desires means a dream can fulfill them all with fewer flaws from the areas where those desires come into conflict. CRX has very few desires, which means the dream will have very few flaws for Ling Qi to exploit. (EDIT: You've convinced me it won't have none, but I still want to stay out of it.)

Gan Guangli's expression sobered. "I appreciate the concern Miss Ling. I will admit I was out of sorts in those first months, but I have found my motivation and my balance. I see now that I had become complacent, although events were stacked against me, I cannot allow myself to become discouraged. It is only our own selves which we may truly command."

"That doesn't sound like you," Ling Qi mused. "You were all about others before."

"That has not changed," Gan Guangli replied confidently. "However, my trials have taught me that Mastery of self must come first. Achieve excellence and others will follow you there. Achieve that excellence and inspire them as well? This is what makes loyalty unbreakable."
Ling Qi breaking Gan Guangli out of his desires will probably be related to what he told Ling Qi earlier in the expedition.
