Agreed, which is why HDW is better for our initial foray than ENM (the other art people were discussing modding). It's kind of hard for HDW to become worse.Does modding change the art even if we don't like the outcome?
Because if so, then worst case scenario for trying to mod an art is art becomming worse.
We pretty much only use Spring Breeze Canto out of this set, so we aren't risking much.Potency: Green 3

Spring Breeze Canto: D
Upkeep 3
Mastery of the melody has woven it into the background flow of the users Qi. While using any Music Art carries the musician's perception among her listeners out to Far Range, allowing her to clearly hear and see any one of them, regardless of distractions, so long as the songs echoes last. While the song lasts the users Social Perception is increased for the purpose of opposing Social Defense Arts. In combat Perception and Hit are increased instead. Once played, the canto lingers as an echo for several minutes with its full effect.
Summer's Day Rising: D
Duration: Long
This piece, embodying optimism and hope, speaks to the musician's bond with her listeners. Even the tenuous bond of casual acquaintance thrums with new vitality, bolstering allies significantly against spiritual attacks and deceptions. Those of stronger bond are bolstered still further, buoyed by their connection with the musician. For each ally affected the user receives a small boost to Combat Perception and Spiritual Avoid
Industrious Labors of Fall: C
Duration: Short
The third piece, which speaks of the labors made in preparation for the long winter, steadies the musicians audience and fills them with determination for the trials ahead. Bolsters the armor, health and Resist of listeners, up to a full rank at Bond 6.
Winds of Winter Yearning: C
Duration: Long
This piece is not played aloud for mortal ears, carried on the flows of the users qi, this soft and ephemeral melody is the music of winter winds rattling windows and tugging at roof tiles. No more than pleasant background to the listeners closest, but a song of exclusion to those outside. While active, the user and up to three allies in Immediate range are shielded from outside scrutiny, increasing their effective social defense against viewing arts.
I rather don't like that we've ignored Bian Ya in the expedition when we found she has a newborn trauma of the shishigui, I'd like to help her with the art modding as an excuse to call out and comfort her a bit as a relaxing time.
The one advanced insight we've gotten has come from a character-focused plot development, not from a random encounter, though. And we've got a lot of character-focused plot coming up. I really don't think a gacha encounter, even one set up by the Sect, is likely to provide the fuel for an advanced insight on the level of "helping our music mentor resolve her internal conflict and assume guardianship of her beloved daughter."My concern is that we need advanced insights which will almost certainly come from trials, said trials are fairly unlikely to come up on any given action, and our time is mostly accounted for.
It would really suck to be stuck at G5 and having to do a bunch of gacha before we continue to advance.
My concern is that we need advanced insights which will almost certainly come from trials
I really, really don't like the idea of fucking up our upgrade of FSS 'cause we assumed it'd be easy and safe to learn and implement in the very last minute.I also think its going to be kind of bizarre in a way I don't like if we go for making a successor to FSS before ever actually modifying an art. Logically they should have somewhat similar components or steps that need to be taken in the early stages.
Not really what I'm concerned about in this instance, its more a narrative storyline concern of "Hmm throwing Ling Qi into this in one go seems kind of stupid and I don't like it".I really, really don't like the idea of fucking up our upgrade of FSS 'cause we assumed it'd be easy and safe to learn and implement in the very last minute.
And I'm saying the translation of "throwing Ling Qi into this in one go seems kinda stupid" into mechanics might just be unpleasant for the people participating in this quest.its more a narrative storyline concern of "Hmm throwing Ling Qi into this in one go seems kind of stupid and I don't like it".
That's not actually a thing the mechanics account for. Mechanics for Successor creation have been laid out for us and its pretty much "expend effort, get art" with that expended effort being the point where errors come up and are dealt with. And I'm saying the translation of "throwing Ling Qi into this in one go seems kinda stupid" into mechanics might just be unpleasant for the people participating in this quest.
I don't think we're likely to face a cultivation-crippling disaster, but one of the consequences of setting ourselves a cultivation target so much higher than average is that meeting it means we can't afford the stumbles the average cultivator can just shrug off.
And one such consequence might be "you'll have to make a successor for a different Art before you can try again with this one."
Given how tight we've chosen to make our cultivation schedule...
Her little brother was engaged with Ji Rong's dragon, stabbing roots leaving scrapes and cuts across flying golden coils, but the moment that she gave the signal, he stopped, allowing the beam of liquid lightning that the young dragon spat to splash across his face to no effect.
When ya just cant hold it in anymore..

Event Roll 66
...
As Ling Qi trudged and climbed on, she began to get a suspicious prickling sensation on the back of her neck, her instincts telling her something was wrong. It took several more minutes to figure out just exactly what that was. She was being guided, there was an unnatural tint of qi to the wind that kicked up now and then, the violent buffeting forcing her to choose different paths.
Likewise, the ice slicks seemed to be growing in frequency, and not always in positions that made sense. As she continued, she was becoming increasingly sure that someone was messing with her. It was only confirmed when she caught the sound of someone laughing under the howling of the wind and caught a shadow out of the corner of her eye on a cliff above.
Ling Qi didn't waste any time responding appropriately.
A white flash flew from her sleeve, blending with the falling snow as it streaked toward the shadow on the cliff above her. Ling Qi's eyes narrowed as she summoned her flute to her hand, preparing to dance backward on the narrow mountain path and throw up her mist… only to come up short as the figure gave a high pitched yelp of surprise as the knife struck, throwing up a dazzling burst of icy blue white qi… right before it tumbled flailing from the ledge it had been on and landed headfirst in a snowbank.
"Owie, owie," the short, slight figure moaned further throwing her off at its childish voice. She didn't allow her guard to go down entirely though, even if she couldn't quite bring herself to attack aht she could now clearly see looked like a small child of eight or nine years.
I think Pickle's point is that regardless of how we got there, character development is what actually provided that insight and that more character development will provide more insights. While it was a random event that led to meeting Hanyi, everything that followed and the actual process that created that insight was character development.I'm pretty sure this was the source of that entire arc and (I think?) it was a random event from us deciding to climb the mountain instead of going through a tunnel.
More opportunities for such events seems like a good idea as most go nowhere and this took quite a while to resolve.
I'm not saying that we'll get an advanced insight from this explore action but I wouldn't be surprised if we got one from an arc that followed from one.
(I stripped out a bit before meeting Hanyi, that may have been the only random bit)
Yep. Meeting Hanyi was a random roll. Getting Zhengui was a random roll. Surviving the Dreaming Moon rave without being completely addled by it was a random roll, allowing us to meet Sixiang. But the stuff that has come out of that has not been predicated on randomness; we did not need a random event roll to trigger to deal with Zeqing, we just needed to keep showing up to lessons until the crisis hit.I think Pickle's point is that regardless of how we got there, character development is what actually provided that insight and that more character development will provide more insights. While it was a random event that led to meeting Hanyi, everything that followed and the actual process that created that insight was character development.
..........yes I'm totally sure a choice to modify a random art for experimentation is totally and utterly necessary for not screwing up making our FSS successor art and in no way assumes that a narrative character-defining moment is completely dependant on this single mechanical system addition /sI really, really don't like the idea of fucking up our upgrade of FSS 'cause we assumed it'd be easy and safe to learn and implement in the very last minute.
This is my reason for considering the explore plan, personally. But I think I still prefer the other by a slight margin.Quite honestly, one of the draws regarding exploration on this turn, for me at least, is the potential synergy between cultivating SSC and then going out there and exploring and seeking the hidden places of the Inner Sect. Making contact with spirits and engaging with them rather through exploration seems like it would pair wonderfully in the narrative with Ling Qi diving deeper into SSC, an art that rewards such actions and wants Ling Qi to go out there and do things.
Given that connection between the actions, I just think that exploration is the better choice.
