I don't think the books she was trying to get are the Poisons for dummies book. They are likely fairly advanced treatises on poison. The poison for dummies book is likely available in the outer sect. After all I think Li Suyin was starting to dabble in poison even before her official apprenticeship to Quingling.
Kind of shows the Ducal Advantage. Meizhen practices poisoncraft as basically a clan hobby, Qingling dedicated her work and cultivation to it. Meizhen's hobby has better backing than her dedication.
There is truth to this but one aspect of this is that the Bai are poison experts. Large parts of their clan are built around poisons. The Bao on the other hand are a mineral focused clan. Also Qinqling is not a favored scion of the Bao. So you have someone trying to do something different then their main clan's focus and someone whose clan specializes in it offering advice.
There is certainly a difference in resources available but I think the biggest problem for Qinqling is that she is trying to form a style with no, or at least very little, background work from her clan.
Pretty much
Bao Qingling's gaps in knowledge on the art of toxin craft is due to being largely self taught, she's working with what familiarity she already has with medicinal knowledge and combining it with whatever guidance she's able to acquire to bend it harmful purposes
Her spider connection isn't even of much help in this regard, according to WoG the spiders that Qingling and Suyin associate with produce more of a narcotic rather than the paralytic and flesh melting stuff the Bai are fond of
Discord said:
The spiders she and li suyin have bound are not particularly venomous and are inclined toward constructive behavior too. Their venom is more of a narcotic than the sort of stuff Meizhen uses
Poison making was already losing popularity, so there is a possibility that majority of available texts were either purged, or only those specifically against cultivators.
And my last assumption, is that Poison Making is even more niche due to how someone is able to just use "natural" poisons instead of specifically mixing for a specific potency or effect.
It doesn't matter if you just want to get rid of someone as then "excess" is one more thing trying to kill them. It also doesn't matter if you are working with metal or stone as those are resilient enough to resist the effect for quite a while.
This is coming up because Qingling is trying to make a poison-infused dress, something that has been out of fashion for a while even by cultivator standards.
Speaking of venoms as Meizhen's hobby, I wonder if she'll ever be interested in the uses of Zhengui's venom. While it is not likely as strong as Cui's venom (Which I recall being called the five organ dissolving venom, or something), I'm positive that there are some interesting chemical synergies that can be had by combining a venom which generates heat with poisons that have better reactions the more energy there is in the system.
Other than those lethal measures, Zhengui's diluted venom might make a unique hypothermia cure, heating the body from the inside out to restore heat to the body. Or, if that doesn't work, a very diluted version of Zhengui's venom might have some uses in alcoholic drinks or cooking.
Maybe a better way to state it is that Quingling needs Poison Craft for Dummies (Bai edition).
Because I refuse to believe "Intentionally make poisons" is anything but the most basic of basics of poison craft.
Also there is the very real possibility that the Bai intentionally and deliberately pushed poison craft towards a specific death (misinformation in the lower levels and the like).

Huh, thinking on it it's conceptually interesting compared to the Bai philosophy too, with how rather than being the 'incorrect' way to make poison with just adding excess to medicine or the 'correct' way in using exactingly specific destruction, Zhen's venom could be viewed as an expression of his nature of destruction, which of course in excess with Zhengui's overall nature would lead to regrowth.

It's these more advanced or finicky projects that such an approach to the making of poisons is not sufficient. And, If a methodology is sufficient for most projects, I find it likely that said methodology will be the basics of poison crafting. It's when you want to take your poison game and step it up that "sufficient for most projects" is not actually sufficient and new approaches must be explored and developed.

It's not that you "intentionally make poisons" it's how you "intentionally make poisons". The Bai process treats poison like a sword, a tool crafted to harm first and foremost. Quingling was treating poisons like a war scythe, modifying a peacetime tool into something it wasn't originally intended to be. In this world, reality is defined by the intent of the great spirits, and thus it's not surprising that things can remember the intent they were created with.
As far as I can tell, it depends on your cultivation basis:
-If you got there by making poison for hunting, then you're going to be based on extracting and weaponizing the properties of spiritual plants and animals, and your craft similarly be about bringing forth the innate qualities of the ingredients more than anything else.
-If you got there by transmutative alchemy, then its about refining and transforming the esoteric essences of materials, which also happen to be deadly to life. The lethality is more of an alternative application than anything else.
-If you got there by medicinal alchemy, then poison is all about the effects of medicine taken to extremes, while medicine is about bringing systems back in balance, or with cultivation drugs, introducing foreign energies without disruption. You could certainly achieve a serviceable poison using this method, hell, properly used this could produce the most subtle poisons of all the categories, something which slips through defenses and disguises itself as normal processes until the right time.
-If you're a Bai, poison is about better emulating your Sublime Ancestor. Poison is a weapon, it can be injected, sprayed, rained, consumed. It is to be endured by the strong to prove their strength, like their Founder did. For everyone else, poison is either a means to an end or a byproduct of their work. To the Bai, poison is a way of life.
I suspect that this is the basic insight: not all poisons are meant to kill. Which is important if you don't want the poison in your dress to try to kill said dress.
Well she might be getting ahead of herself. She was more confident in herself now, but there was confidence and then there was arrogance. Her first thought had been to use her little co-project with Wang Chao as a conversation opener, but on a second thought, involving Luo might be kind of insulting to Wang Chao. She was sure he knew about it through Alingge of course, but knowing and being invited to weigh in were different.
"Well, I'll trust you on that one. I didn't see a problem with the idea, but if you think he'll try to ruin the fun, best leave him out," Sixiang murmured in her head.
Ling Qi nodded to herself, casting one last glance at Luo. He stood off to one side, chatting pleasantly with a handful of barons and viscounts she recognized from his party. He seemed fine, but there was still a hint of tension in the air. She mentally appended her to do list, once the expedition was over, she would ask Bao Qian about it.
For now, she should really see to Hanyi, something about the way Hanyi was grinning at Xuan Shi made her nervous.
"What's the worst she could do?" Sixiang asked innocently.
Ling Qi's eyebrow twitched. She picked up her pace even further. Why did Xuan Shi's speaking screen have to be so good!?
***
"Right? Big Sis is just the best, but she won't admit it, so you should…" Hanyi's voice suddenly snapped into focus as Ling Qi stepped into range.
"Hello again," Ling Qi said cheerfully, cutting her off without apology. "I hope my little sister hasn't been troubling you."
Hanyi shot her a look and huffed defiantly, crossing her arms. "Big Sis, I was being good! I didn't do anything you said not to."
Ling Qi gave her a suspicious look. Hanyi grinned. Xuan Shi looked uncomfortable.
"Thy sibling offered no offense. Do not be harsh," Xuan Shi said hastily. Well, hastily for him anyway.
"Of course," Ling Qi said, giving hanyi an even look. "What were you discussing then?"
"I was just talking about how good you are at composing Sis, and all the help you've been giving me," Hanyi said sweetly.
Partial lie, her instincts told her. Considering Hanyi…
"She was totally trying to set you up for a date. Or convince Hat Boy to ask anyway," Sixiang stated bluntly in her thoughts.
Ling Qi sighed. That was absolutely what she was doing. Hanyi wasn't malicious toward her after all. She was just trying to 'help'. Thankfully, Xuan Shi did not seem to have taken offense. "There is no need to praise me too much, Hanyi, you will make people think I have a swollen head," she chided gently.
Hanyi looked defiant but nodded, mumbling under her breath. "Big Sis should be less humble."
Ling Qi chose to ignore that and smiled at Xuan Shi. "Thank you for being patient with Hanyi."
He waved his hand dismissively. "Miss Ling's praise is welcome, but unneeded. This one would instead offer thanks for the superb performance."
"It was hardly something so praiseworthy," Ling Qi demurred. "And my name is fine, you know."
"...As you say," he said, tugging his hat low. "How fares thine younger brother?"
"He is growing quite steadily. He reached the Appraisal stage just a short time ago," Ling Qi replied cheerfully. She was always happy for an opportunity to praise Zhengui.
"Hmph, if anyone has a swollen head it's Zhen," Hanyi grumbled, crossing her arms petulantly. She supposed they must have had a little spat recently. She did not let herself worry about it. They were friends and squabbled frequently, their enmity never lasted for more than a day or two.
"Like you didn't wring your hands over it the first time you noticed," Sixiang huffed.
Ling Qi ignored the muse's prodding.
"A good omen for growth to come," Xuan Shi replied, oblivious to her internal byplay. "This one has noticed a certain change in thee as well. A successful assimilation?"
Ling Qi took a moment to think about his words. Xuan Shi's speech had become much more comprehensible since last year. She wondered if he was simply becoming more familiar with southern dialects. "I did succeed in integrating my domain weapon recently. Lady Cai was most helpful with her instruction. I suppose, given your cultivation, you must have as well."
He nodded amiably. "This one's own efforts were somewhat fraught, but success came in the end."
"You know I'm not sure I've ever seen your domain weapon," Ling Qi said with a frown. She couldn't quite recall. It would be rude to ask him to bring it out here though. "Well, I suppose I will have the opportunity soon. Would you mind telling me about your more recent projects, since we will be fighting together?"
"Certainly," Xuan Shi looked pleased. She had a feeling he would enjoy talking about his work, and it would be tactically helpful. She was a little amused at the way Hanyi subtly rolled her eyes. Silly little sister, it wasn't so easy to make things awkward any more!

Ling Qi stood by Cai renxiang's side as the last of the guests descended the hill and left their site. The rest of the party had gone by quickly. Xuan Shi's projects were interesting, it seemed that his focus was on expanding his end of year project from personal defense to rapid deployment fortifications. A great deal of his words had gone a bit over her head, she had not really kept up with her formation studies. However the talk of self reinforcing and resonating defences certainly sounded powerful. She would feel a lot better about scouting ahead knowing that she had such a sturdy foundation.
She had probably overstepped herself in inviting him to take a look at her home defenses though. He had been quite eager actually!
...Now Ling Qi just had to explain to her Mother that a member of a ducal family was coming by and prevent her from hyperventilating. A concern for after the expedition, certainly.
"You performed well," Cai Renxiang said, disturbing her thoughts. "I was somewhat ambivalent about adding your spirit to the performance. It turned out well however. A worthy expense"
Ling Qi could feel Hanyi smugging at her from inside of her dantian. She would need to puncture that ego a little come training.
"It was a little amusing," Ling Qi replied. "I expected some trouble with the more Peak inclined nobility, but the consensus seemed to be that I was skilled for taming such a notoriously unruly spirit."
Hanyi blew a silent rasberry at her.
"Ling Qi's not wrong, who are you and what did you do with my bratty Hanyi?" Sixiang chuckled.
"I can be a lady too!" Hanyi complained.
Ling Qi struggled to keep a straight face as her spirit's bickered. Cai Renxiang looked at her out of the corner of her eye, and Ling Qi flushed a little. She was pretty sure that Cai Renxiang knew what was happening. "Well it wasn't all good. Some people still thought having her walk around on her own was boorish."
"You cannot please everyone with every action," Cai Renxiang replied. "Nonetheless I am satisfied with your efforts."
"Thank you," Ling Qi replied. "Although, might I ask what matter brought Sun Liling here?"
Cai Renxiang lips quirked down in a frown. "She was interested in a truce."
Ling Qi raised her eyebrows. "I didn't know we were still at war with her."
"The Princess has focused her competitiveness upon myself and Bai Meizhen," her liege replied. "Regardless, it seems that Ji Rong has also been selected for your expedition, and she wished to offer assurances that there would be no ill will during that mission… and request the same."
Ling Qi blinked, then blinked again. "He will… but… why?" She asked, losing composure and turning to face Cai Renxiang.
"His arts proved unusually effective against the beasts of the deep," Cai Renxiang replied calmly. "The Sect is trusting the members to act professionally."
That was certainly fine for her, and for Xuan Shi. Could Ji Rong really be trusted to do the same? She rubbed her forehead in consternation. "...I have no personal grudge."
"Which is what I told the princess. I trust your discipline regardless," Cai Renxiang said, stepping out of the pavillion. "Come, I wish to have one final spar before you set about your last stretch of cultivation."
"Yes Lady Cai," Ling Qi replied immediately, falling in behind her. Ugh, she really didn't know how to feel about working with Ji Rong.

Over the course of the next few days, Ling Qi made her final preparations, cultivating the next level of the Roaming Moon's Eye technique. Divination had been a useful tool before, and developing it further would only make it more so.
When she wasn't cultivating, she was working with Hanyi and Zhengui, spending just a little more time familiarizing herself with their fighting styles.

The user's eyes gleam briefly with a silver sheen as they study the object of their curiosity. The users perception increases greatly for up to two tests in a single scene, allowing them to discern many details that they might otherwise miss.
Seeking Moon's Eyes: C
Duration: Persistent
Conjures five reflective silver wisps the size of a coin. Expressions of the Diviner's curiosity, these wisps seek their parents interest eagerly. The wisps ignore wholly physical obstacles but cannot travel further than Very Far distance from their creator. The creator may see from the wisp's position as if they stood there themselves, though only in one direction at a time. This greatly increases their combat perception in the areas within which this sight overlaps.

Watchful Moon Analysis: C
Duration: Immediate
Used in tandem with an damaging art, allows the users thoughts to far outspeed their limbs, greatly slowing their perception of the world, and allowing the user to pick out minute details that might otherwise be missed in the flows of an enemy or obstacles qi, and adjust the course of their blow. Through this the user ignores the effects of a single defensive technique of C rank or lower, or if none are active, penalizes the targets armor or avoid at the users discretion.
Initiate's Viewing Pool: B
[Non-Combat]
Requiring a surface of calm water or a mirror at least two handspans wide, the user concentrates on a familiar person or place within twelve kilometers of their current position. The user is able to view the person or location in clear detail with both sight and hearing with perception equivalent to their own base Perception. This viewing may be opposed by arts or talismans of various types, in which case the users combat perception is used to determine success. With sufficient surfaces, the use may view up to three targets with a single use of this technique. The user may attempt to look upon an unfamiliar location or person(such as one merely described or seen in passing to the user), however the user receives two ranks down on their Perception when doing this, and only receives visual information even on success. Targets are not considered familiar until seen in person.

Illustrious Phantasmal Festival: B
Duration: Persistent
The foundational technique from which all others in the art arise. The user gathers their qi and the memories of their night of revelry and expels them through every available channel in a rush of power and gleaming many colored mist. Within Close range centered on the user, ghostly dancers ever shifting in form coalesce from the midst in a riot of color, laughter, music and movement.
The festival counts as an opponent for the purposes of determining multiattacker bonuses. The user is the master of the revel, the host and the creator in one. The revel may move with them or remain still at their volition. The user may freely move to any point within the confines of the revel instantly and without crossing the intervening distance, and is immune to any physical obstacle or barrier or constraint of a rank lower than A(Adjusted for potency). To move the revel, the user must move normally, or with another technique. While the revel is active the users Physical Avoid and Spiritual Avoid is increased by one half rank, this bonus also applies to up to Eight allies within the revel. Said allies receive a half rank increase to speed within the confines of the revel.
--Lunatic Whirl: B
Duration: Persistent
Activates automatically at no additional cost when Illustrious Phantasmal Festival is activated. The ghostly dancers gather around an intruder in the festival, laughing, singing and demanding a dance, forcing them to join the revelry. The dancers seize their arms and hands, dragging them through the chaotic revelry. Though the dancers will do no harm to their captive, the frenetic pace of the revelry is highly draining, and victim finds their qi dribbling away(D rank qi drain), siphoned to the user while the sights and sounds of the revel cloud their minds and steal the strength from their limbs. So long as their hands lie in the grasp of the dancers, they will also find the meridians in their arms blocked and unusable. Each usage of Lunatic Whirl may target up to 5 targets. The user may target a maximum of fifteen enemies of lower realm or five of equal realm (mixed groups are counted at a 3:1 ratio).
Joyous Toast: C
Duration: Immediate
Usable only while Illustrious Phantasmal Festival is active. The guests of the festival raise their voices and cups and stamp their feet in joy, roaring encouragement for the user and their allies and jeering at their foes. The next music, dance or art based technique used by those affected is treated as if it is one rank higher for determining effects. If Joyous Toast is dispelled, the effect lingers regardless granting a half rank increase(Effect nulled by Dispels of Rank A or higher)
Ephemeral Dreamlit Dancer: C
Duration: Short
Having begun to understand the nature of the dreams, the user flits from place to place, shrouded in the phantoms of paths not taken. While active the users speed is increased significantly. Techniques which would still hit the user have a 60% chance to simply fail (-15% for each rank of Combat Perception above the user's derived stealth), shattering instead some of the dreamlike phantom images the user is shrouded in. Each use of this technique generates four 'charges' which do not stack with additional uses. Each charge provides a small stacking boost to Physical Avoid and Speed.
If used while Illustrious Phantasmal Festival is active, the user may use this technique to pull others into the shallows of Dream. When the revel next relocates in material space, up to five targets in addition to the user move with it. Targets position within the space of the revel is unchanged, this movement ignores terrain and intervening space. Unwilling targets may resist this effect, but are disoriented and receive a penalty to Avoid and Perception until their next action. The technique must be activated again each time the user wishes to move other targets. Doing this in quick succession is taxing upon a user of the third realm, and so the techniques cost increases by one rank after the second use of this variant, and one additional rank after the fourth.
Should be interesting to fight on the same side as Ji Rong. I wonder if he is still all lightening and heaven and pure Punch you in the face or if he has switched things up?

Forget the Turtle boi~ memes, Xuan Shi's work here sounds like something fun for Cultivator nerd Ling Qi!
Of course, I maintain that I want to chase the Turtle boi~
