Threads Of Destiny(Eastern Fantasy, Sequel to Forge of Destiny)

Yan Renshu would like a word. As would the girl Xiulan blinded in the exam when the Elder's formations didn't extract her in time.

And you can't tell me the girl who gouged out Suyin's eye for shits and giggles was that politically connected.

Do the sect Elders have something against eyes?

This is a feature, not a bug.

The Sect is designed for nobility, to whom those injuries are an inconvenience.

If you don't have the resources to heal the same way, you better know your place or learn to back it up.

It teaches conformity and promotes excellence, as intended.

Reminder that the rules of the Sect are usually stricter than what we've seen, Shenhua leaned on them to relax the rules in recent years to deliberately create a more chaotic environment to test her daughter
She's able to do that because she's their primary benefactor
"This is all increasingly farcical," Sima Jiao said irritably. Strands of shadow curled around his fingers as they drummed on the polished surface of the meeting table. "Are we truly to allow matters in the Outer Sect to continue like this?"

Across from him, Hua Su had the good form to grimace briefly. Though there was no sign of stress on the seemingly middle-aged woman's face, nor a single hair out of place in her severe bun, Sima Jiao could see the little burrs in the flow of her qi: irritation, unhappiness, dissatisfaction. "I must concur. While I have received a larger than usual crop of disciples interested in the medical arts, the reasoning is somewhat... "

"Has it really gotten so bad?"
"Brother Jiao is correct," Shi Ying said quietly, her hands clasped in front of her face. Her tiny, plump, and grandmotherly form was at odds with the feeling of looming weight that hung around her. Jiao was, of course, unaffected, but the poor lad in the corner taking minutes looked about ready to soil his robes. "The Outer Sect is a proving ground, meant to test for entry, but this… 'war' is excessive. The degree to which certain disciples are being allowed to bend the rules is excessive."

"It is beginning to damage our reputation," Hua Su said, looking to the head of the table. "There are those saying that the Argent Sect has grown lax and undisciplined."

Sima Jiao felt his lip curl as he turned to look as well. Unlike the others, he did not lower his head before Yuan He.
"I am aware of the troubles regarding the new rules," Yuan He said sternly. "However, until this year's end, they remain necessary."

Funding The words he would speak regarding the benign neglect of the Southern Sects would likely earn him an Imperial censure, Sima Jiao thought sourly. To see His Highness' plans, so carefully crafted, already beginning to show wear around the edges…

But Emperor An had ascended, and now, it was the Empress' will. Not for the first time, Jiao felt a grinding pain in his spirit like the broken edges of a rib shifting.

"Duchess Cai's aid has been invaluable in maintaining our programs and core cultivation," Hua Su began carefully. "But surely, this chaos is not her intent."

"Oh, I do not know about that," Zhuge Gen mused. "We are seeing an unusually large group of prospective third realms emerging."

"And how many careers have been quashed and Ways bent?" Shi Ying asked darkly. "That Yan child, he had potential before we allowed his Path to devolve as it has. And he is only a prominent example among others."

"Let us not be blind here. In a year where a scion of the Bai, the child of the Tyrant of Radiance, and the Butcher King's great-granddaughter were present, there was never going to be a shortage of third realms," Sima Jiao scoffed. "And that is not even getting into the convergence of other prestigious families."

"Not many people dare speak the name the Hui gave to our Lady Duchess anymore," Zhuge Gen said with a nervous chuckle. "Aren't you being a little irreverent, Senior Brother Jiao?"

"Only because most people are cowards." Sima Jiao flicked his sleeve dismissively at the younger man. "The woman never banned it. Indeed, she finds it quite amusing as far as I can tell."

"Enough," Yuan He said, his voice booming with an undercurrent of finality. "Your concerns have been heard, but the matter is closed. Unless you can convince all of your colleagues to halve their cultivation salaries…?"

And that was the rub. The Argent Sect had a frankly absurd concentration of power. Two active Seventh realms - himself and the Sect Head - more than ten sixth realms, and many more of the fifth. Supporting such cultivation was beyond the means of any polity smaller than a county. That was not even considering the standing military the Sect maintained. The lands gifted to the Great Sects were rich - but not that rich.

Yuan He regarded them all in silence until one by one, the others lowered their heads. "We will resume the more stringent rule structure in the following year, as per the agreement with the Duchess. Turn your attention to the matter at hand."

Minor quibble, Meizhen is far, far, far behind.
Suzhen is the front runner, then theres a large number of Violets and Prisms.
Meizhen is only relevant because she's Suzhen's favorite kid and also publicly beat the ass of a Sun.
Oh. By that I meant Heir of Suzhen once Suzhen presumably continues her ascension to the seat

Considering the lengths of time for normal cultivation and the fact that Diao Linqin was formerly a Sect Elder, it amuses me more than a little to think that maybe she taught Cai Shenhua when she was there. You know, just to make that whole thing even more scandalous.

(Though I'm sure it was less "hot for teacher" and more "oh, hey, wasn't she an elder all those years ago? it'd be funny to seduce her" and then she did.)

Wow, I have zero recollection of the update you quoted. And it's super elucidating.

Is this from FoD or a a ToD post?

Huh, so Ogodei wasn't the barbarian equivalent of White, if the Sect Head stopped him while being Prism. Curious how he stomped the province, from the sounds of it he was very clever, besides being strong.

If memory serves, Ogodei was the first and only southern barbarian to ever reach Prism (that anyone knows of at least).

That strength plus most of the leading clans at the time (the ruling Hui and the still powerful Chu as a couple of examples) being unprepared and unable to get their acts together let him pretty much stomp the southern half of the province until Yuan He and his friends teamed up to take him down (and Ogodei still managed to take most of them down with him before dying).

Course, I'm probably missing or misremembering some details there, so take this with a grain of salt.

Meizhen's father is the spymaster and he's totally turning the organization over to Meizhen once she's ready. Not really irrelevant.

Thanks.

Sect head was violet when he killed Ogodei, though it was a team effort that left most of the team dead.

Ogodei was exceptional, but there is no implication he was the first prism ever at all. It's just quest readers trying to make the whole thing 'special' by hyping up aspects about him that don't need to be hyped.

Meizhen's father is Suzhen's spymaster. There are plenty of other spymasters in other frontrunners of the clan.

It's worth noting that Meizhen's mother was the frontrunner before her death. So Meizhen is set to inherit the spy network of the Bai's previous foremost hope of reaching White, something they wouldn't waste if they didn't think she could take her mothers place. She hasn't distinguished herself enough to be "frontrunner" yet but her chances of becoming one are comparable to those of Cai Renxiang and baby Cai Tienli's.

I wonder if this bit:
But Emperor An had ascended, and now, it was the Empress' will. Not for the first time, Jiao felt a grinding pain in his spirit like the broken edges of a rib shifting.
means that Jiao invested part of his Way into personal loyalty to Emperor An and a different part into loyalty to the throne, thus creating a Heart Demon when An ascended and the two were no longer the same thing. And that led to his retirement as staying near the Empress was literally injuring him.

It even makes sense that you'd want that kind of soul-deep loyalty for the Ministry of Integrity

Meilin was never the front runner. She wasn't bad, but she was a significantly weaker than Suzhen and helping her.

To clear up confusion:
Suzhen is set to become White, but will need a strong "Heir" or interim leader that she can trust to protect her and the White Bai holdings while she personally ascends to White. This must be, for Bai pride purposes, a White Bai clan member. Someone with sympathy towards reforms as well as truly believing in the spirit of the reforms (care and respect for the members of the other castes and the commons). Probably someone with the typical White Bai hardpoint defense as well as the social spymastering required to keep things smooth and un-rotted during the absence.

Meizhen has repeatedly been pointed out as one of the kindest Bai that exist. Her father is keeping the White Bai Spyring maintained and ready for Meizhen when she comes of age for it. Suzhen is giving personal attention to her. I think she's in a good spot

Was two paragraphs into some overly verbose commentary on this, the. realized I already did that a thousand pages ago, lol.

Imagine for a moment that instead of Meizhen being our roommate and Renxiang our first liege, they're fused into a Super Roomate, Reizhen. (Also everyone's gender swapped because I'm not imagining Renxiang in Meizhen's clothes and the reverse is weirder)

Mu Reizhen is passionate, supportive, and driven. He sees the worth in us when we still think that we're a coward who leaves his friends behind and steals a kind man's blanket. When we've just assumed our whole lives that the Lord in the tower is just an upscaled version of the guard who would beat us half or more to death if took a step out of line, Reizhen is just and evenhanded.

We follow Reizhen for centuries, shaping ourselves to complement him.

When Reizhen takes the throne, he needs someone he can trust, and we're there.

We shape ourselves again, into the Emperor's Shadow. The Emperor's Thousand Blades. The Emperor's Ten Thousand Eyes.

And then one day, Reizhen tells us that he's ready to move on.

The World is not fair. The World is not just. He will do his best to make it so, and bring about Inexorable Justice.

He asks us to watch over his descendents, until we're ready to join him. We wish him well.

All it would take is one mistake too many, one selfish act to stand in contrast to Reizhen and we would realize.

We're not the Emperor's Shadow.

We're Reizhen's Shadow, but Reizhen is gone.

And the Empress is not Reizhen.

Meizhen is only half Bai though. There is no way the other members of the clan would accept someone only half Bai being an heir.

Duchess Cai Shenhua: Yes, her radiant grace once attended these storied mountains as a disciple, spending her early years enjoying our educational opportunities before returning home in the wake of the Thousand Wing incursion.

Prime Minister Diao Linqin: The glorious matriarch of the Diao clan arose here as well, first as disciple and then as Elder, before returning to take position in the renowned Diao clan
Going by the timings...the relationship would seem a little questionable to anyone who knows of the two wouldn't it?
To be abused by those with greater power?
Doesn't Imperial society try to stress the opposite of that? With rich merchants having an easier time getting off charges then cultivators.
No, it stresses that:
-Cultivators protect mortals.
-Cultivators live and die based on their strength.

A cultivator punching down and maiming lesser cultivators is considered crass and wasteful, but one of the most important lessons to teach lesser cultivators is that while they're hot shit compared to their origins, they can and will be smacked down if they cross their greaters.

None of the crippling injuries were incurable for cultivators, Suyin's eye could have been healed except her pride insisted that she do it herself, Renshu was disfigured but again, its nothing that would impair his function.

Its the very same lesson that had Chu Song made an abject lesson of, while Shen Hu was granted indirect Sect assistance after he was sabotaged. the lesson is that if you won't kneel you need to learn to get out of the way or be knelt.

Meizhen is literally a hundred years too early to be Suzhen's heir.

She's currently literally just Suzhen's favorite kid. Once she hits Cyan being groomed for more might be a thing, but Meizhen was going to use her boon for the tournament to be placed in Cai's Court, which is contraindicated for aspirations of status within the Bai. She's tempermentally ill suited to the Bai courtly intrigue, she's great at playing it relative to everyone else out of self defense, but back home she's the Shut In Cultivating Cousin.
Meizhen's father is the spymaster and he's totally turning the organization over to Meizhen once she's ready. Not really irrelevant.
Not known to be relevant then

Well, not just him, there were a few others who did i.e. Elder Heng (the old guy who was in charge of our lectures at the beginning of this quest till he started dying of old age, Elder Jiao had to replace him)

And really, I've assumed Ogodei only managed to rampage as much as he did partly due to to the timing of his invasion, but probably mainpy due to the weirdly dismissive nature barbarians seem to be treated with.

Under estimated response (political intent or ortherwise) and probable disbelief of the actual strength of Ogodei most likely contributed to the damage he was able to inflict.
