Kesar and the Aftermath
Kesar and the Aftermath
As Kesar walked through the halls of his flagship, he saw most of his sons had their own weapons and armor marked similarly to his own. Etched with the names of those fallen, and those Lost. Many had not yet finished placing all the names of the fallen as yet. There were so, so, many. It'd taken him days to finish all of them himself, and he had tools prepared specifically for the task. Still seeing his Legion honoring those that had made the ultimate sacrifice in battle, and continuing on with their work, shouldering the burden of the past to prepare the way for the future eased some of the pain in his heart.

Eventually his wanderings took him to the Bridge of the ship, where he had expected to see Oriacarius, and yet he wasn't there. "Captain of the Watch Trsymal, where is First Captain Oriacarius?" He asked the relatively junior Captain currently handling the Bridge while they traveled through the warp.

"He has been in the Champions Armory nearly since we were underway my Lord, he wished to partake in the new Tradition of Remembrance." Trysmal replied, with a barely repressed stutter at speaking directly to his gene-father. Obviously nervous at the attention, though determined to do his utmost through the tension.

Kesar smiled with a touch of melancholy at him, "Ah, thank you Trysmal. Carry on." So saying he left the bridge, heading towards the Champions Armory. Not typically where Oriacarius would go for maintenance rights for his own equipment, but the Champions Armory had special tools for engraving in response to valorous deeds, now being used to remember the deeds of others. A good use of the tools, if anything was.

It did not take long for Kesar to make his way to the Champions Armory. Once there however, he did not interrupt Oriacarius, who seemed highly intent upon his task, instead he merely counted each of the names already etched into his wargear, and touching each of those names on his own. At a Primarch's speed it did not take him long to finish, and upon doing so he realized that there were few names left to be etched. Each name took far longer than the others he had seen, Oriacarius apparently put as much forethought into every stroke of the etching tool as he did to his battle plans. Looking around the Armory, Kesar realized that most of the workbenches were full of his sons writing their own list of names into their weapons and armor. All at difference paces, many with individual names in different locations. Though all seemingly within a few specific sets of locations, likely at the direction of the Tech-Priests in charge of maintaining the Legions gear.

Kesar takes this time to look over his sons work, showing his appreciation of their choices, and commiserating with them regarding all the brothers they have lost. All quietly, not wanting to interrupt or distract the others as they work. Still with over 60,000 names, many of his Sons were finishing the work in sets between other important tasks. Eventually, Oriacarius finished, and Kesar headed over to him, placing a hand on his shoulder, "Oriacarius, now that you've finished, I'd like to discuss some things with you. Follow me please."

Oriacarius looks up at Kesar, a sad look on his face, then back to his wargear, covered in tens of thousands of names of the fallen. "Of course my Lord," he responds somberly, putting his armor back on and re-equipping his weapons.

Together they head out of the Champions Armory, and to Kesar's private quarters. He lets the First Captain in, closes the door behind them, and then hugs his first captain tight. Something Oriacarius responds to after a moment of shock. After a long moment, Kesar releases him and steps away. "We, are going to discuss how to keep another day like this one from ever happening again." Kesar says to him, a look of grim resolve in his eyes. "We both did the best we could, and yet it still lost us more than half our legion on this singular station. We need to find better ways for the Legion to operate in combat without my presence, I will not always be able to be there where the fighting is hardest, and my sons must learn to handle these threats on their own. We both must learn all we can from this battle, it is far from likely this is the last Man of Iron we will ever face. So tell me Oriacarius, everything you recall from entering the system it held, all the way through until the entire station was cleared."

"Of course, father." Oriacarius begins explaining how they entered the system from the warp, and began checking sensor readings to determine any threats. The decision making progress that led to 45,000 battle brothers entering the massive station, the reasoning behind every action, every decision, the details missed in the battle that led to the enemy's surprise attacks succeeding, and those caught that led to them failing. Every moment of the battle picked apart in detail, to be debated with the knowledge of hind-sight, and to be viewed with a mind to the future and how to react to similar instances. From the realization that the enemy was reclaiming and reusing the wrecks of previous machines and what was done to mitigate such things, to how to be better equipped to mitigate that technique in future. A basic plan was forming in Kesar's mind, for the next time they fought such a terrible foe. Preparations to make, equipment to be commissioned. He'd still have to talk to others, learn all he could from as many of his Sons as were there in the fighting. He was determined to never let a similar catastrophe effect his legion again, not when there was any possible way to mitigate it. Even a single percent more effective tactics would mean hundreds more of his sons alive, and he would see to it that next time, those tactics, those strategies were in place.

The Adeptus Mechanicus and the Rite of Remembrance
The Adeptus Mechanicus and the Rite of Remembrance
As Kesar talked with Oriacarius, other far less outwardly emotional people were having their own discussions about the aftermath of the fighting in Senas. Specifically regarding the Legions new practice of etching the names of their dead into their wargear. Something that the Tech-Priests were initially ambivalent towards, so long as the Legions showed proper respect and deference to the Machine Spirits. And yet, in case after case, after the Legionary had completed their ritual, the Machine Spirits responded, never by an amount noticeable even by the super-human but still flesh senses of an Astartes, yet noticeable all the same to the incredible perceptions of the Machine. Just a few fractions of a percent improvement in performance, from muzzle velocity of the Volkite weaponry, to the reaction speeds of the servo-motors in their power armor. In every case, in every test, miniscule differences appeared between pre-ritual, and post-ritual tests. None of this was spread beyond the Adeptus of course, for none knew why this would have such a consistent effect on the Machine Spirits.

Could it be as simple as the Machine Spirits desire to ensure their own users did not fall? Or the rage at so many of mankinds finest having fallen? Was it an ancient Rite of the Machine that they had somehow forgotten, and now by chance, found again? If so, why did the Rite not seem to work if any but an Astartes from the Legion used those weapons? Why would the Machine Spirit, enraged or energized by the Rite of Remembrance, perform only so well when an Astartes used it, and not when a Priest of the Omnissiah tested it? In secret, some of the lesser Enginseers were tasked with doing their own Rite of Remembrance with the same names, and the same rules as were given to the Astartes, and yet upon completion, they showed no effect. Except again, when used by a member of the Legion. It was maddening! It was strange! It was knowledge they did not have before!

But what was to be done about it? Was it something that the Machine Spirits of the Legion responded to purely because of some quirk of the Legion they were picking up on that even the Priests of the Omnissiah missed? How could that be? And some among the Adeptus Mechanicus wondered at the idea of using the Rite of Remembrance on larger engines. What effect would it have on more powerful Machine Spirits, like that of a Land Raider, or even of a ship? Eventually it was decided among the Magos of the fleet, to subtly encourage the Legion if any showed an inclination to perform the Rite on some of their vehicles, though for now, not to encourage such for the ships themselves. The Machine Spirits of a Warp Ship were mighty and easily angered, best not to risk it with such little data regarding the Rite.

It did not take long before a Thunderhawk crew decided they wanted to perform the Rite of Remembrance on their craft. Something they wisely questioned their assigned Enginseer about first. Thankfully the decision had been made and spread out to those in positions to make these decisions quickly. So when Enginseer Jallop was asked about the best places to etch the names into the armor of the Thunderhawk, he was able to give answers approved by a senior Magos immediately. There were a few specific places the Magos thought best to have the names placed. Locations that the Machine Spirit would be most amenable to, locations with the thickest armor, as well certain more delicate locations that improved attention towards might lead to the craft's Machine Spirit feeling well cared for. Or simply to remind the pilot of the location and its importance to to the function of the craft. They also asked about the best locations for the names of the Lost of the legion, to be etched into the weapons. Here again the Magos had plans in place. Along the ammo-feeder for improved efficiency and a decrease in the chances of jams, across the tops of targeting cogitators to bring further insight, other varied possibilities. For a craft of this size, there were not enough names to fill every possible location, and so the Magos had instructed Jallop to suggest a specific pattern for the craft under his watch, while other Enginseers would have their own patterns, and the Adeptus would learn more about this Rite from how the different locations effected their charges.

After the crew completed their Rite, the names of their Fallen and Lost brothers adorning the Thunderhawk in a variety of locations, they performed the Rite of Crew Maintenance upon it, the basic ritual taught to all Thunderhawk crew to show their respect and admiration for the Machine Spirit. Once finished they left, for their own things and Enginseer Jallop descended upon that craft and began far more intense Rites of Bay Maintenance. While also alerting his Magos superior of the completion of the Rite of Remembrance. It did not take long for the Magos to join him, and together they worked to verify the state of the Machine Spirit, and like the wargear before it, the Machine Spirit of the Thunderhawk seemed just that slightest bit more responsive, going through the Ritual of On with milliseconds less time. Nothing that would be immediately obvious to the uninitiated but clearly present to those who were. It seemed the higher Magos were accurate in their assessment as to the importance of locations too. Those areas directly marked had slightly higher increases than the base amount present across the craft as a whole. Upon completing all the tests he was aware of Jollop stood back and let the Magos continue with his far more advanced work and wondered at what this could mean, and what effect these Rites of Remembrance could have in the future.

[X] Lead the charge slow and steady securing a bulkhead and slowly advancing to not risk as many lives
-[X] Employ technomancy

During the strategy session, Kesar decided that it was time for him to lead his sons into battle. While they had done an excellent job, his presence would make the mission far easier. For the rest of the plan, it was quickly agreed to be a slow but steady advance. Secure the perimeter before slowly pushing in to preserve life. The Thousand Sons would also be put to use as their technomancy would come in handy here. Hopefully, the Wardens would finally purge the daemonic infestation.

With that, the Legion was organized into groups and individual companies received their orders. Then Kesar spoke into the vox. "Wardens, we are at the end. 60,000 of my sons and your brothers have died on this station. That stops. The thrice-damned daemon has cowered in the foundry as it sends hordes of daemonic Men of Iron to slow our advance. We pushed forward. Despite being outnumbered a hundred to one, we pushed. Now, we push one last time. For the Sovereign."

"FOR THE SOVEREIGN!" The Eternal Wardens cheered as the end of the battle was in sight. There gene-father was leading the charge, and now the final conflict on Station Gehenna began. With a roar, the Wardens charged forward towards the bulkheads that led to the foundry. And in front, stood Kesar. Clad in his Remembrance Armor and wielding the Sword of the Lost, he charged at the bulkhead that withstood heavy weapons fire and Astartes terminators. It did not even slow him as he tore through it. The Wardens surged into the opening while other companies created their own doors across the Foundry. The surged from all sides as Kesar used the bulkhead as a battering ram to destroy the daemonic machines. The initial breach was massively successful, stunning the daemonic Men of Iron.

Then, Oriacarius' contingency plans were put into place. While the sensors that the Men of Iron used were unknown, the first captain nevertheless had the Legion deploy smoke grenades in case they relied on visual spectra. While this was not the case, when the corrupted machines tried to switch their vision modes, they found that the Thousand Sons would not allow them. Blinded, the machines fired from their defensive emplacements in haphazard patterns. Even with such poor aim, the sheer number of machines still caused mass casualties. Kesar himself was targeted by the vast majority of the machines, and he was unable to assist his sons. In total, another 5000 Wardens died, but their sacrifice was not in vain.

Even as more Wardens died, they moved to create an opening for the rest. Machine after machine was culled, and even with the instant replacements, eventually, there was a single second, where a few Wardens were able to perform a specific action. They threw a grenade at one of the production lines and destroyed it. With that, the hundreds of machines created every second decreased by a dozen machines per second. This freed up Astartes who in turn destroyed the other production lines, and within 120 seconds, the Foundry was totaled.

"I REFUSE TO DIE!" With an unearthly shriek, a monstrous mess of metal dripping with blood and oil screeched from the remains of a production line. With a roar, it charged Kesar screaming "It's play time!" The monstrosity glowed red hot from its joints and power sources as it dumped far more power into its systems than it should have been able to handle. The corrupted metal screamed in unison with the corrupted Man of Iron.

As the monstrosity screamed as it charged at Kesar, the Wardens moved to intercept before Kesar waved them off. The thing was taller than Kesar and far faster than it had any right to be. As it neared, Kesar drew the Sword of the Lost and took up a combat stance. Then, the daemon shrieked in joy as it lunged to stab into Kesar. Smoothly, Kesar sidestepped, swinging his sword once then twice. The Sword of the Lost cut through the daemonic machine's arm as if it was paper.

Then, the daemon engine, still screaming turned in an instant and a furious melee ensued between Primarch and daemon engine. Neither damaged the other as the few strikes the daemon landed were blows that glanced off the Remembrance Armor, while it was forced to avoid the Sword of the Lost. Still, even with Kesar's prodigious skill, he was being forced back. Sooner or later, he would slip up. Then, he made a mistake. As he went to block another strike, he did not watch his footing. Slick with oil and blood, his foot slid an inch to the right. The resulting block was not sturdy, and instead of catching the daemon's claws, Kesar overextended, and the daemon moved to take advantage.

If Kesar was alone, he would have been wounded. But the Wardens were there. While their Primarch fought the daemon engine, they moved to surround the conflict. There, they deployed heavy weapons and Krak grenades. Then, when Kesar was about to be struck, they called out, "Lord Primarch! Withdraw!"

Without a glance, Kesar leaped back. Here, he put his trust in his sons. Kesar was still within striking range, and the increased distance would increase the force of the blow. Of course, the Wardens did not disappoint. They aimed at the arm which was falling towards their gene-father and blew it off at its joints. Distracted by Kesar, the daemon engine did not dodge. With the loss of its other arm, the corrupted machine's scream increased in volume as it turned towards the Wardens, intent on spilling their blood. This was a mistake. With its back turned, the daemon engine never saw Kesar step forward into range for the killing blow. It did, however, see the Sword of the Lost as it stabbed through the daemon engine. With a mighty heave, Kesar tore his sword upwards, and the daemon engine was split in two. Kesar stood, without a mark on him as the remains of the daemon engine fell to the ground. For a moment, the station was quiet. Then, the cheering started.

Finally, the station was cleared. This was a dark day for the Legion as over half the Legion had perished. 65,000 Eternal Wardens died. Once it was confirmed that the daemons on the station were killed, the station began to be mapped out.

There were four areas of interest. The upper levels where residents lived, and life support equipment was stored, the middle levels with offices and work stations, the lower levels where the station's void shield generators were kept, and the foundry where Dark Age manufacturing facilities churned out material in droves.

The upper levels were partially intact. While there was some damage, it was not enough to disguise the archeotech. In fact, with some effort, there would almost certainly be a lot that could be learned. The main issue was, the Golden Age technology was still damaged, and it would take time to fix. Kesar had no doubt that his brothers Vulkan and Ferrus could solve the issue. Perturabo was also a possibility, although Kesar was not sure what to think of him quite yet.

The middle levels of the station were badly damaged. Kesar could see the remains of sensor grids, but they were destroyed when Oriacarius detonated explosives to prevent several thousands of Wardens from dying. Still, it would have been nice to have.

The lower levels of the station were nearly pristine. There was damage, but the Dark Age void shields were still functional. This alone would be fantastic, but there was more. The void shields also had maintenance guides nearby, which would ensure that these Golden Age technologies remained functional for millennia. Sadly, to fully understand these devices, Kesar would need to understand Void Shield Interactions.

Lastly was the foundry, which was beyond devastated. The production lines were used to create daemonic legions and were then destroyed by excessive use of explosives. The rest of the foundry was not much better, with holes in the walls and bullet holes across the area. There were some industrial tools, but Kesar had no idea what these did.

With that, Kesar had a few options of what to do with the station. Firstly, he could convert it into his flagship. While not as powerful as the Imperial Fist's Phalanx, it would still be a strategic asset. Sadly, this would take two years, which was quick thanks to Mechanicus enthusiasm, and would mean the technology would be integrated into the station as well as adapting the station to be turned into a mobile ship.

Secondly, he could dismantle the station and try to reverse engineer the technologies here. This would take decades and would require assistance from other Primarchs. Moreover, the immediate effects would be minor, but if these technologies could be reverse engineered, his Legion would grow far stronger. If he did this, he would have to decide if and who he would bring in to assist.

Thirdly, Kesar could just give the station to the Mechanicus. While he was already receiving praise from members of the Mechanicus, giving them the station would give him free riegn to do whatever research he wanted as long as it did not concern abominable intelligence. However, Kesar was hesitant as he believed the technology on this station would be better off in the hands of a Primarch. In the end, Kesar decided to

[] Turn Gehenna Station into a Flagship (+50 to void warfare when present)
[] Dismantle and Reverse Engineer
-[] Write-in who to involve (Ex. Vulkan, Ferrus, Martian Fabricator General, Perturabo, etc)
[] Give the station to the Mechanicus
[] Write-in

With the housekeeping done, Kesar looked over his Legion. They had grown from this combat. That was a fact he could see. He could tell that the Legion had new beliefs and was stronger now.

[] Survivors of Gehenna – In a single conflict, half of the Eternal Wardens died. Every Brother personally knew someone who perished. With this battle, there are no rookies in the XIth Legion. Every single Astartes has gained combat experience, and they show it on the battlefield. *+15 to all Legion rolls.*
[] Daemonsbane – 97.5 million. The estimate for how many machines the Eternal Wardens killed on Gehenna. On average, this means each of the Eternal Wardens killed 1500 daemonic Men of Iron. One of these machines would kill a normal man in seconds. Is it any wonder that daemons fear the XIth Legion? Their hatred of the neverborn girds their souls, their experience battling daemons guides their hands. The Wardens know how to fight daemons, and there is no one in the Imperium better. *+30 to rolls against daemons*
[] Till Death do us Apart – The Wardens know the pain of their brothers dying. In the Senas system on Gehenna Station, brothers watched, helpless, as their closest friends desperately fought and died. The bonds between them have been forged in fire. They will not give up while their brothers live. They will not join the Lost Ones. To do so would be to break these sacred bonds. *+60 to corruption resistance for Wardens*

After the grueling mission, Kesar retired to his quarters where he continued the tradition he had started. He slowly carved names of those that had died into his armor. It took two weeks. When he was done, he tried to distract himself. He began to create an idea on Gellar fields and warp engines. He did so for the better part of the day until he realized he was avoiding his sons. When he came out, he was drained mentally and emotionally. Then, he saw some of his sons wearing armor with the engravings of the Wardens that had died, and the guilt inside him was replaced with pride.

When he exited, he decided to interact with his sons, but after a few hours, he received an urgent message. "Lord Primarch, the Emperor has summoned you."

Immediately, Kesar stood up and dispensed orders. "Set course for the given coordinates. Ensure the fleet has completed its maintenance cycles. Have my honor guard polish their weapons and armor for arrival."

With that, the fleet set course for the shipyards of Jupiter, where the Bucephalus lay. The magnificent battle barge of his Father's gleamed even at distances of thousands of kilometers and several astronomical units from the Sun. Nevertheless, Kesar ordered his arrival to be announced before a simple message was received. "Permission to come aboard requested."

Kesar approved the request and moved to the hanger bay to meet his Father for the second time. There, the Emperor's shuttle landed smoothly, and the Custodes exited, their gleaming armor drawing attention. Then, the Emperor exited the vessel. Regally, he descended from the ship before he stood in front of Kesar. Now, he waited for Kesar to make the first move. To that end, Kesar spoke up, "Father, may I ask what you request of me?"
"YOU HAVE DONE WELL DORLIN. TAKING THAT STATION WAS UNEXPECTED BUT WELCOME. AS SUCH, I BELIEVE THAT I HAVE USE FOR YOUR TALENT." At this, Kesar swelled with pride, as did his honor guard. But then the Emperor continued. "YOUR LEGION WILL NOW TAKE OVER COMPLIANCE OF WORLDS WITH THE TAINT OF DAEMONS."
"Father, I am afraid that my Legion needs time to recover. Moreover, my other brothers will not like my interference into their affairs."
"THAT IS WHY THIS IS NOT A POSITION. THEY WILL NOT COMPLAIN IF YOU ARE GIVEN A JOB THEY DO NOT WANT. THE ETERNAL WARDENS, HOWEVER, WILL DO WELL IN THIS POSITION. I EXPECT YOUR COMPLIANCE RATE TO REMAIN UNTOUCHED." Perhaps Kesar was misunderstanding, but from he could tell, he had new responsibilities.
The Wardens were now responsible for taking over worlds corrupted by daemons. While this was an honor, he was not receiving recognition for this or additional resources. Additionally, he could not divert resources from elsewhere and would need to do more with the same resources. In response to this, Kesar said

Machine Spirit Research
Machine Spirit Research

While Kesar was moving to Jupiter orbit to visit his Father, the Magos of the Legion's fleet were all, as clandestinely as they could, heading for Mars. While in transit they had seen dozens more Thunderhawks, and Rhinos and other ground vehicles be treated to the Rite of Remembrance, and upon further testing, all appeared to have some degree of effect from the rite. All of it positive. It seems that Machine Spirits of these engines of the Omnissiah's might responded quite favorably to this Rite. Though the larger machines seemed to have less effect than their smaller brethren percentage wise. The absolute values of these difference were often still larger for the larger machines, and they weren't sure what caused this effect. Though some posited it to be a measure of how closely those names were to the Machine Spirits, others their operators, others still thought it was simply the number of names that mattered.

Whatever the cause of this effect, it was clearly something that had a noticeable effect. Something that must be shared with the Archmagos of Mars. And so when Magos Tancker and his fellows arrived at Mars, they headed straight for the Arch-Magos in charge of the docking area that built there fleet. There they described the new Rite they had discovered, and its effects, much to Archmagos Aero's consternation, and delight. A way to better prepare the Machine Spirits, bring them just that much closer to wakefulness? Truly a marvel of the Omnissiah. And yet, it seemed to have little to no effect when it was the Priests of the Omnissiah themselves working alongside these Machines of War. Figuring out why this was would have to completed before bringing it to his own superiors. For any group to better their own partnership with the Sacred Machines was an embarrassment, not easily shared.
And yet shared it is
So they worked to find what about these collections of letters in particular awakened the Machine Spirits so? How could they make this applicable to the the Adeptus Mechanicus own machines? Could they even apply it to the wonders of the God-Machines? If the pattern held true, doing so would be minimal benefit percentage wise, but the absolute destructive might of a Titan meant that even a tiny increase in percent would equate to a vast improvement in potential. Many test cases were built and etched. Copies of the weapons of the Astartes, of their Thunderhawks, and their Rhinos, and while the larger vehicles seemed to have some small response, it was barely noticeable even by the standards of the Mechanicus, nothing compared to the responses when operated by the XI Legion.

They refused to accept that such a rite was unique in its usefulness to a group outside of even the Omnissiah's own. No, it must be something else. And so one of them came up with an idea, to change the names to those of the Mechanicus itself, other thoughts had been tested, of using the Machines blessed language to etch the names to no significant effect, or using the most sacred of tools in the process, none of those had worked and they were getting desperate for some kind of answer to this burning question. So when this junior Magos brought up using names not part of the Rites of Remembrance at all, they moved past their initial distaste and attempted it anyways. Calling up Magos Domina Electra and asking her for a report of those fallen in the Omnissiah's name. With the list, given warily due to the oddness of the request, but given nonetheless, the Magos proceeded to test this new Rite.

And Lo! It worked! With names of those who died in the service of the Omnissiah, the Machine Spirits reacted as well as they ever did for the Legion! Quickly more tests were done. Spreading all throughout the Arch Magos domain. A small area compared to the sheer scale of Mars, but important nonetheless. Without names equivalent to the Lost, the weapon systems went untouched, but the rest of the Machine Spirits all had at least some small effect. It quickly became a question of just what scale this new Rite of the Omnissiah's Regard could be effective at. The Archmagos was not willing to test such a new thing on any of the Ships coming from his own docks, and to even dream of something he created going to use on something as holy as the God-Machines was an act of arrogance he dared not contemplate, still he had proof of its effects on the smaller Machines and so he brought it to his superiors attention. Archmagos Nikalo in charge of a whole section of the Ring of Mars, there he shared the secrets learned.

The galaxy as a whole spun on, unconcerned the with workings of Man or any other race, but... something new had been found. A whole new line of research into why the Machine Spirits might react this way, but also new knowledge surely known by the humans of yester-year but known now again by the Priesthood of Mars. A new thought, a new rite, knowledge gleaned by watching the world around them instead of only looking at the works of the Dark Age, masters of Technology. Possibly a small thing, but even a small thing to a group as far-reaching as the Priesthood of Mars can have an effect.

A First Captain's Independence
A First Captain's Independence
After his conversation with his Father, Kesar was worried. More concerned over the future of his Legion than any time before, including after the catastrophic fighting aboard the station. For this new task his Father had put him on was dangerous. Not just physically, though the dead would surely mount if any future world was nearly as difficult as that station, even with the lessons learned from it. But the fear of corruption, for any more of his sons being Lost. And, a small part of himself worried about his own risks, of the scars he had gotten fighting Daemons and the worry of what they could mean. And so, before doing anything else, he went to have a long talk once more with Oriacarius.

This conversation was far more subdued. It was not about what the Legion could learn from a fight, but instead what they could learn of their greatest Shame, and their bitterest regrets. The Loss, and what they could do to minimize those risks when going up against corruptive forces again and again. Kesar even brought up his greatest fear, of failing like his sons before him, and being Lost to the daemons of the Warp. Something he hoped he would destroy himself before doing, if ever even put into such a position. However, he knew that his sons thought the same, and yet they were Lost anyways. The machinations of daemons are sinister and often unfathomable, to believe himself outside their reach an act of arrogance he refused to allow himself. And so, he put to Oriacarius a dire charge. "If by some damndable means I know not, I am ever corrupted against Mankind and all things good, my son. I require you to split from me. To recognize my lapse and lead the Legion against me, to drop all ties and add me to the list of the Lost, and destroy me. I need you to keep your independence son, so that I may continue to work against the Daemon without fear that if I should falter, I would drag my sons down with me. Promise me this Oriacarius, and ready yourself for it, just in case."

This was something Oriacarius never wished to face. An enemy he could not fight. The idea of his Father, his Primarch, his Lord being lost to the depredations of the warp? Unthinkable, and yet... he was being asked not just to think of the concern, but to ready himself for it. To prepare to replace his father as the head of the Legion, should it prove necessary. This was not something he could conceive of, how could he ever be a match? He had lead the Legion before the Primarch had been found it was true, but he had not the skill, the wit, the charisma, the strength or speed of a Primarch. How could he do this task? ... but how could he say no? How could he refuse this charge? How could he allow his Legion to fall to the corrupting influence of Chaos? The Legion served Mankind, and it must always do so. No one person could be worth more than All of Man. He would have to do this. He would have to prepare. Create contingencies against even the most dire of threats. What would he do if the other Primarchs were to be Lost? All this and more went through Oriacarius head as he pondered his gene-fathers charge. Before he looked up into the eyes of his Lord, and with a face grimmer than ever before he said two words that would forever change the relationship between them. "Yes, Kesar." Not lord, not father, not Primarch. If he were to do this task, he must separate himself from standard Legion thinking, to ensure he always questioned the meanings behind Kesar's actions, to ensure they held no taint of the daemonic.

Kesar sighed, and nodded. Understanding the thoughts going through his First Captains head. Understanding what this would mean, and relishing in having a backup in case he himself fell. Though he intended for such to never be necessary. It could not be guaranteed. So with that most dire of tasks completed, they began a much less terrifying topic, how to take a world overrun by daemons, whilst keeping their Legion intact.

After the discussion was over. Oriacarius began his own work. Creating contingency after contingency, something his mind worked well at. From the corruption of his own Gene-Father, to the corruption of himself, for if a Primarch could be corrupted, surely he himself could be as well. Though he would work every day to gird himself against such a horrible end, he would not shame his Lord, no shame Kesar by being less willing to conceive of his own failure. In the days that followed some of these contingencies were put in place, others kept within his own mind to be studied, and improved. Training plans were updated to include more flexible leadership expectations, and throughout it all contempt for the Daemonic was underscored. Something to strive for, nearly as much as the intent to serve Mankind as best as possible. And so the Legion changed made that slight bit more ready to face the coming darkness, for it was certain, as the tip of the spear against the madness of the Warp, they would find it, and bring the Eternal Sovereigns Light when they did.

Godslayer
Godslayer
This was a dark day. Oriacarius had spent weeks after his most dire conversation with Kesar deciding how he was going to do his duty. Not that he would, that was decided within seconds of hearing what his duty was. But the how of it? How does one stop a Primarch? Let alone... end... one? Especially one corrupted by the warp? Even the original Lost were far more dangerous than their brother's were before being corrupted. Though, in a specific way... perhaps that was the answer? In all their battles with forces corrupted by the Warp, there had been patterns.

The daemonic Man of Iron was clearly corrupted by something that cared almost solely for melee combat, that craved battle and death, and its main body was a terror that matched even a Primarch. Yet it was clearly too focused on its current combat and was relatively easily picked off by battle brothers standing off at range. Perhaps that could be made us of?

Tales told of the last great battle of Valhalla, where Kesar had fought the Greater Daemon, it was clearly not as skilled, strong, or fast. But seemed ever better at planning for contingencies than himself. Yet, such plans can always be overwhelmed. Perhaps there was a way to make use of that. Especially the way daemons of this type seemed most often to be changed physically. He would have to speak with the Thousand Sons for ways to mitigate the psyker effects such a corruption would likely implement as well.

The battle on Sakini had shown what horrible monstrosities of flesh the daemons of plague could turn his brothers into. If something similar happened to Kesar, the being that would result would be neigh-immune to any small arms fire. Heavy weaponry or explosives would be required, and it would have to be at extreme range, to keep the diseased remnants of his lord from effecting his brothers. A terrifying thought, but one he refused to shy away from.

Beyond even these known dangers however Oriacarius planned further, he made contingencies, that is who and what he was, so he made plans for other ways corruption could take his father. Could take Kesar. He must always remember that his father might not always be true, even if his body still lived. Best to keep to the name especially in his thoughts, even if he continued to call him Lord, Primarch, and Father when in front of others.

One of his darkest fears was what would happen if his father were to be corrupted by all three of the daemonic types the Legion had faced so far. He hoped desperately that such could not happen, but if it could? He had to be ready. He had to be able to strike down the Lost, no matter the form they took. All of this he had to consider. And beyond that he had to implement. Much of the groundwork had been laid, but even still. He knew that the secret of these contingencies must not get out, and be used by the enemies of the Legion. And so he resolved to ensure the secret of them was kept even from himself. He would be mind-wiped, the knowledge kept of even his own contingencies kept from himself, and all involved to ensure their effectiveness, and that the dire acts would only be brought into play under specific conditions. Even so, subliminal effects would ensure he would be reawakened to the knowledge regularly to verify that his contingencies remained in place and effective. As well that new information could be used to implement more effective plans. Ever more contingencies put in place as new equipment, new knowledge, new circumstances appeared that allowed it. Though he desperately hoped that none of this would ever be needed.
What dedication cousin, could lead to you facing such dark duty without flinching?
He was the First Captain of the Eternal Wardens, and his watch would be Eternal, though he greatly desired for them to be unnecessary. It was time for his first mind-wipe. He entered into the chamber sat down, and the Magos got to work. Not knowing the reasoning behind such actions, but sworn to secrecy and even to have his own mind wiped of the act. For the good of Mankind. Upon finishing the First Captain walked away. Thinking that it was a bright day. Their Legion had a difficult assignment, but they were the best to accomplish it, trusted by the Eternal Sovereign himself to see it done, and they would see even the darkest worlds, corrupted by the Warp in totality, cleansed. How could they not with their Primarch at the head?

Achilles
Achilles
Oriacarius is a careful man. He plans for everything. While he can trust his Lord, can he truly trust that he himself will never be Lost to the corruptive influences of the warp? Surely not, when so many of his Brothers have been Lost before him. With his position as First Captain, keeping himself pure is of great import, but he could not let his fears keep him from his duty. So with no way to guarantee his own purity. He would have to take steps, make contingencies, just in case he fell.

Beyond that though, he would need to have trusted personnel in place to lead when he was gone. Even beyond being corrupted, the chances of his own death are high. It was amazing he had survived at all, when tens of thousands of his Brothers had fallen. Best to ensure that he had contingencies in place, just in case. Other captains, given additional time with him to discuss tactics and strategy, to ensure that they all had sufficient skill. Maybe getting together for regular sessions, especially if Kesar would be there. Weird, why did he think of his name instead of Father? Odd... but unimportant. It would be best to spread the strategic and tactical skill of the Captains out to the rest of the leadership as best as possible, to ensure that if any one of them were to die, or worse be corrupted there would be others who could take up the slack.

Still for his own position, he could not be allowed to survive if he was corrupted. There could be no mercy save that of death for the Lost. For his own life, to serve his legion, he must make plans. Sergeants, Neophytes, Tech-Marines and Apothecaries, all had their records gone over, interviewed in ways that seemed like normal conversation, to find those he could trust to end him if the worst happened. Contingencies put into place to ensure they would not falter, others to ensure that they'd have the opportunity. Even with this, secrecy was paramount. The Legion as a whole did not need to worry about such dark thoughts as this, not after so many of their Brothers had Fallen.

Eventually he had a list of names, those he felt would be best suited to remove the threat of a Lost First Captain. Explosives experts, snipers, melee champions, apothecaries, tech-marines. All potentially required if any of a variety of different forms of potential corruption were to manifest themselves. He interviewed each potential candidate, ensuring their suitability for the task at hand, and when he found ones unsuited had their minds wiped. When he found ones that were suited however, he explained his concerns.

To a man all those that he chose for the task were appalled at the thought. But upon further reflection they realized the danger such an event could pose. They understood that it would be the darkest act they could think of, to be part of a plan to destroy their First Captain. But they further realized it was just his body, if the contingency were to be activated, it would no longer be the First Captain the so respected within that body. But some daemon thing infesting his flesh. To remove it would be a service to his memory. Just another name added to the roll of the Lost. And what a terrible thing it is, that they had so many names already. At least with the fallen it was expected that their Battle Brothers would die in battle, serving the Eternal Sovereign.

The individuals, scattered all throughout the Legion were briefed on their parts, what to do, and under what circumstances they were to do their part. Many of them were to work together with others of the Legion picked for this task, others were to do their parts solo, these were the most dedicated of the Legion, willing even to go to such extremes as ramming a thunderhawk directly into the First Captain, if nothing else seemed to work. Whatever it took to ensure that he could not damage the Legion more with his knowledge of how it worked, and the contingencies in place. Oh Cousins, what terrible knowledge you face, and yet what unflinching hearts by which you face it. My Father must learn of this, and what it might mean.
All of these Battle Brothers took their duty seriously, and while they were mind-wiped to ensure secrecy of such terrible plans, they were all implanted with subliminal triggers to ensure if they were needed, they would be ready. For those they Cherish, they shall not falter.

Godslayer - Godslayer - Oriacarius creates contingencies. It's how his tactics work and how he operates. After Kesar told him to create contingencies in case the Primarch himself fell, he did just that. A desperate plan to kill a fallen Primarch, its contents were mindwiped from Oriacarius' own mind. It should never be enacted. *Gain the Godslayer Contingency*

The Wonderful Weapon Emporium - Materials Science - Kesar spent some time working to find materials that could improve Astartes power armor. It is as if they have been replaced with a new person. *+25 to detecting corruption within the Wardens*

The End of a Fallen Daemon Hunter - A Final Mercy - Facing corrupted brothers is a difficult task. Merely seeing their faces has been known to make Astartes fight at less than their full strength. Nevertheless, they still try to persevere. The Wardens on Valhalla and Sakini have spread an important belief. The only thing they can give the Lost that used to be there brothers, is a final mercy. One last boelter shell fired in their honor, one last sword strike in their honor, one final grand explosion to cremate their corpse. *No Morale Penalty for Fighting Corrupted Astartes*

Kesar Dorlin - Remembrancer Depiction - Engravings of the Fallen - A famous tradition amongst the Eternal Wardens involves carving the names of those who have died into their armor. Kesar's armor takes this one step further. Instead of a name, each fallen Warden leaves behind a story. Their life's actions, their triumphs, their failures, their virtues, their faults, and most importantly, their last moments, their last thoughts, their last feelings. All of this is immortalized in the Primarch's armor. *?????*

What's New In The World Of Warhammer: Dorlinian Continuity Part 4? - GM answers "In depth, what exactly are Chaos planning to do the four Primarch you named via attribute - how exactly are they getting them turned against us?"
1a. For Horus, they plan to slowly fan his jealousy of you by having him begin to throw himself into the Crusade more and have Kesar perform more heroic deeds while Horus never understands why Kesar is being praised. Then, when he is jealous and bitter, they will use their panic buttons to turn him.
b. For Dorn, he failed so many checks repeatedly. As is, nearly a third of his Legion fell to Khorne and the Alpha Legion and Dorn failed to notice. Basically, they plan to just build up to 50%, where Khorne will use a panic button to summon one of his Exalted to have a glorious carnage with Dorn.
c. For Magnus, Slaanesh plans to give a bunch of daemonic artifacts for Magnus to research to tempt him, which is giving Tzeentch an aneurysm because he wants Magnus.
d. For Khan, Slaanesh is trying to get him to delve into racing more as well as culture. However, the other Chaos Gods do not want this.

What's New In The World Of Warhammer: Dorlinian Continuity Part 5? - GM answers "Reveal all the bonuses for the last omake."
For I Must Scream - He never wanted this. He just wanted to show that Kesar was harming humanity. Lorgar never planned to betray his father so why did he leave. The question plagued his mind over and over again. Why was he doing this? Why? It shouldn't be happening. For a moment, he understood what he had fallen to and screamed. Then, the clarity was lost, and he continued to worship the four. *Lorgar has a 25% chance to ignore an order from the Chaos Gods*
We were Heroes - Kesar and Lorgar were Primarchs. They were the ones who humanity looked up to as saviors. In the dark times that humanity had fallen to, they were the ones that led humanity. Now, one of the heroes has fallen. Still, Kesar remains, continuous in his vigil, and will continue to act as the champion that humanity deserves. *+5 to combat from extremely loyal human troops*
Death Comes - Lorgar the Lost, the Fallen Primarch, so many names for the one Lost to humanity. Kesar was the one he hated most, and Kesar would be the one to end him. It was a necessary evil that Kesar would shoulder. His brother was Lost for eternity and the only mercy that could be given was death. *25% chance to true death Lorgar if killed by Kesar*

Man and Monster - For I Must Scream - He never wanted this.

What's New In The World Of Warhammer: Dorlinian Continuity Part 6? - +10 to a roll of the GM's choice

What's New In The World Of Warhammer: Dorlinian Continuity Part 7? - Lorgar has been working on trying to find a way out of the Eye of Terror and he has found a ship that can get him to Cadia. He plans to land after Dorn is hopefully defeated and convince him to join Chaos with his stupidly high diplomacy, which has been further boosted by Slaanesh to the point that just listening to him triggers corruption rolls.

What's New In The World Of Warhammer: Dorlinian Continuity Part 8? - So, you remember back when in a Daemon Hunter's Fall you had one of the Lost Ones die after his brother sacrificed himself? Well, I rolled a while back to see if he survived, and he did. He also openned a warp rift and is working on trying to find some way to corrupt the Wardens. However, he is just one person, so he has been searching for artifacts of old every year in order to use. Then, once he found an artifact Scafrir died giving you enough resistance to make the artifact not worth it, so he has been trying to link up with Lorgar.

The Eleventh Son
The Eleventh Son

Here's a nice piece to accompany this, a Valhallan mood, as they say:

The Eleventh Son was no stranger to suffering.

Back to the moment where he awoke from his pod, where he felt the planet's chilling cold. In front of him were a pack of madman, covered in blasphemous symbols and reeking of filth. Shouting nonsense and raising a blade, their leader was prepared to sacrifice him to their wretched god. Before the Son could retaliate however, the leader was suddenly removed of their head. A company of warriors had descended upon the lunatics, guns blazing. It wasn't long before the enemies were completely routed, and the Son was quickly clothed and whisked to their home in Kalapa.

Kelsang and Nymia Dorlin were their names. One a humble soldier and other a steadfast medic, only remaining in the military because of their experience. Both were met and wed in the field of battle, they gave their all to protect their home and friends. The couple often joked they took him in because he was too adorable, despite the Son reminding the mother she was sterile. Still, they duo were not without scars. With each day, Kelsang returned with more scars. With each day, Nymia failed to save more lives. Nevertheless, the Eleventh Son watched as they pushed on without hesitation.

"For the ones we cherish," Nymia explained as she applied healing herbs onto a wounded soldier. "For everyone's blood and sweat, we must push on."

"Our God didn't place us on these mountains just to have us do nothing," Kelsang muttered as he cleaned his autogun. "Though many died on the way, all of us are chasing for that light at the end."

The Eleventh Son was no stranger to suffering, but such was the truth to living.

---

The Eleventh Son was no stranger to evil.

He witnessed the atrocities committed by those his parents call "Cultists," heretical followers of blasphemous gods, wishing to bring the the creatures known as daemons into this world. Kesar learned to detest these monsters, betraying their fellow man to sow needless chaos. As a soldier, the Son's father vowed to keep them away from his family. Although the Son argued he could easily take care of himself, Kelsang still insisted anyway.

It was unexpected the labs would be attacked by the cults. As the halls burned, innocents were slaughtered and subjected to fates no one should deserve. Luckily, the local regiment managed to meet the cultists and engaged in intense fighting. Kesar proved helpful in the researchers' survival, as he managed to escort the them to safety before seeking to assist the soldiers against the enemies. But in midst of the the chaos, the world slowed down; a sight of his father Kelsang, with his right arm severed by some cultist.

"Kesar…" Kelsang rasped, before crumbling onto the ground.
It wasn't long before Kesar plunged his bayonet out of the last cultist. His father will live, they said, but it's unlikely he could ever fight again. Knowing the government's policies, Kesar would have to pick up his load in order to make things meet. And for his family's sake, he will do it without hesitation.

Kesar Dorlin was no stranger to evil, but it allows distinction between what is right and wrong.

---

Kesar Dorlin was no stranger to loss.

The man stared at the grave of his foster mother and father. It was an unremarkable grave, with naught but two headstones with their names etched along the surface. Old age, they said, for all that was available to the Wyrdseeker could not stave off the passage of time. Kesar remembered the moment where his father was cremated to ash, and scattering them on the cliff side which the couple had found him. He also remembered the days which mother would stare longingly towards the horizon before going back to work. And even as Nymia's memories eroded with age, she would never forget the name "Kelsang."

Since Kesar was fighting the winged daemon, he missed Nymia's final moments. They had already cremated her, and given the urn to Kesar. It was a private moment, and rightfully so; for in Kalapa, death of a family member is a quiet matter. Kesar looked down at the still-filled urn, and placed it back in his coat. He planned to spread the ashes onto the same cliff side, so mother could join father in their final journey. Although life was harsh, Kesar was glad they were there for him.

As if by instinct, Kesar looked towards the skies. From above the clouds, glints of gold and steel reflected across the mountainsides.
The future Primarch closed his eyes, and walked down the stairs.

Kesar Dorlin was no stranger to loss, but with every farewells comes new encounters.
Who knows, perhaps he could finally have a family of his own.
This way, he can finally repay the time the couple had spent on him.

THE OMAKES WILL NEVER END
heh.
