Kesar and the Aftermath
Kesar and the Aftermath
As Kesar walked through the halls of his flagship, he saw most of his sons had their own weapons and armor marked similarly to his own. Etched with the names of those fallen, and those Lost. Many had not yet finished placing all the names of the fallen as yet. There were so, so, many. It'd taken him days to finish all of them himself, and he had tools prepared specifically for the task. Still seeing his Legion honoring those that had made the ultimate sacrifice in battle, and continuing on with their work, shouldering the burden of the past to prepare the way for the future eased some of the pain in his heart.

Eventually his wanderings took him to the Bridge of the ship, where he had expected to see Oriacarius, and yet he wasn't there. "Captain of the Watch Trsymal, where is First Captain Oriacarius?" He asked the relatively junior Captain currently handling the Bridge while they traveled through the warp.

"He has been in the Champions Armory nearly since we were underway my Lord, he wished to partake in the new Tradition of Remembrance." Trysmal replied, with a barely repressed stutter at speaking directly to his gene-father. Obviously nervous at the attention, though determined to do his utmost through the tension.

Kesar smiled with a touch of melancholy at him, "Ah, thank you Trysmal. Carry on." So saying he left the bridge, heading towards the Champions Armory. Not typically where Oriacarius would go for maintenance rights for his own equipment, but the Champions Armory had special tools for engraving in response to valorous deeds, now being used to remember the deeds of others. A good use of the tools, if anything was.

It did not take long for Kesar to make his way to the Champions Armory. Once there however, he did not interrupt Oriacarius, who seemed highly intent upon his task, instead he merely counted each of the names already etched into his wargear, and touching each of those names on his own. At a Primarch's speed it did not take him long to finish, and upon doing so he realized that there were few names left to be etched. Each name took far longer than the others he had seen, Oriacarius apparently put as much forethought into every stroke of the etching tool as he did to his battle plans. Looking around the Armory, Kesar realized that most of the workbenches were full of his sons writing their own list of names into their weapons and armor. All at difference paces, many with individual names in different locations. Though all seemingly within a few specific sets of locations, likely at the direction of the Tech-Priests in charge of maintaining the Legions gear.

Kesar takes this time to look over his sons work, showing his appreciation of their choices, and commiserating with them regarding all the brothers they have lost. All quietly, not wanting to interrupt or distract the others as they work. Still with over 60,000 names, many of his Sons were finishing the work in sets between other important tasks. Eventually, Oriacarius finished, and Kesar headed over to him, placing a hand on his shoulder, "Oriacarius, now that you've finished, I'd like to discuss some things with you. Follow me please."

Oriacarius looks up at Kesar, a sad look on his face, then back to his wargear, covered in tens of thousands of names of the fallen. "Of course my Lord," he responds somberly, putting his armor back on and re-equipping his weapons.

Together they head out of the Champions Armory, and to Kesar's private quarters. He lets the First Captain in, closes the door behind them, and then hugs his first captain tight. Something Oriacarius responds to after a moment of shock. After a long moment, Kesar releases him and steps away. "We, are going to discuss how to keep another day like this one from ever happening again." Kesar says to him, a look of grim resolve in his eyes. "We both did the best we could, and yet it still lost us more than half our legion on this singular station. We need to find better ways for the Legion to operate in combat without my presence, I will not always be able to be there where the fighting is hardest, and my sons must learn to handle these threats on their own. We both must learn all we can from this battle, it is far from likely this is the last Man of Iron we will ever face. So tell me Oriacarius, everything you recall from entering the system it held, all the way through until the entire station was cleared."

"Of course, father." Oriacarius begins explaining how they entered the system from the warp, and began checking sensor readings to determine any threats. The decision making progress that led to 45,000 battle brothers entering the massive station, the reasoning behind every action, every decision, the details missed in the battle that led to the enemy's surprise attacks succeeding, and those caught that led to them failing. Every moment of the battle picked apart in detail, to be debated with the knowledge of hind-sight, and to be viewed with a mind to the future and how to react to similar instances. From the realization that the enemy was reclaiming and reusing the wrecks of previous machines and what was done to mitigate such things, to how to be better equipped to mitigate that technique in future. A basic plan was forming in Kesar's mind, for the next time they fought such a terrible foe. Preparations to make, equipment to be commissioned. He'd still have to talk to others, learn all he could from as many of his Sons as were there in the fighting. He was determined to never let a similar catastrophe effect his legion again, not when there was any possible way to mitigate it. Even a single percent more effective tactics would mean hundreds more of his sons alive, and he would see to it that next time, those tactics, those strategies were in place.

I did, but then I wound up talking to a friend for some time. Now after this I'll sleep. For real this time. Now your reward

Let me know if you want something else instead.

Edit: Good night (for real this time)
Think I'm going to go with the artificial warp rifts option. Unique tech seems interesting, and doing it with Magnus, will hopefully allow for important lessons on safety to sink in. Or if nothing else, teach him more safe things about the warp, which will help to protect him. Or at the very least, give Magnus someone else to warn instead of the Emperor if Horus goes crazy again, stopping the whole comedy of errors that ended with Prospero burning.

The Adeptus Mechanicus and the Rite of Remembrance
The Adeptus Mechanicus and the Rite of Remembrance
As Kesar talked with Oriacarius, other far less outwardly emotional people were having their own discussions about the aftermath of the fighting in Senas. Specifically regarding the Legions new practice of etching the names of their dead into their wargear. Something that the Tech-Priests were initially ambivalent towards, so long as the Legions showed proper respect and deference to the Machine Spirits. And yet, in case after case, after the Legionary had completed their ritual, the Machine Spirits responded, never by an amount noticeable even by the super-human but still flesh senses of an Astartes, yet noticeable all the same to the incredible perceptions of the Machine. Just a few fractions of a percent improvement in performance, from muzzle velocity of the Volkite weaponry, to the reaction speeds of the servo-motors in their power armor. In every case, in every test, miniscule differences appeared between pre-ritual, and post-ritual tests. None of this was spread beyond the Adeptus of course, for none knew why this would have such a consistent effect on the Machine Spirits.

Could it be as simple as the Machine Spirits desire to ensure their own users did not fall? Or the rage at so many of mankinds finest having fallen? Was it an ancient Rite of the Machine that they had somehow forgotten, and now by chance, found again? If so, why did the Rite not seem to work if any but an Astartes from the Legion used those weapons? Why would the Machine Spirit, enraged or energized by the Rite of Remembrance, perform only so well when an Astartes used it, and not when a Priest of the Omnissiah tested it? In secret, some of the lesser Enginseers were tasked with doing their own Rite of Remembrance with the same names, and the same rules as were given to the Astartes, and yet upon completion, they showed no effect. Except again, when used by a member of the Legion. It was maddening! It was strange! It was knowledge they did not have before!

But what was to be done about it? Was it something that the Machine Spirits of the Legion responded to purely because of some quirk of the Legion they were picking up on that even the Priests of the Omnissiah missed? How could that be? And some among the Adeptus Mechanicus wondered at the idea of using the Rite of Remembrance on larger engines. What effect would it have on more powerful Machine Spirits, like that of a Land Raider, or even of a ship? Eventually it was decided among the Magos of the fleet, to subtly encourage the Legion if any showed an inclination to perform the Rite on some of their vehicles, though for now, not to encourage such for the ships themselves. The Machine Spirits of a Warp Ship were mighty and easily angered, best not to risk it with such little data regarding the Rite.

It did not take long before a Thunderhawk crew decided they wanted to perform the Rite of Remembrance on their craft. Something they wisely questioned their assigned Enginseer about first. Thankfully the decision had been made and spread out to those in positions to make these decisions quickly. So when Enginseer Jallop was asked about the best places to etch the names into the armor of the Thunderhawk, he was able to give answers approved by a senior Magos immediately. There were a few specific places the Magos thought best to have the names placed. Locations that the Machine Spirit would be most amenable to, locations with the thickest armor, as well certain more delicate locations that improved attention towards might lead to the craft's Machine Spirit feeling well cared for. Or simply to remind the pilot of the location and its importance to to the function of the craft. They also asked about the best locations for the names of the Lost of the legion, to be etched into the weapons. Here again the Magos had plans in place. Along the ammo-feeder for improved efficiency and a decrease in the chances of jams, across the tops of targeting cogitators to bring further insight, other varied possibilities. For a craft of this size, there were not enough names to fill every possible location, and so the Magos had instructed Jallop to suggest a specific pattern for the craft under his watch, while other Enginseers would have their own patterns, and the Adeptus would learn more about this Rite from how the different locations effected their charges.

After the crew completed their Rite, the names of their Fallen and Lost brothers adorning the Thunderhawk in a variety of locations, they performed the Rite of Crew Maintenance upon it, the basic ritual taught to all Thunderhawk crew to show their respect and admiration for the Machine Spirit. Once finished they left, for their own things and Enginseer Jallop descended upon that craft and began far more intense Rites of Bay Maintenance. While also alerting his Magos superior of the completion of the Rite of Remembrance. It did not take long for the Magos to join him, and together they worked to verify the state of the Machine Spirit, and like the wargear before it, the Machine Spirit of the Thunderhawk seemed just that slightest bit more responsive, going through the Ritual of On with milliseconds less time. Nothing that would be immediately obvious to the uninitiated but clearly present to those who were. It seemed the higher Magos were accurate in their assessment as to the importance of locations too. Those areas directly marked had slightly higher increases than the base amount present across the craft as a whole. Upon completing all the tests he was aware of Jollop stood back and let the Magos continue with his far more advanced work and wondered at what this could mean, and what effect these Rites of Remembrance could have in the future.

I do not think I can contribute more in the next two days. Far too much workload. But I am free on Monday. I do n't think of any more religion omake, maybe I will focus more on pre primarch Valhalla?

how much ad mech support for our new duties once we trade ownership of the station to them? and can we still use the station as a second phalanx and eventually upgraed it to phalanx size?

Also we must talk to Dad-peror , even if to achive this we would be forced to use Golden Banana Man as a ram to break through walls of Imperial Palace till we reach Throne Room .

(Great omake material here btw:p.)

Speaking of the omake regarding the Admech, perhaps have them do their own version of the Rite of Remembrance, with them etching Technology's names or fellow priests names down... Might work?

[X] Lead the charge slow and steady securing a bulkhead and slowly advancing to not risk as many lives
-[X] Employ technomancy

During the strategy session, Kesar decided that it was time for him to lead his sons into battle. While they had done an excellent job, his presence would make the mission far easier. For the rest of the plan, it was quickly agreed to be a slow but steady advance. Secure the perimeter before slowly pushing in to preserve life. The Thousand Sons would also be put to use as their technomancy would come in handy here. Hopefully, the Wardens would finally purge the daemonic infestation.

With that, the Legion was organized into groups and individual companies received their orders. Then Kesar spoke into the vox. "Wardens, we are at the end. 60,000 of my sons and your brothers have died on this station. That stops. The thrice-damned daemon has cowered in the foundry as it sends hordes of daemonic Men of Iron to slow our advance. We pushed forward. Despite being outnumbered a hundred to one, we pushed. Now, we push one last time. For the Sovereign."

"FOR THE SOVEREIGN!" The Eternal Wardens cheered as the end of the battle was in sight. There gene-father was leading the charge, and now the final conflict on Station Gehenna began. With a roar, the Wardens charged forward towards the bulkheads that led to the foundry. And in front, stood Kesar. Clad in his Remembrance Armor and wielding the Sword of the Lost, he charged at the bulkhead that withstood heavy weapons fire and Astartes terminators. It did not even slow him as he tore through it. The Wardens surged into the opening while other companies created their own doors across the Foundry. The surged from all sides as Kesar used the bulkhead as a battering ram to destroy the daemonic machines. The initial breach was massively successful, stunning the daemonic Men of Iron.

Then, Oriacarius' contingency plans were put into place. While the sensors that the Men of Iron used were unknown, the first captain nevertheless had the Legion deploy smoke grenades in case they relied on visual spectra. While this was not the case, when the corrupted machines tried to switch their vision modes, they found that the Thousand Sons would not allow them. Blinded, the machines fired from their defensive emplacements in haphazard patterns. Even with such poor aim, the sheer number of machines still caused mass casualties. Kesar himself was targeted by the vast majority of the machines, and he was unable to assist his sons. In total, another 5000 Wardens died, but their sacrifice was not in vain.

Even as more Wardens died, they moved to create an opening for the rest. Machine after machine was culled, and even with the instant replacements, eventually, there was a single second, where a few Wardens were able to perform a specific action. They threw a grenade at one of the production lines and destroyed it. With that, the hundreds of machines created every second decreased by a dozen machines per second. This freed up Astartes who in turn destroyed the other production lines, and within 120 seconds, the Foundry was totaled.

"I REFUSE TO DIE!" With an unearthly shriek, a monstrous mess of metal dripping with blood and oil screeched from the remains of a production line. With a roar, it charged Kesar screaming "It's play time!" The monstrosity glowed red hot from its joints and power sources as it dumped far more power into its systems than it should have been able to handle. The corrupted metal screamed in unison with the corrupted Man of Iron.

As the monstrosity screamed as it charged at Kesar, the Wardens moved to intercept before Kesar waved them off. The thing was taller than Kesar and far faster than it had any right to be. As it neared, Kesar drew the Sword of the Lost and took up a combat stance. Then, the daemon shrieked in joy as it lunged to stab into Kesar. Smoothly, Kesar sidestepped, swinging his sword once then twice. The Sword of the Lost cut through the daemonic machine's arm as if it was paper.

Then, the daemon engine, still screaming turned in an instant and a furious melee ensued between Primarch and daemon engine. Neither damaged the other as the few strikes the daemon landed were blows that glanced off the Remembrance Armor, while it was forced to avoid the Sword of the Lost. Still, even with Kesar's prodigious skill, he was being forced back. Sooner or later, he would slip up. Then, he made a mistake. As he went to block another strike, he did not watch his footing. Slick with oil and blood, his foot slid an inch to the right. The resulting block was not sturdy, and instead of catching the daemon's claws, Kesar overextended, and the daemon moved to take advantage.

If Kesar was alone, he would have been wounded. But the Wardens were there. While their Primarch fought the daemon engine, they moved to surround the conflict. There, they deployed heavy weapons and Krak grenades. Then, when Kesar was about to be struck, they called out, "Lord Primarch! Withdraw!"

Without a glance, Kesar leaped back. Here, he put his trust in his sons. Kesar was still within striking range, and the increased distance would increase the force of the blow. Of course, the Wardens did not disappoint. They aimed at the arm which was falling towards their gene-father and blew it off at its joints. Distracted by Kesar, the daemon engine did not dodge. With the loss of its other arm, the corrupted machine's scream increased in volume as it turned towards the Wardens, intent on spilling their blood. This was a mistake. With its back turned, the daemon engine never saw Kesar step forward into range for the killing blow. It did, however, see the Sword of the Lost as it stabbed through the daemon engine. With a mighty heave, Kesar tore his sword upwards, and the daemon engine was split in two. Kesar stood, without a mark on him as the remains of the daemon engine fell to the ground. For a moment, the station was quiet. Then, the cheering started.

Finally, the station was cleared. This was a dark day for the Legion as over half the Legion had perished. 65,000 Eternal Wardens died. Once it was confirmed that the daemons on the station were killed, the station began to be mapped out.

There were four areas of interest. The upper levels where residents lived, and life support equipment was stored, the middle levels with offices and work stations, the lower levels where the station's void shield generators were kept, and the foundry where Dark Age manufacturing facilities churned out material in droves.

The upper levels were partially intact. While there was some damage, it was not enough to disguise the archeotech. In fact, with some effort, there would almost certainly be a lot that could be learned. The main issue was, the Golden Age technology was still damaged, and it would take time to fix. Kesar had no doubt that his brothers Vulkan and Ferrus could solve the issue. Perturabo was also a possibility, although Kesar was not sure what to think of him quite yet.

The middle levels of the station were badly damaged. Kesar could see the remains of sensor grids, but they were destroyed when Oriacarius detonated explosives to prevent several thousands of Wardens from dying. Still, it would have been nice to have.

The lower levels of the station were nearly pristine. There was damage, but the Dark Age void shields were still functional. This alone would be fantastic, but there was more. The void shields also had maintenance guides nearby, which would ensure that these Golden Age technologies remained functional for millennia. Sadly, to fully understand these devices, Kesar would need to understand Void Shield Interactions.

Lastly was the foundry, which was beyond devastated. The production lines were used to create daemonic legions and were then destroyed by excessive use of explosives. The rest of the foundry was not much better, with holes in the walls and bullet holes across the area. There were some industrial tools, but Kesar had no idea what these did.

With that, Kesar had a few options of what to do with the station. Firstly, he could convert it into his flagship. While not as powerful as the Imperial Fist's Phalanx, it would still be a strategic asset. Sadly, this would take two years, which was quick thanks to Mechanicus enthusiasm, and would mean the technology would be integrated into the station as well as adapting the station to be turned into a mobile ship.

Secondly, he could dismantle the station and try to reverse engineer the technologies here. This would take decades and would require assistance from other Primarchs. Moreover, the immediate effects would be minor, but if these technologies could be reverse engineered, his Legion would grow far stronger. If he did this, he would have to decide if and who he would bring in to assist.

Thirdly, Kesar could just give the station to the Mechanicus. While he was already receiving praise from members of the Mechanicus, giving them the station would give him free riegn to do whatever research he wanted as long as it did not concern abominable intelligence. However, Kesar was hesitant as he believed the technology on this station would be better off in the hands of a Primarch. In the end, Kesar decided to

[] Dismantle and Reverse Engineer
-[] Write-in who to involve (Ex. Vulkan, Ferrus, Martian Fabricator General, Perturabo, etc)
[] Give the station to the Mechanicus

With the housekeeping done, Kesar looked over his Legion. They had grown from this combat. That was a fact he could see. He could tell that the Legion had new beliefs and was stronger now.

[] Survivors of Gehenna – In a single conflict, half of the Eternal Wardens died. Every Brother personally knew someone who perished. With this battle, there are no rookies in the XIth Legion. Every single Astartes has gained combat experience, and they show it on the battlefield. *+15 to all Legion rolls.*
[] Daemonsbane – 97.5 million. The estimate for how many machines the Eternal Wardens killed on Gehenna. On average, this means each of the Eternal Wardens killed 1500 daemonic Men of Iron. One of these machines would kill a normal man in seconds. Is it any wonder that daemons fear the XIth Legion? Their hatred of the neverborn girds their souls, their experience battling daemons guides their hands. The Wardens know how to fight daemons, and there is no one in the Imperium better. *+30 to rolls against daemons*
[] Till Death do us Apart – The Wardens know the pain of their brothers dying. In the Senas system on Gehenna Station, brothers watched, helpless, as their closest friends desperately fought and died. The bonds between them have been forged in fire. They will not give up while their brothers live. They will not join the Lost Ones. To do so would be to break these sacred bonds. *+60 to corruption resistance for Wardens*

After the grueling mission, Kesar retired to his quarters where he continued the tradition he had started. He slowly carved names of those that had died into his armor. It took two weeks. When he was done, he tried to distract himself. He began to create an idea on Gellar fields and warp engines. He did so for the better part of the day until he realized he was avoiding his sons. When he came out, he was drained mentally and emotionally. Then, he saw some of his sons wearing armor with the engravings of the Wardens that had died, and the guilt inside him was replaced with pride.

When he exited, he decided to interact with his sons, but after a few hours, he received an urgent message. "Lord Primarch, the Emperor has summoned you."

Immediately, Kesar stood up and dispensed orders. "Set course for the given coordinates. Ensure the fleet has completed its maintenance cycles. Have my honor guard polish their weapons and armor for arrival."

With that, the fleet set course for the shipyards of Jupiter, where the Bucephalus lay. The magnificent battle barge of his Father's gleamed even at distances of thousands of kilometers and several astronomical units from the Sun. Nevertheless, Kesar ordered his arrival to be announced before a simple message was received. "Permission to come aboard requested."

Kesar approved the request and moved to the hanger bay to meet his Father for the second time. There, the Emperor's shuttle landed smoothly, and the Custodes exited, their gleaming armor drawing attention. Then, the Emperor exited the vessel. Regally, he descended from the ship before he stood in front of Kesar. Now, he waited for Kesar to make the first move. To that end, Kesar spoke up, "Father, may I ask what you request of me?"
"YOU HAVE DONE WELL DORLIN. TAKING THAT STATION WAS UNEXPECTED BUT WELCOME. AS SUCH, I BELIEVE THAT I HAVE USE FOR YOUR TALENT." At this, Kesar swelled with pride, as did his honor guard. But then the Emperor continued. "YOUR LEGION WILL NOW TAKE OVER COMPLIANCE OF WORLDS WITH THE TAINT OF DAEMONS."
"Father, I am afraid that my Legion needs time to recover. Moreover, my other brothers will not like my interference into their affairs."
"THAT IS WHY THIS IS NOT A POSITION. THEY WILL NOT COMPLAIN IF YOU ARE GIVEN A JOB THEY DO NOT WANT. THE ETERNAL WARDENS, HOWEVER, WILL DO WELL IN THIS POSITION. I EXPECT YOUR COMPLIANCE RATE TO REMAIN UNTOUCHED." Perhaps Kesar was misunderstanding, but from he could tell, he had new responsibilities.
The Wardens were now responsible for taking over worlds corrupted by daemons. While this was an honor, he was not receiving recognition for this or additional resources. Additionally, he could not divert resources from elsewhere and would need to do more with the same resources. In response to this, Kesar said

Well fuck you too emps.

Fuck you too.

I take it then that if he doesn't care about us then he won't care about us using every and all possible methods to ensure compliance like say asking the Eldar for help, using alien weapons, researching blanks and other things to be better at the horse shit of a job he decided we deserve?

No?

Well fuck him for that too.

Btw what do you think of my pic ???

I think it's great. Love the design of them, especially the teeth and fangs. Sorry for not saying anything about it, I was coming up with rewards for it.

Good way to become more friendly with Vulkan we also finally get to meet Ferrus and having the Mechanicus involved is pretty obvious.

-[x] Ferrus, Vulkan,Pertarubo, General Fabricator of Mars
-[x] Till Death do us Apart – The Wardens know the pain of their brothers dying.
-[x] Father I must request resources and help From the Sister's of Silence. My legion will glady take on this task but we will loose numbers and after several years be unable to fight. I have lost half of my sons just taking this station, tens of thousands taking one planet before. I will do this but require the resources to do so.

@Daemon Hunter how is this
I suggest you also include mention of texts on daemon slaying and force weapons. Emperor created nemesis weapons, why not ask just that?

I like the plan but I'd rather have a battlestation

[x] Plan battlestation
-[X] Turn Gehenna Station into a Flagship (+50 to void warfare when present)
