That brings up what you consider to be AI versus a regular drone capable of fighting. At what point does it become a person rather than a very clever machine, Monster versus Person, etc.
Well I would consider AI to be a person like machine who can thank for itself and change its code kind of like the geth from Mass effect. The AIs can think beyond what they are programmed to think about like they can do more jobs than what their program for. Also they can learn. I think virtual intelligence or a VI is for like clever machines but they can't think beyond their parameters.

I mean making them physically unable to do so.
Simple solution: Make self replication require a particular resource(eg element/alloy/parts). That way, even if the relevant drones go rouge, they can not expand beyond a known limit.

EDIT: This allows for rapid expansion but not unlimited growth.
I would recommend the bottle neck be electronics feedstock (semiconductor grade silicon, phosphorus, and boron) and/or some vital composites.

self replication is a bad idea no matter what. the only way to keep it from going wrong is making it so that the thing can not do it at all in the first place.

anyway any tech that allows self replication would be more efficient in a factory anyway which feeds back into our industrial advantage. imagine building Project Zero dawn Cauldron into a Castle Brian type facility.

anyway any tech that allows self replication would be more efficient in a factory anyway
For the sorts of things we would do with it, yes. The whole point of self replication is that it allows for larger deployments, such as in terraforming, where bringing each unit in from an offsite facility would be unfeasible due to scale.

As a somewhat mundane example, using chemosynthetic algae to alter a bodies atmosphere instead of building facilities to run the same reactions.

Or adaptability. Who says that self replication has to be autonomous or limited to only one thing?

*waggles hand*

I am reasonably sure that the mutation they underwent also included circumventing exactly that system.

Under that logic

Any and all idea and inprovements can be dismissed under theorical worst case scenario catastrophic failures

Is fine to be cautious but to actively disregard any and all possible advantage out of doom "what if" is silly

Are self replicating robotics a possible threath?

Sure as hell

But just as with any tech

Nuclear energy can irradiate entire continents if a failure happens

Chemical manufacturing and storaging can blow up entire city blocks (beirut as a example of this)

Biological experimentation can lead to major ecological disasters or epidemics or even worse, pandemics

Use of advance digital tech leave open vectors foe cyberwarfare or criplling a nation defenses if somethings fucks the software or hardware widespread

Do we return to primitive analog life style because of this "worst case scenario" possible outcomes?

Im not saying we shouldnt take care of security measures or give it time before we do said research

But lets not dismiss tech options for the sake of it

If the option exist on the tech tree it means is a viable tech not a trap
and as with any new tech it has its own set of advantanges, weak points and need for invesment to counter said possible issues

But if taken responsably is a boon rather than a issue

Except self replication ability without control is the worst possible outcome for this tech and one that is reasonable ble to be done. It is also not needed at all so there is no reason to add it.

First no Nuclear Energy can not do that even during a meltdown. Because a melt down is designed to seal the danger away because of a failure. The only example of this failure with Nuclear power is literally because they intentionally ignored and didn't build to the safety standards.

Chemical manufacturing and storage is again very safe and the only times it fails is either outside factors or because they ignored safety in the first place.

Bio Experiments are not that wide spread in their danger unless you are intentionally trying to create something to do that. So it isn't a accident if it happens.

Digital tech only leaves an opening if people are not paying attention when they make it. And because even the most connected systems are still separated and protected individually it is next to impossible to use cyberwarfare to take it out all at once and the only way to damage hardware is by physical access and at that point, you have fucked up anyways.

Swarm robotic is essentially letting the robots act on their own with the ablilty to adapt and change. That is a very bad idea no matter what safeguards you add to the software. The only way to keep them is by making them physically unable to do the tasks. The last thing we want is to create any form of AI that can actually think. Swarm is a bad idea unless we are in a position where we need it. But we aren't and I do not see much that would make it needed. Tactical robots and robotic workers are a better and far safer route to take as those aren't built to be thinking or to adapt and change, unlike the swarm.

you know one thing about that swarm intelligence we could just leave it in a system and test it if it was safe or not because they don't have FtL unless they figure out how to build Ftl.

Look advent

Im not gonna spent 6+ pages arguing with you as other have done before over other topics in a dog figth/dick measuring contest of arguments

The tech exists in the tech tree as a viable option doubt the QM would give us a tech that would absolutely withouth shadow of a doubt turn bad no matter what we do as you seem to doom-predict

If the QM openly tell us or suggest this,or you have insider info that proves otherwise (the QM telling you plot hooks or something like that) i am perfectly willing to accept your input

But unless thats the case
Im not gonna deny that there is a risk involved
But i dont buy the narrative of the worst case scenario as being the most likely outcome

If you dont see that way
Thats fine

Guys, their is a middle ground option: limit swarm intelligence to a tactical scale. A squad or platoon of spectre robotic infantry would networked together but they would get their orders from humans at the company or battalion level both to prevent order overreach and to avoid E war set up from scrambling all our automated forces.

Another way to keep them out of trouble would be to limit them to AP mounts for their weapons. Have our human infantry be better armed and able to resisit them if we have to send troops after them.

That too. Again, the real role for swarm robotics is not to create massive armies, it's to force multiply. Anywhere where there is a need for a light force , remote, or even ISR in denied areas(eg we need something expendable), swarm robotics are useful. However, the main force will still be controlled by humans.
Also, who says that one must strongly link swarm robotics and self replication together. Sure, that might be the most efficient(and also dangerous) combination but said combination is not necessary for all scenarios.
Remember, we are not creating AGI, Seed AIs, or ASI here. We are more looking at things like DARPA's Collaborative Operations In Denied Environments than truly dangerous(eg Pharo swarm) AI.

Except I didn't say it was the only option. I said it is a highly likely option to happen because that is the way the tech works. If you want to use it you need to hard limit the hell out of it. I am also talking about self-replication in a swarm dude not so much the smarm itself. That is the stupid idea to do. I also said that swarms aren't needed because they wouldn't provide much advantage to us when Tactical Robots and Robot Workers would have a much higher impact for us.

Why would we build a different design though? The Union we have in large numbers it is well known and built. So building a upgraded version is both cheaper and faster and can be used and built by everyone. Also We are not removing the jump extenders, or the docking ability as they need those in order to be carried even by our ships. We travel through the same realm as the K-F Drive which is why the collars were able to be created for our use in the first place and is why all the new ships have jump collars.

Well, I am just thinking aloud, but the issue here is that we need a small scale transport for invasion purposes, in the scenario where ground to orbit fire and/or for a contested air superiority.
So we need something cheap-ish. getting rid of the docking capability and endurance options might be possible here, they need to be good enough but also expendable enough and while unions aren't particularly expensive, as far as dropships go, they do cost a pretty penny and they are optimized in ways we might not be interested in.
At the very least we would need a Union variant, but a smaller, company scale invader, carried internally in a larger troopship could be a viable option (since we are cutting endurance and a lot of the odds and ends to make them smaller and cheaper in this scenario)

Admittedly, it does presuppose the resurgence of capital grade weapons in planetary emplacements, which weren't much a thing outside of the Star League and only in Hegemony systems, but as mentioned a capital missile should be well within the capabilities of the successor states.

So ultimately we could do with just a homegrown Union variant, but we should consider a more comprehensive troopship/lander combo options for latter on

So something a bit more like Liberty ships or the amphibious landing craft on D-day?

One the entire point of the dropships is because they are just better at moving troops and equipment than the dropshuttles which is what you are suggesting. The Troopship is a corvette that is built with the express purpose of landing and deploying an entire regiment. All Dropships are for is as a first wave deployment to secure a landing area for operations to be conducted from and to move units rapidly when needed in a campiagn. The last thing you want is to make your troopships and transports expendable because they are meant to protect the units assigned.

it is not about making them expendable, if anything it is to make them more survivable, but keep in mind the use we will give them, they will suffer losses, specially in contested scenarios. it all starts from there, seeing all the endurance options of the union, strip those, and use the savings for a more survivable, and hopefully cheaper platform.
Mind, the storage areas of the union are tiny and should be considerable bigger for the uses the IS gives it, but that is another matter.

So, reducing the per unit cost vis a vis a Union while increasing survival should be possible, reduce mass, fuel tanks, crew areas and what not. hence why a lander based off a capital ship could be more useful than a union itself.
Yes we do need to come up with a troopship but, again, with this system, the troopship would never be in close proximity to the planet or wouldn't be on in atmo in the early stages of the invasion, it would provide support for the invasion forces and deploy the shuttles with the beachead companies

So my plan didn't win. I'm actually okay with this since i wasn't engaging anyone dispite how hard it was for me. I've basically detoxed since I made those emotional posts.

So I will explain some parts of my plan.

-[X] Weaken Economy (Pact) [Easy]: By utilizing agents seeded throughout Caliban, we can weaken the economies of target by debasing their currencies with forgeries.
This part was a basic destroy the economy and make it so the Pact couldn't wage war cause they couldn't reliably pay their troops I felt this was the safest Option with less potential for blow back on the HR. After all if their money not trusted who's going to accept being payed in it?

The Helghan Survey said it before we're just kicking the can on that and want to head that off before all of sudden "Oh that should have been done awhile ago."

-[X] Raise an Army: Task your military with forming an additional army. [Can be taken multiple times in a turn so long as there is recruitable population remaining]

With raising an Army um at first It doesn't look like it but when I started putting the small pieces together I realized our military is starting to be stretched thin between our commitments and growth.

-[X] Contact the inhabitants of New Oslo
With this I mean there as close to our borders as caliban and the sooner we bring them into the fold if possible the better also I'm sure the QM would love less border gore since we're starting to colonize Charybdis this turn. Also probably head off another Caliban situation before it develops.

Now onto the vehicle I will admit spite and stubborness is part of why I stuck with the Leo and Matriarch. But I'm going to go with the Leo first before I talk about he Matriarch.

With the Leo is it better then the Lynx? No but it isn't worse then the Lynx it has it's advantages and disadvantages it's an option for a commander to use where maybe a Lynx isn't suited. There's also the Economic reason and I'm not talking about the price compared to the Lynx . I'm talking about the fact that the Leo and Lobo (which I'm going to talk about in a minute) where designed to be exports for milita units. Well right now our biggest buyers are Aurigans and now Rockwellawan. But If you look at history and even in battletech the exported vehicles and weapons used most? Either they where a built to the end users wants or they are in or where in use by the originators country.

So my plan is with the Leo and the Lobo (which with the Lobo it would make a good Calvary or Mechanized Vehicle) is that our adoption of them will boost sales because potential buyers look and see us use them and go "well they have them, their using them, they confident in them and their willing to sell us some it looks to be legit let's but some." it's simply looking at how historically how purchasing things goes. If the seller has enough confidence in the item they are selling they use it and you can tell that makes you more likely to buy that item.

So the Matriarch... I finally remembered what it was for it's suppose to engage mechs. They question is that even though mechs are a thing it's mostly conventual armies even in battletech. Well what happens when a mech hit's those conventual units and you're mechs arn't around or too far away to get there in time to prevent large amount of damage? Well that's where the Matriarch comes in it's suppose to be enough of a threat that when it engages a mech the mech has to focus on it. It has the speed that while it might not out run a mech it makes it hard to be hit and maximizes the time it can do damage with all the weapons being in the turret it always has maximum firepower concentrated on the mech. This combined with the fact that well it's not going to be alone or the only one it's going to be 1 of 4 Matriarchs or part of a conventual force all Focusing on a mech or lance of mechs. On it's own a Matriarch is dangerous to a mech but not "holy shit it's a demolisher sitting on my foot" Dangerous but when it's more then one or has back up it's enough of force multiplier that it could be respected like the big three Mech Killers.
