if we run off to Winterfell without a sworn shield.
Yeah, there's, definitely some potential problems that could arise from going off on our own without our sworn shield, even aside from any actual threat to our safety. Going off alone with Gwayne or Steffon could raise concerns about our chastity if anyone dared to raise them, since we wouldn't have a chaperone. Rhea's, *probably* safer from that sort of rumor mongering, but there's probably still some whispers that have been emboldened by us crowning Alicent to make some comments. Probably less of an issue than the other two admittedly. And then we're just, in Winterfell and then the wall without an actual escort? Hm.

I doubt it'll be a significant issue, and it doesn't look like anyone really wants to force Tarly to come along, but it's probably gonna be another avenue for people we've pissed off to spread rumors.

In general, can we stop focusing on Rhea and Gwayne who we have invested multiple actions in and are sufficiently strong allies to have many more chances of spending time with, and actually follow through on a plan we made? For once?
Gwayne is only a Hesitant Ally yet, and our recent actions put that status in considerable peril (though nowhere near as much as if we'd gone with the Romantic option last vote). On the other hand, we have the opportunity on dragonback to have an in-depth and completely private talk about those selfsame actions and their consequences for everyone involved.

People are always gonna spread rumours, our very existence is offensive to some people, we shouldn't try to limit ourselves from doing things that are beneficial to us cause people might talk.

Heck, even in the first episode of HOTD even Alicent and Rhaenyra aren't above some gossip.

In the words of our Father himself, "Tongues won't change the succession, let them wag."

Gwayne, at least, would supposedly
act as your temporary shield for a time.
...which I would expect to involve a similar oath albeit for a much shorter duration of service. It wouldn't eliminate rumours, but it might cut down on them a bit, since questioning not just our honour but also the honour of a Hightower does mean whoever's doing said questioning will have earned an additional- and rather less pathologically passive- enemy than just the royals under Viserys.

Also, it would almost definitely satisfy Viserys with regards to our safety.

The Apocrypha already showed us what happens when we make choices without thinking the perception of them through. Lets not go off alone with a man or woman of 'vile' persuasion. If others were around I'd vote Hightower or Redfort but being without a chaperone will tarnish our reputation.

Agree I'm a little meh with going all in on Arryn heritage

[X] [Travel] Steffon Redfort

you know what? Mood.

er Raylon handled acquiring the prize money and handling the remaining ransoms for you. Apparently Cole's whole attitude had changed drastically from you match. He seething with barely contained anger and contempt the entire time he spoke with Raylon and nearly refused to buy back his armor at one point. Peake was apparently even worse. Ser Raylon refused to go into details but apparently Unwin had said some things so vile that the two men very nearly came to blows
Also ssiigghh imagine being part of a extremely martial, honor bound culture with strong dueling tradition and acceptance of violence as a problem solver and having all the problems without being able to do the Cool Fun parts of actually smacking everyone who talks mad shit.

A conversation that can wait until later. Gwayne is still already an ally hesitant or not, and isn't going anywhere. Our entire plan of securing Steffon as one hinges on our ability to limit opposition for him becoming a commander from the queen by establishing reasons to give him the position besides a favor to Jeyne, and the longer we go without doing so the more scrutiny such a justification will be under. Let's not be caught missing the forest for the trees.

And so the most epic rivalry the Seven Kingdoms shall ever know begins:
You have earned the Hatred of House Peake.
The feeling is mutual.

Two championship fighters, having beaten all other oncomers in order to battle the only one worthy to be their match. On one side a determined youth who proved themselves before those who would have denied someone worthy simply because of what they were born as, a Peake. On the other side, Rhaenyra.

The game, gentlefolk, is on:

I prefer those two titles, and not only is going with Tarly the best option to avoid scandal, I like our future Lord Commander of the Queensguard

It's worth noting that basically everyone around Alicent knew she had gay feelings for Rhaenyra in the show to the point where her own children make reference to it, and it's not treated as a huge deal. Rumors are unavoidable but there's a difference between rumors and rumors thay anyone takes seriously.

To be fair that was probably written as a deliberate irony on how Viserys later starts cutting off tongues who he feels made statements threatening the succession at the tail end of his reign.
To be fair there's a big difference between Boremund telling his niece "Yeah I think you should have been queen" compared to direct implications that Rhaenyra's kids are illegimate.

I was talking in a Doylist sense. Viserys cutting off tongues over the accusations against his grandchildren is from the books, but AFAIK that particular line is show only, and seems very likely to have been written in order to create a deliberate sense of irony later on when Viserys starts detonguing over them threatening the succession with their talk people given the myriad different ways in which Viserys could have phrased that statement instead.

Arryn ties are good, but Rhaenyra is a Targaryen.
Eh, I guess.

But Dragon Knight is well, such a clichee.
Couldn't be less subtle about it.

Just has dragon, is knight, therefore dragon knight.
Even though well, the dragon didn't even show up for the tourney.

It feels a bit forced?

It's presumably going to be harder for our father to deny us knighthood when people around us are constantly calling us a knight already.

Yeah being knighted by Manderly himself was not an option, knighting Rhaenyra is simply too big a deal for anyone to feel comfort doing it instead of Viserys
This is what I have always suspected, our knighthood necessarily has to come from Viserys, who would not act on anything less than a famous battlefield victory.

the falcon nickname probably antagonizes the homophobic queen without too much good cause.
