It might make for a nice "creature" to give away. As a standalone power, it's not great but maybe as a support for a fragile Hero. We'll see. I'm open to suggestions.

I'm not against it being given away, but as a VS player I should mention the Laurel is potentially able to take hits from Scion's Stilling beam.

On the VS side of things, my confidence in this assessment comes from the various enemies in the game being unable to bypass its invulnerability, and these range from Skeletons and Werewolves to Eldritch Creatures and Fallen Angels. Not even The Director can do so as he has to drag the White Hand onto the player to remove their revives near the end of the fight with him in Eudaimonia Machine. The White Hand is a creature specifically made to bypass both the Infinite Corridor and the Crimson Shroud by the dev team, because during the early days people were using the Laurel and Clock Lancet to kill Reapers indefinitely causing almost unending runs, and it remains the only creature that can do so.

On the Worm side of things, the Laurel is very similar to Glory Girls shield in some respects, a person whose power was stated to be able to take a hit from Scion. While the shields themselves are different, rather than her powers aura or the strength enhancement it gives her, the Laurel provides a window of invulnerability after taking a hit. Though it takes much longer than a few seconds to recharge like Glory Girls shield does, the Laurel can grow to hold three charges at one time and eventually be able to cap any damage that gets through by a significant margin as the Crimson Shroud. To return to the comparison, both shields work by breaking after taking any kind of hit, for Glory Girl sustained fire from a laser beam would count as one hit with bullets counting as individual attacks, whereas the Laurel would break on first contact with said laser beam, making it potentially able to take hits from the Stilling, but risky if Scion keeps the beam on you for too long.

What do you guys think of my work, was anything I said off from what their wikis provided, or do you have a different perspective on things?

Is that a plant? Can it be grown?
It is a plant. But no I'll say it cannot be grown.

Excellent work. I play VS too, and I know that the shroud is broken. But that's in part from the supporting items, notably those that reduce cooldown and prolong duration.
The comparison with Glory Girl's shield is apt.

That said I still think that giving it away is a good idea. Alex had plenty of defensive abilities and power. Simuroc invulnerability, Adaptive Immunity,
Sustained Immortality, Haki, etc... and that's just off the top of my head. So it would be a bit redundant.

But I'm not sure who would be the best fit. It needs to be someone important enough to warrant such protection but vulnerable enough that they need it. Maybe Flechette if Alex discovers the importance of Sting?

Not a bad option...

Hey a question @zagan but what would happen if we tried to give dragon a partner?

What Powers would compliment the Laurel if given away? Given how it works I would guess either Greater Companion or Summoning 3/day work best. But if this is a growing Partner, as seems to be suggested, then it is tempting to pick Accelerated Training, not because it would theoretically produce Crimson Shroud faster but because it removes the "level cap" for any and all Summons. I am not sure if that will work in this case, or how it manifests.

Oh, and Sustained Immortality adds another layer of redundancy, if anyone cares.

I'm not sure what you mean.
It's definitively possible, I would judge that she has a soul so she can receive one.
She'll be able to summon near any computer or suit she's currently inhabiting. But if she switches too far from it it'll disappear)
And some supporting powers may not work or work weirdly with her unique nature.

Greater Companion isn't very useful. The user would just summon it and put it on their head, it would stay there for the whole time. And if they don't need it they can just put it in a pocket.
3/day might be nice if they want to equip allies.
Accelerate training is a very good idea, however. I wouldn't have considered that one.

You'll notice that this chapter is unusually short. You'll understand why when you reach the end. I hesitated but cutting it there was just too perfect.
It does mean that the Laurel isn't included but I'll put it in the next chapter.

Friday, 05/20/2011 (10 AM)

Legend guides me toward another room, not far from his office. It was set up as a basic conference room. A long table in the middle, chairs all around it, a projector on the ceiling, and a white screen on the wall opposite the door. The only things of note, apart from the other members of the Triumvirate already present, were a number of TV screens, flat or old cathodic ones, and also some polaroids.

Of course, the bulk of my attention was firmly focused on the aforementioned Parahumans, as impressive as ever in their full costume.

Eidolon greeted me with a smile while Alexandria only gave me a curt nod.

After a short exchange of greetings, Legend gestured toward the piles of electronics on the table.

"As requested, a selection of TVs and cameras have been prepared. It's your show."

"Thank you." I licked my lips considering how I should word this. "Hm… Yes, I've gained an ability that allows me to generate real-time images, as photos or as videos, of any specific being or location that I can conceptualize at the cost of destroying in short order the medium used to produce the image. Hence the devices I asked for."

"I see. A very potent Thinker power indeed. Any limitations? Distance? Knowledge of the target perhaps?" Alexandria's tone was clinical as she spoke.

"Distance not really, not on Earth anyway." I recalled Legend's question from earlier and amended my words. "Peering into pocket spaces or other Dimensions, like Earth Aleph may give less precise results or fail altogether, however. I haven't tried but it may only show the entrance of the pocket space or the equivalent location on our own planet for example."

They all nodded in unison at that.

"As for knowledge limitation, not really either. A name, even a Cape name, or just a description of the target should be enough. Only something extremely generic would prevent me from targeting it. In the case of Nilbog, I have his name and I memorized his whole file. It'll be plenty."

"Then proceed. Our Thinkers haven't been able to give us much so far." I noted that despite the fact we were on Legend's home turf, it was Alexandria who was giving orders.

I summoned Hermit Purple, the purple vines sprouting from my hands.

"Hn. I didn't expect that. I supposed that those vines are a conduit for this power?"

I blinked at Eidolon's exclamation. "You can see them?" I gesture with the vines in the air. I saw him track the movement with his eyes.

"Shouldn't I?"

I saw Legend and Alexandria exchange interrogative glances. "I can't see anything." Alexandria said. And Legend nodded in confirmation.

"Well, only people that have Projection-like power can normally see Hermit Purple."

"Strange, I don't have any power of the sort currently slotted in." He paused. "In fact, I don't think I ever used any." He looks thoughtful at that. I heard him muttering under his breath. "Not my style. But it could make for a nice change of pace."

"I'm sure you have one or two tucked away somewhere among your list of available powers and it's enough to count. Or maybe it's just your general Trumpiness."

"While that's all very interesting we're not here to discuss the intricacy of power interaction between you two." Alexandria's interruption was on point.

I nodded firmly. "You're right. I'll start with just a photo so we can have some context of Nilbog's situation. At least we'll know if he's still alive."

There was no objection to that so I proceeded. While focusing on the Biotinker I struck a camera with a classic Karate Chop, breaking it in half and ejecting a photo.

I grabbed it and put it on the table so we could all see it. What the photo showed was the image of a short pot bellied man with a receding hairline and sickly skin tone. The man was currently reclining on something vaguely resembling a dentist's chair. The photo appeared as if the non-existent camera that took it was stuck to the ceiling so it didn't reveal much of his surroundings. To his left, halfway out of the picture, we could see half of a metallic tray on a table with two syringes in it. The floor was covered in dirt brown tiles, the majority of which had cracks on them. This didn't help much in narrowing down his position.

The most worrying thing was the placenta-like sac hanging from his right hand. We couldn't determine what it contained from this angle.

Looking at this still image, we couldn't be sure but Nilbog didn't look to be in his right mind. Not unconscious but not there either. His eyes were halfway closed and his mouth was partially open, showing yellowed teeth. Incidentally, he didn't appear to be restrained or tied to the chair.

Collectively we took a step back from the table and exchanged looks.

Once again it was Alexandria who spoke first. "That confirms that he's alive. But that doesn't give us much to go on." She gave me a sharp look. "Can you give us more?"

"Of course."

I turned my attention toward one of the TV screens. It wasn't plugged in but it didn't matter. I deployed Hermit Purple, grabbing it with the vines and cracking the plastic casing. Focusing on Nilbog once again the screen flickered to life.

This time we had a much better angle to see around Nilbog. What I saw chilled me to the bones. I heard a muttered, My God, coming from Legend.

Behind Nilbog's chair was a row of glass cylinders filled with yellowish liquid and floating inside were various creatures. Worse, those shapes reminded me of some of my partners. A deformed Buoy to the right looked to be in pain. A stretched Olky in the middle with a tortured expression on its face. Or a cancer-ridden Aylamon to the left.

An ugly mixture of rage, disgust, and sorrow surges through me. I had to suppress the bile rising in my guts.

But that wasn't the worst of it. No, as bad as this was, the worst part was the far too recognizable figures of a little blonde girl wearing a blood-splattered lab coat who was humming under her breath as she vivisected a humanoid figure on a table.

Bonesaw.

The Nines had Nilbog.

And there we go. I'm sure most of you guessed it but maybe I managed to surprise a few people. The Nine. An unavoidable step when writing Worms fic.
To preempt a question, yes the Copyright power prevents the making of copies of CM creatures. But it doesn't stop anyone from making facsimiles.

For the roll, 130 (Banked) + 120 (Chapter) + 0 (Excess words) = 250 points.

Well.... Time to deploy our resident "Everyone's Grudge".

That ability should do NASTY things to them.

Does this mean that every time Bonesaw got close to actually copying Compendium's Partners the organism would spontaneously collapse into goo? How close can one get to cloning said creatures before Copyright kicks in?

Also, I expect Jack will suddenly receive a "gut feeling" now that the Triumvirate have seen Nilbog with Bonesaw. His Shard does spy on Eden Capes correct?

Copyright would kick in if she somehow managed to get her hand on genetic materials from a partner and tried to use that to grow a clone. It would fail every time. But if she takes body parts from multiple animals and/or humans to cobble together something that looks like a partner Copyright wouldn't kick in at all.

In other settings, magical ones notably, if someone uses magic to try and create a clone of a creature the spell/ritual would just fizzle out. Even if the spell/ritual doesn't require any part of the original.

Another good example would be Star Trek. A teleporter malfunction couldn't create a copy of a creature either.

Broadcast is going to have to work overtime to have the Triumvirate explain why we shouldn't nuke the location from orbit, since we have no reason not to think to do so, and they can't tell us not to use an AoE attack to spare Manton. So, Tailed Beast Ball time?

Well on the bright side it's a bunch more creatures for us to claim.
Also, I expect Jack will suddenly receive a "gut feeling" now that the Triumvirate have seen Nilbog with Bonesaw. His Shard does spy on Eden Capes correct?
I don't think it actively spies on them so much as it keeps an ear out for anyone planning to kill Jack.

Thankfully Broadcast can only give people incredibly subtle nudges and it can do absolutely nothing to stop Alex, hell it's theoretically possible, if admittedly unlikely, that if it tries all that would end up happening is that it would establish a connection with Solar, who would pretend to do what it said but in reality spill the beans on what it's up to.

@jonasquinn
I was under the impression that Broadcast was abusing its position as head communication Shard to effectively order every other Shard to report back to it should their Hosts come across a means of attacking or even just inconveniencing Jack. Is that not how it works? You're absolutely right about Alex being able to hard-counter that nonsense though; my main concern is that Jack Slash will book it the moment he realizes they found him.

Also, I thought Broadcast could do overt, it just avoids it unless Jack is in serious danger. Isn't there something about it interfering with other Parahuman powers when they're around Jack? Manifestations are less reflexive, Thinker powers are simply wrong, that sort of thing?

I may be wrong but I don't think it's quite to that level, if Broadcast started nudging Jack every time a potential, possible threat popped up he'd never stand still. More likely IMO it keeps track of the various parahumans that could be threats and has their shards subtly encourage them to stay away from Jack and it's only once one is actively planning to attack Jack that it bothers with more direct interference.
You're absolutely right about Alex being able to hard-counter that nonsense though; my main concern is that Jack Slash will book it the moment he realizes they found him.
I doubt it, considering that Alex is the only powered individual on Bet that Broadcast straight up cannot influence yet the Nine are still very clearly planning either a direct attack on him or some scheme to damage his reputation, which would inevitably draw his attention, it seems to me that one of three things is happening:

1) Broadcast's own curiosity is causing it to throw caution to the wind for once and allowing Jack to risk himself against this entirely new threat for the sweet juicy data.

2) Broadcast is trying to get Jack to not target Alex but for whatever reason is failing. Possibly because for all it's power it can't really force anyone to do anything especially when most of the Nine, including Jack, want to do that thing. It isn't infallible after all, Jack specifically only thought he could control one Grey Boy clone and despite what some people tout as far as I can tell Wildbow only ever said that he could arguably beat Contessa.

3) Broadcast has been tricked into thinking that it can influence Alex. When it tries to connect to his Shard, it instead reaches Solar who spoofs doing all the things that are expected of it.

Either way, if Broadcast we're going to convince Jack to scrap this plan it would have done so already.
Also, I thought Broadcast could do overt, it just avoids it unless Jack is in serious danger. Isn't there something about it interfering with other Parahuman powers when they're around Jack? Manifestations are less reflexive, Thinker powers are simply wrong, that sort of thing?
Yes that is true but even that is relatively subtle, it's intentionally the sort of thing that the parahuman in question could easily dismiss as bad luck. I more mean that Broadcast can't do things like actively forcing someone not to do something that no amount of subtle manipulation would convince them not to and it absolutely cannot directly communicate threats to Jack himself.

That's an interesting result. This vote is mostly to choose the Theme itself, not the powers. They're also the option of rejecting Explosive Finish if you want to conserve points or even the Bonus Theme itself if you think we have enough.

You won't get to vote for the power itself. Instead, you'll get to vote for the theme directly, because it's the only thing we can afford.
Or you can vote to reject the theme

Details:
-Bonus Theme: You gain a new theme of your choice.
You can gain this benefit any number of times.
You can immediately reroll.

Anatomy
This theme makes your creatures appear like anatomical models, removing their skin and exposing their organs to the world. This can also include illusory text that indicates the name of various body parts. (Credit: chinlamp)Seeing your creature's exposed organs induces feelings of disgust in other beings, they are reluctant to look at your creature and have a tendency to focus on other things instead.
This applies even to those normally accustomed to such sights, like doctors or forensic surgeons.
Angel
Your creature gains angelic features. This can mean white wings, a halo, a white/gold/silver aura, glowing skin, silver or golden eyes, etc. When your creatures die or are unsummoned, they leave behind a blessed zone, equal in diameter to their size plus one meter. Any ally that stands in that zone finds themselves slightly faster, tougher, and able to endure longer, equal to about a 5% increase on their base stats. This effect does not stack with itself.
Balloon
The balloon theme transforms your creature to make them look as if they are made out of balloons, akin to balloon animals made by performers for parties, etc. (Credit: Omnimercurial)Gravity is lighter for those with this theme, as if Helium-filled Balloons, give a Moon-like Leap and Fall effect, giving higher and longer jumps with extended air time.
Cloth
Your creatures appear to be made of various types of cloth and textile. It could be, cotton, nylon, silk, wool, etc... But it can also include buttons, zippers, belts, knots, or any other such things.Your creature gains a 50% resistance to bludgeoning damage
Costume
Your creatures look like empty costumes of themselves that move on their own. This can range from fully realistic costumes, to even animatronic, but can also resemble themed park mascots or even muppets. In all cases, your creatures cannot be mistaken for normal beings, the difference is made obvious by gaps in the costume, overlapping fabric, or badly hidden articulation.
(Credit: Doccer)
Your creatures can be opened and their interior is hollow. Items or beings can be put inside and are protected from attack while inside. Should the creature be unsummoned while it contains something it is left behind. If you possess the Free Modification power you cannot dismiss this theme as long as the creature contains something.
Demon
Your creature gains demonic features. This can mean red skin, horns, bat wings, spade tails, flaming eyes, etc. When your creatures die or are unsummoned, they leave behind a cursed zone, equal in diameter to their size plus one meter. Any enemy that stands in that zone finds themselves slightly slower, weaker and runs out of stamina faster, equal to about a 5% decrease in their base stats. This effect does not stack with itself.
Drawing
Your creatures appear as if drawn in the air. They appear two-dimensional from any angle but in true remain, three-dimensional creatures, and on touch possess a texture in accord with their look. The type of drawing can vary from cartoon to painting but also graffiti or charcoal drawing.Your creatures can become two-dimensional to move along a solid flat surface. They are still subject to gravity in that state.
Earth
Your creatures look like they are made of the ground beneath you. Be that looking like a pile of dirt and rock come to life in the rough shape of the creature, like a sculpture made of unfired clay, or even as though the asphalt and sidewalk of a road got up and decided to walk away. They are not made of such, simply appearing to be, nor can they manipulate the earth in any way. When your creature walks on the ground it creates tremors that can destabilize creatures smaller than it within a radius equal to twice its size.
Feather
Feathers and other bird features cover your creatures, replacing fur or any other body covering. This may also include vestigial wings, bird-like claws, or even a beak.Your creatures gain the ability to slowly glide in the air. If a creature already could fly, it gains a 10% boost of its speed.
Fire
Your creatures look like they are made of flames, in whatever color you choose. They can be a fully solid inferno of fire, an empty shell of flame, or even barely there, only the outlines and contours of their body are made of flame, while the rest is just a haze of shimmering heat. This look is just that, however, a look, as they are still fully solid and not made of fire. They do not burn, nor are they even hot to the touch beyond what is normal for their species. They cannot manipulate fire in any way.Your creature's natural weapon and handheld weapon are surrounded by fiery energy that deals additional damage when they land an attack and leave persistent burns.
Forcefield
Your creatures are made of forcefields. Either one with a complex shape, or multiple small ones. They can be of any color but blue and green are the most common and they are semi-transparent.Your creature can freely ignore any forcefield that could hinder them.
Glass
Your creatures become transparent like glass. This does not make them invisible. The glass quality can vary, can include mirror-like effects, stain glass, or even crystal effects.Your creatures become immune to all light-based attacks, any such attack passes right through them. Any such attack can still damage their environment after passing through.
Ice
Your creatures look like ice sculptures of themselves, quality of sculpting, and clarity of ice decided when summoned. They still move and act as normal.Your creatures are lighter and faster, able to slip and slide around as they move. This comes at the cost of hitting slightly less hard due to reduced weight.
Machine
Metal and plastic are now the main components of your creatures. They look like robots, clockwork toys, or even vehicles. They can have gear, pistons, doors, or even wheels.Your creatures become immune to all poison and diseases. They also no longer need to breathe.
Mystic
This theme gives your creatures a magical flair. This includes mystical tattoos, ioun stone floating around them, embedded gems in their body, amulets around their neck, glowing lines under their skin, etc...Your creatures gain a 5% bonus to the effectiveness of their magical power, this includes damage, healing, benefits granted, and difficulty to resist.
Oiled
With this theme, your creatures appear fatter, maybe even excessively so, and covered in a sheen of oil. This can be sunblock, body lotion, engine oil, etc. (Credit: Omnimercurial)Your creatures became extremely slippery, this makes grappling them considerably harder, but not impossible. This may also permit them to slid upon flat surfaces.
Paper
With this theme, your creature appears as if made of paper. Origami is the most obvious, but a mass of confetti is possible, stacks of cut paper, or even multiple cardboard boxes. The type of paper and the color can vary too, glossy, vellum, gift wrapping, postcard even paper money.Your creatures can absorb loose paper to regain health.
Screen Time
This theme is very varied it gives your creatures the appearance of coming out of the TV screen. It includes movie special effects as if incrusted on a green screen, stop-motion, or black and white movie. But also video game looks such as pixel art, Minecraft cube, vire frame or PS1 3D. In all cases, your creatures look wrong and can't pass for normal.Your creatures became more image than real, they have a 50% chance to ignore any physical attack, passing right through them.
Shadow
This theme makes your creatures appear as solids masses of shadow and darkness. They lose nearly all defining features except for their basic body shape. Their eyes, teeth, and claws may be the only thing not made of shadow, purple eyes, pure white teeth, or red claws are good examples.Your creatures can see no matter the level of light, in perfect darkness, they simply see in shades of black and white. This does not allow them to see through opaque objects.
Statue
The appearance of your creature mimics stone statues, be it marble, granite, clay, porcelain, or obsidian. This is different from the earth theme because it represents worked stone, with chisel marks, ornaments, or symbols. When you creatures stand motionless they appear as inanimate objects even if people have seen them move before, and they ignore their presence
Stretched
This theme modifies the apparent proportion of your creatures. Their limb and body are stretched out or deformed. It can be limbs much too tin, a compressed head, or the torso twisted into a spiral. This is similar to the effect produced by a funhouse mirror. But like all themes, this is only cosmetic, and your creatures a perfectly fine. (Credit: chinlamp)Your creatures can stretch their limbs up to twice their own size to strike from afar. They can compress themselves to reduce their profile, but they can't maintain that for more than 1 minute at a time.
Swarm
This theme makes your creatures look like a swarm or insects and vermin Tide, a flock of bats or birds, or a school of Fish if in or under Water. (Credit: Omnimercurial)Your creature gains a 50% resistance to piercing and slashing damage
Toy
With this theme, your creatures appear as if they were toys. This can mean plastic soldiers with big ball joints, plushy with button eyes, wooden puppets with leftover strings attached, or even remote-controlled cars with a big antenna.Your creatures emit an aura that makes them look less dangerous. This is not absolute and seeing them commit destructive action could overcome that effect.
Undead
This theme appears to transform your creatures into undead. Walking skeletons, stumbling zombies, terrifying mummies, or ghosts (but they still are solid unless naturally intangible). This can also be more subtle with simply pale skin, sunken eyes, and disturbing odor. When your creatures deal damage to a living creature by touching them with any part of their body they regenerate health for as much damage dealt.
Uniform
This theme gives your creatures a uniform. Whether this uniform is military, emergency, or civilian-based is up to you at the time of summoning, as is whether the uniform is generic from Earth or matches with the specific world you're in. (Credit: chinlamp)People who see your creatures assume they belong to the profession of the uniform they are wearing and treat them as such. A dog with a stethoscope and scrubs will be assumed to be a doctor, for example. This does not stop people from thinking of the creatures as enemies, or even attacking them, nor does it stop them from recognizing them as non-humans, but they see the uniform first and foremost, before the fact that it isn't a human underneath.
Warrior
With this theme, your creatures take on the appearance of hardened warriors. This includes bulging muscles, scars all over their bodies, leather belts, or even (non-functional) ammunition belts. Aggressive-looking tattoos are also appropriate, such as predator animals, skulls, anchors, or even tribal designs.Once enhanced this theme grants a 5% bonus to your creature's strength and basic instincts related to combat to those that do not possess them.
Water
Your creature appears to be made of water. Whether your creature looks like it's made of churning seawater, calm clear water, or even green swamp water it is not actually made of that substance and is in fact as solid as its base form. They cannot manipulate liquids in any way.Your creatures gain the ability to engulf creatures of their size or smaller, suffocating them should they not be able to breathe underwater, but anything able to swim can break free rather easily.
Weapon
With this theme, your creature appears as if composed of a multitude of weapons and armor pieces. It can be elegant with each weapon positioned perfectly, knife for claw, whip for tails, greaves for legs, etc. Or it can be chaotic, with all the weapons mixed haphazardly in the shape of the creature.Any weapons that strike your creature become trapped in their bodies and are slowly absorbed reinforcing your creatures at the same time.

-Explosive Finish: You can grant explosive energy to one of your creatures. Upon dying or on command the creature will violently explode. The strength of the explosion depends on the size of the creature, an insect would explode like a firecracker, a pig like a grenade, and so on. If the creature already explodes upon death, the strength of the explosion is doubled.
