I'm interested in the Seers 360 degree vision, that includes a field of view above his head right? With everything else he can see it would mean he has no blind spots for an opponent to take advantage of.
The other factor that caught my interest was what this could mean for Ultimate Summoning, if @zagan rules this to be wrong than so be it, but here's my thought on it.
When I saw that it creates two Seers to control one or the other, I thought it could make the Ultimate Summoning have a Seer that can control it remotely, allowing the Ultimate Summoning to leave his range if the second Seer stayed nearby Alex. Breaking the distance limit would mean he could make it larger, an assurance from it being unsummoned if it takes a step outside of his range, and it could follow a target like the Endbringers or Scion to an area that Alex might need to stay away from.
As for the Sep Adder, flying snek is pretty cute, if you like sneks too.
Adding to that, would Seer mean that in Ultimate Summoning could we have 2 bodies of the exact same amalgamation? Could fight 2 Endbringers at once?! Tohu Bohu come get some!
With Ultimate Summoning one Seer would become part of it and the other would appear separately. So yes it would allow the Ultimate Summon to exist in the summoning radius. Good Catch.
hey , just thought about something for velocity, dont know if we have that, but if we have a liquid that when touched with bare skin gets someon to sleep or paralyzed, we can smear some on his gloves, should give him 2- 6 defeated opponents, depending on how efficient he is. when called in, smear a bit on his gloves, let him focus on nonbrute capes=profit

I checked but we don't have any "poison" that works purely on contact but the idea does have merit. It would be tricky but I will be keeping it in mind.
Getting the other heroes their spots in the sunlight is a thing I'm actively trying to do but it's not easy. Mainly because if Alex is on the scene unless I'm giving him a huge idiot ball there's no reason for him to not intervene.
I managed to give some wins to the heroes before, Velocity caught Mush offscreen, Shielder resisted when the Empire tried to kidnap him, the bulk of the team defeated the Merchant when they came to free Mush (they escaped but because of something out of their control).
Yeah I noticed that, I guess the only way that will happen if Alex decides to visit a bit the other PRT branches like Piggot suggested for a day or two to make it possible. Or when Colin is patrolling, he encounters Lung and there's a vote option of Alex while remaining in console duty send his partner to support Colin in case of Oni Lee is there while Colin fights Lung
This post is there only because I need to make some rolls. I'm nearly finished with the next chapter, it may even come out today but no promises.
Edit: It turns out that you can't roll dice bigger than d100. In that case, I will roll using my old online roller and post the results here afterward.
So you may remember me saying that the chapter for those activities would be short, to give me some breathing room. And then I got the idea to have this chapter be composed of one or two paragraphs for each exercise. The two concepts were not compatible, so I ended up writing the equivalent of six or seven chapters into one. This may explain the delay in getting it out. Sorry. I hope you enjoy it.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Monday, 05/09/2011 (9 AM)
It was just before nine in the morning when Colin and I reached the Rig. There, we meet the four capes that would protect the Bay in our places during our absence. We exchanged a few words. And I was deeply impressed with the rooster that Colin managed to bring up. Narwhal herself, as statuesque as ever. She accepts to come as a favor to both Armsmaster and Dragon.
She would command two heroes from the New York Protectorate, Cache and Ursa Aurora. My interest was picked by the latter, I wondered how her bear projections would interact with my partners. I may try to talk to her when we get back.
The last one was a man called Chubster, despite his name he was a very experienced hero with years of experience. His power was certainly unique.
We didn't linger long but we thanked them all for their help. I gave each of them a Totem in appreciation, though I didn't know if Narwhal would be able to use it without ruining her aesthetic. I had a few stocked up and with my increased summoning ability I could make up the difference much more easily.
I also left behind two partners. Rainbow would facilitate their transportation. He was fascinated by Ursa Aurora's bears. And Koops who struck a quick friendship with Chubster. I gave the Koopa the Clockwork variant so he could serve as a healer. They were relayed on Narwhale and Cache respectively. In addition, there was Scalpa at his usual post guarding the PRT building.
If there was an emergency I could always teleport everyone back but hopefully, it wouldn't be needed.
Then we moved on to the helipad, the team was already there waiting for us and ready to go. The weather was fair, if a little overcast and the temperature was pleasant. It was a good sign for today's outing.
We wouldn't go alone, with us were twenty troopers. They would participate in the exercises in various roles.
Our transport for this would be my faithful Bruce. My train shark has acquired an excellent reputation since the battle against Leviathan. Everyone saw him flying all over the city gathering people that couldn't reach the shelters in time. And it spread through the net by a few people who record the experience with their phones. He was now a superstar. All by himself he managed to improve the reputation of sharks worldwide by a noticeable margin.
To accommodate everyone comfortably I called on Bruce with four cars, two or three would have sufficed but having room to move was never a bad thing.
We quickly got on board and started our journey, reaching the training ground would take a little less than an hour. It was enough to talk a little in between ourselves. Colin explained how this would go into more detail at least concerning the general organization but not the specifics of each exercise. He wants to wait for the last instant before giving those details.
He did say that not all scenarios were combat-based and that in fact, the majority of them could be completed by either side with no combat at all. He also specified that I would be limited on what partners and powers I could use for each scenario, giving me a folder with the details to open once we reach the site.
A little before we arrived, the Menagerie triggered and gave me four new partners at once.
Starting with the weakest one we got a normal Damselfly. it's pretty I guess./Elytra might like seeing it./The second one is a living origami crane, another SCP so-called anomaly. It's very cute and friendly.
Neither would allow me to beat an Endbringer but I wasn't opposed to some more cute partners.
Still not very threatening but a little more interesting we have a Sep Adder. /It's a very cool-looking snake with wings. It can't really fly but it can glide very well.
I may see some use for this one, if only for intimidation purposes.
And now for the star of this selection, we have the ghastly Seer./It's a Grimm like the Nightmare seed./What's special about it is that it's composed of two creatures that look like jellyfish. As long as one of them is inside our radius the other can persist outside of it with no limit./And that's because its main power allows for communication between two peoples looking into each Seer's head, almost like crystal balls. And it's completely untraceable and unblockable./What I like the most is the sense we get from it, a form of 360° vision. Very handy.
As I experimented with that trippy mode of vision I couldn't help but agree, it was a unique sensation. The only blank spot was a cone underneath my head. I was now accustomed to seeing from multiple points of view simultaneously but this was different from seeing through my partner's eyes. Either, I would need to only use it during patrol and combat or I would need to remind myself to turn my head when speaking to people. I might give a creepy vibe otherwise.
I returned the bulk of my focus to the real world when we reached the site. From above, it looks like a movie set or a little town from the Midwest like you see on TV. The main feature was a big building in the center that could represent a town hall, there was a police station adjacent to it, something that could pass for a library, multiple stores, and houses. In addition, some old cars were also parked in various places, a fast food stand was on the corner, a florist stand near the library, and of course, street furniture stood in appropriate places. All in all, it was very realistic.
There was also a long stretch of road going into the distance toward something that looked like a farm.
I directed Bruce to land in the middle of the pseudo-town square and we disembarked in short order.
A dragon suit greeted us on arrival. Dragon would oversee the exercises and record them for future review.
We went our separate ways soon after. The rest of the team took positions in the town hall that would serve as their base of operation for the first exercises. For my part, I took possession of an ordinary-looking house at the edge of the training ground. Once there I cracked open the folder. It was time to discover what those exercises would entail and what limitations I would labor under. It starts with a note from Colin.
<For each exercise, you must select the specified number of partners and supporting powers indicated and limit yourself to only those to recreate a power plausible for a normal parahuman to have and within the indicated parameters. I trust you to abide by those rules.>
I suppressed a laugh at the mention of normal parhuman and the implication that I wasn't. I shook my head and returned to work, I had some choice to make.
-CM-CM-CM-CM-CM-CM-CM-CM-CM-CM-CM-CM-
Colin led the way as we entered the building that would serve as our base. I glanced toward my always-focused wife. "So ready to throw down with the strongest Trump on the planet?"
Her tinkling laugh was as always a balm to my soul. "Don't say that where he can hear you. You know how he gets embarrassed each time he gets praised. And it won't be that bad. It's nice to be out of the Bay for a change. And we may end up having some fun."
I could only smile at her enthusiasm. "We can only hope."
Colin stopped in what could pass for a reception hall and turned around. "This building will serve as the stage for the first exercise."
Because I had known Colin for years, I could tell from the tightness of his mouth and despite his helmet that he was giving us all a serious look.
"Today, we're not sparring against a lone parahuman, not even an unusually powerful one. Today our adversary is an army. An army composed of parabeing, that are all perfectly coordinated, that can communicate telepathically, that can ignore each other's attack, and if one is taken out, another will take its place."
Hearing it being described like that, I couldn't help but gulp and exchange an uneasy look with my wife. I knew that Compendium was on our side, that he was a nice guy, and that this was just an exercise, but damn the images that this conjured weren't pleasant. No joke came to me.
"That being said, Compendium will face several restrictions for each exercise that will make things fair, or fairer at least. Facing an unwinnable challenge serves no purpose. We are here to learn."
That was somewhat reassuring and I breathed a sigh of relief. Maybe we'll have a chance after all.
"Now for some details…"
-CM-CM-CM-CM-CM-CM-CM-CM-CM-CM-CM-CM-
As I patrolled the corridors on the second floor of the building, pushing aside a recently installed security curtain, I couldn't help but think that this was stupid. Despite what I said to Ethan, I wasn't the most enthused about today's outing. Those sorts of exercises were supposed to take place twice a year for every Protectorate team but in Brockton Bay, we never could afford to get away even for just one day. The last comparable exercise that I participated in was three years ago, and it was only half the team.
This goes to show how the situation has changed.
I passed by a trooper, a woman that I knew, we shared coffee on occasion, and we exchanged the correct password. Even if I was doubtful of the effectiveness of such measures it was still good practice.
Truthfully if Compendium wants to infiltrate the building and steal what we're pretending to protect he could do so in a heartbeat, and we wouldn't even know about it. Our team wasn't the greatest at dealing with infiltrators, there were too few Thinkers among us.
Armsmaster also deployed something new, a fist-sized spherical drone that turned invisible a few seconds later. Maybe it would help.
I was on my third pass through the building, and I was starting to get bored, when my earbud crackled to life. "He's on the move! I saw a small dragonfly flying in! It must be one of his! First floor, north side! The security code is Lamba Five Mu Tau." I didn't recognize the voice, but the code was correct.
Velocity was the first to respond to the alert as was his role. "I'm on it."
As per Master-Stranger protocols, I didn't deviate from my route simply switching to a higher state of readiness. However, I slow down and start charging. Maintaining a charge for too long without using it was unpleasant after a while but it was doable.
Armsmaster's voice resonated a second later. "Probability of the insect being linked to Compendium is very high, they are extremely uncommon this far north. Remain in pursuit Velocity."
I heard shouts coming below, some troopers must have joined the chase. I suppressed a laugh imagining a bunch of soldiers and a speedster chasing a dragonfly through an office building. Despite that I remained at my post, this could very well be just a distraction.
A thumping sound echoed, followed by more shouts, and then my radio vibrated again with Velocity's voice. "Confirmation it's him. He somehow came out of the dragonfly, kicked two agents in the face, and then disappeared again. I lost sight of the insect during the confusion."
The next ten minutes were tinted with incertitude. I was forced to let go of my charge, I couldn't keep it contained for much longer. I kept my eyes peeled but I doubted he would come into my patrol zone, the objective was hidden in the basement.
As time progressed, I became hopeful that we could win this one. We just need to hold out for another quarter hour. Of course just as the thought came to me, my earbud crackled to life with my husband's voice. "He's in the vault! He got the documents!" This was followed by a crash from below. "He's getting away."
"Everyone moves to intercept. Code Omega, Omega, Seven, Zeta."
I took two seconds to gain a brief charge, before jumping out of the window. Landing with a discharge of electricity I raced toward the entrance at normal speed and planted myself there.
If he came out in this direction I should be able to zap him or his dragonfly. The tension ratched as I heard noises coming from inside, but noises moving away from me.
It ended when I heard one final crash and Hannah's voice on the radio. "Everyone stands down. We got him! Code Theta, Nu, Two, Sigma."
I breathed out a sigh of relief and let my charge dissipate. We won. Mainly because he limited himself severely but still it was nice.
Those pleasant feelings dissipated little when I learned how hard my teammates had to fight Compendium while he was using only one partner, a Damselfly as it turned out, and a power to enter the insect body. Despite using only that, two troopers were considered mission killed, Robin got a broken ankle for real, healed by now, and Roy suffered from a severe skin rash on his hands from a bad fall, also healed.
All in all, it wasn't such a stellar victory, not awful but still. Hopefully, the next exercise will go better.
-CM-CM-CM-CM-CM-CM-CM-CM-CM-CM-CM-CM-
Flying above the town square, I was glad to be out of the "headquarters". I wasn't of much use during the previous exercise, my lance was unwieldy in close quarters.
I think that this exercise would be much more interesting for me. Collin threw a twist our way because Compendium would act on both sides. On ours, he would play as a Changer/Breaker using what he called his Plasma Body power. And on the opposite side, he would provide seven "Parahumans".
Colin said they would act as a gang of case-53, The scenario was that we managed to capture one of them, a Yeti.
Since when does he get a Yeti, anyway? I shook my head, it wasn't important.
The others would come to break him out. And we were supposed to hold out for a fixed amount of time, simulating the arrival of reinforcement, or capture them too.
The concept was pretty similar to the previous exercise, preventing someone or something from taking someone or something that we were holding on to. Expect that this time it would most likely be a full frontal assault instead of an infiltration. But the assault could be a distraction for an infiltration. So as a security measure, some troopers remained inside, guarding the prisoner.
It was only ten minutes into the exercise, when I found myself under attack, a volley of man-sized tornadoes was heading my way. I didn't have time to look for the source because I was forced to dodge in a hurry. The tornadoes weren't that fast but they hemmed me in and forced me to stay on the move. One of them coming from an unexpected angle finally hit me, it didn't hurt, but I was sent flying nearly a hundred yards away. Only stopping when my boots found purchase in the air. Right now I was missing Alex's amulet, it would have been really useful right there.
The distance allowed me a moment to breathe and to assess the battlefield, and now it was a battlefield. Ten troopers, wearing torn clothes, pretending to be gang members were swarming the building, fighting the one not in disguise defending it.
They were allowed to do so because my teammates were busy fending off the "Case-53".
Collin was being sandwiched by the well-known jellyfish and Merle, who was a regular companion on patrol. The tinker was handling them easily enough, dodging water blasts and sharp leaves without much trouble. But it was still enough to keep his attention.
The couple on the team was playing volleyball with a big spinning sphere that wasn't making things easy for them, digging gouges in the ground each time it landed.
A mass of plasma was wrestling with a troll, cratering the ground around them in such a way that nobody dared to approach.
Velocity was playing distraction everywhere he could, even saving Roy from a turtle bite at the last instant.
Lastly, an ugly robot on a rooftop was launching tornadoes, trying to nail down Roy. The one that attacked me. This was distracting Roy from the giant turtle he was facing, while Hannah was peppering it with bullets to little effect.
With my assessment of the situation complete, I rushed toward the robot. It saw me coming and turned sharply, sending more tornadoes my way. Being better prepared this time, I weaved between them my lance pointed at the robot. I noted that at close range an opposing air current was pushing me away. It wasn't enough to stop me but it did slow me down.
Just before I could strike the robot it jumped away, much farther and higher than I would have expected given its frame. It must be using some form of air manipulation to enhance its jump. It was almost like fighting Stormtiger.
In the following minutes, I realized that the robot was leading me away, the sound of the battle fading behind me. But there was little I could do about it. If I abandon the pursuit to rejoin the main fight, it could come back at the worst possible time. The constant taunts with its weird echoing voice were grating but I ignored them as best as I could.
Using my shield at the right times, I managed to land some hits, but I didn't do as much damage as I expected on a robot.
I managed to gain an advantage by spending my charge on my boots to accelerate just as it was jumping. It allowed me more under it and struck it on its knee, breaking it. It lands wrong, falling to the ground with an angry snarl.
Despite that, it still tried to blow me away with its tornadoes when I landed so I used my shield once again to protect myself.
As I was about to ask it to surrender he froze and my radio activated. I heard Colin's voice. "End of the exercise. We achieved victory. Debrief in five minutes."
I smiled. That was two victories for the Brockton Protectorate, even if it was just an exercise it felt good.
The robot must have heard the same because it was grumbling under his breath as it got up. I noted that his knee was in perfect condition again, a reminder that it was holding back until now.
Without a word, we walked back together. When we reached the town square I realized that this victory wasn't without a cost. It was wrecked, with giant craters, trenches, piles of broken stones, an overturned fast food stand, and two cars burning merrily.
My teammates were in the process of being healed or having their costumes repaired. An important factor that I noticed was that all of Alex's partners were still there, meaning that none of them took enough damage to be "killed".
I doubt that the debriefing would be as straightforward as I expected.
-CM-CM-CM-CM-CM-CM-CM-CM-CM-CM-CM-CM-
I stopped Alex from repairing the town square, I would have a use for it later. Instead, we broke for lunch. We brought provision with us, and as usual, the ever-present Olky took charge.
The social algorithm built in my visor failed to discern any hostility or tension among the teams, or with Alex's partners, even if their inhuman shape made them harder to read for the program. And most importantly I couldn't perceive any resentment against Alex. Instead, they were talking about their respective performance, exchanging tips and tricks as they enjoyed their sandwiches.
This was good because the next exercise would be harder for the team. the role would be reversed. Alex would be holding hostages and we would have to rescue them, and he would hold back a fair bit less. I gave him a lot more latitude for this one.
As I ate, I thought back to the past and my endless ambition. It took being confronted with the strongest Trump since Eidolon to realize that I could never compete with that sort of power. And that if I tried I would just burn myself out. I must admit that the fact that I made more progress in the two months since he joined than in the previous year helped.
Case in point I was particularly proud of the invisible drone hovering above my head. The invisibility system itself used fibers from his invisible ape, saving me a lot of space on the inside for more systems. At least fifty percent of the parts came from him directly or indirectly.
"Things are going good so far Colin." Dragon's voice resonates in my helmet. "I've been reviewing the footage and it's very informative."
I subvocalized my answer. "Yes, the team is doing good so far. Are you sure you do not want to implicate yourself more in the exercises? I can accommodate you easily enough."
"Thank you but no. I'm busy with multiple projects. Only taking a break to eat before going back to it."
"Very well, enjoy your meal then."
"You too, Colin." Despite the shortness of it, this exchange made me smile. It was always a pleasure to talk with Dragon. We made for a good team.
…
The feeling associated with those thoughts, and what they meant, brought me short. I decided to shelve them for later. Now was not the time. I may need to do some soul-searching soon, however.
Once I finished eating, I walked toward Alex. He was listening attentively to Cressidus, his Blade. The troll-like man was gesturing and recounting their earlier fight with enthusiasm.
"And then you trapped me completely. I couldn't move at all. That was a good move Boss!"
Cressidus patted Alex on the back with a hand as big as my torso. Only Alex Brute's rating prevents him from being sent sprawling.
It was Cressidus that greeted me first. "Hello! Boss's Boss! Good fight!"
"Good day, Cressidus. Yes, it was a productive exercise." I turned toward Alex. "I want to talk about the next one."
"The Hostages? I have some ideas on how to go about it."
"Excellent." I gestured toward the Library. "You'll be holed up there. With six troopers and two mannequins acting as hostages."
He nodded thoughtfully as he observed the building. Together we walked toward it. "So what will you use? You're allowed to go further this time."
Turning he gave me a smile that even I could recognize as mischievous.
"I think it's time for Plantman to make a comeback." He followed words with actions, transforming under my eyes. And then he started summoning while talking. "Plantman will have the power to animate plants, enhance them, and give them shape. It should work nicely."
I watched as one by one appeared a few of his partners, all in the guise of plants, even if the majority didn't need it. A vine grappling hook appeared attached to his waist. His snake manifests around his neck. Merle was teleported by his side. The living cactus followed. Further behind the wooly hippo, now looking like a massive bush. He called for something resembling a theropod made of intertwined branches. And lastly, he called on his little sister, thankfully in her base state.
She appears to already be aware of what was planned because she was giggling in anticipation. I heard her muttering. "Vista will be so jealous. We're going to play the villains. It's going to be so much fun."
Alex was tapping his chin, seemingly deep in thought.
"A problem? That's already a sizable contingent."
I saw him frown. "Yes, but something is missing." He snapped his fingers. "Got it."
He gestured for his partners to make room and looked toward the stairs leading to the library. Right in front of it a tree appeared, I recognized it as the tree with the steel-like wood he showed me a while back. Though I noted that it was smaller than what I expected, still a respectable five meters in height. And then it began to move, his roots acting as legs and his branches as arms.
I suppressed my animal reaction to gulp. Seemingly proud of himself, Alex turned toward me. "Now I'm ready."
Looking at the assembled creatures, I wondered if the team was ready. This would be a tough challenge.
-CM-CM-CM-CM-CM-CM-CM-CM-CM-CM-CM-CM-
Half-heartedly I listened to Armsmaster as he explained the next exercise, searching for survivors in a disaster zone. The one we created previously. But I couldn't concentrate on his words, I was stuck thinking about the previous exercise. We failed utterly. There were no other words for it.
Getting past Alex's plant-like partners proved impossible in the confines of the library. The memory of being pinned to the ground by a velociraptor made of brambles still made me shudder.
The only one with even moderate success was Miss M. She managed to sneak a few of her new invisible drones to check on the hostage. And I think that it worked only because Alex pretended to not see them because it wasn't part of his supposed powerset. Assault even managed to "kill" one of the mannequins serving as a hostage.
After our previous wins, it stung.
I put those thoughts to the side when we started the Search and Rescue exercises.
The terrain was made up of the destroyed town square, the severely damaged library, and some tunnels dug under the police station. It wasn't that big of an area but we need to be careful not to collapse some sections on the victims.
Those were separated into two categories. Mannequins equipped with tech that mimicked life signs and some of Alex's partners volunteered because they wouldn't be at risk.
We moved cautiously, Assault and Battery focused on clearing the rubble once a victim was detected.
For once Velocity reduced impact on the world when moving fast proved to be a boon. It allowed him to move through dangerous sections of the library without disturbing anything.
Armsmaster's new drone and Miss M's invisible partners were also extremely useful. Without them, we wouldn't have found the mannequin trapped in the attic of the library.
There was also Dauntless, he didn't talk about it much but he used his power on his helmet, enhancing his senses to a degree. It was enough to help find a few victims.
Among the team, I was surprised to discover that I was well suited for this sort of task. Using my roar at a low level made for a makeshift sonar. In that way, I found the majority of the "victims". Even if it was just an exercise it was still gratifying.
When the exercises ended, after rescuing all the victims, the mood had improved among us all. Rescuing people, even false ones, felt good. We all felt like proper heroes. We were ready for the next exercise.
-CM-CM-CM-CM-CM-CM-CM-CM-CM-CM-CM-CM-
People often get the wrong impression of my power. They thought it was just moving faster with an odd drawback. But that wasn't it at all. From my perspective, I never move faster than a jog or a sprint. It's the world around me that slows down. Not quite to a standstill but nearly so. I could still see, in slow motion, wheels spin as cars advanced or an eyelid close as its owner blinked. I didn't even need to move to benefit from this, only to activate my power.
At the present moment, this accelerated perception of the world comes in really handy. It allowed me to watch as Compendium bounced from wall to wall as he tried to escape me. We were in a sort of foot race for this exercise. This false town wasn't really big enough to have a straightforward chase in a straight line so instead Colin chose several points all over the town and the surroundings that Compendium was supposed to reach in a certain order, grabbing an item each time. We didn't know where those points were. Otherwise, it would be too easy just to ambush him.
I didn't know exactly what combination of power Compendium was using, but it implied a lot of jumping and made him a Mover nearly on par with me, without the drawback. And for some reason, it implied wearing a sort of red tribal costume with a Native American vibe. At least it helps differentiate him from his normal costume.
For once I was on point. Simply because I could keep up. Jamie could too, but only in bursts. In the air, Shawn could move fairly fast too, but it wasn't enough. The others were, for the most part, left behind. So they spread themselves around town hoping to be in the right place to intercept.
While I was still faster than Compendium, his ability to move in three dimensions by jumping made this chase a real pain. The few times I managed to catch up to him I couldn't get my hands on the items he was transporting. Even if he wasn't actively using any Brute powers, he possessed passive ones that made him stronger than me.
My only hope was to intercept him long enough for some of the others to join me and pincer him.
We nearly succeeded earlier when a point turned out to be just under where Hannah was positioned and just as Jamie finished charging. At the last instant, he made a massive jump, at least two hundred meters in length, bouncing into a wall and disappearing behind a corner.
A few minutes later, we had a second opportunity. This time Jamie and Ethan were in the right place. In addition, Shawn was close enough to join us. Furthermore, the item that Compendium needed to grab was inside a house, limiting his opportunity to jump.
He was in the middle of the living room when I opened the door, just putting a disk case in his pocket. The noise of the door opening alerted him and he dashed toward the window. Racing after him I made him stumble by punching his leg a hundred times. It was just enough time for Jamie to appear behind the window.
Realizing that this exit was closed, Compendium whirled around and raced toward the stairs. I made use of a neat feature of my radios, speaking at superspeed and having the computer slow down my speech for my comrades.
Ethan was waiting outside and crashed through the wall upstairs in a cloud of debris, ending up right in front of Compendium.
Despite seemingly being caught off guard, Compendium reacts well. He dropped down and mule-kicked Ethan in the torso. To no effect because of his power. At that moment I thought we had him. Then to my shock, and Ethan's even greater shock, he pushed against Ethan to jump back to the bottom of the stairs. Jumping again, this time toward the open door before I could intercept him.
I spotted Shawn descending but it was too late.
Before leaving to continue the pursuit, I heard Ethan muttering to himself. "That's impossible."
It was the last time we managed to corner Compendium. Despite all our efforts he managed to collect the last item and then reach the edge of the town, signifying his victories.
-CM-CM-CM-CM-CM-CM-CM-CM-CM-CM-CM-CM-
The heated, but thankfully not hostile, discussion between Ethan and Alex ended just before the start of the next exercise. Something about power interaction.
I wasn't looking forward to this last operation. Trampling through the forest in search of civilization brought back a lot of dreadful memories. The only mitigating factor was the difference in flora, it helped separate things in my head.
Alex would teleport us some distance away in the forest, and we would have two hours to get back. The evening was approaching so the majority of the trek would be done in the dark. And to make things more interesting, we would be without most of our equipment. Even Colin would be without his armor and Shawn would be without his charged gears. We were already stripped of our costumes. Instead, we wore minimalistic army's BDU.
Colin signaled for us to approach, repeated the instructions, and nodded for Olky to teleport us all.
We didn't arrive in anything convenient like a clearing, instead, we appeared on thorny bushes and a muddy patch of ground in between two trees. Extracting ourselves from that was already an exercise in frustration as we tried not to damage our clothes too much.
Alex was supposedly nearby, in case we had an accident, but even with Manhattan Transfer senses, I couldn't detect him.
After Ethan helped Jamie extract herself from a particularly thorny branch, he spoke up. "Well, that wasn't a great start. Still, we're in May. It's not too cold and it's not raining. It shouldn't be too difficult to make our way back."
Alex's voice came out of nowhere. "Thanks for the reminder, I knew I forgot something."
A few seconds later, water started falling from the sky in a drizzle.
"""Ethan!""" The communal shout of frustration coming from us all, even Colin, was spontaneous. The fool was too busy fending off his wife's punches to respond.
While that was going on we took shelter under the nearest tree. It wasn't perfect but it would do for the moment.
Once he was sufficiently chastised we all refocused on our objectives. Colin gestured for me to take the lead.
I started by changing the shape of my weapon, into a Heckler & Koch USP with a SureFire flashlight mounted below its barrel. It was one of the perks of my powers, I could do accessories as long they were attached to the weapon.
With light secured I addressed Ethan.
"I want you to jump as high as you can and see if you can spot any landmarks."
He grumbled but complied after Jamie boosted him up. A few seconds later he crashed back down through the canopy, landing with nary an impact.
"I saw a communication tower that way. "He pointed toward our back. "Pretty sure it's the one that was north of the town."
I nodded; "Good enough. Let's move."
Trudging through the forest wasn't pleasant. There weren't any trails or even animal paths. Ethan was forced to jump up regularly to check that we were still on the right track.
The rain followed us all the way through, lowering our field of view and making our footstep treacherous. More than once someone would slip on a patch of wet moss or a mud puddle.
We didn't see much wildlife, our group was too loud and we scared them well before they could come into view.
When we finally reached the town, right at the two-hour mark, we all breathed a sigh of relief. It was over. Trekking for two hours in the forest after the long day of activities we had left us all exhausted. Thankfully it was over. Alex would teleport us back and we would be able to rest.

I reconnected to my hovering suit a little before the group emerged from the forest. Fast forwarding the replay of the day reveals some excellent footage of their exercises. It was interesting to watch, it showed a lot of curious power interaction.
Returning my attention to the world I watch as the heroes are cleaned up by Compendium's little helper and as they enter private rooms to put on their costumes.
I couldn't help but be impressed by Colin's new armor. It was a masterpiece, the culmination of years of work, some of it my own, and recently aided by Compendium's contribution. Of course, the bulk of my admiration was for Colin himself. He made a lot of progress recently on a social level and he was less stressed. I was glad for that.
Before the group left, Compendium requested a few minutes to try out a power. He said that it wasn't practical to use while in town.
Curious, I watched as he walked to the edge of the training ground.

He started by summoning a human-size Pickle with arms and legs made of vine. The creature gave a salute and they exchanged a few words before Compendium dismissed it.

Then I watched as an expression of panic appeared on his face before being replaced by relief as a little black piglet with blue horns appeared on the ground. Compendium knelt and appeared to communicate inaudibly with it for a moment. Then the piglet disappeared, but it left behind something. Zooming in I saw that it was one of its blue horns. Compendium took it with some reverence and placed it in his pocket with obvious care.
I saw him hesitate before he took a deep breath. And then he summoned again.

This time it was some sort of giant insect, resembling a flea, that appeared. It was wearing a miner hat and wielding a pickaxe. Again a few words were exchanged before the insect disappeared.
Compendium joined back up with the others. After the heroes and the troopers hold hands they all disappear back to Brockton Bay.
I put my suit on autopilot so it could navigate back to my base. What was the deal with those three creatures? They didn't appear in any of Compendium's reports. The piglet intrigued me, it generated a strange reaction from Compendium than the others.

After that you can bet that Alex will be even more wary of random summoning than before, it was extremely lucky that this one had an alternate form.

Holy shit, that was a close one! Alex's first 900 Point Creature would have crushed that town in an instant had Gugulana not had a tiny Lily Form.
Also, I think these two could be combined since they are thematically similar. A double PR Event thing maybe?
It's fine better this way to just finished the training exercise in one chapter instead of 7 so that we can do other stuff

You wouldn't believe how much I sweated when I checked the doc to see what it was.
It wouldn't have crushed the town, Alex would have looked up and summoned it as high as possible before dismissing it. But yes, it would have had massive consequences and the chapter would have ended on a cliffhanger.

Was surprised and elated to see this, wasn't sure the wiki got that aspect of The Jump across well enough for someone to know it could do that.
For anyone curious, TLDR is the card can impart forward momentum to stationary objects, that's how it can pull off its pseudo-telekinetic effect of moving all those plush toys in the anime, it just kept doing that to change their direction in mid-air and eventually tired itself out. (It can even be used on an opponent too, as Yue did to Sakura during the Final Judgement.)

*Embarrassed blush*
I'll be honest I didn't remember that episode and I didn't reread the Wiki when writing that scene. My reasoning was that no amount of kinetic/momentum negation can prevent someone from jumping from a surface if they're under the effect of The Jump. It's a "conceptual" effect, it does not care for physics.
I'm very glad to know that it's canon-compliant. Thank you.
