I really don't agree with this. Mostly cause the summoning isn't using the Menagerie and instead the magic system of Fate, which happened to be a power you included into the menagerie and it would be a waste to just get a weaker animal of something we already have.
Just to clarify, we didn't gain Gugalanna. It was just summoned once from Random Summoning. I was under no obligation to have it left behind a horn to gain some kind of permanent benefit. I choose to do so because I want to commemorate the first summoning of a 900-point creature and a Divine beast at that.
I agree with that actually. It's not like it'd be summoning from the Menagerie. And getting a redundant version of what we got when we have powers to nerf Gulang already is redundant. Made it so summoning option was nixed.
There are ways I think you could do it. Say this ain't the Nasuverse so he can't do it.
Which is a legitimate worry I have as I've thought about it.
Or that he can but it's a weak connection so the line can't bear a strong Servant, or say it can be done but only by jury rigging thru the (portals? tunnels?) And thus the CM has a greater influence on the ritual and forces the summoning to bring forth some kind of animal.
Hell you can even throw a curve ball and make it so Compendium tries to do a human one thinking it'll be fine not understanding some of the underlying mechanisms involved like not being in a verse that lacks the Counter-Force or the Grail to support the summoning ritual. So it goes thru the CM which rejects it and tries to block it. So with Magic Boost and other powers the ritual gets derailed into another verse. Summoning some other animal as a Servant that's either not quite connected to the CM or is and doubly a Servant like Shadowmere.
The decision of not summoning human servants is my own. The only link with the CM is that I'm the creator of both the CM and this quest.
I just don't want to deal with Ishtar, Gilgamesh, Enkidu, Arthuria, or another. I don't think I need to justify it more than that.
Fair. It was just that one option you offered that didn't make sense to me. After stating that my mind just went on postulating alternatives even though I knew you weren't going bother with them.
Hello, all. I hope you're having fun this weekend and that you're enjoying the holiday season.
I'm currently writing the next chapter and it's going well. No promises when it will be finished and posted, but it's progressing steadily.
There's one minor snag, I'm trying to find questions that children between five and fourteen might ask to Compendium.
I've got a few ideas but I could use a few more.
If you have an idea I'm all ears and you can give me the name of the child. If the question ends up being used I'll also use the name of the child as long as it's not something stupid.
Hello, I'm back from getting my computer looked at. I have some, admittedly stereotypical, suggestions for the question and answer sessions.
Tina (age 6): "Do you have a unicorn?"
Billy (age 11): "Where do your monsters go when not summoned?" note, calling Compendium's companions 'monsters' is something that will likely happen with a bunch of children in my mind
The unfortunately named Harry Bottoms (age 8): "Can you show us what you used against Leviathan?"
Jennifer (age 13): "Are you really a Tinker? My friend Alex sent me a link to PHO that talked about you being a biotinker and making your own creatures."

I thought the cartoon was still in production. It has only been a few months since Compendium joined right? Presumably it would take a while to gather the resources necessary for a decent cartoon to say nothing about making it. Unless it is a really cheap cartoon.
I actually had an idea for an omake about that a while ago, if I write it I'll post it.

Yeah, the cartoon is still in the planning stage. Things are moving fast because the PRT wants to capitalize on Compendium's popularity, even more so now, but they do have some standard qualities to meet. They might have the pilot done by the end of the summer. And even then I'm being generous.

Well, if we want to be technical. It would be the Ultimate Summon. We should give it a name besides Ultimate Summon. I'm a call em Salmon, for the lols. Though if we were doing individual, The Giant "F@ck You" Radioactive Lizard that's capable of fighting God, EVA, and Gods of different realities are pretty up. But, to decide a victor would probs result in the Earth experiencing Apocalypse 2, Electric Boogaloo.

Merry (delayed) Christmas/Hanukkah/Yule/[insert appropriate end-of-the-year celebration here] to you all.
I wanted to get this chapter out yesterday but I just couldn't squeeze it in. I wasn't the only one to have that idea, there were a lot of new chapters for a lot of different fics yesterday. And there's the Pokemon DLC too. And my family celebration too. So yeah, it just didn't work out.
I enjoyed writing this chapter, it was really fun. The orphanage scene was a pain to write and perhaps ended up a touch too melodramatic, still, I'm relatively happy with it. Enjoy!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Monday, 05/09/2011 (10 PM)
I was still in shock when we reappeared in the Rig. It took the focus of no less than five Minds to go through the discussion with Narwhal and the other heroes. Thanking them once again for their help. They had nothing to report, there were no major incidents today. The only thing was that Oni Lee was spotted popping up all over Merchant territory. But nothing came of it, thankfully.
When they left I realized that I missed the opportunity to talk with Ursa Aurora about power interaction. Maybe another time.
Absently, I bid good evening to my teammate before teleporting back to my office and then into the Orb.
It was then that I allowed myself to let out an explosive breath of air.
"We dodged a hell of a bullet there, Clank."
Clank jumped from my back and nodded. "That we did, Sir."
"We were extremely lucky that Gugalanna had an alternate form that was so small. The very idea of a full-size Bull of Heaven appearing out of nowhere would have had catastrophic consequences."
"I'm sure you could have dealt with them, Sir."
"I appreciate the support Clank but I think I need to shelve Random Summoning for the time being. Maybe the Menagerie will provide an alternative at some point."
"We can only hope, Sir."
Trying to put that issue to the side, I retrieved the horn tip that Gugalanna left behind. It was an extremely potent material. To my magic sight, it blazed like the sun. I had no idea what I was going to do with it. The most obvious would be to fashion a weapon out of it, considering the size it could make for the tip of a spear. A vibration from my right arm indicated that Devil Bringer would love to eat it. A plethora of other options present themselves but I decided to table that decision for later. I would have only one chance at it.
Baggage was overjoyed to secure such a precious resource in his hoard. Manifesting a new compartment with a velvet cushion just for it.
Satisfied with that, I took a leisurely walk toward Camp Camelot. As I did so I reflected on today's training. It was an interesting experience, it allowed me to use some powers that I rarely used before. The combination of Creature Haunting and a tiny partner, like the Damsel works extremely well. This was definitely on my list to create a new Hero. And making the Adam Tree into an animated object was a stroke of genius. It did necessitate reducing the size of the tree and only creating one combatant while costing two summoning slots. So it wasn't very efficient but still fun.
Seeing my teammates in action was also a treat. In particular, The fight against my partners masquerading as villains Case-53 was a lot of fun. And I was even more convinced that I needed to give the Seeds of Strength to Velocity, it would easily triple his effectiveness. I'll need to speak to him soon.
I reached the Dungeon's portal to see the Pioneer lounging outside. They've been going at it with a vengeance since Zap's unfortunate accident. They've all reached level three today. Caradoc gained an ability called Jumpstrike that combined with The Jump could make him a right terror. The Electric Field that Zap could now deploy was an excellent defensive option for him. Kuja could now merge with another weapon, granting all her powers to that weapon. She chose that option mainly for me, so she could remain helpful even if I used another weapon, like Cressidus's Gauntlet. It was also very useful for the team, allowing her to fuse with Caradoc's sword.
But the real prize was Star's enhanced healing magic. They could now heal nearly all diseases, including cancer. This would make healing Dennis's Dad a much easier prospect.
Before going to bed I want to run the Dungeon myself. There was little chance for Nimue to gain her fourth floor even with that, but tomorrow she would. My knowledge of Dungeon indicated that this speed of growth was unprecedented for a normal Dungeon. The boosts from the Menagerie and cooperative adventurers were truly a boon for her.
I have a big day tomorrow. PR events that for once I was looking forward to. I would be visiting some schools as my long-delayed punishment for killing Hookwolf, everything that happened pushed it back until now. And even better, my request to visit an orphanage was approved so I would go to one in the late afternoon.
And so Tuesday morning at eight and a half I was in front of Seaside Elementary. It was an L-shaped building near the boardwalk. It wasn't the school I had gone to when I was that age, my family location and condition meant that I went to the more modest Columbus Elementary.
This one was of a much higher standing. The walls were decorated with colorful murals and the schoolyard was filled with high-quality equipment.
To appear as friendly as possible I switched my partners around a bit. Clank remained of course. My mount was Pegase instead of a scary dragon, like Massue. Aylamon was there, I couldn't have kept her away if I tried. And the friendly and fluffy Ruff was by my side.
Upon landing, I was greeted by the headmistress. A plump and motherly woman called Amanda Queen.
"Compendium, It's an honor to have you today. The children will be overjoyed. We gathered them in the gymnasium but we didn't tell them why. Follow me." She gestured for me to follow her, walking away with surprising speed.
We followed her, except for Pegase who remained outside. The Headmistress guided me through the building, I caught glimpses of the classrooms as we walked. Aylamon looked particularly fascinated by the colorful drawings hanging on the wall. I had the amusing idea of my little sister joining a class here. It would no doubt devolve into chaos in short orders.
When we reached the end of the corridor, in front of a double door, I heard the characteristic noise of a group of people regrouped into the same space. The Headmistress asked us to wait here while she announced us.
Ruff sniffed at the door while the noise diminished and then stopped in the gymnasium. The muffled voice of the Headmistress was understandable despite the obstruction.
"Children. I'm sure that you're all wondering why you're here instead of being in class. I have a surprise for you all. A very special guest came to see us today. I'm sure that you all heard of him."
She opened the door and gestured for me to enter. I took a deep breath and tried to remember all the pieces of advice that the image department gave me.
"It's an honor for me to present you Compendium and his friends!"
I stepped inside, waving at the crowd of stunned children. Aylamon and Ruff followed me enthusiastically. Inside, I could see around a hundred children aged from five to ten arranged in rows on folding chairs with the youngest in the front. And with the teachers positioned at the edge of the room. When they managed to overcome their disbelief, just after I stepped behind the improvised lectern, pandemonium erupted. Screams of joy, chants of my name, applause, and more came from every corner of the room. Was I ever that loud at that age?
A little uncomfortable with the situation, I gave them a minute to get it out of their system. And then, I realized that it wasn't stopping. I gave a helpless look to the Headmistress but she only replied with an encouraging smile.
Understanding that I would get no help from that corner I decided to take matters into my own hands. I considered using The Voice to remove their abilities to speak or to equip Zilla's voice box to roar. But either of those options would probably traumatize them in different ways.
Instead, I gathered some Chakra and clapped my hands as strongly as I could. The resulting bang echoed loudly through the whole room. Blessed silence followed, only broken by a few whispered wow.
"Thank you. Good day to you all."
A chorus of good days followed.
"It's a pleasure to be there today. I will be with you for three hours. I will start by giving you a few tips on how to interact with Parahuman, what to do in dangerous situations, and some advice if you ever gain powers."
There was some clamor at that, excited whispers being exchanged. I hid a wince, I could understand wanting to gain power but I knew the cost of it for a normal Parahuman.
I cleared my throat and they quieted down. "After that, you'll be able to ask questions. And if we have time at the end, I let you play with some of my partners."
There was a second explosion of noise at that announcement. But they quickly quieted down when they realized that the more time they spent celebrating the less time they would get to play at the end. This impressed me a little, those were some well-behaved children.
A cheeky girl in the back shouted. "Can't we do it in reverse order?"
I laugh and shake my head. "Nope, sorry."
Following the guidelines that I was given I started my speech. I did my best to make this exercise as interesting as possible by adding anecdotes from my short career when appropriate.
I remember being on the other side of this equation, while the first time and maybe the second were interesting after that it got redundant and boring. But in the world we live in they were necessary. The reason why Protectorate members gave those speeches instead of teachers was to emphasize the importance of those lessons. A child would be much more inclined to follow the advice of a recognized hero than that of a teacher.
When I finished my speech the headmistress applauded and the majority of the children followed suit.
Once things calmed down again I spoke up. "Now we can start the fun part. You can ask me any questions you want. I may not answer everything but I'll tell you why I can't if that's the case."
Seeing nearly all the children raise their hands I realized that I needed a way to designate who would speak. A plan quickly formed in my head.
"Here's how it's going to work." I summoned Unown above my head, they were a good mix of weird and cute. "This is Beta. They'll be the ones to choose who got to speak by landing on your lap. Don't worry they won't bite. They don't have a mouth."
That's got some scattered laughs.
"Then you can give me your name, age, and ask your question. That's alright for everyone?"
They replied enthusiastically. ""YES!!!""
I let Beta go, letting them choose. They hovered above the crowd for a bit, the children following their movement with their eyes before they chose to land in the lap of a boy in the middle of the pack. The boy hesitated before gingerly brushing his hand over the top of Beta's body. The Unown closed his eye in contentment and the boy smiled.
I cough to remind him of his question.
Sheepish he looked up. "Sorry. Hm, My name is Harry Bottom. I'm eighth. Can you show us what you used against Leviathan?"
I made a show of examining the interior of the hangar. I chuckled. "I don't think we have enough room for that." That got me some smiles and laughs. "More seriously I called on a lot of partners and powers during that battle. But I think I know what you want to see. I can't summon the real one, but here's an image of him."
I manifest a scaled-down illusion of TonZilla behind me, without the knife. Everyone, including the teachers, let out an expression of awe at the sight. Harry was sporting a huge smile.
I dismissed the illusion and directed Beta to fly up. Harry waved at them.
"Next question."
Beta lands in a little girl's lap closer to the front row. She laughed in delight as they did, grabbing Beta's bottom loop with obvious pleasure.
"Hi, I'm Tina. I'm six and a half. Do you have a unicorn?"
I made a dramatic sigh. "Sadly, no I do not have a unicorn. Maybe one day. But I do have a Pegasi if you want. I came with him today, he's just outside."
"What's a Peg..as…y?"
"It's a horse with wings."
"Oh, that's so cool!"
I directed Beta to fly up and Tina waved. "Bye-bye Beta." It was extremely cute.
The Symbol Pokemon then lands in the lap of a boy further in the back. The Boy tried to look serious and ignored Beta.
"Lary, I'm nine. Do you have your monsters fight each other, and who's the strongest?"
I didn't comment on the monster appellation, they were just children. "That's a tricky question. Yes, my partners regularly fight each other, for training. Now I can't really tell who's the strongest. It depends on a lot of things. Physically Zilla whom I showed earlier is a good candidate for first place. That's good enough for you?"
"Yes, thank you."
Things continued in the same way for a few more minutes, with questions as varied as why I chose Compendium as my name or who would win between Eidolon and me. I elude that one by saying that heroes didn't fight each other.
When I ended the sessions of questions, a fair number of children were disappointed that they didn't get to ask their questions but they perked back up when I said that there was enough time for them to meet some of my partners outside.
I was very impressed when the teachers managed to wrangle a hundred excited children through the school corridor and into the schoolyard without incident.
Once outside they discovered Pegase, a lot of girls gravitating toward the magnificent horse in short order. Some started playing with Ruff, the excitable furball leading a massive game of tag. Aylamon joined several children on the swing. Beta remained with the youngest children, sending a balloon in the air with bursts of air. To spice things up I also called White who became a fluffy mountain for the more adventurous child to climb. And finish things off with a swarm of Butterflies to add some colors to the event.
After half an hour, it was time for me to go. Noon was approaching and the children needed to eat. I did too.
The children were heartbroken to see me go, well to see my partners go mainly. The goodbye took a little bit but I did manage to extract myself from the situation with one last hug between Aylamon and a little girl.
After a brief lunch at the PRT building with Robin and some troopers, it was time for me to go to Arcadia Middle School, a sister school to Arcadia High.
Then the same sequence of events from the morning repeated themselves, the only variance coming from the fact that the older audience tried to pretend to not want to play with my partners and asked different questions.
There was, where do your monsters go when not summoned? I remained evasive because explaining that they were engraved into my soul and their consciousness got a bubble of virtual reality inside my brain would have been complicated. There was also a demand to show my dragon. To which I responded a cheeky Which one? To elaborate I showed an illusion of Massue,Camo, and Xaytorreth. I summoned Light for real and he flew through the room.
And then there was one tricky question.
"Are you really a Tinker? My friend Alex sent me a link to PHO that talked about you being a biotinker and making your own creatures."
For this one, I took my time explaining that while I did have a Tinker power, it wasn't Biotinkering even if it could involve organic materials such as wood or leather. I also insisted on the fact that Biotinkering wasn't in itself an evil power, there was no evil power. It was easier to abuse than some other powers certainly but not necessary.
I ended my explanation by joking that if I needed to build my partners from the ground up I wouldn't have as many as I did and certainly not as big.
No, what ended up being the most important moment of my visit to Arcadia Middle School has nothing to do with my speech or with the session of questions and answers. It happened in the schoolyard. I was leaning in the shadow against a tree, watching as the children and pre-teens interacted with my partners. I was approached by a thin brown-haired girl that I estimated to be twelve. I noted worriedly that she didn't look to be in the best shape, she was holding her hand against her head as if she was in pain. I was just about to push against the wall to approach her when she walked toward me.
I saw her stumble and slump in relief when she closed into my position.
"Are you alright Miss?"
She fixed me with an unnerving stare before giving me a blinding smile. "The numbers! You made the numbers go away."
What followed was a confused and jumbled explanation that finally let me understand that the girl was a Thinker, some sort of Precog. And I confirm it with my Analytical Eyes. She was able to give the probability of an event happening. She complained that she suffered from near-constant thinker headaches because refraining from answering questions was nearly impossible.
And the worst thing was that nobody believed her. Her parents thought her delusional, her friends made fun of her, and the doctors couldn't find anything wrong with her.
Of course, when she entered Yellow's force-repelling bubble she lost access to her power entirely, it just wasn't possible to divine the future inside it.
To avoid drawing too much attention to ourselves while she talked I pretended to sign an autograph.
When she finished her story, she begged for my help. Even asking if I could suppress or remove her power permanently.
And that was the crux of the problem. She would be more than welcome in the Wards but It wouldn't help with her headaches. While I could lend her a small partner Equipped with Yellow's power it wasn't a permanent solution and would tie up some resources on my part. It wouldn't be anything insurmountable but it was still a factor to consider.
The best thing to do would be for her to learn how to better use her power. Or perhaps Colin could cobble together something that could help.
And if that wasn't enough she revealed that she was the Mayor's niece, and more importantly for me, Rory's cousin.
As a temporary measure, I gave her a Relayed Sponge equipped with the anti-Force bubble for her to hide in her school bag. Then I sent her on her way, I didn't want the other children, or the teachers, to be suspicious of my interaction with a pre-teen girl. I promised her that either I or someone from the Protectorate would contact her as soon as possible.
When I left the school I hurried to HQ and met with Rory. I explained the situation to him and he assured me that he would take care of it. Seeing how much he was frowning as I spoke and the scowl he sported when I left, I had no doubt that he would.
I would have liked to remain focused on that problem but I still needed to visit the orphanage and that wasn't something that I could or wanted to reschedule.
The orphanage was located in a converted firefighting barrack on the edge of the dock. It wasn't the most healthy environment for children but it was clean and well cared for. Thankfully even the gangs tried to avoid doing anything too shady in the vicinity or even worse fighting nearby. Not because of any form of compassion but simply because burning down an orphanage was a good way to be smitten down by the Triumvirate.
I was welcomed inside the building by the matron and her assistant. At the moment I was alone, my partners were waiting in the orb, and I didn't want to spook anyone.
This was special, it wasn't a PR stunt, it wasn't a communication coup, and I didn't need such a thing to increase my popularity. No, I was here because I wanted to do something good that didn't involve punching bad guys or monsters.
I was led toward a room that once served as the garage of the barrack and that was now a combination of a living room, dining room, and playroom.
I found a mix of children, preteens, and teens totaling twenty. The majority appeared happy to see me but even then they remained wary and on their guard. I could tell that they've been burned before. There was a duo of almost adults, barely younger than me in fact that didn't join in the cheer that my presence caused. I didn't try to approach them or to reassure them, I very much doubt it would do anything. They could judge my actions.
To start things off, Olky teleports in a pile of boxes full of toys. Those were not the ones produced by my powers, the image department rightfully pointed out that those were one of a kind and worth so much that they could attract vultures. Instead, those toys came from the PRT stores, paid by image. Their budget received a substantial increase recently.
While I distributed the toys, Olky was sent to repair anything that needed it, to replenish their food store, and to clean the building from top to bottom. To help with that I enhanced him with my new power, Magic Boost. I gained it in the middle of the afternoon and it was my new favorite boost. Doubling the effects of all magic-like power was huge.
Seeing the children smiling and laughing while they played, perhaps for the first time in their lives with first-hand toys, was a true pleasure.
In addition to the toys, the older children received phones, not state-of-the-art ones but still of good quality and books.
I couldn't really understand the suffering that those children had gone through, not really. While I lost my father I was nearly an adult when it happened and I still had a mother. I still had a home. It wasn't the case here. Most of them lost their entire family while really young, this orphanage was the only home they ever knew.
Some would call me a sentimental fool, that what I was doing was useless in the long run. Perhaps it was, perhaps not, but if I could improve their lives by even a tiny bit I was happy to do it.
After distributing the gifts I let out some of my partners so they could play too.
When I left, after sharing a dinner that I helped prepare, I was in an excellent mood. Today was a good day.

I don't actually care about any of the other votes, I just want to know if the people who think they have magic actually got it from us altering the setting.
This is a rare chance to potentially gain Dimensional Travel.

I suspect the meeting with the Adepts is time-limited. They are not native to the city and will likely have to return home soon.
As for the Mech, it is a prerequisite for giving away the Trifangle. Actually, @zagan does the Mech need to be completed before Alex can set-up the new 'Tinker' hero or did he just need to accumulate the parts?

Not at all, Alex has already accumulated a fair number of parts. He'll keep enough to build and repair one and give the rest at the same time as the Trifangle so that the new hero will already have a stockpile to start with.
