Springtime of Nations II: A European Republic Quest

In the interest of clarity, I have removed the word "temporarily" from the section indicating that a release with apology will "temporarily defang the war-hawks". This is because all mood shifts are fundamentally temporary when compared to the enduring material conditions which set nations against each other, so I was unclear by only adding it to the reduction.

I've also removed "fully" from "France will be fully mollified" in the same explanation, not out of any desire to change perceptions or create clarity, but to remove an unnecessary modifier, because I am a compulsive self-editor. Thank you for your indulgence.

Also, this vote is clearly not going to take two days, so I'm cutting it back to 24 hours. I may re-extend it if we get lots of votes at the end, though.

I mean it doesen't matter tbh who has a lead atm no vote is gonna get a majority just a plurality vote so a run off is basically inevitable at this point

This won't cause a war, I wish it would, I want war, but the only option that will cause a war is if we shoot him

also though, I don't buy France's chances much in a war considering thier unstable colonial possessions, our very skilled military, and their otl war with prussia

The issue is that we have no guarantees France would be our only opponent.

Frankly, the assumption that we would win a war against France for reasons that boil down to "Bismarck did it in real life" is almost insultingly reductive. As far as I can tell, our advantages aren't on the same playing field by either category or magnitude. Furthermore, our diplomatic standing would be unfavorable: we'd knowingly be provoking war on the basis of a flimsy conviction. I'm sure some vanguardists would find that appealing, to bind Germany to their bloodthirsty pyre, but reasonable minds should stay wary.

I don't think we can win a war with France (and allies), and that starting a war, regardless of it's outcome, in this circumstance, is already a defeat in itself.

I don't think we need to start a war, we just need to not immediately capitulate to demands to release a spy and apologize for daring to arrest him.

I voted for apology, but there's a reason people aee confident in our chances for a 1v1 against France. We literally kicked Prussia's ass in a war against both them *and* Austria in the first quest that attains the lands that the Republic has today today - and IIRC that was before further insane degree of militarization for the First Republic that carried over and is in the process of further improving in the Second Republic. Moreover, France did not have the wake-up call of the Franco-Prussian War, and our army is better than the North German Confederation that defeated France IRL.

What I'm not confident of is knocking France out fast enough before the UK can intervene, which would pave the way for a future war where we're surrounded in all directions. I'm also wary of the League being brazen enough to declare war on Germany while we're fighting the French.
