Honor Between Minds
Chuck would not lie in saying that he was nervous about this state of affairs.
As he quickly attempted to cover his virtual tracks - less for other people online, more in the case that Master Zik attempted to sniff out if he was trying to betray him - the Thorndyke genius reflected that he never expected to ask Eggman, of all people, for help.
If Chris were here, he would likely protest at how things were going, and Chuck wouldn't blame him. They were talking about the man who released at least three different types of evils in the world, once built a moon-sized satellite and blocked the sun to hold the world hostage and was overall a menace for Sonic's world for years.
At the same time, Chuck was also very much aware he would be better than these Zeti that were holding them hostage.
It was such a misfortune how they ended up there. They were working to stop Eggman from going through his latest scheme - something about the kingdom of Murasia? Chuck had so much in his head he couldn't even bother to remember now - and in the next moment, everything went bright and they appeared back into the mansion, only he and his grandson. No signs of any of their employees, not even the ever-loyal and energetic Ella. Their mansion was close to Station Square, but Chris was quick to realize things seemed off...right when the explosions began.
The next days were chaotic. The duo, ever charitable, let a few refugees enter their lands for safety, the mansion now turned into a safe haven. Meanwhile, G.U.N. tried to bring order to the region but was splintered into a combat of many factions trying to claim being the "true" one and it was overall a mess of a faction war with lots of in-fighting and allies turning to enemies.
But things were getting better. Clearer minds prevailed and a united front formed. This "Neo Metal Sonic" fell in battle - when did Eggman even built
that?! - and the machines of the Egg Empire fell in disarray. Chuck was even thinking of offering his intellect and resources in order to help things calm down further, maybe even to those nice fellows of Resistance - that Whisper girl had hit pretty well with Chris over their shared admiration of Sonic...
And then one day, Chris brought home a seemingly injured red giant.
It was a stormy day. Chris left with some other people to help fix some electrical issues the system of the manor was having when they came across a wounded red giant in their field. Worried by the seemingly grave nature of those injuries, they decided to return him to the mansion for treatment.
Oh, their carelessness. No one wondered how he even passed through the defenses Chuck had installed.
It was then a nasty surprise when he righted himself up and caught his dear grandson by the throat before a wave of Badniks surrounded them. Followed by five other monsters, all surrounding their home.
The terms of Zavoc were simple: work for him, and not the hair of a single person currently in the mansion would be touched. Chuck had tried thinking other options, but Chris was in their grasp: he had no other choice
but to comply to their demands...
Zavoc kept his word. He barked for his Badniks to take everyone out of the mansion,
then ordered the Badniks to open fire, much to their shock. And, to further add to the wound, they set fire to the building.
The Thorndykes could only watch in horror as their home crumbled into pieces. Zavoc simply said:
"You belong to me now. Don't forget it."
He and Chris were split apart, the boy being held over his head as a silent Sword of Damocles to make him comply in hacking Eggman's machines, and submit them to their will. To work on machines for them as they tried to walk over Green Hills and make them their personal empire.
Is it any wonder that he was willing to accept help even from Eggman?
In truth, his hope was that Tails would be the one to see his desperate plea for help, which would lead to getting help from Sonic, Knuckles and the whole gang perhaps. He wasn't even sure if the little fox was in Green Hills, he realistically could be anywhere!
But the Eggman he knew had standards. Moral lines even he wouldn't cross. Chuck knew they wouldn't have their lives threatened. But Chuck would be foolish to not have a backup.
So he let them in. Left enough holes they wouldn't suspect a thing, that Zavok wouldn't catch to anything. He still worked hard, but Eggman was on fire apparently, as they teared through this EggNet and got loads of information and recovered the control of some Badniks. But they didn't have enough time to cover the trail, and next thing they knew, he had their location figured out.
Blackmailing wasn't something Chuck liked to use, but desperate times called for desperate measures. Now all he could hope was that Eggman would take the bait and-
YOU ARE BOLD.
He blinked at the message that appeared. Instinctively, his hands moved to protect the stolen data.
DISAPPOINTING. WAS HOPING TO SURPRISE YOU.
He licked his lips and wrote:
'If you expected to surprise me, you would have been better not saying anything to me.'
INDEED. PERHAPS I UNDERESTIMATED YOU. A MISTAKE THAT WILL NOT HAPPEN AGAIN.
Chuck tapped his fingers against the keyboard, before writing:
'Are you with Eggman?'
INDEED. YOU MAY REFER TO ME AS SIMPLY SAGE. I EXPECTED TO USE A HOLE IN THE CONNECTION TO SEIZE THE DATA YOU STOLE BACK BUT ALAS.
Chuck wisely refrained to talk about the five backups he did of the data - two in a closed circuit he developed unknown to the Zeti.
'Let's say I did take precautions. This data is only getting erased when I want to and not a moment after.'
THAT'S THE PROBLEM, ISN'T IT?
He paused.
'What you mean?'
I MEAN THAT YOU HAVE...ALL THE CARDS, AS THEY SAY. YOU COULD KEEP THIS DATA IN ORDER TO BLACKMAIL US IN THE FUTURE.
'I am a man of my word. If I am taken out of here, neither G.U.N. or the Restoration would known about it unless you wanted to. Eggman knows I'm not the type to say hollow promises, unlike him.'
UNFORTUNATELY, DOCTOR IS NOT CURRENTLY CAPABLE OF SPEAKING IN YOUR FAVOR. SO, ONCE AGAIN, I SAY I HAVE LITTLE REASON TO BELIEVE YOUR WORD.
'Not available? What about that presentation a month ago? Didn't...'
Then Chuck remembered the reports of Eggman seemingly being wounded post-battle by a mysterious assailant. Records of Badniks were scarse but...
'I see. So, in this case, trust in my word as a man of science. This is the best guarantee I can offer you in the moment.'
Silence. Then, after a minute, Sage answered.
YOU PROVED CAPABLE OF TRACKING US. THEREFORE, I SHALL BE INCLINED TO BELIEVE YOU. BUT BE WARNED...
The screen glowed red for a moment. From the speakers, a girl's voice said:
"Attempt to double-cross my father, and you will WISH to still be prisoner under the Zeti."
'Did...did she just went through my securities on that level?'
The screen returned to normal.
UNFORTUNATELY, I HAVE LITTLE TIME TO DELETE YOUR MATERIALS. THIS BATTLE YOU WON FOR NOW, AND THUS WE SHALL PROVIDE RESCUE FOR YOU.
Then a png of a hand washing the other appeared on the screen.
FOR NOW, FAREWELL CHUCK THORNDYKE. MAY THE FORCES OF THE EGGMAN EMPIRE LEAD YOU TO SAFETY.
The man waited for a few moments, wanting to see if she still remained on his computer. Seeing there was no sign of Sage, he put his back against the chair and slumped, tiredness taking him over.
Was...was he over his head with this plan?
...
Likely. But Chuck couldn't let doubt blind him. It was already lucky Zik didn't intercept his first message. Now he would be in high alerts from the clusterfuck that was the raid against Eggman.
He had no choice.
It was all or nothing for him and Chris.
