Dream | 3 Times is Too Many
"Wake up, Homura-chan. You need to wake up! Hurry!"

Your eyes spring open...you appear to be in a meadow. It's dark out, but the grass you're laying upon is already wet with due, the scent of apple blossoms filling the air around you.

You don't care, though.

You're too busy staring at the beloved face of your grandfather.

"Jii...san? Are you...?"

He reaches down, urgently pulling you to your feet and wrapping you in a powerful hug, "...not right now, Homura-chan. Follow me, we have to get out of here."

You don't know what's going on...how did you get here? Where were the others? You can't even see the moon, and that should always...

Your thoughts are interrupted by your grandfather grasping your hand tightly and breaking into a sprint. You almost trip in surprise, but regain your footing and follow...and find, to your shock, that you can only barely keep up. The old man is leading you away at a speed that is difficult for even a Magus, let alone a human. How is he even here?!

A horrific sound, like countless serpents slithering through muck, echoes behind you...you turn your head-

-and you feel the world around you crack, your mind screaming as-

Jii-san grabs you by the sides of your face, turning you to face him, "DO NOT LOOK AT IT! DO YOU HEAR ME! NOW, follow this path. Your home is beyond this forest...we will stop this monstrosity while you escape."

You move instantly, an instinctive obedience that you cannot resist compelling you to obey the command of the Akemi Patriarch. You sprint away, not looking back, along the lilac-lined path your grandfather was guiding you down...behind you, you hear a sound...and the trees around you seem to twist and contort, bending at odd angles as you make your escape. They seem to reach for you in ways you can't quite grasp, and you're forced to sidestep grasping limbs and erupting roots as you take flight.

Your try to run faster despite the hostile foliage, pushing yourself to the limits of your superhuman capacity, unable to simply will yourself free of this place for some reason...you do not know your grandfather's plan, but you know he cannot slow that thing for long. Despair whispers in your ear, taunting you with the image of your beloved mentor being torn apart by countless tentacles...

Despair flees in terror, though, as a voice answers the monstrosity...no, not a voice, and infintitude of voices, each carrying an impossible weight. Your grandfather's is loudest at first, but, as you make your escape, you can hear the voice of a young woman swelling ever larger...the trees around you quake, pulling away from the path, only to slam tight behind you as you pass them...shielding your escape, against all reason.

As you cross the boundary of the forest, you hear the sound of trees exploding behind you, broken by some mad power, and you risk a look back...

The forest is gone. You stand again upon your familiar hill, looking out over Mitakihara.

"Prima-sama! Where were you?! Everyone's in a panic! You just vanished in the middle of everything...are...are you alright?!"

The young Homura before you grasps a clipboard to her chest, looking around nervously, and you force yourself to calm as you pat her head, "Don't worry...I think we're safe for now. What happened while I was gone?"

The girl calms under your touch, nodding grimly, "The situation was stabilized. Tertia doesn't know what to make of the situation, but she insists you hurry to central immediately...things are looking very bad right now, according to her."

You straighten, "Alright, I'll go immediately."

Focusing your will, you prepare to relocate, only to be interrupted by the nervous teenager in front of you, "...um...are we going to be alright?"

You smile soothingly, "We will...things may be rough for a while, but I promise I'll find a way."

She returns the smile meekly, and you vanish with a nod...Tertia must be scared if she's got a girl this new out hunting for you...

---

You jerk awake with a gasp, shivering violently...your dream is already gone, but you faintly recall the face of your grandfather. What could have frightened you so badly?

Putting such things out of your mind, you sit up, stretching. Madoka, still dozing, slowly cracks her eyes open, "Morning already? Are you alright?'

You nod, smiling as you slip free of the plain white sheets of Mami's spare bed, "Of course...why wouldn't I be?"

She says nothing in response, looking oddly grim, "...Madoka, is something the-"

You're cut off by a roar from outside the bedroom, followed by a loud crash and the shouting voice of Kyouko, "GET THEM OUT, SAYAKA! WE'LL HANDLE THIS!"

Madoka leaps to her feet in an instant, looking frightened, "Hurry, Homura-chan! You have to transform! Whatever's happening out there-!"

You nod, "Right." In a violet flash, you're raiment springs into existence around you. An instant later, the door explodes inward, and the sword-wielding form of Sayaka appears through a cloud of dust, an unconcious blonde Puella Magi thrown of her shoulder, "We've got a problem, Homura...something weird just blew it's way into the building. Kyouko and Nanoha are fighting it. I'm going to get Mami to safety...are you coming?"

You can see in her eyes that she wants you to...but can you leave Kyouko and Nanoha to fight alone? You're not in great shape, but...

You look to Madoka for guidance, but find her biting her lip in worry, looking back and forth between you and the origin of the combat sounds, clearly no more decisive than yourself.

Sayaka's steely gaze locks with you own, a strange, focused calm written in her body language despite everything, "Well?!"

...if it's worth anything, this is not me being sadistic. This happened for a logical reason, although why is for you to figure out...and, no, you shouldn't have seen this coming.

[X] Flight

We just had a dream about Hastur, we belong nowhere near combat right now.

[X] Flight

Our Grief is 825/1000

We can't fight. Nope. Nadda. We'll have to have faith in our friends. Because that is way too close to witching out for my taste.

SWB is correct. I need to add Oriko's...ihi...I should probably also add an appropriate tab to the Center of the Mind for that kind of thing.

[x] Flight. Safe-ish distance, observe, figure out what the hell's attacking and why.
-[x] Use a grief seed on the way out.

Sayaka's a melee fighter carrying an unconscious VIP to protect. If she runs into something, she'll probably need our help more than Kyouko and Nanoha do.

On tactics, I don't think we need to be quite so conservative with grief now that we have two seeds. Obviously we can't be involved in too many fights due to sanity, but we can certainly time stop people out of danger. Given that witches seem to give multiple-charge seeds we can probably risk using about one full charge (spread out over a cleanse of course) per witch. Of course, enemies that aren't witches are somewhat more dangerous.

Presuming that this enemy is not a witch, Nanoha may be able to establish that anti-collateral barrier and probably has the advantage in that her attacks won't be hard-countered by the witch barrier's existence. Kyouko and Homura are at a small disadvantage against non-witch enemies simply because they burn through resources that aren't replaced by a grief seed after the fight, although miss melee less so.

Only 7 Sanity recovered (and a Stability Multiplier increase) after 5 hours of sleep? That nightmare really did a number on us. Anyone recognize the picture? I'm getting a Lovecraft influence from it, but I don't know for sure; that's just my usual gut response when I see tentacles fused to humanoid bodies.

Hm. Okay, while I agree that we should cover the retreat, we have resources (and thus, options) that most do not, especially when it comes to recon:

[x] Time stop
-[X] Quick recon: what is the situation? Who/what is attacking? Are Kyouko/Nanoha injured? Holding their own? Winning? (Expected usage: 10 seconds. Max usage: 30 seconds)
--[X] If fight is not going well, use Time Stop to evacuate Mami's apartment. Cover retreat with time-stopped machine gun fire (Expected usage: 1 minute. Max usage: 2 minutes)
--[X] Otherwise, end Time Stop and help evacuate Sayaka+Mami.
-[X] Cleanse immediately if Grief nears 900.

I don't think Time Stop is an appropriate recon tool in the face of an unknown enemy. A snapshot can only tell you so much, and there's still risk.
Risk? It's Time Stop; barring a situation like Ersatz where something hijacks her ability (since it apparently never belonged to her in the first place), or Rebellion where someone sabotages her from the beginning, literally nothing can affect Homura in this state because Time is Stopped. This is exactly the kind of situation where Time Stop is the most powerful and useful.

As for "a snapshot can only tell you so much," well that's true, but right now we know nothing at all, and a snapshot is better than making a crucial tactical decision in the dark.

Going with the simpler plan. If we find that Kyouko and Nanoha are in deep kimchee, we can timestop them out, but for now we should be OK to just observe. Plus, we have Sayaka with us, who has her own special observation skills.

While true, a quick bit of force recon shouldn't eat up much Time Stop (this guy took a full minute to clear an apartment, but he was going slow both because of inexperience and because he was worried about hostiles, which we won't need to in TS; hell, with 100/100 Marksman skill Homura could probably clear a room at a sprint, even without TS!) and, of course, zero real time.

It would also get us a much clearer picture of what's going on other than the no idea we have right now. Kyouko could be getting cut in half right now and we wouldn't have a clue.

Ookay, that actually clears lots of things up.
