Yea, this was expected.
[X] Why does this have to be her? Why does she have to go through this? First her mom tired to kill her and died... then her dad will do the same tomorrow... this isn't fair. Not to her!

[X] Run up and hug her, hold her close, make it known that she is loved, that you love her, Shoji loves her, that she isn't alone, and that you're so, so sorry. Sorry that she had to witness all this, sorry that she has to deal with all of THIS, sorry that you couldn't stop it. (Are... are you crying?)
-[X] Take her away from here with Shoji, hold her close away from the corpses, be two ears she can rely on. Anchors that she can hold onto.
-[X] Ask your Uncle if he could handle things out here

Edit: Thanks Isiri!
Edit Edit: I still want to hug Kohaku- but I have been convinced crying is out of character at the moment. So I took that part out! Maybe do the same? You do you.

Changed the final line.

Edit.
[X] ...You felt frustration, and anger. These people came to attack you and kill your friend, but you hadn't wanted to kill them. You hadn't wanted a massacre. You were frustrated that you couldn't do anything to prevent this, even when you put so much effort to prevent casualties. And you were angry because of the Callousness that Lilith displayed for Oracle, for humans in general. How dare she treated their lives as if they were worthless? How dare she?
-[X] Ask Raido to take over from here (this isn't a suggestion). Take Kohaku to the park, or a pizza parlor, or to the arcade. Just take her away from here, and don't leave her alone.

Yeah, I also expected this. Still doesn't make it less upsetting.

I hope this is suitably dramatic. For how Yumi feels, I'm trying to channel Tanjiro from Demon Slayers a bit. I always found Tanjiro's anger at Daki when she demolished the red-lights district to be tangible, and it seemed like it could be applied similarly here, with Lilith killing Oracle and her crew and seeing them as expendable at best, and Magatsuhi snacks at worst.

I know these aren't exactly intended to go together, but I think I prefer nmorrow's vote for how Yumi feels, and I know I want to hug Kohaku right now.

Cause let's be honest, Yumi's probably run into a lot of fucked up shit before this all started, if we want to go into the 'I need a break' characterization.

Breaking down in front of her probably won't help. Kohaku needs someone to lean on, not platitudes.

Besides, we don't even know Oracle that well. Regardless how upsetting it is, it doesn't make sense for Yumi to just start crying over someone who wanted to kill her and her friends.

We didn't want to kill them, but you don't cry for people killing people you were gonna make eat dirt. You get pissed off.

I wrote it more as Yumi feeling absolutely horrible that she couldn't protect Kohaku from any of this... those tears are not for the enemy, they're for Kohaku. From what I've read about how she's been characterized so far, she's been painted as a protector, someone who wants nothing more then to take all the hurt for themselves. I think adding a layer of "Yumi does not handle when she isn't able to protect people well" could be a good moment to show that Yumi, while a badass, is really not used to having to deal with... Mother and Father Hino's whole thing.

Also duality between Yumi having mom trauma (because of meeting mom and remembering she death) and Kohaku getting mom trauma is a story beat I see worth chasing.

Yumi is also still winding down from what's effectively an adrenaline boost. She's not just gonna start bawling. Kohaku is different because we don't know the relationship between them, but outside of Kohaku, Yumi has no stake. Everything that's happened has been for Kohaku's sake. If anything, Yumi crying would make Kohaku feel worse.

While interesting, it's also relatively unrealistic given her 'anti-yakuza background' thing. I doubt she could've saved everyone and it shows when Yumi looks on those days with regret. I would agree that Yumi would take it harder if that was her first failure, but it really shouldn't be. Everything is scaled up now, which is a a lot of pressure, but it's the same scenario.

People abusing and taking advantage of the ones Yumi cares about for their own gain.

The only thing in common between those is having a dead mother via violent supernatural causes. Outside of that, not a single thing correlates. I also don't think Yumi would like connecting her mom to Oracle in any way given what we know so far.

I would rather have that story beat be brought up after Kohaku tells Yumi about her. Just feels more natural to me.

I've been convinced that crying maybe isn't in character that the moment, so I took it out. Thought you may want to do the same!

Yumi really has had her character arc already huh. In the damn backstory of all places. This amuses me

We tried so hard, and got so far.

But in the end, it didn't even matter. They still did fall, and lose it all. But in the end, it didn't even matter. sigh

I assume the ones Kyoko had chained up to the balcony were drained too? What about Saotoshi, where'd he get to? Did Lilith count him being a former cultist and spare him, or did she Giga Drain him dry too?

Anyway, each vote lacks something to me; people can feel multiple things in very rapid succession in these sort of situations, so Operation Have My Cake And Eat It Too is a go:

[X] ...You felt frustration, and anger. These people came to attack you and kill your friend, but you hadn't wanted to kill them. You hadn't wanted a massacre. Frustratration that you couldn't do anything to prevent this, even when you put so much effort to prevent casualties. And anger, because of the callousness that Lilith displayed for Oracle, for humans in general. How dare she treat their lives as worthless? How dare she?
-[X] And why does this have to be Kohaku?! Why does she have to go through this? First her mom tired to kill her and died... then her dad will do the same tomorrow... this isn't fair. Not to her!

[X] Run up and hug her, hold her close, pull Shoji in, make it known that she is loved, that you love her, Shoji loves her, that she isn't alone, and that you're so, so sorry. Sorry that she had to witness all this, sorry that she has to deal with all of THIS, sorry that you couldn't stop it. DO NOT CRUSH HER AGAIN.
-[X] Tell Raido to take over from here (this isn't a suggestion). Take Kohaku to the park, or a pizza parlor, or to the arcade. Just take her away from here, and don't leave her alone.

So, uh, just one question:

Why the hell did Kohaku and Shoji leave our relatively-safe grandparents' home, in-universe? They could've stayed well away from where Oracle was expecting her to be, under anti-scrying wards and everything. I get the Doylist explanation -- story drama -- but I've been wondering this for a few updates now.

Not all of it, this is her season 2 arc -- coming to grips with her fears of losing her connection to humanity and becoming obsessed with/enamored of power, not caring about the harm caused to others, like maybe (I've been thinking) some of those Yakuza and other gangsters did with their power, in her eyes.

Thus that conversation with Kohaku some updates ago.

Someone later can bring up in story how she tried to take down several dozen people trying hard to kill her and her friends non-lethally (and succeeded!), how even after pushing her power to the maximum here in this fight, it was always to protect everyone she could, she let go of the power the moment she could, and how her first thought was to try and see if anyone survived or could be brought back. :p

I'm not saying Yumi would or should at any point go full Super Emoin', but if she ever encounters one of those preys-on-your-worst-fears sort of nightmarish demons (or people), Kohaku, Shoji, Raido, and Kyoko can all snap her out of those first parts of the spiral... or Yumi can remember herself, if possible. :D

In universe we didn't know about Oracle, and the only detection we knew Father Hino had was short range.

Plus, for all we know, Oracle may have been able to find her at our Grandparent's house considering she was buffed by Lilith. We may never know.

And to be completely honest, I hate that vote, because in my eyes Yumi fundamentally isn't wired that way. She does not get power addiction, she does not get why people would enjoy torturing and killing others just because they can, she does not get wanting power for the sake of power, she does not get any of it. She has seen it, sure, but she is psychologically incapable of seeing any appeal in it or understanding why anyone would.

That's my view, anyway.
