Behind the Hero: The Helping Hands
By SolarGemX
911 What's your emergency? Health is an important part of any humans life, be it metahuman or otherwise. The human body is an organism that is in constant need of nutrition and care; and if even one thing goes wrong it can cascade into a multitude of problems, that's where healers come in. Mind you I'm talking about the everyday doctor not Metahumans with Healing abilities like the famous Medicant or Viridian 97 of the Niji Riders, who take the wonders of medicine and flip it in its head; in all honesty especially when it comes with later. Unless your someone who finds the healing arts as a waste of time or have "alternative" means for healing, you want a medical professional to see you if there's something wrong with your body.
Everyone and their mother wants to be healthy, and this is especially true when it comes to the world of heroics. I don't think there's a hero or villain alive that wouldn't kill (Hopefully metaphorically) for faster healing in their line of work, to grow organs and limbs, to never need to be sick, to synthetizing antidotes and cures for poisons or disease at a fraction of the time it would take them to heal naturally. Sadly, many people would hound those with healing meta-abilities for that same reason, from what we know Medicant has basically disappeared from the face of the planet because of constant attempts to acquire their services forcefully and from what few rumors we were able to get Viridian 97 has actually been the…. Well not exactly "victim" since that woman is strapped head to toe in in armaments, but there has been at least 3 kidnapping attempts for her healing abilities. What I want to say is that Healing powers are RARE and there is very few examples of known healers in the world, but just because you cant regrow someone's limb in seconds, doesn't mean there aren't any "Medical" themed teams running around. Everybody is capable of helping and it just so happens that there's a team that specializes in helping during disaster relief or during your stay in a hospital. In todays episode of Behind the Hero, we take a look at the American Red Cross sponsored team, The Helping Hands.
The Red Cross organization has been around for decades, and Its purpose is to protect life and health and to ensure the mutual respect in human beings. It just so happens that they have a group of Metahumans in their payroll, with the express purpose of helping during times of crisis or helping patients during their stays in their facilities. Nobody knows how the team is capable of reaching several locations in the American territory, but some speculations include a rapid transport system, fliers or even a teleporter, but there has been no outright confirmations about any of the rumors. As for the team in question, non-have an outright "Healing" power, but they use what they do have in order to facilitate the healing process. Additionally, among the heroes in the 6-member strong team we actually only know the identity of one of the members, Gustatory. All others have secret identities hidden by the Hospitals. So, let's start with the only member we know out of the mask, Bruno Ferreira or Gustatory while at work.
Mr. Ferreira is young Brazilian man of around 28 years of age and currently works as chef making meal plans for hospitalized patients in various Red Cross Facilities. In his teenage years he attended a culinary school, where he learned a lot about nutrition and food preparation, everything was going well till he found about his innate metahuman ability, nutritional and taste control. Gustatory's power is useless for combat, he can control the taste of foods he prepares or comes into proximity with, being capable of changing their entire flavor profile at a drop of a hat. He can make food taste even greater than what it usually would and even change its taste, he once grabbed a slice of bread and made it taste light a high-quality pizza. While a neat party trick Mr. Ferreira actually disliked his power quite a lot, since he could always manipulate the taste of what he prepared he thought that once people learned of his ability, they would attribute anything he made to his metahuman ability and not to hours of effort and practice he endured to reach his level of skill. These thoughts led to future to quit his dreams of opening a restaurant and concentrate all his efforts in studying nutrition in other to become a nutritionist. Its during this point while being an intern in a hospital that his metahuman ability was discovered by the staff when he help a patient that refused to eat anything the hospital offered due to its taste, by changing the flavor profile in the meal, the patient eventually started eating again and soon made a recovery. Its thanks to this action that the Red Cross Organization approached Mr. Ferreira and offered a position as meal planner and maker in one of their hospitals, once he finished his diploma of course. A couple of months later and Gustatory was born. A fun fact is that Gustatory's second ability to enhance the nutritional value of food was actually discovered during his first few months as a hero, when some doctors notice that the meals that were been prepared somehow gave a far larger amount of vitamins and minerals that they had any right too.
The second and third members of the Helping Hands are Clear Aura and Clear Zone, the purifiers of the hospital. The only thing known about these two heroes is the fact that they are siblings, and they share similar outfits. Other than that, it's their powers that make them quite interesting. Both heroes have a similar ability to "purify." Clear Aura is capable of cleaning and purifying even the dirtiest of bodies of water, removing bacteria, parasites and more from it, making it perfectly drinkable. Clear Zone on the other hand is a walking Sanitation zone, everything 20 ft radius of him gets sanitized and sterilized, it even removes dirt, sweat, grime and blood. The hero can reduce his area of effect to just a couple of feet from him, but he usually keeps it a reasonable range when dong his work. Usually, the first one to help during disaster relief he usually helps getting patients to medical tents and then helps sterilizing wounds, medical instruments, and the area he is to help prevent bacteria from reaching victims that are in process of being treated.
Our Fourth member is the sanguine fountain, Blood Bank. Taking a doctor looks and making it black and red he looks like someone decided to make nurses emo/goth and ran with it. As you could probably tell from their name, Blood Bank's power is blood generation. Do you know the different Blood types and the term "universal donor"? Well, this hero takes that literally. Blood Bank is capable of generating a quite ludicrous amount of blood within them and is capable of changing it to any of the known blood types, not only he is capable of purging toxins and blood-based diseases from his body by continuously circulating his blood in different ways until he releases them from his body. While the purging effects are lost once it leaves his body, the fact that he can have any form blood makes him a frequent blood donor in hospitals and especially helpful during emergency transfusions outside of them. In addition to these known facts about the hero we have been able to collaborate with some secret sources about some less known facts about Blood Bank. If the rumors are to believe the hero actually has a pair of fangs under his mouth and can narrow his fingernails to the size of actual needles, letting them inject their blood directly into a patient, another rumor surrounding the hero is the fact that he has been seen speaking with Twilight Beast, the Transylvanian leader of the Blood Moon's over in Romanian territory, although nobody is sure what they spoke of, some more outlandish theories speculate that Twilight Beast was procuring Blood Bank's services as her own personal bartender in order to have constant supply of blood cocktails while in her free time. (Internet theories…. They truly never cease huh?)
The next member on the block the numbing force of the Healing Hands… Quieting Hand. This hero has a similar design to most of his fellow members, but also carries a Plague mask of all things. Nobody knows why they decided this was an acceptable addition to their uniform, but people speculate that it helps complete the look when they use their power on patients. You see Quieting Hand's power involves numbness and sedatives, that's right folks is the ever-wonderful anesthesia! If this hero is capable of touching you, they are capable of injecting your body with a potent anesthetic that numbs the touched area and eventually lulls the victim into a medical sleep. After multiple test Quieting Hand's power always administers the perfect amount needed to put a patient to sleep and without any side effects to boot. This power has been used more than once during operations or to tranquilize a rowdy patient in order to protect the doctors and nurses while they work. Apparently, one day the hero had to confront an armed thug that had infiltrated a hospital he was working at because he wanted to kill a patient within, Quieting Hand managed to sneak up on the criminal and sock him in the face while pumping him full of his anesthetic, sending him to Lalaland almost instantly.
The final member of the team is perhaps the more utility based member of the group, A female woman going by the Name Tri-Wind. While having a modified Female nurses uniform as her attire, she also has a set of transparent butterfly wings in her back, denoting a slight dysmorphic appearance. Tri- Winds power is quite similar to a previous episodes hero Strom Draco, wind, and temperature control, although too MUCH smaller scale. Her power lets her create small floating flower like constructs that can generate wind. Green flowers are just normal winds akin to a heavy-duty fan, red flowers generate hot winds akin to a heater or a sauna, and her most used flower, blue; generate cold winds akin to high grade air conditioner. You can probably guess why the blue flowers are the most frequently used, each construct is capable of lasting for about a week at a time and she can generate around 50 of them at a time, letting her cover an entire hospital, most of the time. One of the heroines mayor exploits was keeping an entire hospital in Colorado cool during a severe thunderstorm that broke down some of the hospitals generators. Having to re direct most of the electricity to make sure doctors were capable of doing surgeries, Tri-Wind with the help of some planners place her cooling flowers in strategic positions all around the premises to help maintain a cool temperature, including stacking several flowers in a single space in order to maintain perishables or maintain medicine from spoiling.
Quite an interesting set of heroes huh? While none of them are capable of outright healing a person with their powers, united they can make a person's stay in a hospital far more enjoyable. Is just shows you don't need to be the next Medicant in order to help the sick and just like many other "blue collar" heroes, powers are capable of facilitating things in the workplace. Well, this has been Behind the Hero signing off.
-1 hour and 45 minutes later after filming the episode-
*Ring* *Ring*
Hello? Yeah, it's me. What's wrong chief? What, turn on the
Ọsanyìn Conglomerated Industries stream that going on? Ugh, what happened now. I was planning on having a nice Christmas dinner with the fiancée, actually plan on popping the question soon. Yeah, thanks man, yeah planning on getting matching dresses *Turns on T.V* ok… lets see what caught on fire this time.
……………………….
WTF!!!
Authors note: Woops, sorry BTH you may have just caught the tail-end of a massive clusterfuck. Hey! SGX here with episode 11 of Behind the Hero, almost there with the 12 episodes promise huh? . Thank you Crazyone once again for this suggestion, sadly I don't know how to make a lawyer team so that one is staying in the abyss for now. Say hello to the Helping Hands, a team of hospital helping heroes that may not have outright healing powers, but each one has their own way of helping. Their name comes from the Pokémon move helping hand, and is actually the third name that I had planned for them. The earlier to names for the team was the Healing Hands, but that was taken by Fire Emblem Heroes recently, which then became the Hands of Panacea, which sounded kind of arrogant ngl, and then I settled on the Helping Hands. As for the inspirations:
Bell Voda (Clear Aura) was inspired by water purifiers and the Legendary Pokémon Suicune.
Denis Voda (Clear Zone) was inspired by sanitation practices during medical work.
Bruno Ferreira (Gustatory) was inspired by the medical term for taste and a bit on one of my previous non canon omakes Emeth.
Noah Moore (Blood Bank) was inspired by… well blood banks. Also, a bit of Himiko Toga from MHA.
William Hébert ( Quieting Hand) was based on numbness and one the characters from Fire Emblem Heroes known as the "Quieting Blade."
Harmony Peony (Tri-Wind) was based on the Yugioh archetype known as Aromages, fairies that use aromatherapy to heal the player.
And with that out of the way… yup. I don't know if I'll have the guts to do it, but I want episode 12 to be about Justice Unlimited, our pov team. I'm planning on doing it later after a couple of more issues, maybe touching on some of the now dead members (briefly) and touching on the heroes that are currently known by the public. Also, some of the current controversies surrounding them at the moment. The host of BtH actually likes JU, but may have to point out some of the rumors circulating them at the moment. If I'm incapable of doing it justice I may change towards another team I thought of recently, but that is my current plan atm. Here's hoping the next few turns don't blow up in our faces!
*Looks at point vault, which will soon have 12 points in it* get ready friend, you may find yourself empty soon.
