Huh, that makes sense. I assume we've been backing the Messapii with subsidies, and I'm not sure if it's for the better or worse that it didn't work out in the end. Definitely want to swoop in and gib clay before Taras can eat the rest of it, though.

Speaking of cordial barbarians, how have the Peuketii been doing? King Harpos quickly grew into one of my favorite characters with how he was able to make the most out of an utterly shit hand. Did he actually invest all the talents he got from the war into building up his kingdom? How does it look today? What's the relationship between them and EE?

No, the Messapii betrayed Eretria in a series of misfortunate events and Daxtus was killed.

King Harpos passed away and although he was able to secure his kingdom he couldn't secure his succession. His son Batavorta was a bit of an idiot, but he died under suspicious circumstances and King Gorgos took over, who appears to be more capable, though young. Relations remain loyal and cordial, though it's sometimes hard to get a full read on what's going on. The Peuketii are nevertheless as strong as they have been for a while with almost 40,000 people.

I admit I don't really get all the Spartan hate/love for Athens. Why exactly do so many of you seem to prefer Athens that much? Sure it's a democracy, for a certain value of that word, but that doesn't stop it from being an arrogant, heavily expansionistic and imperialistic power who happily oppresses other greek states and I think socially speaking it actually is more on the conservative side than the majority of other states, especially when it comes to non-citizens. So to me there really doesn't seem to be that much difference between it and Sparta.

Indeed I would argue that Athens would perhaps be the more likely power to expand its hegemony over our region/italy if it secures a solid win in the war than Sparta might be though admittedly you could argue that before its disastrous decision to get involved in Sicily it mostly ignored the west so maybe I am a bit to fearful.

In the previous quests we were accused of having an irrational dislike for Athens. This time around it's that we like Athens too much and are being unfair to Sparta instead. :thonk:

Eretria has no eternal allies, only eternal interests!

Which are precisely as obstinate or fickle as voting go.

How the heck did I miss this? Anyway, it's nice to return to Eretria. Eutychion, son of Eutychos, hefts his shield for Eretria!

Zeus has spoken, we must move to honour the gods, and only Antipatria are doing so in any concrete way. As for foreign policy, we will need great wealth in order to make the city worthy of the citizens, and Drakonia will ensure that the gold continues to flow into our coffers.

I had some time and went over the trade math, this is what I got:
Our current unmodified trade income is 155 Talents [69.75/0.45] (7 Staple Routes each worth 15 Talents and 2 Luxury Routes each worth 25 Talents).
This means an additional Staple Route would currently give us 6.7 [45% of 15] and an additional Luxury Route would bring us 11.2 [45% of 25].
An additional % of Tariff Efficiency would currently give us 1.6 Talents.

Our trade income is stated as 69.8 which when divided by 0.45 would give us a unmodified trade income of 155,111... But trusting in the QM to use nice numbers and comparing it to our old income: 29.8 / 0.35 = 85.1423... I realized that the trade income is probably rounded after the tariff efficiency is applied. As a result, 155*0.45 = 69.75 becomes 69.8.

Next I tried to find out what combination of Staple & Luxury Routes could constitute the trade income: IF we assume that all Staple/Luxury Routes are valued equally, then the only solution are 15 and 25 respectively. Support for this assumption comes from the fact that it explains both the current and the previous trade incomes [4*15 + 25 = 85 AND 7*15 + 2*25 = 155]. Still this should probably be checked again in future.

One last push to secure the homefront before we have to focus on the mainland.

I mean getting the lay of the land seems like a good idea.

I can't seem to find slave numbers? I imagine they are far less then other Greek City states of the time but i am curious about serfs as well considering how restricted they are what the numbers are and their numbers compared to slaves because right now slaves/serfs seem to be invisible, or at least i can't find them.

I don't love Athens, but I do hate Sparta. If Laconian misery requires Attic triumph, so be it.
