Magical Girl Quest - The Fire That Burns

I'm slowly realizing that we are literally playing as Fujiwara no Mokou

Possessed by Phoenix ho!

eh we aren't really?

The only real thing of note is that we both us fire and are magical?

We don't have Mokou's backstory

We don't have the immortality of the Hourai elixir.

We are actually pretty immune to the damage of our flames (Mokou is not, hence why they take damage in the touhou 14.5 fighting game from some of their abilities)

We have a sister following us that Mokou doesn't.

Our personality is different from Mokou's

We will eventually fly, use fire, and have white hair, maybe depending on how things go we might have a phoenix theme in the future.

No, but depending on how Japan rolls their dice Touhou might come to visit...
Touhou 6 hasn't even come out in the year 2000, and I doubt that with the butterflies coming up (such as the fact that I doubt magic will remain a secret until 2002) I doubt that any of the current "canon" content (since technically all touhou games before 6 are not necessarily canon) will actually make it to this quest in the same way.

Which might mean no spell card rules.

If the windows 98 games canon is prelevant we have the likes of Sleeping Terror Yukari, Mima, Sariel, etc to deal with, whilst lacking the "everyone lives due to spell card rules" that current touhou has.

Well Touhou having an effect on this reality might have a much darker effect than it would have if touhou stuff turned out to be real in our reality.

[X]Make the cave a little more homely, you'll be here for a little while
[X]Una has all of the ideas!
-[X] See if you can extend your transformation to produce a physical weapon. If you can't make anything solid enough to hold an edge, then try to make that material into a whip.
--[X] Then try to concentrate your fire into that weapon to make a superheated physical weapon.
--[X] Try to do the same with the barrier

So, I got an idea on how to make the solid weapon thing work:
-We already can summon our magical girl costume, which is solid
-Our costume is at least as resistant to our own fire as ourselves

So why not use the costume as the carrier for the heat rather than trying to hit stuff with intangible objects.

You would need to transform to do this.

I just noticed our Alpha and Omega ability affects both buffs and debuffs. This means that we are on our own in terms of combat capability unless we are able to control what it effects at a higher level.

You don't catch any humans, but you do sense that big mass of heat in the water. It seems to be slowly working it's way towards your general area, though you don't know if it's looking for you.

There go our plans for the ice boat.

I bet every MG have their own unique Barrier. Like in PMMM. :V

You are a horrible person. Have a Funny.

The entire situation is compounded upon by the recent disappearances near the Canadian border and the massive terrorist attack that hit one of it's northern cities just days ago. Much of the city was left ablaze resulting in tens of thousands of injuries and thousands of deaths. The military is staying completely silent on possible causes, however it has been noticed that they are sending enormous search parties north towards the Canadian border, with the border itself receiving a large garrison for the first time in over a hundred years.

Is now a good time to swear?
Either way, I think we should wait a little longer before making an attempt for the border.

Either way, I like what veekie did there. Let me steal it for myself and add a lot of stuff, as per standard procedure.
Now that I worked with it, there is little of the original left. It was a nice base, though.
I had to take the parts about making things superheated out for now, though; we need to have something that works reliably first. I also brought in the forceblast, more flight and... a little fun, if it works.
We are currently at a point where we have most of our basic utility; Forceblast should give us a little bit of crowd control... and after that, we should focus on training what we have instead of creating more and more. Getting proficient with the tools we have made and all.

If we have made a base, we can go back to experimenting and doing the more outlandish stuff, like buffs, healing others, our apotheosis...

[X]Make the cave a little more homely, you will remain here for today; stay vigilant with your thermal sense, though
-[X] See if you can catch a few smaller fishes by freezing the water around them; having some actual meat for a change would be nice
--[X] If this attracts whatever the big thing is, abort and retreat at once

[X]Una has all of the ideas!
-[X] Go a little deeper into the forest and transform; make sure to put out any fire that may break out from this as fast as possible
--[X] You really need a reliable way to protect your sister; the weapons you made before are a good start, but not yet acceptable. See if you can extend your transformation to produce a physical weapon.
--[X] If this does not work, make another elemental sword and keep its form stable while you hit things with it; if that works, see if you can imbue the stableness onto the fire constantly without your supverision

[X] Test how far you can control temperature, whether it matches your sense of heat's range, and whether it takes more out of you to use thermokinesis from a distance by changing the temperature of things in your range a few degrees up and down (not enough to set anything on fire). If you could keep a gun being fired at you the same temperature, the bullet might not fire, protecting Una and you from getting hit by a bullet. Also practice to see how many things you can change the temperature of at once.
-[X] Practice your 'Flight' some more, see if you can increase your momentum downwards and upwards as well as the height of your jumps; make sure not to go too high, lest you might be seen
-[X] Aside from your... more lethal means of defense, you have very little in terms of just keeping things away from you and Una. Pushing objects with your magical power did work before; go back to that and try to consolidate magic into a forcewave.

-[X] If you have time to spare after all of this, play with Una; see if you can make snowballs instead of globs of ice and have a snowball fight?

Also just watched a video song on entropic time.

I wonder if at higher levels we can reverse entropy with our field.

@Naron In your plan, could you add 'making sure not to go too high while flying'? We're close to a road and humans might see us if we're not cautious.

Edit: You should also make sure we're watching out for the mysterious big fish while fishing. We don't want to pick a fight with whatever it is while our sister is close if we can avoid it.

Edit 2: @Rukia Does Cerys knows which lake amongst the Great Lakes she currently is nearby?

"You honestly don't even know if it's a hostile fish of some sort, but you don't know of any sort of water creature of that size in Lake Superior"

While I'm at it, a quick note. I'll be busy until late today and I have things to do early tomorrow, so no chapter today.

That's a relief. If it was Lake Erie, it might have been Bessie we've sighted.

After all, in a world where belief is an actual force, it's more than likely that folkloric creatures are real regardless of the fact that they're based on magical creatures or not.

Hence why I've been looking into myths surrounding the Great Lakes.

While technically correct, you're also not thinking big enough. Deep Water Myths in general.

On the other hand, Demons running head first into Old Ones would be a magnificent sight to see.

Except Lake Superior is not deep enough for those.
Lake Superior has a surface area of 31,700 square miles (82,103 km2), which is approximately the size of South Carolina or Austria. [...] Its average depth is 80.5 fathoms (483 ft; 147 m) with a maximum depth of 222.17 fathoms (1,333 ft; 406 m).
If it was deeper than 1 km, you might have been right.

But as it is, we should be safe from the local eldritch abominations... unless one of them just happen to spend their vacations at Lake Superior.

Except, as you pointed out, Belief Shapes Reality. I know there are some legends about large bodies of water being connected to each other in their depths and such. And 100 meters is it's "Checking out something on the surface" depth. It probably can go much deeper.

Although we haven't really gotten clear feedback on how big it is, which I figure Cerys might be able to throw a ballpark size at? @Rukia

Also, @Naron @Sinarblood (since you two seem to be the planners here), I just wanted to bring up that lakes are flat, so an Ice Boat could probably be seen from anywhere on the shore. Not to mention our... friend in the lake. The other is that we got here much, much sooner than expected. Both we expected and the military would have expected. We need to go across the border soon. The noose is still closing, but it hasn't closed. Not yet anyway.

Okay... I see what you mean, but I seriously wonder when that happened.

Good point, I will edit that in.

Those are also good points. I already discarded the Ice Boat due to whatever lives in this lake, so you do not have to convince me on that one... but otherwise, I think it does not matter if we stay a little bit longer or not. The border was already reinforced and I doubt they will send a second wave to keep watch.

What I am playing for with the current vote is twofold, aside from finalising our core-utilities.
First, I hope that the tension will die down around the border when we do not show up as fast as possible.
Second, I want to increase Thermokinesis a little bit more; we have almost a kilometre of range to sense things at already, so we can easily scout out the border from far away and find a hole to slip through. No one expects us to know exactly where they have their guards from half a mile away and manning a whole border would take up far too much manpower. However, having more range is always good.

Speaking of which, let me add a line about keeping watch to the vote.

Also, why do I suspect tea with Cthulhu to happen before this story is over?

But forest bro threw us forward closer to the border far beyond what two little girls could travel it's going to be at the very least days before we're expected to even come close to the border and by then it'll be too late. The border will be guarded and we're more then likely going to have to fight.

We can cross the border, be safe from the military hunting, and then take some time to further our magic otherwise it's just wasting what forest bro did for us.

Eh, I do not think the situation is that dire.

We do know that a garrison was already stationed there; those guys will be especially vigilant right after taking their posts. The more days pass however, the less attentive I believe they will be.
This does not mean that I want to stall indefinitely... but on the off-chance that we get into a fight, I want to have our basics ready. Also, Una is nine and Cerys is thirteen. They have been wandering all day for several days, living off of fruits and water... I think they both should have some time to rest properly.

Also, we will not be safe from the military if we botch our attempt to pass the border by going about things in a rush.
I do suspect it will just be another Stealth-roll deciding over our fate, but oh well... maybe we can stack modifiers by being careful.

They will be most attentive in a few days when they expect we could show up. Their will be a lull in between the time we might have caught a ride to the border and then walked the rest of the way and when we could be expected to get their just by walking.
They have been wandering all day for several days, living off of fruits and water... I think they both should have some time to rest properly.
Cause they'll both be able to rest with the military in the area and not be able to once they are over the border? Dude, c'mon. At least make an argument that makes sense.

Yeah I fully discarded the ice boat idea with our "friend" in the lake. Moreso even after that when there turned out to be a Garrison on the border now which means increased scrutiny on the US/Canada border, when usually it is really lax except at certain points (The US and Canada border is huge wasting that much manpower with friendly allies who has deep economical ties and would be hurting themselves as much if not more than you if they tried to break it off, is a bit pointless).

Though I'd actually argue on the last point, in that I really don't think we got here sooner than the military would have suspected, if only because, for all the military is, I highly doubt that they truly think that the terroist attack was started by two young children only.

Rather they probably imagine we have an accomplice or was manipulated to do it by others. I certainly wouldn't be surprised if they suspect that we escaped the forest near a road at a rendezvous point with the masterminds behind this or more likely, some of their lackeys and drove off. In which case we easily could be in the area near the boarder trying to cross.

We do know that a garrison was already stationed there; those guys will be especially vigilant right after taking their posts. The more days pass however, the less attentive I believe they will be.

I'd also caution that when something is new there is a period of adaptation that people go through, so even if they are probably cautious right now, with high tensions, they'd also not be fully accustomed to the post yet.

Which means they probably don't have the patrol down to a science yet, and it could be that once they do the noose closes completely.

Also keep in mind that we aren't the only reason for this garrison at the moment, there are disappearances near the Canada/US border, and I doubt that the military garrison will become any less attentive for a while until that is solved.

We can't really stay here for to long maybe this day at most, to hopefully build up an edge with our abilities, then we go.

We can rest once we are across the border.
