Magical Girl Quest - The Fire That Burns

[x] Not right now, you might seek out the empress when you have a more stable position in these lands but you just got here, and you're in no hurry to place yourself under anyone's thumb.

Getting into a position of power is nice, even if it risks tenser 'diplomacy' later on.

Been a while since I was last here, but anyways it's likely better if we don't rush into things immediately.

Just a heads up to let you guys know that I am working on the chapter, but I need to finish my last University assignment first, which inconveniently I could only start doing today.

Also I've taken my beta's advice to write slower so I don't burn out like last time.

DIPLOMANCING
You dearly wish that you could just stay here and forget about this, spending your time in peace but... "Then we should find her before she finds us." We all know better than to hope it would be so easy. What are the chances that someone who would go about conquering a country would be reasonable?

???

Honestly, the worst part about all of this was the time you had to spend just sitting and listening to people complain. There isn't enough food to go around, the water is too dirty, raiders have set so and so on fire. Yes, I know, I've just spent the last six hours going through this with my advisors. You complaining to me does nothing to solve any of these problems. But what do they care? They have a problem and it's easier to complain to someone else than try to deal with it yourself.

You very carefully keep a blank face, mostly ignoring the man until his allotted time ends and he's hurried out of your throne room, if I can even call it that. It was previously a temple of some sort, but you'd mostly picked it because it was still mostly intact and your brother insisted that the decor would help your image. I wonder how many laws this would be breaking if I wasn't the law.

In a feat of irony that still amuses you, the old government had fled to Taiwan and were still complaining about you to whoever would listen. The rest of the world was a little bit busy with the war and then subsequent demon invasion. The world was a strange place these days.

The large doors at the end of the room close and you slump in your seat, holding in a shaky breath from escaping you until your guards filter out, leaving you alone. Well. A small door in the wall behind you opens, your brother stepping out with a smile on his face.

"You did very well." You roll your eyes as he stops next to you, ruffling your hair and leaving it dangling over your face. Not exactly the look of divinity you usually pull off, but you really can't bring yourself to care when it's just the two of you. "I know that you know this is pointless, but just bear with it for a bit longer. The office we set up will be accepting complaints next week." You sink a little further into your seat, enjoying the subtly hidden plush in the seat.

"What went wrong?" Your brother was getting predictable these days. You know he cares, but trying to distract you from some emergency you need to attend by having you sit through court?

He grimaces, scratching his chin as he sighs. "I don't know how you do that." And I'll never tell you, a little sister has to have her secrets. "A group of girls have spent the past few days on a straight course to here." You raise your eyebrow, wondering where the emergency part comes in. "All of them have powers like yours." Your heart skips a beat as your breath catches. Yeah, that would do it. "All we know is that they want to see you, they asked people for directions here." And of course they were all happy to point them to their new goddess.

"What do I do?" Your voice is a little shaky, images of these girls spotting you and pointing out your fraud. I bet they'll see straight through the lie, see that I'm barely even powered and then everyone else will see and they'll all turn on us-

"It'll be fine." His hand is back on your head, gently stroking your hair as you stop your downward spiral, going through the familiar steps of bringing your heart rate down and calming your breathing. "Your power should work on them as well, it has worked on all of the creatures you've fought before." You nod, grabbing hold of that line of thought. "Besides, we don't even know if they want to fight, they've been moving through our land peacefully enough." You snort, rolling your eyes.

The rules of courtly manner that had been hammered into your brain are blaring alarms at you. "They haven't even sent a message to ask for a meeting or anything!" Your brother doesn't say anything. "What sort of person would march straight for someone who's been taking control of the country and have a reasonable chat?"

Cerys

"Is this really the best way to meet her?" One of your new tagalongs murmurs to you, the blue haired girl visibly nervous as you approach the massive temple before you. You barely pay the guards any attention as they glare at you, but they've either seen their boss fight or were warned off, so they keep it to murderous stares as you pass.

"We've dealt with tyrants before, the easiest way to deal with them is to stop them from wiggling away and force a confrontation." She doesn't look any happier when you say confrontation, but she doesn't have a chance to say anything before you reach the door. You spare a quick glance at your partner as you feel Sabina step behind you, she nods and you turn back to the door, locking your vision on the smaller heat source sitting at the far end of the room. If she is going to attack, just as we open the door is the time for it.

A rough shove power with a deep undercurrent of magic meets the doors and you pull back the magic when you almost tear them off the hinges. Not even reinforced? You don't outwardly react as the massive doors swing open, eyes already finding the person you knew was there.

Your eyes meet and you feel a deep thrum of magic, familiar whispers drifting from the not-place that are impossible to make out. Her eyes widen as she stares at you, she takes a surprised breath as you feel whatever she was doing to hide her power slip. Hhm. The whispers intensify as that hunger resurfaces, its long absence abruptly ending as the engine deep inside you starts churning. You narrow your eyes as it slips just a little, the air humming at it licks across your skin and the floor slowly sags under your feet.

Her power coils in response, a twitch of her finger sending a deep crack down the arm of her throne, alongside a rather abrupt eep. What. Your power settles as blood rushes to her cheeks and you can't stop your eyebrows from rising as you stare her down. Feeling rather less threatened than before you rein in your errant power and slowly cross the distance between the two of you, absent-mindedly keeping track of the others as they follow you.

Astrid

You shiver as the staring contest infront of you ends, sharing a concerned look with Lin and Valeria before turning back and following the other group, biting your lip as your thoughts race. You want to make sure that this doesn't devolve into fighting, so that both sides can speak because surely the nervous looking girl watching Cerys approach can be just as reasonable. Lin had mentioned how she'd gone through a lot of effort to make sure that laws were being followed, no-one who was all bad would do that.

Not that you could probably do anything to stop either of them if they wanted to fight, you thought you were going to die just from being near them when they'd had their stare off. That same nervous energy fills you as you force yourself to quickly walk forwards, taking your place to her side as she starts speaking.

"What do I need to do to make you leave me alone?" You feel slightly faint standing so close to her, she feels like a roaring fire just inches away. "I don't want to be here, but I don't have a choice."

The other girl is apparently just as stumped by her rather blunt question as you are, taking several seconds to stare at her before replying. "I have no intention of bothering you." Something about the raw honestly in her voice just fits the situation perfectly. "Just follow the law and don't be a nuisance." The room waits in silence as Cerys continues her stare and the girl abruptly breaks character. "Hey, you were the one who came here to bother me!" She makes a pained twitch as you just barely hear a quiet noise from her head.

"Nothing?" Cerys drags the conversation back on track, sounding sceptical. "You had absolutely no plans of contacting me or trying to manipulate me to your side in any way?"

The girl makes a strange noise. "I didn't even know you existed until about an hour ago." You can practically feel Cerys blink at that. "In fact, if you hadn't come here, I probably wouldn't have known about you unless you did something I have to care about." Now it's Cerys turn to make odd noises, slowly turning to look at her partner -girlfriend- and silently communicating with a look. Now. You take a deep breath and step forwards without thinking any more, a feeling like ice creeps down your spine as the entire room turns to look at you -comeondoitsayit- and you speak.

"So-" You swallow with difficulty. "We all agree that there is no reason to fight?" You take a shaky breath at the silence. "Right?"

The queenempress nods and looks back at Cerys, who also nods slowly, blinking to herself. "I'm done here." She turns to Daiyu and her sister. "You have questions about home?" You step back with a sigh of relief as she nods, the sisters stepping forwards. The girl you'd tried to save before shuffles over to you, giving you her best reassuring smile as you pretend she isn't hiding behind you.

"I thought you were pretty cool..."

You give in to the urge to ruffle her hair as she pretends to mind. "Thanks, I was just worried they'd start fighting." And you were right, neither of them wanted to fight at all! Cerys was just this ball of cute-murderiness looking for her place in life. The Empress looked like a rabbit trying to pretend she was a lion, who also felt like she could splatter her across three streets at the same time. Why are all of these cute girls either really strong or really crazy. Is there some correlation between strength, cuteness and craziness?

I mean, Una is just adorable but she can still throw me across a street without trying.
You blink catching that thread of thought. Doesn't that mean she's hiding her crazy. You shake your head and throw away the thought, turning around to talk to the short girl half hiding behind you... Oh no-

Daiyu

The last few months of your life had certainly been very odd, but somehow you had never imagined that you would find your way to standing before the new Empress of China. That China had not had an Empress for several hundred years, or that the previous government were currently screeching in rage from their exile at the situation was really just the cherry on the very odd cake.

Still, the lands you had passed through to reach this Empress were mostly peaceful, the main roads were clear of debris and there were police and soldiers actively keeping order. Compared to how it had been during the beginning of the war, this was practically a paradise. Which really just made you want to dig into this woman's brain. What aims did she have for your homeland? How did she plan on ruling her people and more importantly. Should I stop her?

She might be the best of the warlords risen, but if she would put herself before her people, you will be the first to empty her throne.

Putting aside your rather morbid thoughts, you ask the thought that had been burning you as you passed through her lands. "What will you do when you have won?" Her lands were peaceful, too peaceful, even before the war there was more crime to been seen than there was now. The only conclusion that made sense to you was that they were so terrified of someone that they dare not... You don't speak your suspicious, content to observe for now.

"Bring peace, then enforce the law. It has been a long time since these people have known stability, it will be a long work to bring them back into the country." She slips into Chinese half way through, her words sounding much more confident is your native language. You accept her words as they are for now, she hasn't given you any reason to doubt her. Beyond being another Warlord in all but name. You close your eyes and take a deep breath at the thought, letting your instinctive distrust flow out with the air. "And what about you?" You hum and Cerys stares at you, letting you take the question for now. Not that we actually have a plan to go off of.

"I think, that we'll look for somewhere quiet to settle down." She looks faintly confused, though she hides it very well. "It has been a very trying few months for all of us." You leave exactly what hanging as you move on. "I do not think it would be a bad idea for us to remain in contact. You seem like a relatively new girl, perhaps we can exchange services for favours. I am sure that you have many questions about any rather abrupt changes in your life as of late." She takes a moment to process that, eyes narrowing as the implication clicks. Yes, we probably can answer many of your burning questions.

She inclines her head slightly, the practised motion looking slightly regal. "I think, that this will be a most f-fortuitous meeting." You keep a blank face as she stumbles over the word briefly. "We have quite a few things that we can offer one another." You smile and she returns it, apparently not having noticed that she's just ceded the conversation to you. By saying that I know things she doesn't and then her conceding other talking points to offer a trade. She must be pretty desperate or inexperienced, probably both.

You step back to your partner's side, the blank look on her face not betraying that she definitely didn't understand a single word that passed between the two of you, just trusting that you would argue in her best interest without hesitation. Your fingers slide in-between hers and she grabs you back without a word. Switching back to English, you make a fair offer. "We would like a plot of land that we may own without issue, it should be fairly isolated, but not too far from a major town or city. What price do you name?"

She squints her eyes and slumps in her seat, forgetting to pretend to be royal while she thinks hard, she almost opens her mouth to speak, but pauses to consider for a second more. "I would like to know the nature of how powers work, and where they come from." You frown slightly, but a shared glance with your sister finds you reluctantly agreeing. All in all it wasn't actually all that much of a request compared to what you were asking for, it was basically the most basic of basic knowledge for a large plot of land that is essentially it's own country, run by you.

"We are no longer Humans." Her eyes widen as you start off from the deep end. "The planet is alive and has created girls with magic that she calls Magical Girls." You give her just long enough to look thoroughly confused before continuing. "When you become a Magical Girl, either by her making you one or through a natural process, you gain a certain association with two concepts. I will not share with you what our are as they are deeply personal, but I am sure that you can figure them out by examining yourself and your power." She manages to control her expression, but it's obvious she's still incredibly confused.

"Your magic will almost always associate with these concepts and as you grow stronger, you will become more closely tied to them in turn. Be careful with attempting to emulate another's magic, it does not always end well. If you do attempt it, you should have an assistant on hand." She's silent as she absorbs your words, slowly nodding after a few minutes and clicking her fingers, using the motion to try and hide her other hand pressing a hidden button. You raise an eyebrow until you see an assistant quickly move across the room, stopping in front of her throne and bowing deeply.

"Take my guests here to the map, they may choose a two by two kilometre area anywhere in the country." You dip into a slight bow along with your sister as you reach the end of your conversation, long ingrained habits rearing their head. "Send someone to make sure there are no issues and bring a phone." She smiles at you and you smile back, nudging your partner slightly until she does her best attempt. "I believe that this is the start of a long and fruitful relationship."

Everyone follows the short man leading you into a side room, a great map laying across a table and a badly hidden beanbag chair peeking out from one of the corners. You snort, nudging your sister and eyeing it. She smiles and leans over to whisper to you. "You know you would do it if you could." Yes, yes you would. Actually, yes, yes I will. Cerys looks slightly disturbed as you turn your eyes on her, doing your best to copy her little sisters stare. Evidently you are missing some critical aspect of it, since it makes her cheeks flush a little instead. Hmm. You ignore your sister as she quietly giggles to herself, Una's eyes practically sparkling as she stands by her side.

Cerys

You've done your part and are satisfied with letting Daiyu do the rest of the negotiating, she always was much better at it than you. Besides... You look to your side, noticing the subtle shifting Sabina continues to make as her silence stretches on. "Is it..?" She nods, the movement slightly jerky as one of her hands plays with the hilt of her sword. She's kind of cute when she's embarrassed. You slowly nod as well, waiting for her to say it. It would be cuter if I didn't know what her power is doing.

"We get things for doing favours? From the fake queen?" You resist the urge to smile as the attendant looks up, offence on his face before shrinking back for some reason. These people are strange.

"Yes, we do." She nods, gathering her courage.

"Can I... fightplease?" You blink, thinking it over for a moment before nodding.

"Of course you can, I'm sure she will be delighted." She lets out a sigh of relief, and you smile. She's been very good with her restraint in the past few days, she hasn't tried to stab anyone even once. "Don't think I'll let you pull ahead of me." A familiar look sparks in her eye, the challenge she'd thrown down to you making them light up. You turn your head to look at Daiyu as she raises a hand to flick the back of your head, her finger rustling your hair as it slides past.

"Don't get caught up in the moment so easily." She looks adorable when she's annoyed at you. "This is our chance to just... fade away." You bite your lip, feeling something like guilt or shame coil in your stomach. You'd always thought about getting away from Gaia and her forcing you to do things, but now that you have your freedom and not days later you are thinking about jumping back into the battle. You hate the idea of your sister being made to fight but... Maybe I'm a little broken too? Your eyes meet your sword, a little smile of anticipation sitting on her face. I can't help but feel kind of eager.

Cerys - Go with Sabina?

Didn't we already get told IC by Gaia that this info is wrong?

We're still Human, just not Mortal, and Gaia didn't quite create the concept of MGs?

Time for little sister to strike out on her own and start making her name!

With best sword to keep an eye on her, of course

I really don't want to just dive into battle again, but I also don't want to leave Sabina alone.
