Magical Girl Quest - The Fire That Burns

Remind me please - what is our APT progression in here? It doesn't seem to be a 1+1/5 levels, since we'd only have 4 attacks for now.

Same question for the other characters - their weapon seems to be missing this trait.
Except in certain exceptions noted upon creation, every MG gets +1 ApT for every fifth level.

Cerys started with 2 ApT, though. As did Daiyu and Sabina.

Worth noting, just for reference, that in the other quests using this system its usually one every 5 levels, but sometimes its one every [some other number] levels.

[some other number] is almost always between 3-8. If that's the case, it might not get noted when they first become an MG, but will be noted the first time they reach a weapon level that causes their APT to increase.

The big exceptions, who will basically always get noted right away, are the people who do something like gain 1 every level, never gain any, do something like gain 2 APT every 5 levels, or have their APT scale with something else entirely.

[X] Go Right
-[X] Keep the flames up in your whole reach and don't stop them from spreading outward; always stay under cover of your fire and keep moving
--[X] Fly either at ground level or higher, depending on how high you can get the fire
--[X] Ask Omega to eat anything incoming except your fire. You need that.
-[X] Prepare Thermal Spears during idle time and rain down volleys on armoured or protected units coming close to your inferno

For example, CW's quest on QQ has the protagonist gain an attack every even level, 1/2 progression.

Due to lack of clear rules stating, and judging from the examples of White Knight (LVL 5 weapon, 15-ish attacks) and Nepgear herself, I've always thought that 1/5 levels is the "gish" progression - something reserved for those who aren't melee specialists, high speed specialists, or artillery/magic types (those get SLOWER progressions).

With Cerys being the DPS with magic flavoring, 1/5 is fine for her.

White Knight is a bit unclear. Remember that not everyone starts with 1 attack per turn. Hard to tell how much of that 15 is what she started with and how much is from leveling up.

There's a range of APT that's normal for each growth affinity, but people can be outside of that range if it makes sense. For example, if someone dual wields but it doesn't make sense to put Double Hit on their weapon, you might give them half the typical Base Damage of their growth affinity but double the typical APT of their growth affinity.

Another good example is Summit, who gains 1 APT every 8 levels.

Honestly, we are going with a mostly unified approach because it is much easier to keep track of.

Plus, we kind of have several dozen MGs sitting in the Workshop, all of which we would have to adjust if we changed it now.

Just add a note in Level Up that "unless noted otherwise, a Magical Girl gains an additional attack on every 5th level of her weapon". And no need to adjust.

Canon Omake: What Could Have Been - The Fire That Bakes
What Could Have Been - The Fire That Bakes

"Here you go, mister. That makes exactly six pounds."
"Oh, what a nice coincidence. Here."
"Thank you! Please come again!"

Cerys watched with neverending amusement how enthusiastic her sister was while not sneaking cake. She quickly put their money into the register before whirling around to talk to the next customer, all the while waving goodbye to the elder man as he left.

Her relationship with their patrons was mutual, the Magical Girl noted. As much as Una loved taking orders from them, they seemed to cheer up from being around her boundless positivity.

A few seconds before the alarm went off, Cerys already had her eyes on it and started to weaken the flames slowly; long months of practice paid off as she had long since mastered the art, pulling near-perfectly baked bread out of the oven with precision and not the slightest care for excess heat. Some new customers might be looking, but most people here were used to the sight already.

They made quite the pair at ten and fourteen years respectively, with some wondering how Una was allowed to work and many more confused about how a privately owned bakery managed to keep up with the corporate competition in London's rainy streets. Of course most had no idea that both of them used their own tricks to keep business profitable.

As the morning rush slowed down and things became more quiet, a pair of girls entered with their coats drawn tightly. Once the warm air embraced them however, they both sighed in relief and took them off to reveal familiar faces. Cerys finished putting down a plate of cake into the display case before nodding at both in greeting. Una on her part almost flew out of her little apron as she tacklehugged them. "Morgan, Karen!"

Their visitors caught the ballistic girl with an ease that spoke of the many times they had been greeted like that, spinning her around a few times while the few patrons smiled at the sight. The older sister stepped out from behind the counter to greet them as well, bumping fists with each of the girls before quickly righting Una's apron. "You're a little early, but that's fine. Go on ahead, Una."

"'Kay! Come on, Morgan!"

It said a lot about Una's mood if she looked forward to studying. Cerys suppressed a snort before throwing a glance at Karen, the blonde already having sat down at a table in the corner. "The usual?"

"Sure."

So while Morgan was pulled away by an enthusiastic and strong Magical Girl, Cerys prepared a cup of tea with practiced motions; it was soon placed in front of the eternal girl, together with a slice of freshly baked apple cake. "Here you go."

Seeing that there was no one currently needing service, Cerys sat down opposite to her benefactor with a weak smirk. "Anything new?"

They both knew Karen did not come out of her office unless something urgent was the case. Normally, that was. The Clocktower's leader made it a habit to escort Morgan for her lessons with Una, though they kept up the game of acting as if something had happened just for fun. Karen shrugged, pushing away a stray strand of her as she nibbled on her cake. "Things might get ugly soon. Remember the barrier? That's falling soon."

"I'll be here."
It was a quiet message, just like all the other times Karen tried this trick. They had an agreement on this matter.

The blonde only smiled while offering a shrug and another piece of news: "The Counter Force brought in another girl, too. Chinese, I think?"

"And your baguette can't beat her?"
Karen waved that off with a roll of her eyes, the topic being gone as fast as it appeared. Both of them smiled over the banter, yet there was a silent understanding between them. "Perhaps. I haven't given the order just yet."

Cerys soon had to return to the counter and Karen kept observing the budding woman, lamenting how much she wanted to get her capabilities for the Clocktower. Still, the agreement she got after Morgan brought her was better than nothing. In exchange for some help and a bit of money, Ignition Knight and now also Eternal Knight would protect London.

All it cost her was some favours to make the law overlook two minors owning and working at the place, as well as having Morgan out of the field to teach. The money was a trivial amount anyway... and in turn she got a most terrifying guardian for her base of operations.

Nonetheless, the old lady had been surprised by some of their business practices. Neither heat nor cold bothered this shop, as it always held a cozy warmth or a pleasant cool depending on the season. Cerys got around the cost for fuel and electricity by substituting magic. Una did something the blonde could hardly even guess at that allowed to keep the wares in a state of 'freshly baked' for several days, allowing for them to sell nearly everything they ordered from their suppliers and securing many loyal customers.

Karen finished her drink at last and got up, gently placing the plate and cup on the counter with the money she owed. The girl insisted she had no need to pay, but having a little additional rapport never hurt and was worth more than a few pound.

They exchanged nods once more and the blonde was on her way, shaking her head almost imperceptibly. It was a waste of talent, but she also felt... a little warmer, knowing that despite what Gaia made her do, she managed to wring this weapon off her hands and allow her to be actually happy.

That had to count for something.

INFINITE ENGINE
The only thing the Counter Force has shown that could hurt you is the four barrelled thing, the Clocktower had a lot of different ways. Eliminate the greatest threat first. You rise into the sky, pulling the sphere of fire with you as you go. Omega, can you hold back from affecting my magic? You gain speed, barely noticing when you immolate soldiers you pass over. Omega? It doesn't respond and you grunt, putting aside your idea for the moment and starting to build your stockpile of spears.

Once you have ten, you stop, pushing the fire out of the way to let you look around. There. You see explosions, the distant tingle of magic being used. Under attack. Your fire rises around you, cutting off your view of the world. You feel bullets start to enter your sphere as you close and turn slightly, using their path to guide yourself into the base proper.

The fire only intensifies, none of it coming close to hitting you as you finally feel buildings in your range. Bunkers. You flare your fires as hot as they go, hardly noticing the gunfire quickly stopping. That is, until you feel little zones of cold that you can't touch. That armour. It doesn't seem like they can see you, but you frown, building up another ten spears. Trying to leave? You fire a pair at the closest one, throwing him through a melting wall with a deafening crash. Not dead. You didn't think that their armour could resist that much heat so quickly, maybe they have some kind of temporary boost?

Shaking your head, you throw four spears at the trapped soldier, nodding when they punch through him without difficulty. One time defence? You send a single spear at another, watching him be ploughed into the wall next to him, dazedly getting up a second later. Don't waste excess spears. You send the first spear's twin to finish him off, quickly building and sending the spears out as you pick off the soldiers wherever you can.

Nothing interrupts your execution, five minutes passing before you finish the last of those who couldn't escape. The base beneath you is completely slagged, only the HQ resisting your fires, just like the last one. Too much effort. There is probably a few important people in there, but you aren't there to kill them, just stop them from killing you.

You turn to leave and feel something breach your flames, the warning giving you enough time to spin to the side and lift your sword in a block.

(Ignition Knight: +565 Base Resilience, +456 Magic Modifier, +204 Flight = 1225 Total Reduction
Burning Rain: +1000 Base Damage, +400 Ordnance = 1400 Total Damage

Ignition Aura: 15% Reduction (1400 - 210 = 1190)

Ignition Knight Health: 2205 - 0 = 2205)

It misses you by a hair, exploding several metres behind you and barely even ruffling you.

You have no clue where that came from, outside your range at least, so you drop your flames so you can see. Your eyes scour the ground and see nothing, flames having melted everything completely flat, so you look to the sky. It's not until you see a flash in the distance that you find them, the shot lighting up a shaded forest, still too far away to make out if it's a tank or something. Still, with the ability to see it coming, you easily dodge the next shot, the explosion barely ruffling you.

Too far for most spells. You don't want to get closer, it'll only make dodging harder. Only one that works from here. You start building magic, waiting for them to take their next shot. Hopefully they have some sort of recharging time.

The next shot is closer, exploding right next to you, though it's still too far to do anything. It's getting more accurate. Well, it's a good thing you were about to obliterate it.

Your spell crosses the distance quickly, and though you can't see the person shooting at you, you can feel a sudden spike of magic as it collides with the hill.

(Juggernaut Wave: +20,000 Base Damage, +1389 Magic Modifier +2138 Faster Than You = 23,572 Total Damage

Target Is Not There)

The hill crumbles beneath your spell and you see flashes of gunfire, watching the remnants of the hill to see if the attacker is going to resurface. Didn't get them, maybe the fall did. You purse your lips and start flying, ready to dodge any sudden shots. Which is a good thing, seeing as another shot races towards you from the shadow of the trees, a sideways kick from a sword pushing you out of danger.

A few seconds later, you feel a person enter your range, an incredibly hot and massive gun cradled in their hands as they hide in the shadows. Got you now. Fires quickly grow on the trees around her, spreading outwards as fas as you can push them, dropping into the trees and out of her sight. Who's hunting who now. She jumps away from the tree she's resting on, a loud whine audible to you from two hundred metres away is quickly followed by her gun sweeping in a circle, cutting down all of the trees in a twenty metre radius. Not going to help you. You crank up the heat and she starts gasping as the grass burns, smoke filling the air like fog.

She turns and runs, darting forwards in great leaps every so often as you start flying just above the trees, staying right on her, dragging the heat from behind forwards and doing your very best to see if you can set her on fire with air temperature alone.

Suddenly, you feel a big car of some kind enter your area, repelling heat around it and driving in a straight line towards your prey. It's too hot for you to be able to quickly make some kind of ice wall, so you just rush towards your target, feeling her start to slow down, little flames catching on the corners of her clothes.

You almost get her when you feel her start stumbling, but pull off at the last moment, the massive car ploughing through the trees and skidding to a stop next to her. A door pops open and they grab her, dragging her back into the vehicle as two people slide out of the side facing you. How the fuck? The two of them are obviously magical girls, this close you can even tell that the girl quickly panting in the car as it tears away is as well. Three magical girls.

You don't let up on the heat as you stare at the other two, building up magic as they quickly jump towards each other, joining hands before pointing at you and shouting in unison. "Divine Wrath" The sky splits open and you have half a second to feel the hairs on your arms tingle. OMEGA

??? POV

You'd closed both sets of eyes when your spell struck, but even then you were blinded and deafened, just the vague sense of distance between your bodies and their joined hands keeping them together.

When you can finally see again, you can't resist the urge to pump your fist, with both bodies. "HAH! And they doubted me!" You bounce on your feet, watching the dust settle with a grin. She wasn't so tough. Or... You chuckle. I'm just that awesome. Your mirth doesn't fade as the dust settles, waiting until you can see her body, just in case.

Something niggles at you, that new sense you'd been told about letting you feel something in the air. You hum, tightening the grip of the hands joined, ready to recast your spell, just in case.

That sense abruptly turns into pain, like something is trying to claw it's way into your head and explode out of it at the same time. Dual screams sound from your bodies as they stumble back, only kept from falling over by the grip they have on each other.

You force one of your eyes open as the cloud of dust is blown away in a burst of dark red, a wall of magic hitting yo—

You drop to your knees panting, the impact cratering the ground a dozen metres around you as you struggle. It's too much. The sheer amount of magic coursing through you was overwhelming, flaring from your body like a living bonfire. I can't hold this much. Sweat drips from your face as you plant your arms into the ground, barely keeping yourself from collapsing, the world melting and freezing and falling apart at the same time.

[] Hold on to it, force it under control.
[] Let some of it go, just enough to relieve the pressure.

So... it seems we have a rather clear choice there. Take the risk for more power, or play it safe.

Mind, I have no idea what either option actually entails. But I know that Una and Cerys both want to become stronger. Playing it safe does not make do after that kind of decision, chances have to be taken.

Hrrm. Part of me is beginning to wonder if all MGs going forward is going to have a sub-theme of 'can blow up friggen everything.' thanks to belief influence from Cerys, looking and thinking about what we've seen. Though it's probably more likely that's just the style of these two since best way to answer a speedy blaster like Cerys probably indeed is to blast her first.

...Too much magic?...Part of me wants to try a write in to modify that 'bleed it off' thing, from just sort of releasing raw juice out to something more like an intentional creation.
Problem is, when you're under pressure is a terrible time to try that.
On the flipside, we can hold it, or try to, but I personally suspect that ends in exploding if we fail the rolls.
Releasing...I think boils down to a question of what, precisely the form we release it in. It could turn into a lightning dischage (what we just ate) some form of thermal energy (Cerys's natural magic expression) Omega destruction (Omega nibbles on it as it passes by her) or just raw magical juice.
Exploding probably results in simmilar questions asked.
What I'd like to do I think...Is this:
[] Hold on to it, force it under control.
-[]When you get home, talk to Gaia about the alpha side of your abilities-you want to try making something.
...
I thought Omega basically auto-casted Juggernaut Wave at the thunder-magical girl but I guess not.
