You lift a hand to point at the girl she brought back with her. "But you did it too!" Your objection sounds just as flimsy as it feels, but the new girl shifts under your stare, looking between you and your partner.
Who goes straight for the throat. "Did you even ask this time?" You nod, pointing at the other other girl, who was sitting in the corner just as awkwardly.
"She followed me home." You ignore your sister as she collapses into giggles again, watching Daiyu's eyes turn back to the girl sleeping next to you. "She was asleep." Her eyebrows raise and you reflect on your statement and resist the urge to wince. Yeah that-
"Did you kidnap a girl while she was sleeping?" You feel an accusing stare from the new girl, the awkward silence filled with the sound of your sister gasping for breath.
"No?" That shouldn't sound like a question. "I mean no, she was hurt so I put her to sleep before carrying her here." The silence stretches on for a long moment before your partner lifts a hand to rub her face, armour fading away as she sighs.
"Did you ask before putting her to sleep and carrying her off?" You try to think of a way to phrase your 'no' in a good way, but she takes your silence as an answer of it's own. "Dear, we've talked about this." You nod before halting, suddenly remembering the other half of this argument.
"Wait, who is this then?" You look at the new girl, who was staring around the room in something like fascination. Your brief moment of triumph is squashed as she huffs and lifts a hand to the girl.
"I asked if she wanted to come with me." You open your mouth to- "And, she said yes." You close your mouth. She at least seems to understand your embarrassment because she shakes her head. "We'll talk about this later. In the meantime." She looks at the new girl. "Introductions, my name is Daiyu, this is my partner, Cerys." You stare at her until she slowly lifts her empty hand.
"Hello?" She clears her throat before trying again with more confidence. "My name is Lin Shu." Her eyes travel over to Sabina, who has been quietly sitting on the other side of the sleeping girl, watching the room. You give her a little nudge, the feeling of a cold finger on her neck.
"My name is Sabina." Good enough.
Cuifen chimes in from her place, having wrangled your sister back into sitting upright. "I am Cuifen, and this is..." She deliberately leads her statement and your sister latches on to the offering.
"'m Una!" A smile sits on her face, a real smile. She seems to be doing better? "Welcome to the h-" She cuts herself off with a quick glance at you, mentally taking several steps backwards. "It's nice to meet you?" You resist the urge to roll your eyes at her questioning tone, turning to the other other new girl, who takes the offered prompt.
"I'm Astrid~" She certainly sounds a fair bit more chipper than she had a minute ago, something about the exchange settling her nerves. "I think you were just going to answer my questions..." Cuifen nods and gives a side eye at her sister, who steps over to the trio with her new guest and sits down, Lin slowly settling beside her.
When they start talking you split your attention between watching the new girls around your sister and listening to their questions.
Daiyu
"As to your earlier question." You look at Astrid, giving her a second to recall her question. "By 'one of us' I mean a Magical Girl." You pride yourself on your pokerface, and it takes a significant amount of your experience to keep a straight face as you say that. Why did she have to pick such an absurd name. It's not even like you can deny that is what you are, the name just feels right.
The new girls look like they aren't quite sure how to take that, so you move on with your explanation. "I don't know why we were given that name, but it is what it is." Astrid raises a hand, and you nod at her.
"Do you know how our powers work? They don't make much sense..." Lin nods as well, looking a little perturbed at something.
"Not really?" You shrug. "Most of our powers work differently, apart from the few we have that work together." You tilt your head to your partner, who's making an admirable attempt to stare through your guests souls. Not that I really know how her powers work, she just might be. "Cerys and I grow stronger while we are fighting together, but it only works within our team." They look between the two of you, Astrid's eyes tracking something through the ceiling with a thoughtful frown.
"Otherwise, how I use my powers doesn't really have much in common with how she does. In fact, her powers are completely different in function than mine are, despite the fact that we are part of a team." Astrid looks back down to you and raises an eyebrow. "I don't know how it works, but it basically means that there are a couple of other girls who have powers that synergise extremely well, we usually share a theme in our names and transformations as well." They both nod at that and you pause for a second, waiting for the 'how do names work' question to appear. When it doesn't, you clear your throat and ask yourself.
"I thought you'd ask about how names work." Lin lets out a hum and shrugs.
"It makes sense to me." Then she goes back to considering whatever she was thinking about, Astrid nodding as well. Now what does that mean? None of this made any sense to me when I was starting out.
"Why are you here? It doesn't look like you've been here long." She eyes the rough wood around her.
"We haven't, it's only been maybe an hour since we arrived." They look curious. "We got kicked out of our last home by the planet." Lin stops, staring in utter confusion while Astrid looks at the sleeping girl, letting out an understanding ah. "And we are here to..." You aren't really sure how to answer this question, but thankfully Cerys steps in for you.
"We are here because we wanted to be as far away from everything as we could be." Not how I would put it, and I don't think Gaia is going to agree. "Speaking of which." She sits up a little, the slight adjustment making the two new girls stiffen. "Lin, what can you tell us about the war going on here?" She looks a little flustered to be put on the spot, but manages with respectable grace.
"A new Empress reigns in these northern parts, she must be a... Magical Girl as well." Your eyebrows shoot up at that and you feel the temperature in the air flicker slightly. "She has stabilized her land by force and she offers peace to those she fights." Lin grimaces, but still somehow does so gracefully. "She does not always accept surrender and she has killed many hundreds of people, but her lands are peaceful, the war does not reach them there."
"I thought we were in the north?" She nods.
"We are near the front lines." Of course we are. You share a glance with Cerys, almost physically feeling the atmosphere in the room shift as she straightens fully. Lin pauses for a moment before you give her an encouraging nod. "Everything south of that is still in open warfare. There are warlords who have taken control of regions of space, but they often change hands." You frown, already guessing where your partner's line of thought is turning.
