Magical Girl Quest - The Fire That Burns

Everything

...

But for now, I'll settle for information on some of the other existing magical societies

Gaia! What is she doing now?
Basically this

Oh! Or maybe something about the creature sent by Gaia that killed that one magical girl.
As of this moment, Gaia has not killed any Magical Girls in over five hundred years.

More about magical girls!
What do you want to know?

But for now, I'll settle for information on some of the other existing magical societies
What do you want to know?

I'd like a snippet about one of Gaia's mistakes. Like, did she ever have a "Oh, crap!" moment?
Bit more specific?

What we see here is a good example of why you don't just put "[ ] Write-in" at the end of updates if you want your voters/readers to actually do anything.

It was her first successful attempt, or at least she was looking it. Letting those poor young girls gain the power they deserved.
And so when she poked this one to see if she was alive she was pleasantly surprised to see that she hadn't melted.

Of course, when she opened her eyes and spoke she may or may not have changed her opinion.
"Mama?"

How about that demon what we killed?

Our interactions with DA LANDO from its perspective.

Oro already has an Omake.

DA LANDO... I'll try.

Human Magical Organisations
Best forest

Anyway, specifics

Really all I want right now is maybe what the major magical societies in the world are right now and a bit of what they do
The previous group in Europe was called the Mages Association, the current group, which was formed after the last one splintered during the two world wars, is called the Clocktower. Mostly because their leader has a strange love for clocktowers and their base was built beneath Big Ben.

There is no official group in Russia, just a scattered number here and there. A great deal of them died during WW2 when they were either conscripted or killed in the middle of the war.

There are very few magical beings in America and no official groups.

There is a small collection of different groups in the middle east who often band together to avoid being avoid being discovered by the more fanatical religious folk.

Africa has a number of tribal mages, though no organisation to speak of. There have been whispers of one of the countries there contracting a mage to discreetly help the war effort.

There are several small groups through Asia proper, there was a larger group named Central Lotus in China but they have either been scattered or killed with the sudden outbreak of the war.

Japan has a long standing community, though their numbers were ravaged by WW2, they have made a very fast recovery. Their previous name was Chrysanthemum, however after Japan lost WW2, they changed their name, then changed it again, and again. They still haven't decided on a name, so people just refer to them as the 'Japanese Mage Society', the name seems to have stuck.

In general the three (now two) societies that are actually relevant on the world stage generally throw their weight around to try and keep order. General rules were agreed upon.

1 - Keep the existence of magic secret for as long as reasonable.

2 - Suppress and manage magical beasts, plants and locations as best as possible.

3 - Try and prevent any large wars from breaking out.

4 - Eliminate any magic user who falls to the darkness immediately.

5 - DO NOT SUMMON ANYTHING!

6 - Comply with Gaia's wishes whenever or wherever she appears.

EMERGENCY UPDATE

7 - Maintain the Barrier of Light with utmost urgency!

The different societies send out scouts into the world, their job is to go everywhere and investigate anything that is suspicious in the slightest. They have access to a great deal of resources to achieve their goals and can commandeer almost any magical organisations lowers ranks if the situation is dire enough. They are the worlds first defence against necromancers, demon summoners, apocalypse cults, ancient dooms-day devices and the like.

They also have enforcers that enforce these rules wherever they are needed. Previously this role was filled by the Light, but now it has been left open the three remaining organisations have stepped in to fill the space, several of the smaller organisations send people who they think can help for training. These people slay monsters, are neutral arbiters during magical debates, destroy/contain dangerous magical artefacts or locations and are generally an organisations muscle.

We really need to do stuffs.

Such as, level things up and getting better with our sword.

You guys can decide the rest for now.

So question from a guy new to this thread: whats the long/medium term plan for our character? I mean. Short term is obviously survive, avoid conflict with military, and grind away at skills, but do we have any overarching goals?

Protect your sister.
Raise your sister well.

Just generally becoming awesome?

Also we've been getting plenty of hints. The light's involvement is definitely a thing to watch for, not to mention the fact that we now know the barrier may be breaking.

Slowly but surely, a broad scope is emerging.

Ok I am going to take a step into the ring on the affinities issue.

To begin with growth affinities are not something that humans normally have.

If you are human, you are not born with a growth affinity

A potential magical girl could never actually trigger and they would live and die without it ever becoming a thing.

And to present evidence of this from Crystalwatcher's quest

Anastasia Boheart had lived her entire life on Earth. Born sixteen years ago, on April 1st, the poor girl had a life of ups and downs. A father in the military, a stay at home mother, and an older sister that she was wholly dedicated to, she had few, if any, friends outside of that small family, and didn't stick out academic wise. Up until she awoke as a Magical Girl, her greatest goal in life had been to become a mechanical engineer. And when she had become a Magical Girl, as her sister had before her, Gaia lost the ability to read her as a fragment of Humanity.

Meaning: she had ceased being human.

This is because Anastasia gained | Divinity| at that point.

or in other words, she only attained the divinity growth characteristic once she transformed into a magical girl. If it was something normally inherent, then it wouldn't really matter if she became a magical girl, because she would have been born divine even if powerless to actually act on that. And Hence Gaia would never have been able to read her as a fragment of humanity.

Now, in a sense Anastasia was destined to be divine upon becoming a magical girl but that was because of [Peace] and lets not really get into that because that is an outside [concept] that I don't particularly want to go too deep into.

Furthermore we know affinities can be changed because Solar Radiance and Lunar Radiance had one affinity each changed. Presumably by some outside force but I don't believe the specifics were ever mentioned on what caused it, but I haven't actually read through the whole quest in a while and reading every one of the 636 pages for any words of Gods that might be hidden is not exactly in the cards atm.

Also we know that magical girls can gain affinities under sufficient trauma without losing any others.

To put it simply: While affinities are fundamental to the person they are not absolutes and with the proper conditions can be changed or added to.

Also it seems worth noting that it seems the only things with growth affinities other than magical girls are beings that are World or higher tier existences.

To put it simply there is something weird going on with magical girls anyway that they get growth affinities in the first place.

Right now, what a magical girl is is something that is called into question in this quest and it has been clearly signalled that it is the case, and the idea that how magical girls are viewed and how we present ourselves will have impact of what magical girls will be like in the future.

To put it one way, magical girls are in an extremely nebulous state right now.

When you keep in mind that the growth affinities of story maker all the way through epic seem to be unique to magical girls in general and the nebulousness of what it is to be a magical girl atm, the idea that magical girl specific affinties (the growth affinities) might see change as what it means to be a magical girl and how the world precieves us specifically as a magical girl, is not really SoD breaking to me.

Also while this runs under a similar system and is an AU of Crystalwatcher's quest, we have to keep in mind it is an AU. :V

Rukia doesn't have Crystal's notes, and their quest's themes and focuses are different, ignoring the fact that both main characters are magical girls. That the metaphysics diverge a bit is to be expected.

As for the updates, well I guess simple methods were best for crossing the border, a bit disappointed that Morgan didn't have a more simple method but "move away from the bulk of the forces and jump the fence when no one is looking" is pretty basic.

Also good to have confirmation that Morgan possesses magic for hiding, even if I had found that highly likely even without outright confirmation.

I am kind of tempted to agree with Veekie for now and not come up with any more complicated plans:

[X] Move further away from the border tonight then set up camp, town tomorrow

Cerys and Una have pushed themselves hard today, and are finally more safe from the US military for now. While we are not safe from The Light, the only thing we can really do about that is practice our ability to hide our magic and frankly I don't want Cerys to feel elation from finally escape the military's grasp only for the vote to remind her that she has to now focus on evading The Light. Let her enjoy this victory, rest the night, and worry about her other issues on the morrow.

I considered last vote setting the forest on fire when we are 700 metres into the Canadian border, using our thermal control's range of 800 metres to clearly set the fire on the US side so they can't blame Canada, but on the other hand that means leaving the forest right away (because we are not going to be staying around in it while a forest fire is going on)

I don't think that would stop the fire? It might...

Also, yeah no, I highly doubt that something like that has a chance of stopping a forest fire, of the size we'll make, so it isn't like the forest won't go on fire on America's side as well.

That said, there is always the possibility that they will blame Canada for the fire if we start it on Canada's side (either because of "incompetence" or the plan old fact that since the forest is so heavily on America's side more than Canada it seems like a thing that would harm America more and with the disappearances and a suspected terroist heading towards Canada, as well as the Canada/US bond not being as strong here due to Canada rejoining the Commonwealth… yeah)

I doubt that claiming that Canada purposely set the forest on fire is something the US populace would believe, especially since it is not like Canada wouldn't suffer at all from the forest fire even if it would suffer much less, but hey… American propaganda can be pretty impressive, and US Canada tensions are probably the highest they have been in a long time here.

still 100% planning on setting the forest on fire anyway :V

Especially since there is no guarantee things will go nearly as badly as I feel and when the Spirit of the Continent wants you to do something and you get a promise that it won't harm the humans, and it is a request that falls under the spirits purview (renewal of the land via forest fire is a natural thing), well…

(Also I would find it darkly hilarious if the continent springs into war because of the benevolent request of the spirit of the land for the sake of renewal. Truly Nature and Man have fallen out of sync :V)
