Magical Girl Quest - The Fire That Burns

Right then, at this point I strongly suspect that Karen something far too close to Magneto levels of crazy and we should get well the hell away from her. I also went back and looked at what we've seen from the CT's enforcers and the fight against the Demon of Due, and a few very surprised soldiers seemingly armed with nothing but pistols and perhaps a grenade did significantly better than I'd expect from all of the enforcers we have actually seen fighting put together.

Given what Karen has said to us about her magic supremacy plans I can't imagine them happening without a significant reduction of mundane military strength of some sort. Which will probably doom the world(and there for Una) when the Legions of Hell come calling in there billions.

It looks like a lot of us have different reasons, and different levels of "trust no one", but all agree we need to get out of the middle of this, at least for now

I think the whole point of the 'just as bad as each other' bit was to say you know... Everything we think makes the Counter Force Worse? The Clock Tower has done that too, we just didn't notice. Everything that makes the Clock Tower worse? The Counter Force has done that too, we just didn't notice.

So we can choose between what are -Word of QM Beta Reader- two equally amoral and reprehensible organizations.

Or we can try to figure out a third path that stops this madness.

[X] Accept her offer

Do keep in mind everyone that we actually have to get physically outside of the clock tower first so we can bring our friends along.

She smiles, taking one of your hands and running circles in your palm with a finger. Just be outside of that 'Clocktower' and I will take care of the rest.

So it's not like we're going to be immediately whisked away when we accept. At least... I assume not. can @Naron or @Rukia confirm?

We'll have time to explain, or at the very least leave a message behind. Possibly arrange for a way to maintain communications with either or both the Clock Tower and the Counter Force.

And just because we're leaving, so far as I know, doesn't mean we have to stay completely uninvolved. We can still intervene and interact, we just need to operate on our own intelligence and on our own dime, plus whatever Gaia can give us.

Sigh, I really, really hate this!
Sure Karen is not saint but her intentions with Una is in the right place but the one thing she's most truthful is Creys being too emotional or paranoia which is right!
"In that moment, you were more than willing to be completely irrational and throw everything away. I lied so that you could calm down and settle in. I would have told you about the vow later in more delicate terms, once you understand that I had no intentions of breaking it."

And Morgan just because she calls Karen Mother does not mean she's the enemy due to their relations, there's more to her than just being some sort evil manipulative agent which sounds like a dream up delusion reading her every words. She genuine with Creys and Una.
I really really hope we don't burn our ties with her.

It can't be mind control if Karen have confidence from many government, military to independent operators, you may think Karen and Clocktower is bad but there are a lot of good people inside, what about the enforcers, the military forces that aid us and the civilians?

Urgh what a bloody mess, I only hope Morgan and a big part of Clocktower come out of this conflict alive. We will see how both side do when the invasion hits.
At least Creys didn't blow.

Uhhh... Are we reading the same quest?

Because I'm pretty sure that's literally exactly what this ^ means.

They're just as bad as each other. Full stop, no argument. It's pretty much Word of God.
...no, that was a response to people claiming that the Counter Force had to be worse than the Clocktower. What that means is that they are, at worst, as bad as the Clocktower and could very possibly be better than them.

All it is is establishing a minimum level for the Counter Force. Choosing to follow that with assuming that of course they must be as bad as they could possibly be is...stretching things. And certainly biased.

I'm voting to ditch both sides and try to force reconciliation, so... Not so much bias as just me assuming that neither side is worth joining at this point. We either lose almost all access to magic, magical training, and magical education. Or we stay with a well-meaning (relatively) but highly manipulative chessmaster who we cannot guarantee will always keep our best interests at heart, even if she will very likely try due to our value as an asset.

Be that as it may, you were claiming something that was factually inaccurate and trying to pass it off as confirmed word of god. That is what I was calling you on, because it seriously misrepresents the actual situation, deliberately or not.

I misread the specifics of the wording, so it was accidental.

That said, I wholly expect this to turn into an 'all magicals versus all non-magicals' if we let the war go on too long. That is to say, there is a non-zero chance of a genocide being waged upon magic users with the survivors being rounded up and collared or forced into servitude in some capacity due to fear.

Joining the Counter Force isn't likely to let us stop that.

All for beating Karen and Annabelle's heads together until they stop being dumb say "aye"

Oh, also to address something from a while ago:

Morgan is an adorable nerd who sleeps in trees whenever she can get away with it

Also seemed legitimately confused and upset when Cerys was angry

What about *any* of that leads you to believe that she is a. A master manipulator acting on Karen's orders, or b. At all valuable as a source of intelligence?

The fact that she is Karen's daughter and has lied to Cerys on several occasions to conceal that fact, for one. The fact that she's one of Karen's go-to troubleshooters and people wranglers is another good reason.

Wasn't Morgan, like, adopted or something?

I'm pretty sure I remember her calling Karen "mother" being a thing we already knew about

Also Morgan is a scout. She spends the vast majority of her time out in the world looking for interesting things. She's not even an Enforcer, let alone one of Karen's top troubleshooter

She got attached to Cerys because Karen isn't dumb and realized we had a rapport going with her

Look, I get that you're angry and looking to hurt Karen, but this is dumb

If the Counter Force and Clocktower destroy each other, or even if one of them wins, we're in a whole lot of trouble when the Demons come.

My view on it is simple. Morgan may have been assigned to make Cerys want to stay in the organization, but she certainly seemed clueless about Karen lying to Cerys and when Karen send her away she hesitated a moment and looked to Cerys, probably because she valued her opinion. So she doesn't seem to be involved in everything and probably isn't aware of the shadiest stuff Karen has done.

Together with her PoV we got I think Morgan is actually a genuine friend of Cerys. How that will affect her now that the Clocktower and Cerys don't stand on the same side is unknown, but I think just thinking of her as another agent of Karen and nothing more is unfair to her.

While I'm totallyfor going with Gaia, just remember guys. She won't mind a blood bath. She won't allow us to be wiped out or to be swept aside when the barrier breaks but she's arguably just as dangerous as Karen.

I would not be shocked if she has this generation soaked in blood so she has a set of already bloodied Magical girl candidates on hand.

I swear, if Karen would bend the knee should probably could have had Gaia on her side, or been on hers.

Morgan's and Karen's relationship is… complicated.

Morgan sees her as a boss that is like a mother.

In tea time with the Queen you see the queen outright refer to Morgan as Karen's neice, as a sign that Karen has basically adopted her.

On her biological parents side…

Well lets collect what we know:
"I've been travelling all my life, my parents had me on the move and when I was old enough, I set out on my own. I've only been on my own for... three? Yeah, three years or so now. A little older than you when I started."

"Not really. Our family doesn't have a house or anything and I don't have any responsibilities.

we know that Morgan first set out on her own at 13 And that their family doesn't even have a house. The entire time we interacted with her, we have never seen a conversation with her biological parents, and know absolutely nothing about them.

When Alistair comes with the plane, he says:

Coming home so soon?" He chuckles warmly "Karen'll be delighted."

That the clocktower is home to her, and that Karen would be delighted.

No mention of her biological parents, who she had set off on her own from when she was 13.

It is a very probably case of "more my mother than my biological mother".

That said you are downplaying Morgan a bit.

There is a reason a 16 year old was sent to investigate a possible Demon incursion.
She is good at her job.

Saying she is a "scout not even an enforcer or one of Karen's top troubleshooter's" is false. She was sent to investigate a possible demon incursion, alone, at 16.

And that isn't even going into the fact that Morgan is actually not technically a scout.

If you were to look at the work roster of the Clocktower, you'd not find Morgan's name anywhere.

Maybe Canon In The Future Omake: A Most Benevolent Mother...?
Well... my own muse decided to speak up again. Here you go:

Omake: A Most Benevolent Mother...?

It is eons within but a single moment. You do not understand how it works, but Mother Gaia is capable of it. Naturally, she is kind of a big deal after all, right?

You lean back into her embrace for a moment longer; if no time will pass, you can indulge a little bit, right?

Huh... indulging... time... wait. What the fuck?

"...Mo-... Gaia?"
She does not react to the word that almost slipped out, only humming in response and gently treading through your hair. It is... relaxing. Just like last time. Which is exactly your problem. Last time. "If you can keep me here for just a moment... why was it six days the last time you brought me here?"

She hums again, but you can tell she heard you from how her hands slow down a little. A light giggle escapes her, ringing clear as a bell and sounding as friendly as a chirping bird. "So you are starting to think about things more thoroughly. Looks like everything goes according to plan."

A beat.

"...what?"

Did you just hear that right?

Before you can start wondering if she really has been playing you all along, another giggle catches your attention and you are pulled back against a -still- modest chest. "Let me tell you something, my dear. I won't lie and say I will always protect you; I don't know what the future holds, after all. I won't make a promise on something silly like that, either. But... I promise you this: unless my hand is forced, I will always look benevolently upon you and those by your side."

The fingers resume their work on your head and you relax back against her, feeling the gentle smile more than you can actually see it. Despite of this, however, you can tell that she is trying to distract you. As if picking up on your realisation -fucking mind-readers- she chuckles with the whisper of rolling waves... and gives you a light slap to the back of your head. "Language."

Then she chuckles again and continues her ministrations.... you could get used to this. "Yes, I was distracting you. How about we leave it at me having a great many plans in the making? Making Karen tip her hand a little bit ultimately made you more attentive to what is going on, did it not? Aside from that, it more or less directly led to us having this conversation."

"...So you're saying... that you planned all of this? The False Vow, Annabelle, all of it?"

A soft breeze plays with your hair, feeling oh so similar to the lithe fingers combing through them at the same time. "Maybe? Ehehe, did you think I would just tell you? Such a sweetheart..."

Sleepiness comes over you again, but this time you force it away to stay alert; whether this is a test or just Mother Gaia playing around, you should try your hardest to keep up. This thought earns you another gentle stroke and a kiss to the back of your head. "You are still young, my dear; you still have much growing left to do. But for now, I think this is a good start. Don't try to get in over your head."

The hands stop one last time and you are released from her grasp. "I have a great many plans, my dear child. Who knows, maybe even me telling this was part of a plan? Or maybe not? Either way, I can assure you that right now, everything goes. Just. As. Planned."

You turn as she speaks, taking in the words with mixed feelings... confusion, relief and a tinge of distrust. But... at least she did not lie? That has to count for something. And she promised she will try her best.

Some part of you insists she is lying, but... you refuse it. This once, you refuse. Not Mother.

Then you notice how expectant she is looking at you, as if she was waiting for something. Uhh...

In the same moment, Gaia's face falls and she sighs. "...we really need to play a few rounds of 40k once we have some time. I'm sure you will love it."

"What's that?"

"..."

Somehow, you feel both disappointed with yourself and really weirded out by Gaia right now.
