Magical Girl Quest - The Fire That Burns

So for camping equipment we currently have or about to get.
  • A compass
  • A knife
  • Tent with sleeping bags
  • Non-perishable food
  • Pots
  • Our powers will cover everything involving fire
Does it feel like we're missing anything? I mean I don't want to add too much because we can carry only so much and it seems like the basics are covered.
Level 100: Your skill surpasses the very aspects themselves, if you tried you could hide from [DEATH] herself with nothing but pure skill, no magic.
So it's herself is it? Hmm that's interesting to know.

Semi-Canon Omake: Aftermath
Omake: Aftermath

Major Murphy had prepared himself for a lot of things when he joined the military; having to kill another human being, being killed himself, and many of the other unpleasant things one commonly associates with being a soldier. One thing he hadn't prepared himself for however, was finding a hell beast. To be fair, it had been dead for awhile...but that didn't change the fact that it was still there. After some soldier traced the fire back to it's source, they found the creature at a recruitment center, and all the personal there were dead, burned alive by the looks of it. The Major had first seen the beast when it had been brought back to base. Before then, he had just thought that his men were exaggerating when they called it a monster. Now though, he could understand. The boys in the lab had just finished a basic autopsy of it, and Barney (the head of the lab. For some reason, everyone just called him Barney) was about the brief the Major and the rest of Fort Drake's command staff on their findings. "Alright Barney, what do you have for us"

Barney, a tall balding man with an impressive physique for someone who spent so much time cooped up in the lab, cleared his throat and began "to start with; I can now confirm that whatever this thing is, it's a species we've never seen before"

That wasn't a promising start. "You're sure about that?" Second Lieutenant Douglass asked

Barney narrowed his eyes "no, I'm just guessing-yes I'm fucking sure! I just spent three hours mucking around in that things guts, and I've never even seen most of the things I found in there. Sure, quite a few of it's internal organs resembled the ones I'm sure we're all familiar with, but they still looked radically different. And before anyone brings it up; no, it's not because its burned."

The Major decided to move things along before anyone else could stall "alright, so we're dealing with something completely new that can spit fire. What else can you tell us?"

"It can't breath fire"

Everyone but Barney froze "what?" Captain Hale was the first to speak

"Whatever that thing was, it couldn't breath fire. There wasn't any kind of sack inside it that was connected to it's mouth that could hold some kind of flammable liquid. In fact, we didn't find anything that even hinted at an ability to create fire."

"But I thought that one of our men got a lucky shot and punctured it's fire generating organ" First Lieutenant Adams spoke up

"That's the thing; this creature didn't burn from the inside out. The fire that killed it came from somewhere else."

"Are you saying that something else caused that fire and killed the soldiers stationed there?" Adams asked

"The does actually make sense" Hale began looking over some of his papers "none of the reports we got about it mentioned anything about fire"

"Also" Barney drew their attention back to him "we didn't get to look at all of the bodies; but the ones we did examine all clearly died before being set on fire."

"Fuck" Adams swore "does this mean we have another one of those monsters out there!?"

"Maybe" the Major said "but I'm not so sure"

Hale rose an eyebrow "Major?"

"Whoever or whatever did this, they started at the recruitment center, with that creature. The fire then spread from there, and we haven't seen any sign of it since. I might not be a detective, but that doesn't sound like the actions of someone hostile to us. For all we know, the fire spreading could have been an accident"

"You think they're friendly?" Hale asked

The Major nodded "I do. Although, it might just be wishful thinking on my part. If there's someone out there that can do that to a creature like that, then I'd rather have them on our side."

"Could it have been a different creature?" Douglass asked

"Possibly" Barney nodded.

"The question we need answered is; where did this thing come from" said Adams

"To be honest; I don't have a clue" Barney shrugged "this thing is just so...alien, that's I'm not sure it's even from Earth"

The other men froze at the lab tech's words "Barney" the major began "are you implying what I think you are?"

"That this thing came from space? Hell yeah I am. When I looked at some of it's flesh under a microscope, I...I wasn't even sure what I was looking at. So, I tried our high power electron microscope; it was like nothing I'd ever seen before. It's cells were just so different from anything on Earth. Hell, this thing doesn't even have any carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus or sulfur in it!"

"What does that mean?" Douglass asked

"They are the six essential elements found in every lifeforms on Earth. In fact, before today; I believed that life wasn't possible without all six of them. The only elements in it's body that I could identify were Francium, and Selenium. The rest was a bunch of stuff I'd never seen before. Hell; this thing probably has four or five undiscovered elements in it's body. The more I think about it, the more sure I am that this thing can't be from Earth. As crazy as that sounds."

"This can't be real..." Douglass let out a dry laugh "an honest to god alien invasion"

"Well whatever this is, we need to let Washington know" The Major got up. "Best case scenario; this was some kind of accident. An alien creature finds its way here and goes on a rampage before being burned alive. Worst case; it was just the beginning. If there are more of those things on the way, the higher ups need to know so that we can be prepared. I just hope we're not too late."

I wondered how the military would react to the dead demon, and this was the result.
I like this, though they are a little too informal to me.
Still, have a Semi-Canon. Since that's roughly how they will react, ish. I'll write a separate section of my own in a chapter or two detailing it. The rolls have already been made.

+ 10 XP

Since only Naron has made a plan, I'm going to wait a little bit longer to see if anyone else has one, otherwise I'll start the next chapter in four hours or so.

Please don't take that as a lack of, or dying interest.

In the first place people are less likely to make up their own vote in write-in's like this and are less likely to vote when the option is all write-ins as almost a universal rule in quests.

On top of that, when one vote a person would vote for is already greatly in the lead, they are less likely to redundantly vote for it. Especially when it is the only vote :V

The main reason I myself didn't make my own vote was that Naron was rather accommodating and added my additions that I thought of as more critical into his plans. If the main people who make votes during write ins are in alignment then the amount of unique votes also go down.

It's basically standard issue with write ins.

The more they cover the less unique votes will appear.
Once you exceed about 5-6 items people just tunnel vision and nitpick 1-2 items out of the whole lot if they go that far at all.

Mmm. More specific votes then?
I like leaving semi-open ended votes so people have more free will, but I'm fine with being a bit more directed if it helps people decide?

Well on quest I'm in, it sometimes has a few specific choices offered by the gm and a write in option below those so people can still be creative if they see a better option.

But just to repeat what Sinarblood said. Since Naron had made a vote that largely covered what I wanted, I was content to only try to ask them to modify theirs here or there a little bit rather then make a separate vote and argue why mine should win over theirs.

Uhh, the write ins are optional?
Oh, I appear to have not emphasised that.

You can write in a plan for doing something, but you could also just vote "[] Try and catch a train somewhere" without bothering with the write in and that would be fine...
The write in part is if you want to do something specific, such as training or something like that.

I do like people writing extensive plans though, it makes my life easier.

LOOTING INTERRUPTED
(Overnight Rolls
Sisters Hiding: 45 + 15 Cerys = 60
Military Searching: 23
Looters Searching: 91
Cerys Health: 52 + 15 = 67)

You awaken begrudgingly, the burning rays of the sun blinding you where they creep under the curtain and bounce off of a mirror that is placed just so. With a grunt you fling an arm over and clip the mirror, sending it falling to the floor and hiding the evil sunlight. With your peace returned you snuggle back into bed and try to fall asleep. Ten minutes later, despite your best efforts you lie awake. A quick glance over at the clock informs you it is entirely too early to be awake and with a huff you open your eyes fully.

Seeing as you probably aren't going to be getting back to sleep any time soon, you take a glance around the room, not seeing anything out of place other than your sister hanging half off of you and half off of the bed, as usual. I should probably take this time to heal a little. Seeing as it is currently five in the morning, you have plenty of time before you need to get up.

Relaxing back into the bed, you reach for your magic and run it through your body again with the goal of healing yourself. You can feel the magic get to work again, though this time it feels like it is working much better than it had yesterday.

(Cerys Health: 67 + 6 Regeneration = 73)

After the first hour, you're feeling much better and you can actually feel a lot of the little fragments of metal poking against your bare back now, having been pushed out of your body. Another glance at the clock and a sleeping Una tells you that you have plenty of time to go, so you decide to try and heal yourself again.

(Cerys Health: 73 + 6 Regeneration = 79)

When you come out of your trance this time, you feel even more little pieces of metal poking into your back, and your back itself feels so much better than it did before. Almost all of the constant aching burn has faded, leaving you in a much better mood than you were before. Another glance at the clock lets you know that it's currently seven in the morning, and you decide that since you're feeling so good that you should have a quick bath and check the house before you go back upstairs.

After carefully sliding out of Una's death grip and a much appreciated bath, you meander downstairs, glancing at the covered windows as you go. You've been in this house longer than you had initially intended to stay and the owners were surely on their way back soon. With that thought in mind, you decide that today is the day that you and Una will leave. You have a brief thought about your idea to take the train, but decide that with the military presence you saw yesterday, it would be much too risky. They would actually take the effort to check them and that was a risk you weren't willing to take.

When you reach the kitchen itself, a sudden noise catches your attention, making you duck back behind the living room wall. You hold perfectly still as your heartbeat jumps up to pounding loud enough that you were sure that it was actually audible. With sharp ears, you just about manage to make out what sounds like a man mumbling and jars shifting. The fridge?

You carefully look around until you spot a picture frame, with the light shining off of it, working as a crude mirror. After peering for a moment, you can somewhat make out what looks to be a short-ish man with ragged clothing, now that you are looking for it you can smell a disgusting mixture of sweat, vomit and smoke coming from him. Scrunching your nose up, you look over to the back door, seeing it handing open without a mark. Lockpicked, no damage. This guy knows what he's doing.

That thought in particular makes your heart beat even harder. If it had been a newbie who had jumped in because of the chaos, then you would have probably been able to scare him off, since they would have a lot to lose if they were discovered looting. But this guy was probably homeless, and had done this before. He would probably attack you if he saw you. You grimace slightly as you see him stuffing his face from the fridge, but you can see it as the advantage it is. Distracted, probably starving before this, might have a weapon. Doesn't matter.

(Cerys: Nat 100. Critical Success!)

With silent footsteps, you sneak closer to him, going completely unnoticed as he continues eating. Once you are within grasping distance you flush your energy though your entire body and throw an arm around his throat, grab your hand with your other and pull as hard as you can.

(Cerys: 10 Base Damage, +1 Reinforcement, +50 Complete Surprise = 61 Total Damage
Looter: 5 Base Resilience - 5 Unprotected Throat, -20 Ambush = 20 Additional Damage

Looter Health: 95 (-5 Malnourished) - 81 = 9)

In the middle of pulling, you feel the energy in your arms do something, and all of a sudden you are pulling just slightly harder than you were before. It's not much, but it's enough that with a sickening crunching noise, you feel something give way. Your arm pulls tight to his throat and pulls into it, crushing something with contemptuous ease, completely silencing his aborted shout of surprise. You don't even think about it as you keep pulling your arm back until it rests against something solid, pushing your knee into his back as he falls to his knees and squeezing as hard as you can.

You keep up your grip even as you feel something wet start to trickle down the side of your arm, and after a solid minute of grasping you let go of him, his body sliding out of your hands and falling to the floor. You are panting when you look at your arm, curious about the wet feeling, only to see it slicked with flecks of blood. Pale faced, you reach down to where the man had fallen and roll him onto his back, suddenly noticing the distinct lack of breathing coming from him.

The sight that greets you is one that makes you close your eyes and take a deep breath to try and calm your roiling stomach. The man's throat is completely crushed, your arm pulled back hard enough that the front of his airways collapsed, larynx squeezed between your arm and his spine. Predictably it promptly tore open against the hard bone, leaving a section of his neck where his spine pokes through the skin entirely, the only noise being near silent wheezes as an already brain-dead body tries to gasp in oxygen though airways that don't exist any more.

You take several deep breaths as you stare at the body before you remember your sister. A horrifying thought comes to mind as you sprint at full speed back up-stairs towards your sister. When you reach your room, you don't bother opening the door, instead ploughing straight through it with a flare of your magic. When the splinters fall out of your vision, you desperately look around for your sister, only to find her already standing and in the fighting stance your taught her.

With relived laughter bubbling in your throat, you move over to your sister and drag her into your arms, your entire body shaking with adrenaline. You stand there for several minutes, your sister making quiet fussing noises and trying to peek around you at the door, but you just grip her tighter while suppressing sobs. It takes you a while to calm down, but when you do you look around the room.

"Una, we are going to need to leave earlier than we planned for." A rushed heartbeat passes. "Someone tried to break into the house."

You feel her fussing movements halt entirely before she scans you up and down for injuries, seeing nothing before her eyes lock onto the slight flecks of blood that line your right arm. She doesn't say anything as she looks at you, but she quietly nods and starts gathering what little she doesn't already have packed.

You grab your hoodie, and fully clothed again you make your way downstairs, the body not having moved in the slightest. Peering out of the open door you don't see anything, so with a grunt of effort, you grab the body by the shoulders and drag it over into the corner, out of view from outside. Then you shuffle over to the door and push it closed. Resting your forehead against the door, you try to calm your rapidly beating heart, the slight shakes of a fading adrenaline rush making your body twitch.

When you hear your sister start moving around upstairs faster, you dash upstairs quickly and grab several towels from the bathroom, where your sister is brushing her teeth quickly. Moving back downstairs you lay out the body and throw them over it, hiding it from view. By the time you are done, you turn to see Una standing behind you with a serious look on her face, eyes trying to stay on your face but constantly straying behind you to the pile of towels.

There is a lump in your throat at your grab her into a hug, before moving over to the door and grabbing both your bag and passing Una hers. You both move outside before an idea hits you, making you run back inside. You open the cupboards and grab as many sweets and packets of things you can get your hands on, hastily stuffing them into your and Una's backpacks.

Now the both of you are standing in the garden, you turn back to look at the house. What are you going to do?

Where will you go...

Well... At least now we get our own strength so hopefully this shouldn't happen again...

You know, if you had been noticed before reaching him (Nat 100 WTF?), or if you had not bought the levels on reinforcement, he probably would have lived. It was the unexpected strength boost you gained from the reinforcement that turned this from 'brutal take down' to 'crushed a man's throat barehanded'. If he'd had 10 Health then he would have survived. The +2 (+10% base damage, rounded up) from reinforcement sealed the deal.
Dang. Having had this happen once, can we deliberately tone it down to non-lethal force in the future, or is this just how the system's going to work?

No reason anyone'd tie us to the burning building. At least, if anyone sees us leaving that's a problem even if we go straight to the forest.

And of course that guy had to roll this high. Well, he better had not; now he is dead.

Hm... I am thinking that setting anything on fire is a bad idea.
There is that Looter corpse lying in the house; so when the owner comes back, they will find themselves with a decaying body and no idea what happened. Maybe it was a group of several people who disagreed on something and fought for loot?

If we burn everything, then the fact that the camera recordings also burned will maybe lead to a connection between this incident and the large fire in the mall.

Soo...

Until you learn what your strength using reinforcement is, then yes, you will do everything with more force when using it.
If it hadn't been for the strength boost, you would have pulled him down to 10HP. Perfectly knocking him out for hours. You do know what you are doing.

If you use a power without knowing how it properly works, then common sense applies. Swing a sword at someone, cut someone really badly. Set someone on fire, they are on fire. Squeeze a man's throat with the force of an athletically muscled teenager with some magic thrown in, crush their throat.

You were being very gentle when you hugged your sister.

This could make for a nice cover...maybe.

[X] Set the house on fire
-[X] Put the body where the fire is starting and stage a scene of "dumb looter sets the house on fire". The kitchen could be good.
[X] Go shopping, then go to the forest
We don't know when we'll be able to stock up on supplies again.

They're very likely to spot the crushed throat if they bother with an autopsy. Which makes it look like a cover-up, which... fits I guess.

With how well known we are in the area... It's really up in the air on anyone linking the murder to us. We could probably claim self-defense fairly easily though.

I keep arguing myself back and forth on the matter if you can't tell.
