Magical Girl Escalation Taylor (Worm/Nanoha)

So I'll admit I'm not entirely up to date on this, but I have to ask, is there a reason we can't make Laura a Unison Device? Aren't those usually better than Intelligent Devices?

The next Triumvirate is going to be three sparkly magic girls and they also keep a nerd in a closet who hammers out Rings of Power when he's asked to.
Oh man, imagine how many kittens the PR team are currently having just with the whole Pentagram team alone. All that built up knowledge on image and advertising style and "Common sense" outfits. Gone, like tears in the rain.
OUT: Spandex and techy armor
IN: Big-ass battle dresses and fantasy outfits.

I admittedly don't know all the details, but there's a matter of time and ethics involved. Creating simple Storage Devices only takes up one of Tim's slots, while Intelligent, Boost, and Armed Devices take two slots. Unison Devices take up three slots, and Tim can't focus on anything else while he's making them. his familiars can work on their own projects though. In addition, the smarter Devices are still computers. Computers with a bit more personality and decision making initiative, but I don't think they're at the level where someone would call them a person. Unison Devices on the other hand are all full-fledged people in their own right, with all the decision making power and personality that entails. I for one am...leery of making an entirely new person just to serve as a magic wand when we can just make an upgraded wand to start with.

There are four types of casting Device: Intelligent, Armed, Storage, Boost. Unison Devices... are separate things. Think sapient boosters that you can connect to in order to gain specialised abilities and up your own powers. They're not basic casting implements. Even Hayate, who hand Reinforce Zwei as her Unison Device, had a Storage Device (a book) that was her main way of casting spells.

I mean, if you consider Hero before he got killed, the comparison is pretty damn scary. the real question though is, which one's which?

Fair enough. I just noticed nobody considering it and wondered why. With both ethical and technical reasons for it, I have to agree. Also, Intelligent device sounds best, since the similarities to Fate are pretty cool.

Hayate also has an armed device as well as her storage device book (plus Rein also has a device that she uses).

If Taylor is Nega-Fate, then Laura would be Nega-Nanoha: Mostly on-your-face fighting style with some ranged options.

I'd say give her a halberd. Halberds are cool.

Some of that story was Laura covering for Kayleigh's slip up. Jotunn never physically beat her down. Mentally...

Oh, and she wasn't making up the threats, either. That's exactly what Winter Hill has done to capes who lived on their turf in the past.
Well of course, that's what the other Winter Hill capes are for. Slap an inferiority complex into the poor girl so she never realizes she has a versatile enough talent that she probably could abandon Winter Hill and make it stick and keep her fearful and dependent on a parental figure that really doesn't seem to give that much of a shit.

...God, Laura really is the Fate to Taylor's Nanoha, isn't she?

I think you got the names reversed there. As I understand it, Taylor is Nega-Nanoha, being long range bombardment. Fate was the melee specialist IIRC, though admittedly I've never managed to actually watch the show, but something showing up in fanfiction enough generally means it's close to canon.

I have corrected this for you.

This Sounded funnier in my head

Not quite. Fate fights both short and long range, with a larger emphasis to close quarters while still having plenty of ranged attacks.

Meanwhile Nanoha has some short range options, but she barely ever uses them. And when she does get on melee range it's just to fire a Buster at point-blank.

Going with that comparison, Taylor is a bombardment specialist but she still fights at close quarters pretty often and effectively, as the Fallen could attest to.

So, Laura then would be a close-range fighter, maybe with two or the spells to throw at people from afar but still limited focused near entirely on short range.

@Silently Watches, here's a thought. What are the odds of Taylor and Laura's mana affinities complimenting each other? Other than thematically, of course.

"Oh good," Kayleigh says, "you're here. I, uh, invited you out for a couple of reasons, actually. Number one is to go shooting, obviously, but number two is so you and Laura can quit talking yourselves out of talking and just kiss and make up."

Anybody else reading that with Kayleigh putting just a little too much emphasis on the "kiss" part? :p

"You don't have to apologize. You were totally right. If it weren't for… you know who finding me and giving me a kick in the pants, I don't know if I works have gone out to help on my own."

So much for giving her a template. One would offer an only marginal boost to her end game effectiveness, and at the cost of unique possibilities.

Kayleigh smiles before sidling up to Laura and bumping her with her hip. "I'm sorry I said you were pretending to be an ice queen."

Let it go, Kayleigh.

I have done so much research into different guns the last few chapters, and I don't even own or want one!

My father, a preacher, taught me to use a gun. That's what happens when you're born in Texas. A shooting range isn't really my idea of a fun time, but there are definite merits to going to one.

[x] Make Lacey a regular mage

With the changed rules for regular Device mages, she'll get all the use she wants out of a plain boost

This would be hilarious for reasons you don't understand.

I was already thinking that Standstill hates being the support cape with the useless power enough that she would prefer EK. I don't know if it's confirmation bias making me read that as agreeing with that thought. Momberian Cat Sith can work great with either template, really.

Did you roll for it or was it preplanned?
The fact that a cape with Ice powers just happened to have Ice Rare Skill... o_O

She's also from a family with at least one more ice themed cape, so I wonder if Rare Skills are not exclusively matrilineal. Shards not interacting with magic well doesn't mean that the energy conversion genes in a Rare Skill can't influence the powers somebody gets.

"Linker Core detected. Estimated rank: AAA. Thermoelectric spectrum consistent with Ice Mana Conversion Affinity."
"True enough. Hey, are there any movies or TV shows that are close to right about magic?" she asks. "If we're going to be the witch squad, I want to make sure I'm acting the part."

"Compiling list," Perfect Storm says before you can even fully ask yourself what she wants. "Transmitting to Kayleigh's communication device."

By the Powers it really is Giftmas!! <3 <3 <3 😻

Do you want her to be the ice version of Nanoha, Fate, or Signum?

I'm with Lancer, in that Taylor does have shades of Fate with her reaper-scythe and high speed Blitz Action and even the shooter spam options (Fate was known for speed especially, but also Shift-type spells). And Laura will presumably have a more readily available Buster than we do.

I have the highest hopes for either Teana meeting the new and improved Laura (needs a cape name.... can we call her the Dark Evangel when she's in Unison at least? :V ) or Nanoha showing up personally to make sure Taylor leaves her backwater and joins up, now the ships are fixed and this freaky dimensional barrier needs study to avoid further travel incidents.

ReaperofInterest and Elwyn are both correct. And the part they didn't bring up: Laura can't learn new spells like a Device mage with just a Unison Device. She would be considered a non-Device parahuman mage, one with ice blasts and 6 spells (instead of 16 spells, one of which could easily be the same ice blast).

Oh don't worry. It gets better. :(

Fair enough. Still, a melee combatant with Ice Affinity is scary. It's like the perfect control element to slow down and hinder your enemies while not being excessively useful for ranged attacks unless you get extra creative.
