Magical Girl Escalation Taylor (Worm/Nanoha)

Coil is honestly pretty damn hard to deal with unless you're ware of both his timelines whenever it intersects with player activities. His mild paranoia doesn't help either(It's only mild because there's no way that a properly paranoid person with his power would ever risk themselves for something as stupid as the coin trick in the limo, to someone hat has the equivalent of a loaded gun on her.). Then there's the fact that some of us are simply lurkers. Others aren't goof a major planning stuff, so we leave that stuff to the people who are probably better at strategizing than us. Coil has a wide web of contact, moles, and soldiers. He has a power that makes it difficult to plan around him, or ambush him. He says holed up in his bunker at some unknown location most of the time when he suited up, otherwise he's just some unremarkable guy. I honestly have no idea how we'd go about dealing with him with our current powerset and allies. Not to say that there is no way, but rather that I have nothing constructive to contribute to the plans and am unable to tell which would work best, thus I stay out of it.

I never said it was a no-win scenario. I said it might be the best option we players can come up with for the situation we have made for ourselves.
I honestly have no idea how we'd go about dealing with him with our current powerset and allies.
And that's another good point: Silently Watches, we're not canon!Taylor when it comes to plans, not even remotely. We don't know everything that you know. When us players don't see an option/alternative, we're probably not going to suddenly realize what you had planned by waiting a few days because of our actual lives/other internet stuff. So, when people say that we have no clue how to beat Coil right now, and you say/imply that Taylor can, the issue isn't with us. You don't have to say what the plan needed is, but something, some hint/clarification, to jump-start the speculation and planning is something that you may want to think about for the future.

Oh, there isn't just one plan that would work. But very well.

Four more hints for the plan I came up with, though again, not the only one that will work.

1. I gave you the first piece of information you need early on in the arc.
2. People have already mentioned a very useful, though not strictly necessary step for pinpointing where Coil is.
3. You got absurdly lucky with your GB.
4. I made this vote a write-in because I wanted to see just how good you as a group are at coming up with plans that don't rely solely on the "Hit it till it's dead" strategy.

Are these hints vague? Yes, but I can't help but worry that if I'm any more direct, I'll essentially be telling you how to play. If I wanted to be in charge of every little detail, I would have made this a story instead of a quest.

And if you don't figure it out, it's not like it's the end of the world. It's just a game.

As a matter of interest is Coil a problem we have to deal with right now?
Could we just put him on the backburner for the time being and deal with some of the numerous other issues that require our attention?

Oh, there isn't just one plan that would work. But very well.
Thank you. I've been around enough Quests with QMs who essentially never interact with their player base outside of updates, if not outright blame them for not being psychic, that I'm very grateful whenever a QM really cooperates and communicates with their players. So thanks.

Well, you now know that we can do that, and some of us are even good at it, but situational understanding/analysis is the foundation of those plans.

A reasonable concern, something I think none of us players want either. I can't speak for anyone else, but two directions in which to look over past updates/discussions is very helpful.
And if you don't figure it out, it's not like it's the end of the quest.
If you and my fellow players'll forgive me for making an assumption, I think the above is more of what people are trying to avoid. A 'go back X updates/start of arc, then try again' checkpoint is better from a player-investment standpoint than you saying 'Game over, thanks for playing', or resetting the entire thing to the beginning.

By the canon timeline, we've got less than a month, give or take before Coil gets his hands on Noelle, thus possessing what boils down to world-ending deadman switch. Of course, canon can be butterflied away as the QM sees fit.

You don't have to worry about that.
3) Death is possible in this quest. It isn't permanent barring certain extreme circumstances, but it comes with consequences that you will not like. Try to avoid this, please.

*grabs corner of lips*
*Ziiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiip*

But seriously, I think I've established already that I won't talk about what is or isn't planned plot-wise. Maybe you can put him on the backburner without worrying about anything. Maybe you can't. Maybe if you fail, the planet cracks in half. Who knows?!

…I'm kidding on the last one, just to be clear.

Crossposting from SB for discussion.

I'm not 100% familiar with Nanoha, so I don't know if countering is possible. However, I'm going off the following paragraph, which suggests that shardnanigans are within the realm of magic, and so we hopefully can use magic against it.

"The term 'magic' refers to the storage, manipulation, and projection of mana," your Device retorts calmly. "Mana is an energy type that is fundamental to reality. It is stored in the Linker Core, an unusual structure of nerve tissue found in the spinal column of magic-capable creatures or sapients. Spells are programs that shape and project mana to produce specific results, including but not limited to flying, firing energy projectiles, or creating Guardian Beasts. It would not be inaccurate to compare magic to the computing devices present on this world, merely utilizing mana instead of electromagnetism."

"Mages have been observed for thirty years only on this planet."

If Perfect Storm can analyze parahuman abilities, would we be able to devise a no-sell? Or at least learn more IC to come up with a better plan/more convincing arguments for allies?

...When I think about it, I think the best thing to do in this situation is to set up another meeting with Coil. If it's a double then we track the comms signals back to where he's feeding the double information. If not, then we have PS/Sam track him after the meeting is done.

We just need to see if we can time the attack so it falls at a point where he's forced to keep the current timeline going. And even if he isn't, if we end up raiding his base and have PS gouge his systems for all of his info and then pass it to the PRT then maybe that will help in cornering him.

That does kinda tread close to the whole breaking the unwritten rules argument though...but besides that, instead of making an elaborate plan to work around him, we could just have either one of his men or the bastard himself come to us and then go from there.

Don't really see how we'd be expected to actually have a winnable plan with current IC knowledge anyway, barring the finest traditions of arriving at the GM chain of logic without GM-exclusive information. However, it's clear that we're supposed to have that knowledge.

Heck, people thought this was the "Investigate Coil to find out how to nail him" path.
I'll chalk this up to the ongoing communications issues.

[X] Coil has been able to hide from a great many people in the past but we have angles to pursue that others cannot reasonably follow due to a lack of computing power.
-[X] look for large scale money movement. A villain must have a money trail somewhere and Coil is known to employ mercenaries. As part of this look into particularly profitable companies that could be involved with money laundering.
-[X] try and find from where the mercenaries are being hired and track probable recruits (until they can be definitively removed as a candidate).
-[X] he is known to use tinkertech which would need continuous repairs. If his supplier could be found (through known seller websites) then supply shipments could be tracked.
-[X] look into records of known escape vehicles and where they vanish from the surveillance network. At the very least this should tell us where to start to look for his base.
-[X] track his calls when he talks to Danny. Encourage the work relationship. See if we can get enough voice recordings from these conversations to identify him by.

4. I made this vote a write-in because I wanted to see just how good you as a group are at coming up with plans that don't rely solely on the "Hit it till it's dead" strategy.

It would be so much easier if we were people who could accept hit it till it's dead anyways. As soon as we start a grid search for Coil and send Sam to kill him he probably wouldn't even realise what's happening before he got killed in one timeline, rinse and repeat with Coil trying his best to get better protections. As long as we attack in some strange hour and manage to get to him before he can get something that protects him from wide area search, Sam's Spatial Translocation combined with WAS and telepathy is a completely broken way to attack any cape without some really good combat abilities since they can be transferred anywhere you want as soon as the search bullet finds them. Hell she could even use this to teleport him smack into the middle of a PRT jail cell, and the more I think about it the more sense it makes.

Now we just need someone who can write IC reasoning for when we have no idea about his power
[]Do a grid search for Coil (might want to make contact with Coil to confirm whether he is the real Coil by monitoring communications I doubt he has Dragon level security.
-[]Have Sam teleport to him, by telling the coordinates as soon as you find him.
-[]Have Sam teleport him to a PRT Jail cell then call them, reveal this is Coil and ask them to start Master/Stranger protocols. As soon as Armsmaster can get to him he has no way of hiding his identity anyways

Or we could just continue information gathering but Silently watches is acting really coy about what might happen if we don't catch him ASAP.

In the SB thread, One.who.reads said:

[x] Get together with Danny and the other leaders to pass on what you've learned about Coil and decide what to do
- [x] Talk with new wave since the PRT is supposedly compromised
[x] image training with rust shooter. we need better anti-material spells

It's coming late to the party and probably has no chance, but I really like this plan, so I'm reposting it here (in a quote so it doesn't throw the vote off) to make sure everyone sees it. Why do I prefer this one?

1) It jeeps the team that we just formed aware of the new information gained from Tt. We do not have a CONFICT! ball installed in our brain, let's take advantage of the chance not to act like it.
2) It leverages the team that we just formed to brainstorm ways to confirm and use that info, rather than Taylor tyring to think of and do everything herself, even things she has no idea how to do beyond "ask Perfect Storm." Perfect Storm is a more or less ancient alien magitech computer-genie, if it's not on the internet he doesn't know shit about Earth.
3) It works on building more ties to the Hero community, to help keep Danny and to a lesser degree Taylor anchored on the right side of the line that separates them form the villains.
4) It gives direction for any training time she might sneak in, which is far more likely when using the manpower available from being on a team instead of flying solo.

... I forgot, did you guys notice the invisitext? Not really pivotal for the current plan, but it's basically reaffirmation of PS's loyalty to Taylor.
Do that, then. Focus only on messages that talk about Coil, mercenaries, or lasers, or on messages that look like they might be from his moles. There's no reason to read through all their mail.
"Plan is suboptimal. Infiltration will better achieve objectives."
"Probability of success is lower than for active infiltration."
"Verifying command authorization. Preparing to override."

You roll your eyes. I get that, but I really don't want you to risk it. Besides, they're our allies. Let's not make enemies out of them. While you're listening in, poke around the Net some more. See if you can find any new information on him or anything you missed the first time around.
"Mistress possesses sovereign-level authorization."
"Whatever Mistress desires."
"Orders from Mistress are absolute."

*shrug* Might as well.

EDIT: Personally, I'm not all that keen on voting or doing anything right now. Life's been a roller coaster recently and I couldn't slog through the votes. :(

"Of course," you continue, your enthusiasm ebbing away slightly as the immensity of the task reasserts itself in your mind, "those ideas won't do much unless we can actually get to him. From what the PRT knows – or what they're willing to release on PHO, to be more accurate – Coil is a small fry. He is involved in a number of crimes, but not to the extent of the Empire and the ABB. And yet, he can afford to hire mercenaries and Tinkertech? How big is his organization, really?"

"You think we need to move cautiously, then."

You turn to look at Samantha. "Don't you think we need to be careful?"

"Yes, but there is a time for caution and a time for action." The Guardian Beast frowns. "But, in the interest of fairness, combat is what my body and magic were quite literally designed for. I might be more biased towards physical confrontations than I realize." Shaking her head, she says, "I go where you lead. If you think we need to move slowly and carefully, that is what we shall do."

That display of complete trust is jarring, and it takes you a moment to regain your equilibrium. You have never had anyone who would follow you like this before, and now you have Samantha and Perfect Storm and even the Privateers. Once more, you decide that the day you found your Intelligent Device is without a doubt the happiest in your life. "Okay. Let's start with the mercenaries. They have to come from somewhere, and if we can find how he's recruiting them, it should give us a hint of where they're going and maybe how many of them there are. Storm, do you think you could figure any of that out?"

«There are numerous sites on the Internet that are not immediately available. Many of them are involved with the sale and purchase of illegal items or services. Discovery of which the target frequents will be time-consuming but not overly difficult.»

"Excellent. While you're at it, maybe look for large sums of money moving into Brockton Bay. He's paying them somehow, and I don't think his criminal enterprises would bring in enough to keep all of them employed. Not unless he's hitting some of the gangs like the Privateers are," you add almost to yourself. "I'm not giving you too much to do, am I?"

«A list is being prepared.»

"The Tinkertech." You glance at your animal partner. She furrows her eyebrows and slowly nods. "Coil said they don't need a whole lot of maintenance but that they do need power cells, which he has to buy from the same Tinker he got the guns from. Pyrotechnical, that's the name. Maybe he has a website you could break into and look for shipping manifests?"

"It would probably be less defended than the Protectorate was."

"That's almost a given."

"Since he is conducting crime, he or his men have to get there. Maybe you could look up any security videos they have saved to the web and see if you can find license plate numbers." An idea sparks, and your eyes widen. "Oh, and if you do, let me know. We might be able to follow them. They might not lead us directly to Coil's base, but it should give us a rough idea of where it is."

Samantha shakes her head. "Why go through all that trouble when we have his phone number? Or Danny does, at least. We can just ask him for it."

"That would mean telling him about Coil being a villain, though."

One grey eyebrow rises. "Weren't you going to do that anyway? If you're looking for allies, your own team sounds like the obvious place to start."

"I will, I will. Just… not yet." Her skeptical look remains, and after a moment you look away. "He seems happier, don't you think? The Privateers are cleaning up the Docks, the Merchants have lost a ton of money, none of the dockworkers have to worry about when the next payday is going to be, not when we're so flushed with cash…. If I tell him about Coil, that happiness is going to be over, and I know he'll blame himself for not realizing that we were being played. When we actually move against Coil, I'll tell him, promise. Just not right now."

"While I'm sure he'd appreciate your concern for his happiness, I think he'd like it even more if you treated him like a responsible adult."

That rebuke stings, which you suppose is the point. The front door opening prevents anyone from saying anything, and you walk out of the living room to greet your dad as he comes inside. "How'd things go today?"

"So so." He shucks off the heavy rain coat and hangs it up in the hallway to dry. "That depot I told you about? Mush was guarding it today. We settled in to watch for a little longer, and now it's pretty clear that it's a major distribution hub. We'll have to be clever about when we make a move, but if we can capture it, that should take out a huge chunk of their finances, and we'll be able to destroy what David expects is literally hundreds of pounds of drugs. The only downside is that it will piss the Merchants off something fierce."

"Do you think you'll need to use the laser?"

"…I hope not." You narrow your eyes at the hesitant tone of his voice, and he notices. "Carl trained some of the guys on how to use it, but the lower the setting, the more temperamental it is. For it to be dependable, the beam has to be set high enough to burn through somebody."

"A bullet can be just as lethal, can't it?"

"Yes, if it hits the right place. Shoot somebody in the leg, and they won't be able to walk, but unless they bleed out, they won't die from it. After he used it on a pig he bought, Carl said that a big area around the hole was burned, too. When the total area you damage is the size of a football rather than a little bullet hole, you have to be a lot more careful aiming. That takes time, and that time could be the difference between one Merchant getting hurt and one of us getting hurt and the rest of the thugs thinking they can pull the same trick."

"Can you call Coil? Maybe he has some advice on how to make it less lethal," you suggest in a forcefully neutral voice. You just had a wonderful idea. «Can you trace Dad's call? Maybe even record Coil's voice? If we can identify who he really is, that gives another way to capture him.»

«It will be done.»

«This is a bad idea.
» You look over to find Samantha shaking her head. «If you push him into greater contact with Coil, it's only going to make things worse when he finds out what you're planning.»

Your dad's unhappy groan interrupts your building argument. "I suppose you're right. I just don't like talking to him. I know he's a lot like us, but…. There's just something off-putting about him. I can't put my finger on it, but he gives me the creeps." He shakes his head and walks into the kitchen.

Well, now you feel even guiltier about encouraging his relationship with Coil. You especially don't need the 'I told you so' expression on Samantha's face. «How long do think it will take you to handle everything we talked about?»

Your Device buzzes quietly. «Time for completion unknown. Current estimate: seven to ten days minimum.»

"That's nothing we need to worry about right now, though," your dad calls back to you. "Calling him can wait till Monday. I thought we could make some burgers tonight, maybe rent a movie. Not how most teenagers want to spend a Friday night, I'm sure, and if you have other plans—"

"No, Dad. That… That sounds great."

...Yeah, pretty much how I expected that to go.

It helps that Taylor is actually pretty IC as far as the reluctance to trust her dad goes, but it makes her look like a hypocrite quite frankly.

...We're doing that to her a lot lately, aren't we?

Also, am I correct in assuming that the final part of the quest will be open next week?

Why do I get the image of Taylor and the Brockton Bay heroes storming Coil's base and taking down everyone inside, only to find that the men were the Privateers?

We're not exactly the most morally upstanding people.

I get the IC reasons for this, but since you've said she's focused on the ABB and won't be swayed from it, OOC there's no point in that being there since nobody wants to tangle with Lung, or worse Purity herself, without that anti-collateral damage spell.

Merchants are the only one I can think of to do this to. E88's too big, ABB is Lung, and Coil needs a week to scope out.
Actually, can we spend time making connections with New Wave, the Wards, and the Protectorate?

[X] Endangered Species – You asked for powers with which to eliminate the gangs. You even received the powers of someone who apparently had made it her life's work to do the same. It's long past time you got started on fulfilling that promise. Find a gang and wipe it off the map.
-[X] E88
--[X] Focus on Stormtiger first, you want to eliminate their fliers and Blasters before you work through the rest.

E88 is big, so best to start

Why do I get the image of Taylor and the Brockton Bay heroes storming Coil's base and taking down everyone inside, only to find that the men were the Privateers?
Something like that actually could have happened.
You're laying it on pretty thick, but point made, we should have told Danny. Can we do a write-in to bring him in on the Op ASAP?
Aww, and I was trying for subtlety. ;) You can do a write-in, but the conversation might not be pretty.
Actually, can we spend time making connections with New Wave, the Wards, and the Protectorate?
Hmm, I suppose you can, yes. It might fit best as a write-in addition to one of the other votes (I think it works especially well with Endangered Species, but that's just my personal opinion and I won't require you to do that) rather than a new vote all on its own.

[X] Light in the Darkness – Purity is one of the strongest Blasters in the country, and more than once you've heard her be referred to as "evil Legend". This is not someone you can afford to let go unchallenged, even if she hasn't been seen in Nazi company for a while.
