Magical Girl Escalation Taylor (Worm/Nanoha)

What's next, a Shirtless Bishonen bullet?
Maybe in the future. Anyone else want to take a crack at that one?
Kayleigh again for the XP?
Actually, kinda took a shot of inspiration and cranked out a different omake, and this one made me want to give Missy some love (and possibly her next summons), so give my current XP to Missy and if this one is good enough, give her another one.

Training: Puppies!

Missy yawned as she fixed herself a bowl of cereal. It was the day after she and the other girls had been given their new devices, and she had been too hyped up (and leery of running into Miss Miltia) to go home, so she had asked Dragon to stay overnight and test out her new abilities. Losing her space warping was…odd. She still caught herself going to twist space to make hallways shorter or listen in on what Tim, Nostromo, and Firefly were talking about, but it was like trying to use a limb that didn't exist. Weird. Anyway, Spells! Blitz Action and Flight made her appreciate all the little tricks that Velocity and Dauntless had mentioned when their powersets had come up. Her Barrier Jacket was super cool and she had been toying around with different designs late into the night. Her summons though. Sigh. While it was super-cool she had this magic skill that only she could perform, her current form of it was…less than she had pictured. Pets had never been a thing in her life, what with her Wards work and her unstable family situation, and that was exactly what her summons appeared to be to her. She was certain that any normal civilian girl would be thrilled beyond measure to summon a group of puppies, but all Missy could see was another stark reminder of why she had quit the Wards in the first place. Shaking her head, Missy continued her breakfast. She had summoned the puppies a few times last night, and then again this morning and was letting them run around while she prepared for the day.

"Good morning, Missy." Cassiel said as she floated through the door.

"Morning Cassiel. Can I get you something?" Missy replied.

"No thank you. I actually needed to talk with you about something." Cassiel spoke while also glancing over her shoulder nervously.

"Oh? What about?" Before Cassiel could respond, a high-pitched cry became more audible from the hallway, eventually revealing the pack of puppies running past with the two lead puppies holding two ends of a tiny woman in their mouths.

"CASSIEL! THEY'VE LEARNED TO CLIMB!" Dragon wailed as she was dragged out of site. A group of the puppies halted at the door and began running toward Cassiel.

"If you could work on training your summons and getting them under control, Dragon and I would really appreciate it." Her statement finished, Cassiel darted straight up in the air, narrowly dodging Missy's stumble as she tried to rise to her feet and was tripped by a horde of puppies plowing into her feet. Two more puppies climbed her chair onto the table and knocked her bowl of cereal onto the floor in their attempts to jump at Cassiel, splashing Missy and the rest of the pups.

"Okay." Missy said, the puppies on her chest and surrounding her head frantically licking her face clean while the other two continued bouncing on the table. "Training."

-Combat

"Alright then. Come at me like you mean to kill me." Missy slid into her favoured combat stance, prepared to deal with the savage onslaught she expected. Instead, she got multiple distracted opponents, several tilted heads, a few puppies licking each other, and one curling up for a nap on the floor. "Uhh." Missy groaned as she loosened up. "Maybe I should look up some things."

-Housetraining

"This is mostly useless." Missy complained as she scrolled through an article on her phone. "My summons don't eat or poop, and I can dismiss them if they're causing a fuss. Arrgh!" She glared at a sleepy-looking puppy lying on it's back. "Why don't you come over here!?" The puppy's eyes glowed red, it immediately rolled over and dashed over to rest it's paws on her leg, tail wagging behind it. Missy stared down at it, and then realized that the last part of her statement had felt like when she was talking to Calico Laughing. "Roll Over?" She tried again. The puppy began rolling around back and forth in front of her just like she had pictured. "Okay." Missy leaned down, stopping the puppy's roll with a belly rub, "I can work with this."

-Commands

"Three left, three right." Missy commanded, having gotten down silent mental commands quickly. The six puppies running split around the table as she had commanded, then regrouped on the other side. "Pyramid." She directed this thought at a group of five, who began organizing themselves into a doggie pyramid. "Backflip." Two more puppies began leaping and flipping in the air. As she idly scratched the ears of the final puppy that was dozing in her lap, she let out a cackle. Being a Master was fun!

-Combat (revisited)

As Missy took her stance, she looked over at her pack. Both Tim and Perfect Storm had cautioned her that summons of this level were not suitable for direct combat, but she was hoping she could figure out a workaround. Capes leveraged powers not suited for combat all the time, why couldn't she do it here? "Attack." She ordered, noting that with their eyes glowing red, they'd be quite intimidating in a dark place. The pack surged towards her, attempting to bowl her over like they had that morning, but since she could see it coming, it was easy to brace and reposition her legs so the puppies instead bounced off. The puppies then attempted to bite her, but their teeth weren't large or sharp, so they only formed grips on her pants that were fairly easy to dislodge. Her spirits sinking, she watched as some tried to climb up her pants only to tumble backwards when she moved and sprawl out on the floor. This didn't bode well.

-Scouting

Looking at the floating holographic screen before her, Missy felt a bit better. Yes, combat had been a wash, but this was what her summons were supposed to be used for. The screen was split between several viewpoints, all showing different parts of the factory. Missy had commanded the puppies to "find the fairies, try not to be seen," and set them off, and so far it was going well. They stuck to the walls, hid underneath and behind viable objects, detected Tim or his Beasts several times with their senses and avoided them, and generally doing a great job of reconnaissance. Spotting a white blur on one screen, she zoomed in on it to show Dragon and Cassiel floating over the fridge in the break room. Mentally making the puppy wave a paw at them, she ordered it to sit and wait and commanded the rest of the pack to join her in the break room. As she entered, her pack obediently following behind, Dragon and Cassiel floated over. "Well done Missy. You've done a great job getting a handle on your summons." Dragon said, pleased that there would likely be no more incidents with the puppies.

-Play

Fourteen sets of eyes moved in unison, tracking a round yellow object in the hands of their mistress. Missy laughed, waving the tennis ball before her slowly. "Do you guys want this?" she questioned, watching the puppies squirm and whine, some sinking down as if to pounce but none moving from their spots. "Well, go on. Fetch!" She shouted as she hurled the ball at the far wall. The puppies rushed after it; some tripping over their own paws with their enthusiasm, yipping with joy. Missy laughed as they wrestled and jostled and bounced the ball around the floor. Her laughter choked off when Tim, his eyes focused on a tablet, oblivious walked into the room as the ball rolled towards him. "Tim! Watch…" was all Missy got out before his foot landed atop the ball and transformed a simple step into a flailing fall. As Tim hit the ground and the ball shot out into the hallway, the puppies excitedly chased it, trampling over Tim's body in the process. Missy ran over and helped him to his feet. "Are you okay?"

"Mm' fine." He said, stumbling over to a chair. "Just stunned. Maybe you can go round up your summons?" Missy nodded and turned to leave when a thunderous crash sounded that shook the ground. A horrifying, primal screech sounded, and Missy froze in place. Her pack of puppies tore past the door, followed swiftly by a giant bipedal lizard whose head was scraping the ceiling and continuous screamed bloody murder as it chased after the summons.

Dragon floated into the room, her face locked in a strained smile. "I think it's time you went home Missy." She gritted out through the smile and crashes and screams continued through the building. "And please unsummon your creatures immediately." Missy gulped and did exactly that, the restrained calm in Dragon's voice more terrifying than any villain she had faced.

Kayleigh glance up at the two, and gave a smile. "Everything's fine, just made some new types of bullets last night and wanted to check with Dragon how useful they could be."

"Oh?" Taylor said, "Want to tell us about it?"

"Sure!" Kayleigh perked up, "Let's head to the range for a demo." As the three set off, she continued talking. "Unfortunately, Dragon said that the only villains who these bullets could really hurt are either unregistered, dead, or in the Birdcage. And any industrial usage could be done better and easier by other tools."

"I'm sorry they didn't work out for you." Taylor said.
==snip==
"Kayleigh. I love you. But did you seriously create a goddamn SUNTAN BULLET!!!"
Wrong genre or world, Kayleigh. If this was Buffy the Vampire Slayer or most other vampire settings they would be extremely useful, but no vampires in Worm. Nor anything else weak to sunlight.

True, but I suspect she has a massive business opportunity here. Think how much people would pay to get a good tan in seconds, without burning or spending time in a tanning bed, or even to wait for their bodies to produce the needed melanin. Of course, that is assuming that it is safe, and doesn't, say, give you cancer after three or four treatments.

Enough UV to get a noticeable tan in one burst is probably not the safest thing. I'm not sure if skin can even react that fast?

That their skin reacted that fast suggests that the magical signature of the effect alters how the energy released interacts with humans. This would need extensive testing before it went anywhere, but if she could refine the spell and copyright it, and prove that it is safe, she'll have a steady income stream for life.

Why are we discussing the theoretical underpinnings of an omake? We're bored, whereas SW is a doctor,is likely working longer than normal hours and not having as much time to write. I figured I should bring that up so people would be more likely to cut them some slack.

Hello, I have been following this thread for a while, but this is my first post. This omake is only for my amusement, although I wouldn't mind it becoming canon.
Also, more omakes on the way, and they will be glorious!

MYRDDIN JOINS ARCANA

Myrddin pointed an accusing finger at Legend. "How long have you know?"

"Uh... a few months?" Legend replied.

"And why didn't you tell me?!"

"It was sensitive and there were many factors.."

"Screw this!" Myrddin cried. He spun to Calamity Witch. "If I join your team, will you teach me magic?"

"Uh, yeah?" Calamity floundered.

"Alright, I'm leaving the Protectorate."

Legend and Calamity Witch sputtered.

"Just one question Calamity Witch." Myrddin said.

"What?"

"Will I have to wear a skirt?"

Considering we did briefly meet Myrrdin while hunting Coil.... I wonder what he does think of Calamity Witch. Besides that obviously we woulda played on that more if we picked Chicago over Philadelphia a ways back.

We might have an opportunity coming up depending on votes. When we were meeting with Legend to get info on the Fallen, he mentioned how he originally wanted Standstill to be moved to Chicago to assist with training the next branch of PRT mages. Since currently Perfect Storm is the only Device capable of scanning for Linker Cores, it's likely Taylor will be sent along as well. (plus we do have his phone number)

What if Shipwright and Dragon tried to destroy the Machine Army, and the Army absorbed/incorporated the magictech? Assuming the MA exists with the AU.

I didn't consider this. Good point. My omake was a one-shot, so I don't really care if Myrddin learns magic.

I also want to know what Myrddin thinks of us. And yes we would have played up the mystical aspects of our powers.

Also, apologies for the triple post, I am still figurng out the SV system.

We'd definitely need more information before making any calls about that. Does Myrddin even have a core and how strong is it? How would the Protectorate respond if Arcana poached a fully-fledged hero (and leader) compared to a ward? Is he even willing to give up his powers which he has spent years developing and refining into the formidable powerset he currently has? We won't know until it happens in-story.
Also, congrats on your first post for this quest! And an omake no less, well done. I look forward to seeing what else you post in the future.
Incidentally, are you planning to join in the vote for Kayleigh's weekly bullet loadout?

I'll be honest, I kind of forgot this vote was still open until just now.

I guess I need to think of a different way to deal with Kayleigh's bullets since this way didn't work out great. Oh well. There's plenty of time.

I don't really care about the bullet loadout. I figure other people will vote, or SW will decide, given the above post.

Also, SW, when is the next chapter? I am working on an omake where Taylor learns Vampiric Ray. The idea is to use it against potential Fallen mages. The omake should be finished tonight. If you approve the spell, it could become part of the strategy.

Won't be possible. Taylor gets points to learn new spells or upgrade when she is involved in a fight. Since the next chapter will be the actual fight with the Simurgh Fallen, she couldn't learn that spell until it was completed. Also, the strategy vote has already happened and only could use the spells she currently has.

I know it makes things easier on us, but I'd suggest just vacuously letting her have X bullets of type "whatever" so we can just use what we need to when we need to without us or you having to handle the mess that is trying to decide between the types.

As an offset, though, we can only use bullets from the approved list, so no making new ones up to use in the middle of the same fight.

Seems the most similar to how cartridges are being handled now that Taylor has "sufficiently many", just skip the early buildup phase because its painful.

Maybe for future Kayleigh votes, we offer you bullet "Plans" for the discussion and then when the actual vote opens you pick three or four of the plans as you like and we vote for those. I can see that the vote tally this time had Plans Flexibility, Versatility, and Mayhem.

I would not be at all surprised to learn that the ammo votes weren't intended to go on beyond the end of the Fallen. It's only at the beginning, when she hasn't had much time to make bullets, that exactly how many and, possibly more importantly, which kinds of bullets she has made matters.

Idea for the Awkward Arsenal Omakes: stink bomb bullets. Sound effect bullets(fart noises combined with the stink bombs for best effect :p)

@Silently Watches It was asked earlier whether we could use Divide Energy to give Kayleigh the mana to make more bullets. That extra complexity to the situation might be too much for you to tolerate, or it could be an in character excuse for simplifying the process.

I must have missed that question. Yes, that could be done, but that would need to have some set up before it happens. Taylor is the only one with that spell, and she's never used it.

"Oh, there's a novelty sunglass shack at the mall." Kayleigh replied, running a quick inspection on her weapon. Once completed, she indicated for Taylor and Laura to stand just behind her shoulders. Her arms came up; she sighted down the barrel, and fired. The bullet detonated about a meter down the range, releasing a quick yellow burst and quickly fading. Making her weapon dematerialize back into her Device, Kayleigh whipped off her sunglasses and said, "What do you think?"

Taking off their own glasses, both Taylor and Laura stared. Kayleigh's face had darkened considerably in color except in the area covered by the glasses, giving her similar markings to an inverted starry-eyed raccoon. "Wait." Laura choked out, raising her arms. There was now a clear disparity between the color on her outer arm compared to the inner. "Kayleigh. I love you. But did you seriously create a goddamn SUNTAN BULLET!!!"

"Technically, it's an ultraviolet bullet, but I like that name, so let's go with that." Kayleigh replied cheerily. "Aw, Taylor, it didn't work as well on you."
Did this just become a Boktai crossover?

Another omake! I said I would post a Training Scenario a few days afo, but editing it is harder than I thought and I have other things to do
Here is Myrddin Part 2. If you aren't confused, then I messed up.
😄

Myrddin Joins Arcana P2

"Okay, is that all I need to know about magic?"

Yes" Calamity Witch replied. "Now I just need to scan your linker core."

Beams of light spread out about Myrddin blah blah blah, you know the drill.

Scan complete PS intoned. You have an SSSS rank linker core and Rare Skill: Chaos

"Uuhhhhhg... Whaa does that mean?"

Your linker core outputs an extremely variable amount of mana, and your magic will be wildly inconsistent.

"Also, here's ur device" Calamity said

She handed him a bracelet with a green jewel in in.

"Imma name it Nevermore." Myrddin said. "I have a raven called Joey jones, so I think it funny"

Nevermore abrupty grew black wings amd fluttered away.

"Dammit GET BACK HERE."
