Magical Girl Escalation Taylor (Worm/Nanoha)

I AM NOT CLOSING THE VOTE YET. All votes cast so far are still valid and are still being counted. This post is just to summarize the discussion we've had for anybody who hasn't been following (or anyone who made their vote and then went on their way, so it needs to be long enough to trigger the OP post notification), so everyone can make an informed choice.

[ ] Keep the khopesh metal, and Missy has to be REALLY careful
Pros:
+ Missy can learn a weapon-enhancement spell to make it guaranteed nonlethal
+ Doesn't need a build slot from Tim
Cons:
- Missy can't learn such a spell until next week at the earliest, so right now she's swinging around a real sword
- The Fallen ARE NOT the only people she'll be fighting before she can possibly learn an enhancement spell
- The XP and spell slot spent on the enhancement spell can't be used for a more powerful spell

[ ] Make the khopesh hardlight, and Tim only has five build slots for this week
Pros:
+ Can switch between nonlethal and lethal right from the start
+ Doesn't cost Missy anything
+ Cool factor. It's a khopesh lightsaber.
Cons:
- Hardlight weapons can't be enhanced by spells
- When it's blunt, it's blunt. When it's sharp, it will cut whatever it hits
- Uses up one of Tim's build slots

Continue on with the vote.

As much as the shape of the Hardlight hurts my sensibilities... Yeah, I'd rather save the spell slot on the balance of things.

So short version is:
-Metal Sword - Missy is mainly melee, with the ability to add spells to really play up the pseudo-knight qualities, but the drawback is more or less having to spend spell slots on being better at swording rather than summoning. And keep in mind always that she's NOT anywhere as durable as a real knight, evasion is a risky substitute for armor(and a real knight would have both).

-Hardlight Sword - Missy is mainly a summoner, with the sword and her high speed giving her a pretty good nonlethal option against street to city level parahuman opponents off the bat, but for serious high level fights she'd be playing keep away and supporting her Breaker summons.

And a Lightsaber won't be stolen? I would think sneaking of with a little tube of metal is easier than with a big blade.
More like it have a lot less chance of the light saber being stolen due to it being more compact and if she's holding it you'll need to slice off her arms first before the light saber can be stolen since if a brute just grabbed the blade she can just turn it off then on. As for the metal one a strong enough brute can just yank it by the blade and throw it. also I was thinking if the lightsaber can be hidden inside her bionic arm.

Given the pros and cons... would rather have the effective but not super effective weapon right off given there will be fights/practice right off the bat. Plus no spell slots used for weapon buff spells, means more fun spells to choose from.

I'm sticking with the metal khopesh because Missy really wanted a knight template, but her having the summoner rare skill we compromised with her getting Summons and the ninja speed so she'll also be capable of going Naruto style melee.

being better at swording rather than summoning
I think it's better to say 'support' instead of 'summoning'. Missy has 15 spell slots and there is only 4 summoning spells, so I'm sure both version of Missy will have all of them. The difference is whether we use the remaining slots for combat spells or for support spells.

The way I see it:

Metal Sword Missy is Summoner/Rogue, she sends her summons in the fight and perform sneak attacks while the enemy is distracted.

Hardlight Sword Missy is Summoner/Priest, she sends her summons in the fight and supports them with buffs and debuffs, while still perfectly capable to defend herself.

But if people want Missy to fight like this, why they voted to go Full Naruto instead of Summoner?

Full Naruto is hybrid like Fate is, rely on speed to get hits in efficiently against lesser opponents, against faster targets, but switch to bombardment(or in Missy's case, Summons) against anything hard.

See, I don't agree with this, I still think that Missy can go summoner/rogue with the Hardlight Khopesh, and it'll be easier of anything because she doesn't have to worry about spending a spell slot to make her weapon less effective, and then she can use bombardment spells as the ranged option to gain her sneak attack damage.

She'll be able to store the weapon in her Device, meaning neither weapon can be stolen when not in use without also separating Missy from Calico Laughing. While her arm has some storage pockets built in, they were designed with her space manipulating powers in mind, so I'm not sure what she could put in there other than a pack of gum.

Of course, putting gum in there could lead to some fun lines about kicking ass and chewing gum, maybe something like , "I need asses to kick and gum to chew *pops out a pack of gum* and look, all I need now is to introduce my foot to your ass."

I am quite aware that I suck when it comes to dialogue, or technically monologue in this case.

spending a spell slot to make her weapon less effective
Less effective? o_O
May I ask you to elaborate?

Because IMO this spell makes her weapon more effective, at non-lethal take downs especially.

Hardlight weapon has a non-lethal mode, but it just turns a blade into a baton. A baton. Any enemy who happens to have a Brute rating or decent armor (like Theo or Jotunn for example) will laugh at you if you try to attack them with baton. And if you want to take them alive, you can't really use a lethal mode without risking to inflict dangerous wounds.

Meanwhile the spell's non-lethal mode retain all the cutting power of lethal mode, but make it so it doesn't inflict any wounds. You can easily cut your enemies apart and they'll just pass out.

Which can be bad once she gets knocked out since all the space returns back to normal which would mean an exploding arm.

Also if she can still just resummon it I'll still go for hard light since it still weights nothing.

Completely irrelevant, since she no longer has space warping powers. That's how she could have made the spaces large enough to hold appreciable amounts of stuff, but now that she has a Device, she doesn't need those pockets at all. There are limits to how much stuff her Device can hold, though those limits are not clearly defined. Since the only thing likely to make SW define exact capacity is us trying to abuse it, I don't want that particular bit of ignorance to go away. What her Device stores takes no effort from Missy to maintain, any more than the actual size of the deployed, active form, requires effort to keep in standby mode.

Here's a thought. Would a weapon-enhancing spell work on Missy's robot arm? Something to either give her punches more oomph or to add an extra kick to her particle cannon (and at the same time make them safer to hit people with)?

Ah if that's the case then none of this matters since I got confused by this line:
While her arm has some storage pockets built in, they were designed with her space manipulating powers in mind, so I'm not sure what she could put in there other than a pack of gum.
And made me think that she still have her parahuman powers. Since she didn't have those powers anymore then this conversation doesn't matter.

I'll still go with light saber though as metal still breaks easily in worm.

IIRC the spells are limited to "Melee" or "Ranged" so the same spell that affects a blade should affect her punches, but not her particle cannon. (Additionally I think the Ranged boost can only be applied to other people, it can't be used as a self buff)
