Loyalty is its own Reward (A Traitor Legion Chapter Master Quest)

So, is this limited to singular planets? Or would star systems, and potentially even small subsectors, be possible to write up?

(also, where can I find a chart for what the different tithe names mean?)

At the moment planets, star systems and sector oddities like nebulas and asteroid fields have been made the Aetelian sector only has 4 subsectors, for the tithe grades search up Warhammer administratum tithe grades and it should pull up the list

"What do you think about my presents, my dear?" ~ Nurgle, to "You know who"

P.S. There is certain irony in auto correct attempting to change "dear" to "fear"

The Contemplative Brother
The Contemplative Brother

Say what you will about his second deployment, but it certainly wasn't boring.

Though in Amery's eyes, it had started out that way, the world he had landed on was interesting true but he thought that it would be similar to his last deployment. Perhaps even moreso since Milae lacked the comparative grandeur of the great hives of Lezo. It was interesting, a cold and mountainous civilised world which gave unto the Imperium an immeasurable amount of material each year to fuel its hunger, which automatically made it more interesting than Braicam. But it was no hive city, no home to hundreds of billions of souls, and no throne world of a whole sector.

The deployment initially seemed to be quite the challenge, the xenos which had infested this world had been pushed underground into a dense network of tunnels by the local pdf, no way in and no way out. It would have been a truly daunting task, to storm into the beasts maw and slay the cretins in their holes, fortunately that is not what their commanders had decided upon.

They were not going to storm the enemy, no, they were going to force them into the open to be butchered. How might you ask? Easy, they were going to flood their tunnels by detonating an explosive close to a nearby aquifer, when their tunnels walls were breached the xenos vermin would come scurrying out and would meet the fate which the Emperor had decreed for their wretched kind.

The plan had worked flawlessly, he and his fellows had been ordered to hold attack positions near the tunnels entryway, then the Captain bellowed for us to be ready and we all prepared to do our duty. Then the Earth shook as the explosives were detonated and soon his ears were met with the pleasant sound of rushing water and screaming vermin growing closer and closer. Then they started pouring out of the tunnels and the first of them to great the sun were evaporated into a red mist by sustained bolter fire.

It was nothing short of a massacre, the animals were simply butchered, any feeble attempts at resistance to retaliation were almost negligeable. Simply bouncing off their armour or missing entirely. Even the elites of their enemies, their little witch and their champion, were struck down with almost contemptuous ease befitting of xenos. For a moment Amery thought that this deployment would be near as dull as the last.

Then the leader of the cult arose from the deep and he wished it was.

It was a monstrous creature, towering over any and all of his brothers, a xenos abomination surrounded on all sides by robed and misborn attendants. Our fire immediately turned towards the creature, but the creatures guards gave their lives to shield it from our fire. Then it reached our battle lines and we began to die.

Before he had joined the Mist Shrikes he had never imagine that something could slay an angel of the Emperor. It just wasn't something he could imagine, something so powerful, crafted by the very hands of the Emperor and descended from his own blood. It was almost inconceivable to his young mind.

Now he knew better, there were all too many things which could lay one of his kind low.

The creature was a hurricane of claws, stabbing tails and rage. He and his brothers were unable to stand before it, it slew not just his fellow nowaljiki but also full blooded marines as well, simply shrugging off their bolter shots and attempts to resist in melee. It was only when the dreadnought took the field that the battle began to turn. What a battle it was, this ancient of the Chapter and the one who trained him engaged this monstrosity themselves. Their combat lasting until finally the sustained fire of all his fellows and the injuries the two elders inflicted saw the monster slain.

Once the battle was over, he and a few of his fellows were ordered to scour the tunnels of any vermin left behind. It was pointless busy work in hindsight, there were none left alive at least where he searched, but it did give him time to dwell on his thoughts.

He had never seen one of his brothers die before.

He knew it was to happen intellectually of course, all died and to be an astartes was to accept death in service to the Emperor, but it was different seeing it. It caused a strange feeling to dwell within him, one he couldn't quite name.

It was fate, he supposed, the destiny the Emperor had written for his fallen brothers. They were fated to die here just as these wretches were fated to die at their hands, just as this world was fated to suffer their presence and the Emperors own sons were fated to rise against their father. There was nothing which he, or anyone else could do, this was his galaxy and all from the lowest or highest were a slave to his will. One could find contentment in this fact or not, it made no difference.

It was fate, it was destiny, it was as that which the Emperor had ordained.

He could only accept this fact and move on.

Strangely, despite his reasoning, the strange feeling didn't leave his mind.

Wrote up a story about Amery fighting the Genestealers on Milae and seeing the first battle where his fellow marines died. Also, merry Christmas and a happy new years!

Rather ironic line of thought, considering the Primarch that Mist Shrikes descend from.

Well, looks like we have a nice present for the thread! It is nice to see Amery confront the mortality of his position, and the recurring mentions of fate in all the Chapter really make a more obsessive part of his personality shine. Canonized, and you receive 100XP for the stat of your choice from one of the company captains.

Happy Sanuinala everyone
Wishing you a heretic free holidays(I have alerted the inquisition for disturbing levels of slaaneshiness in this thread)

Thanks I'm glad you enjoyed it, I think I'll go with Captain Gallienus's ballistic stat. Also, merry Christmas!

Criton

Classification: Feral World/Death World

Administratum Tithe: Solutio Prima

Population: 16 Million (estimate).

Capital: Cy-Bee

Day Cicle Duration (In terran standard): 31 Hours

"How do people survive here? Well, life uh, finds a way." A native Critonian upon being asked how they survive the conditions of their planet.

"Seriously why do people keep taking creatures off that Emperor forsaken green-hell, they're going to escape, they obviously will escape!" a Decadosian Cossack upon being ordered to cull a feral Veraptor population which had escaped into the Decadosian jungles (he and his squad were never seen again).

The Feral World of Criton was brought into the Imperial fold in millennia 33 following its discovery by a House of Rogue Traders. What was discovered was a world of vast jungles and forests, inhabited by monstrous wildlife resembling the legends of primordial Terra's prehistoric life, where the planets human population exist only in small tribes or settlements. Constantly besieged by the worlds hostile fauna amidst the ancient ruins of their prior civilisation.

Despite the worlds current condition it is theorised that the world was once a paradise world. A world where the elites of the ancient human empire of the Dark Age of Technology would come to indulge in one of many delights. The world exhibits signs of extensive terraforming in order to craft its current climate, there are ruins scattered all across the planet of luxurious hotels and extensive containment areas theorised to have contained the dangerous wildlife now prolific across the planet, the local tribes and settlements have legends of how they travelled from other worlds to this planet and how the "Saurus" were once contained by their ancestors for their amusement but were let loose during the Long Night as punishment for their foolish pride.

The reptilian beasts of the planet all bear the signs of being the product of genetic tampering and modification. They uniformly have a strong resistance to diseases, viruses, and poisons. Are noted for recovering from injuries extremely quickly, and most prominently are noted for the almost unnatural speed in which they can adapt to their surroundings and evolve. There have been cases of the various fauna of the planet being removed from their planet and placed into radically different environments, from toxic urban worlds to tundra's and deserts, and have been noted to almost within a human life time naturally evolve to meet this new environment.

The planet itself is mostly disconnected from the greater imperium barring certain settlements. Most of the planets human population are divided into numerous petty tribes, semi-nomads who travel from region to region while trying to avoid becoming food to the many terrible predators which stalk the sweltering jungles and ruins of the planet. Those few settlements which do exist are typically formed by those tribes which have taken up permanent residence in some fortified area, typically an older ruin, and strengthen themselves by contacting the greater imperium. Trading various exotic goods for weapons, supplies and other necessities.

Trivia:

-Numerous species of the planet have been taken off world for one reason or another, many nobles wished for exotic pets, creatures to hunt, or interesting beasts to see fight in gladiatorial games, unfortunately the creatures of Criton have an unusual knack for escaping confinement and have thus established stable populations across various planets. Examples of such creatures which have established permanent presences on other worlds include the cunning Veraptors and the mighty Tirex.

-Goods often traded to off worlders include the hallucinogenic venom of the nocturnal Deloph, exotic hunting trophies and body parts, ancient scavenged technology, and the eggs or living specimens of various creatures from the planet.

-Rumours of ancient genetic technology caused both Forge Worlds of Milan and Smilnay to dispatch expeditions to the planet, naturally when the two came into contact fighting broke out, before the local wildlife ended their conflict by devouring both expeditions. None have been sent since.

-Prior to the introduction of the Imperial Cult, the people of Criton often revered several of the larger creatures of the planet as Gods, such as the horrific Tirex, the semi-aquatic Spinos, and the long necked colossal Brachaurus known locally as "Earth Shakers" such is their size.

Okay I had a rush of inspiration reading the Jurassic Park novel. What if Jurassic Park, but in 40k, and its an entire planet. Like, some uber rich eccentric during the DAOT decided to terraform an entire planet to make it match up with the Jurassic period and created a planet wide Jurassic Park where tourists from off planet can come and gawk at the various creatures, with the planet itself being run by a small native population, naturally when the Age of Strife hit the planet broke down and all the creatures escaped their containment. Now its a death world covered in genetically modified Dinosaurs.

So everyone while we are waiting for the next post I wanted to ask what do you all think would be the best way to go about dealing with the siege of Vraks. Participating in the night raids on the orbital defense guns? An assassination of cardinal Xaphan and deacon Mamon. Having Catilina have a chat with Xaphan and broadcast his chat to the planet
