Yeah, the Gnarled Rod doesn't apply to national-level spirits. Land spirits mostly means stuff like "the spirit of the river here" or "the spirit of this copse of trees", not, like, "the entire spirit of the nation".

Actually, I am wrong about your Intrigue action. Tools of the Trade mean it is in the clear to the pass. I still disagree about taking an action with 61% success chance when it comes to the Learning action, something I personally find to be too risky.
I didn't even catch that, thanks for pointing it out. I still think it is worth the risk mainly because it is free and the price of failure is just not getting a spiritual map of the land yet, a setback yes, but more in the sense of lost opportunities than damage to the investigation.

I see, I guess the Gnarled Rod was more to help Cormag rather than the entire spirit of Justice then. (Or it was just a good thing to hold onto. :p)

While your here @huhYeahGoodPoint , what bonus do we get for assigning a minor boon to an action?

We came back with more than that after our last mission. Did I misunderstand that we don't get to keep extra budget? Or did something happen behind the scenes to loose us that money?

At an end of a case, we hand in our unused budget back to our bosses and then when we have a new case, we get assigned an new budget for that new case. We don't keep budget between cases.

Something(s) happened behind the scenes, yeah. Normally you turn in your spare cash and get a discretionary budget next time, so, uh, yeah, this is a thing that keeps happening.

Okay that's good to know.

We're probably gonna want to focus on "The ministry finds itself" but that might backfire and let them cut our budget further.

But I guess if they do that we should get an option to go a bit rouge and get that groundwork for the revolution going. Our MC could probably figure out how to nicely edit the documents so that we can hid a lot of our extra budget too while we get the revolution set up.

Maybe if the crusade goes bad enough we can finally get to poking at the calamity frame. Just gonna need a pilot (hopefully an isekai gets nicely dropped into our laps to pilot our Mecha)

Did someone 'lose' coin molds and now an entire province is forging currency?
Seems unlikely. The finance ministry we work for has been testing the coins, and they still have the same precious metal content. I suspect what actually happened is that someone set up a new gold mine - and a large one at that - but kept it off the books to avoid paying taxes on it. So it floods the local market with currency, causing inflation, while still being regular old coins. There's just more of them than usual.

If we are going to speculate then I have my own hypothesis:

People in this province have been wealthier before and are now getting desperate for money. There might be some a increase in taxes also has the potential to rise prices.
An alternative version to this theory are incompetent lenders who had a large scale loaning operation going on, which needs to be payed back now.

I admit to a certain degree of wishful thinking. If my hypothesis is correct, then we are not being badly disrespected by the government we have served extremely well. More importantly, it means that our budget will likely go way up after this case, and isn't the new norm.
Bear in mind that defunding the agency responsible for bringing in revenue is hardly unique to Oskaria. It's unfortunately far too easy to demonize the guys who collect money from everyone, and rather bad politics to publicly defend such an agency. Just look at America, where the IRS has been being slowly defunded for a while now.

This kind of thing is practically guaranteed in a place like Oskaria, where there is both unchecked corruption and lots of powerful nobles who want to keep their ill-gotten gains safe from pesky government spiders.

Edit:

Get in the robot, Shinji.

[X] Plan Getting the Lay of the Land

Both insider trading and getting the lay of the land seem like pretty good bets tbh, but I'm happy to go with this one first. Lower DCs and, more importantly, lots of information gathering for our very first session.

On that note, how long do we have on this case if we're to make it back in twelve months and how long is the travel time between here and the central ministry?

I know Swift Justice isn't as useful anymore, but our country is still in Crisis and while shinies are worth it more, it still doesn't hurt to resolve problems as soon as possible. It may seem like fixing them just causes more to pop up in their place, but those problems would be arising regardless of how quickly we move.

Eleven months. Travel time to and from the capital is two weeks each direction.
