Green Flame Rising (Exalted vs Dresden Files)

Not a great look from the outside.

Or the side side.

Or even a great look from the inside, if your someone like Harry.

And yet on the other hand look at someone like Morgan in Turn Coat, he was introduced as gleefully enforcing the laws in the first books when it turns out he is so burned out he might as well be made of compressed ash and he absolutely hates both his job and himself. The problem is the Council does not see an alternative.

Large parts of the white council have serious issues with enforcing the laws.

Law MAKERS is also an interesting title. If they think its applied literally and assume the white council is a regulatory body that came up with those laws. A-LA a wizard government.

Not knowing about the warlock corruption.

Just on a general note here; having a point and being an asshole aren't mutually exclusive.

The FBI isn't wrong about the many issues related to the way the supernatural in general operates, and the white council in particular. As a component of a governing body acting to change the situation is a reasonable desire and worthwhile program.

The thing that poisons the well for me is that they're abusing the masquerade themselves to violate critical norms related to their roles. This isn't a paperwork error, it's a key aspect of how the maintain the trust necessary to hold the authority they do. Even when nobody knows, perhaps especially then, because if and when it comes out you knock over the whole house of cards.

Being a criminal doesn't mean it's acceptable to do whatever you want however you want to someone.

Law enforcement cannot knowingly prosecute fake crimes and remain law enforcement.

If they built a case demonstrating that the wardens are an organization that kills US citizens, then brought Dresden in to question him based on evidence that he was a member I wouldn't doubt their intentions or character nearly as much. I'd even consider campaigning to actively support them past the cliff notes on how things work, as a much needed voice for mortal justice.

They broke faith though; so to me they've lost the benefit of the doubt, and any trust they haven't earned back by proving they've changed.

This is a lesson the FBI in particular has learned the hard way many times, so they can't claim ignorance in any respect.

I wonder what their reaction would be to realizing the Laws aren't merely a set of rules imposed by a governing body. At first glance, the Laws are generally quite sensible, the basic sort of rules one might imagine are necessary for a hidden society of magic users to function. The idea that the 'Lawmakers' have seen fit to regulate the community might even be somewhat comforting.

Learning that the Laws are actually necessary to maintain practitioner sanity and the continued integrity of reality, well, that might be more than a little disturbing. Maybe even the kind of disturbing that gets people to stop planning to exploit a new resource and to instead plan to eradicate it.

Sounds like something the Technocracy would do :V

[X] Go back to Harry's place, make sure Mouse is well and that no one tried to break in.
-[X] Call home and let Charity know you're watching Harry's apartment for the night since he was kidnapped by the FBI. If she argues, let her hear the recording Clippy made. Ask Michael if he knows any of Harry's friends who might be available to house sit for Harry longer term (such as Thomas, though Molly doesn't know that, IIRC).
--[X] Take a bleach bath to rapidly recover Essence. While you soak, have Clippy go over our route from GPS and public data, and make a list of potential sources of the footage we need organized by probability of having what we need and location. Have everything ready to go when we start looking for that alibi.
---[X] Early the next morning, after securing Harry's apartment as best we can in his absence, we'll head back to Menominee to start looking for that alibi.

Ok, looks like we are swinging by Harry's first

I want to get there and be gone before the killer or his friends think to look.....yes I'll call once Im in the town. Can you ask Dad if there's anyone who can swing by Dresden's apartment and look in on his animals?....Yes I will be careful.... Love you too." Arc 2 Post 17: Familiar Trouble
Familiar Trouble

21st of July 2006 A.D.

"Mom... listen I am saying at Harry's tonight because he's been kidnapped by sketchy FBI agents," you get the words out in a rush because you know just the first part on its own is likely to provoke a rather strong reaction.

Lost 1 Essence

"What do you mean kidnapped? He was arrested," she snaps, but you cut her off "He's been arrested before you know and that does not require you or anyone else guarding his apartment. Did he ask you do?"

"No, but listen mom this is probably a plot to get him out from under his wards which means either and attack on him or an attempt to steal something from his home."

"Are Dresden's... what do you call them? His wards still intact." You do not like the way her voice is working its way slowly up the octave.

"I mean yeah no one broken them but but static defenses can't..."

"His dog, the one that's some kind of guardian spirit, he's fine and still there and Dresden has every expectation that he will guard the place?"

"Mouse is all alone in there any any well-planned assault will have planed for him."

"Molly," she snaps in a tone that would make a drill sergeant proud. "Has it occurred to you that the man does not want you wandering around his apartment."

The way she emphasized man makes you want to squirm and yell at her at the same time. "Mom this could be an attempt on Harry's life precipitated by something I asked him to do, including asking him not to get help so that he would not reveal my weird powers and make me a target. If he is going to be upset at me for sleeping on the couch to make sure Nazi magicians to not break into his appartment that is something I am willing to bear."

"Well I am not willing to bear you sleeping in a strange man's house in what you called danger in order to protect Dresden's prized collection of magical crap. Remember what we agreed to two years ago about staying overnight in unsafe places? This is one of them. Come home, now."

The call goes dead and you have to spend three seconds with your eyes closed just to calm your racing heart. It is particularly hard to recall that she means well when your mother goes like this. This is a far cry from your agreeing not to stay overnight with people you do not know after parties and she knows it.

You could either do what she told you, ordered you do do... or you could ignore her and damn the consequences. It's not like she could get past Harry's wards without Mouse letting her in and he would have no reason to.

What do you do?

[] Continue with the plan, this is more important than your mother throwing a hissy fit

[] Go home, between you and dad you'll be able to wear her down in the morning (Requires a DC 7 Willpower roll, if failed will default to ignoring her)

[] Write in

OOC: The tradition of rolling terribly in contested rolls against Charity's willpower continues. Alas she also failed her roll against Molly's willpower, leaving her furious, which is why it will take a willpopwer roll to actually do what she wants even if you guys vote for it

I'm not surprised by Charity's reaction, but it is frustrating.

We could use hollow mind on a few of his items. Just to be sure that nothing goes wrong and we get warned if something bad happens.

Charity has to get over it at some point. Molly's almost 18 and then it'll be no business of hers whatsoever where Molly decides to spend the night.

Ohh wait. I have a better idea.

[X] Mab. Mab. Mab.

Let's ask Mab to watch Harry's pad for us. Maybe she'll feed Mister too!

Dresden's wards don't have a function for automatically turning on and off. If I remember it correctly he gave Molly a physical key enchanted in a way that let the holder past his wards after she became his apprentice to use until she was good enough at controlling magic to turn them on and off herself.

We never got a key and are incapable of manipulating magic well enough to toggle them even if he had added us to the approved users list.

We'd have to tear his wards down ourselves to get in.

Mouse is a guardian spirit-kin, he can let you through the wards safely, the reason Harry did not do that in canon is that he did not discover once and for all how smart Mouse is until Changes, the same book when the apartment is destroyed

Oh no, if we leave now we have literally wasted a night.

We should be racing to get the evidence, but if we decided to guard Harry's home instead, we will at least do that properly.
