Green Flame Rising (Exalted vs Dresden Files)

Anyway, more detailed commentary:
1) Lydia is really bringing her A game, and I like how she's doing a lot of stuff in the background. I do have to wonder how she's keeping zombies charged. We could probably help her with exotic, possibly synthetic plant life. Also stuff like hydraulics and such. Still, great to see her rocking that exaltation. It really shows that she's not our sidekick, but also has stuff of her own going on. Maybe buy some more craft or technology for her? Definitely going to find a dog for her.

Also, Lydia might get attention of Mother Winter here.
2) Molly feeling familiar about the stuff around her is... I don't know. This is probably exalted related, but I'm not sure what it is. Can't be ruins of Yu Shan, Molly shouldn't remember those. Can't be ruins of Malfeas either. Maybe something from that flashback to Dragon Kings?

3) Seriously, I want to know who that faerie is. Low-level entities don't disparage linear time. This is probably some elder goddess or something. If she's not an avatar of the Mothers, basically.

Ok, I am terribly curious who the girl fey is. Because she can't be someone low level as an attendant to Mother Summer.

Midnight from 23rd to 24th of December, 2006.
I wonder how much we should read into that name. Butcher placed significant emphasis on Europe for their design even though they're supposed to be everywhere to at least some extent. If we assume that theme holds whatever the reason behind it was then we might be able to localize her a bit.

Maybe she just likes the royal symbolism, but until the 19th century the only source of Opals was in Slovakia (cite). A name like last bright opal tempts me to think she's got history in the area.

There's also this, from the same source:

In the Middle Ages, opal was considered a stone that could provide great luck because it was believed to possess all the virtues of each gemstone whose color was represented in the color spectrum of the opal.[63] It was also said to grant invisibility if wrapped in a fresh bay leaf and held in the hand.[63][64] As a result, the opal was seen as the patron gemstone for thieves during the medieval period.[65] Following the publication of Sir Walter Scott's Anne of Geierstein in 1829, opal acquired a less auspicious reputation. In Scott's novel, the Baroness of Arnheim wears an opal talismanwith supernatural powers. When a drop of holy water falls on the talisman, the opal turns into a colorless stone and the Baroness dies soon thereafter. Due to the popularity of Scott's novel, people began to associate opals with bad luck and death.[63] Within a year of the publishing of Scott's novel in April 1829, the sale of opals in Europe dropped by 50%, and remained low for the next 20 years or so.[66]

If we assume for a moment she does have a connection to Central Europe I'd be tempted to think that the book which ruined the Opal's reputation was another one like Stoker's vamp book for the purposes of the quest. That is, a fictionalized account of some actual fey drama and that she's either one of the two women who were involved in the supernatural from Anne of Geierstein who were actually changlings or of the same lineage as them.

So my crack pot conspiracy theory is that there's some sort of powerful fey breed that has a totemic gimmick going with opals like redcaps have with their hats, and that they were born in and got up to nonsense ranging across Central Europe until someone learned how to screw up their focus.

Hence "Last Bright Opal" and why she's a big enough deal to be a personal servant to Mother Summer. They went downhill, but whatever their thing is makes them like Blamps and Loup Garou where you either have their special bane or they're probably going to kick your ass up and down the street.

@DragonParadox does LBO have any jewelry on her, maybe something made to look like cheap plastic or easy to overlook like stud earrings?

At least part of this is probably wrong, since I'm about 2-3 steps too far into speculative territory, but I think the data points are relevant to whatever her deal is.

Lydia is really flexing in this chapter. How effective are her puppets in combat?

We should help her upgrade them when we have time. The torso of each of them could probably hold a pretty beefy electronics/ weapon package. Everything from bombs to recording equipment, jamming tech, flamethrowers, etc. could be added.

No, it's the Wyld that's being referenced here. Long story short, the Wyld is the NeverNever of the First Creation but way, way, way worse.
Oh, and it's also where the Primordials originated from.
And possibly where the Outsiders come from because it's located outside existence.

Unless she has her own dragon nest we should probably offer her space in Last Station. That way she can keep them around indefinitely without active effort to charge them.

Or if she wants her own place help her take one for her own. There's got to be someone around Chicago we wouldn't mind surprise evicting.

I was thinking the deep marches. Seems like an environment that would stick around in an exaltation's memory.

I was looking around more, and that same wiki page makes an interesting connection that's a lot more direct:

The word 'opal' is adapted from the Latinterm opalus. The origin of this word in turn is a matter of debate, but most modern references suggest it is adapted from the Sanskrit word úpala meaning 'precious stone'.[62]

References to the gem are made by Pliny the Elder. It is suggested to have been adapted from Ops, the wife of Saturn, and goddess of fertility. The portion of Saturnalia devoted to Ops was "Opalia", similar to opalus.

Another common claim that the term is adapted from the Ancient Greek word, opallios. This word has two meanings, one is related to "seeing" and forms the basis of the English words like "opaque"; the other is "other" as in "alias" and "alter". It is claimed that opalus combined these uses, meaning "to see a change in color". However, historians have noted the first appearances of opallios do not occur until after the Romans had taken over the Greek states in 180 BC and they had previously used the term paederos.[62]

However, the argument for the Sanskrit origin is strong. The term first appears in Roman references around 250 BC, at a time when the opal was valued above all other gems. The opals were supplied by traders from the Bosporus, who claimed the gems were being supplied from India. Before this, the stone was referred to by a variety of names, but these fell from use after 250 BC.
Assume that the Opis connection is at least partially correct for a moment, and consider how many entities were left in a lurch by the white God's last patch to reality.

There's a glimmer of a possibility that the munchkin is (or was I guess) actually a goddamn titan. Specifically either Mother Earth of the thing that made her.

This would be a downgrade for a being like that, but the closer you are to reality the more power that sort of entity has to give up. This might be the most powerful position she's allowed to have without going full Odin.

Edit:

Which would make her comments on time but different, given her relationship with Saturn/Cronus.

Didn't Molly get some deep lore from Mab that heavily implied fae are all Rakshas who were willing to alter to fit reality? This would fit.

Hrrrmm, the thing is this girl very obviously is appearing as a child. A specifically maternal diety reverting back to childhood is kidnapped weird? Then again maybe Mother Summer subsumed that aspect and then we get time dislinearity stuff

Depends on the mask she's using. It's somewhat traditional for gods to take on the appearances of their priests or worshippers and her cult apparently had a strong relationship with the vestals as an institution. As I understand it they basically got picked as children for a 30 year stint as a priestess, after which they retired on a state pension and were free to marry and otherwise act as normal citizens.

We're way out on a limb here, but if we're on the right track it'd make a certain amount of sense if she'd made some deal like that on deific time scales. She looks like a kid because she's still in the earlier portion of her 30 century deal for a new mantle.

I'm leaning towards my opal fey theory more though, since you're right about this being a reach. I was mostly pointing out the connection since it seems reasonable that if she's any kind of ancient goddess it's the one allegedly associated with the cornerstone of her name.

Relatively weak I guess.
The Charm is based on the Abyssal Zombie-Charm, so this is the baseline:

The zombies created by various Abyssal Charms have Strength 3, Dexterity 2, Stamina 4, Intelligence 1, Brawl 2, and always act last in a turn. They have Willpower 10 for the purpose of resisting effects, but cannot spend any of it. Zombies have 10 health levels, and cannot suffer wound penalties. They halve any bashing damage they suffer after soak (round down), and suffer aggravated damage from fire. They can soak lethal damage, but cannot soak aggravated damage. They also cannot ever heal damage. Zombies have no minds to speak of, and so are immune to any mind-controlling effect not specifically designed to command the walking dead.
Her puppets are likely tougher, maybe even stronger, but you can't change the fact that they have little skill.

The way she is keeping her zombies charged is called 'being an Exalt'. Once she raises it with the charm it stays up. This isn't maintenance-heavy mortal magic.

Probably doesnt matter.
That said, its polite to ask, and we have Calibration Gate to return to that area in the future should we so choose.

Original character. So there's nothing in the books to say.
In canon, the Mothers live together and alone in a cottage, and on neither of Dresden's meetings with them has he ever encountered anyone there.

Command The Dead costs 1m per zombie/undead golem, and the golem will stay reanimated for a lunar month.
So you can afford to make the body, spend 1m of Essence before bedtime to charge it, and go to bed; by the time you wake up, your Essence is back to full.

If she has 24 of them, that just translates to 8 days when she charged 3x golems before bedtime.
Just go out and order a bunch of them from a mundane wood crafter, using high-quality wood.

Zombie stats with armor.
Average Dex, average Brawl, above average Strength, high Stamina, low Intelligence. Plus heavy armor.
Probably organized as a small unit/couple of small units for effectiveness.

We should help her upgrade them when we have time. The torso of each of them could probably hold a pretty beefy electronics/ weapon package. Everything from bombs to recording equipment, jamming tech, flamethrowers, etc. could be added.
The point is that they are cheap and disposable; she can literally order them in bulk for home defense from mundane wood crafters and keep spares at home that havent been empowered.
And they are inconspicuous in a home setting where you can keep wooden statues around as decorative ornaments

Mother Earth is unlikely, because Gaia is a goddamn Primordial (and at some point that would need to be resolved too). But a major goddess... Yeah, that seems to fit.

Upgrades we provide don't necessarily need to be particularly expensive. It's not like we would need to go for top of the line stuff here.

A bomb in the torso would be cheap, as would a camera with a Cyber-Devil living in it. I don't know the details of it, but a short-range jammer that effects wi-fi and cell phone signals can't be that difficult to manage, either, since I've seen many stories over the years of retail stores, theaters, schools, etc., installing them in their locations for various purposes.

Hell, just making them some of them into giant Pez dispensers that spit out grenades would be trivial.

There are all sorts of cheap options that could be used.
